Review from Janelle W.
All tofus are not created equal.
There are few shops in North America where one loses one's sense of place and feels transported to the heart of Vietnam. Thanh Son Tofu is one such shop.
On a busy Sunday afternoon, Thanh Son is clamoring with little Vietnamese ladies. Like pitbulls in Jack Russel bodies, they all scramble for prime positions in line, shoulder through the crowd to view the day's specials, and shout out their orders in the abrupt diphthongs of their native language.
These aren't the sort of ladies to get as aggressive as a constipated rhinoceros over nothing. In fact, they're pushing and shoving for the most phenomenal tofu in the GTA.
This fresh, housemade silken tofu ($2.50 for 16 oz.) is as smooth as custard. It quivers like a spring bride's fleshy, ivory bosom. And its delicate flavor soothes one's palate with pure, earthy, slightly sour, soy. The soft tofu--like Chinese doufu or Korean soondubu--is ladled out of warm vessels with the beautiful dexterity of a well-choreographed dance.
One mustn't cook with tofu this fresh and tasty. Dare you fry it into a dehydrated sinew... well, that would annoy me more than hearing Jay-Z on your myspace page. Thanh Son's tofu is so sublime that the only way to enjoy it is to slurp it up using a shallow spoon, with just a light drizzle of soy sauce or the accompanying fish sauce.
Other hot sellers at Thanh Son:
+ fresh housemade soy milk
+ fried seasoned tofu blocks (e.g. pandan-banana, mushroom-green onion)
+ a dozen fresh made-in-house sweets (e.g. bean custards, sweet sticky rices)
And as if the fresh tofu isn't enough to make one forget they're in flat Mississauga, Thanh Son will whisk you away with their avocado boba smoothie. This rich, creamy cloud of finely-ground ice and buttery fruit is gently sweet, and absolutely, tear-jerkingly divine.
Is this Vietnam, or Heaven? All I know is that when one steps in to Thanh Son, one isn't in Mississauga any more.
