One of my latest addictions has been vietnamese food. No matter what part of the city I'm in - it seems to be easy to find, light and delicious. Luckily, I live downtown, and Thahn Son is one of my most favorite places to go.

The restaurant itself is a dive - old furniture, sparsely decorated with a few dying plants and some faded wallpaper. It's run by a family and I love them - the husband is always smiling and always working and the wife is one of the nicest most hospitable women I've ever met. Definitely don't come for the atmosphere - much like many other restaurants in Edmonton, this place is a hidden gem. No flash, but great food.

I love all the vermicelli bowls and their 5-color vermicelli is my favorite - lots of great meat and an amazing price. My boyfriend always goes for the Pho and it never disappoints. The spicy beef soup is the perfect blend of spices and comfort, and it's cheap at $6 a bowl. I also love the spring rolls and the salad rolls, all hand made and very fresh.

The service is consistently good and the food has been great every time I've been in - even at 9PM at night. Don't let the location and appearance of the restaurant fool you - if you like great vietnamese food, you'll like Thahn Son.

I used to live near here, which was just great because this place has some of the best bún in town. For the uninitiated, "bún" (pronounced similarly to BOON), is a rice noodle bowl topped with a variety of grilled meats (pork, beef, chicken), prawns, and spring rolls, then topped with chopped peanuts. There's usually some lettuce, cucumber, and carrot sliced at the bottom of the rice noodles, and you pour "nuoc mam" (flavoured fish sauce with a sweet tang) over top it all. You have your choice of bún where you can limit or add the types of meat you want on top, but why bother with anything but their most deluxe offering? All of the above, please!

Honestly, I haven't tried anything else in the restaurant except for this dish, but Thanh Son does theirs wonderfully. It's very generous with its meat portion, and for the price and portion, it's a steal.

Most bún in the city is generally tasty (it's hard to say no to grilled meat in some sweet marinade), but I have yet to find the same value for money and taste as the bún in Thanh Son.

Since I moved to 107st I've been going to thanh Son for two years and their service is always fast and their food always comes out no more then 8 mins after ordering.

My favourite is their Bun Rieu which is a big bowl of soup with rice noodles, tomato, shrimp, and pork with a side plate of beansprouts. My personal favorite Vietnamese dish.

What I find stands out from a lot of Vietnamese places is their Shrimp Rolls. Not their shrimp rolls per say but the home made peanut sauce that comes with it is the best in town in my opinion.

The only reason why I wouldn't rate this place a 5 star is because of their parking lot. Nothing to do with their food and service at all but the parking lot is so tiny and the area of which it is located makes me think twice as to going back sometimes...but I've always went back for more...

I have been going to this place ever since the first owner (I call him one arm bandit cause he was missing an arm but that's not the point)  where was I..oh yes...I have been going here since the first owner opened the restaurant...now mind you the place is a complete dive the kind that you would not want to take a girl on a first date if your intentions is to impress her, but after a few years of being in a relationship with that special person you could take them here day and night 365 days of the freaking year cause the food is oh-so-good! I especfially love the 7 color vermicilli, it's the best that you can get in this two bit town, they even have a grilled giant prawn to top it off minus the head cause western folks don't like it when their food stares back at them, and don't get me started on their spicy lemon grass beef on rice! if fat Albert had to eat his last meal before he rolled off the mountain THIS would be the dish that he would requests. The services is excellent and friendly, the cost for the meals would make Bob Barker proud cause THE PRICE IS RIGHT! the only small issue I have with this restaurant is the washroom, how do I say this...if you closed your eyes and went to their washroom you would have thought you steped into a out house.  Other then that I would recommened this restaurant to anyone!

Asian cuisine isn't my favourite. I find a lot of the food slimy, over-sauced and unappetizing. But some Vietnamese dishes are exceptions. I always have the salad rolls here. They have amazing peanut dipping sauce. Also, their Imperial rolls, which are deep fried yummy spring roll goodness, are to die for - in fact, they're what keep me coming back. I like getting Imperial rolls on rice noodles. It comes with fresh bean sprouts and other veggies, and a tangy sauce that soaks into the spring roll well. The ambiance here is rather stark. It's just a few tables and chairs, a magazine rack, a fish tank with some over-sized and cramped looking fish in it and sea-weedy floating stuff, and a crowd that is culturally-mixed. The neighbourhood's not the best, but I've never witnesses anything untoward here. Service is fairly fast, asian efficient and friendly, and the shop is clean.
