    Thai Express

Ah the food court. Home to a variety of cuisines, all of them fast and served on bright plastic trays. When I was younger I would look at the people eating at a food court and wonder why not spend the extra time and money and go to a restaurant instead. Now that I'm older I can see their wisdom and the value of a quick meal. No more are food courts limited to the usual burger places and cheap Chinese foods, now there are actual choices where fresh and healthy aren't mere marketing buzzwords.

Thai Express takes the Edo of Japan model and improves on it. Food is freshly prepared in front of you; the ingredients don't appear to be 'fresh' from the freezer, and when you ask for spicy they really do spicy. The menu includes basics such as fried rice and Pad Thai all available with your choice of meat or shrimps. A combo adds a medium soft drink and spring roll. Fair warning that the spring roll is mediocre at best, stale and heat lamp warmed at worst. Service is quick which is necessary as there is usually a line waiting to order. In my far too many visits I've only seen an order botched once which given the number of people served is impressive.

There are many options available in the food court however I find after a cursory glance at the others I always end up in line at Thai Express. It may not be authentic, it may not be restaurant quality but it is good and that's all one can ask for at a food court.

5 C, basil, medium spicy, combo, Pepsi.
It may be a sign I've gone to many times when the above line makes perfect sense to me.

In the cutthroat world of mall food, Thai Express stands head and shoulders above the competition. There is nothing like seeing and hearing the searing sizzle of a fire pounding the bottom of a wok while noodles, egg, tofu and chicken come together in the symphony that is a spicy pad thai. Garnish with limes and smother with peanuts, and you are set to enjoy a piping hot plate of goodness, enough to sate you as you return to work. I usually have to wear an apron to avoid messy splotches on my white shirts. So good!

Even if Thai Express is mall food per se, it's probably some of the freshest I've had in a long time, prepared right in front of my eyes. For our lunch, my friend had some spicy fried rice, while I had the veggie pad sew on the spicy side. I always have been a fan of the wide noodles. The serving portion was just right on for me for lunch last weekend, as I was pretty hungry. So should I make another visit to Chinook Centre, I'll be sure to consider Thai Express as a quick meal.
