Review from Debby D.
Burnaby, BC
The place is very simple but the food and service is excellent! My naturopath doctor put my on a gluten-free (no wheat, rye or barley) and vegan (no meat or meat by products like eggs and dairy) diet on November 2011 and I have to stay on it for six months as I developed a protein sensitivity. Imagine trying to eat out. I came to this place and requested Pad Thai with no peanuts (part of the no-no list), no egg and no fish sauce. They fulfilled my request and the Pad Thai was still fantastic!
Friends I went with there ordered other items (curries and sweet n sours with meat in them) and they enjoyed theirs too!
I'm allowed to have their vegan spring rolls...and those rocked! -

This particular Thai restaurant is an exception to my rule.
I've only eaten there once, but it still made it on to my list of Places Where I Love to Eat.
Must be good, huh?
Although I've only been there once, some day, I shall return (it's just that there is an equally good Thai eatery closer to where I live, so I tend to favour it, just because of location.)
We got there fairly early on a Saturday - late afternoon/early evening, in fact - but still had to wait for a table. Part of that is because it is a small space. But it's also because the food is very good.
Like all the best Thai restaurants in the Lower Mainland, it's owned/operated by a native Thai, in this case a Thai lady, Sunida Sirisuwan, who hails originally from northeastern Thailand, but whose cooking is also influenced by the styles found in the southern part of the country.
The food is very good and very authentic (as mentioned in another review, I've eaten authentic Thai food in Thailand, so I can tell the difference). In fact, if you're used to ordering "hot" food as served in some chain or fusion-Thai restaurants in the Lower Mainland, you might want to revise it, here. Their spicy hot IS spicy hot. You'll need a number of cold Thai beers to help wash it down if you're not prepared for that.
The service is good, the food great, no matter what dishes you try.
But be sure to allow for a bit of a wait, as it does tend to be popular around supper time.Listed in: Restaurants Where I LOVE to…

Thai Cafe: A hidden gem in the Burnaby Heights!
As a huge fan of Thai Cuisine, this restaurant has earned its place on my coveted list of places I'd highly recommend to friends and fellow Yelpers.
I've eaten at several Thai restaurants in my heyday and in most cases, the determining factor in what separates the good establishments from the mediocre is the curry. After all, who can say no to a bowl of Thai curry, right?
In my case, the green curry (with pork) and a fresh bowl of rice is a staple item whenever I dine out. Thai Cafe's curry knocked it out of Fenway Park (Boston Red Sox reference.. no?). I found their prices a little more expensive than average, but I thoroughly enjoyed my meal and left with a satisfied stomach and salivating taste buds which certainly makes up for it.
It's comforting to know that there's an excellent and authentic Thai cuisine in my neighbourhood. Try their green curry with medium heat. Two thumbs up - way up!Listed in: Experience Burnaby Heights!

Edit 01/29: I' ve been here twice since my first experience, and it was not good. Pad see ew for lunch was horrible, basically tasteless. If you get something, I would get it with rice whenever possible. The curry is also not at all good.
Spring rolls, freshly yes. Hot, pleasingly yes. Rice, deliciously yes. Protein, not much, but it was good. Veggies, crisply yes.
I'm here for a month, and I don't think think this will be my best meal, but it was a pretty good quick meal. Cute place, parking, and very large portions. Thai for lunch woot woot! -

We were growing a little tired of the standard local Thai spots so we thought to give the Thai Cafe a try. Judging from yelp this is the Thai place to be at in the Burnaby area.
Thai Cafe is a perfect example why yelp is fantastic way to find places to eat. I'm sure I've walked by this place a dozen times before but never had an interest eating here. The interior of the place does not feel inviting, nothing stands out from a crowd.
We ordered spring rolls and a couple of curries and they were delicious. Full of flavour everything was devoured in record speed leaving me wanting more yet unable to eat another bite.
The downside? Well it's cold in there. Since it's cold outside it seemed equally as cold on the inside, almost to the point where I don't recommend going unless it's a little warmer or you have to bring an eating parka.
The service also has a lot to be desired, it is the only reason why this place does not get 5 stars, you come here for the food and the food alone.
Overall I look forward in going back and trying more things on the menu, next time I'll be better prepared with additional layers of clothing. -

Authentic, delicious Thai food. The pad thai here reminds of street pad thai in Bangkok, absolutely fantastic. They even have pad krapow, which I ate almost every day in Thailand, and have not seen on a menu in Vancouver before.
The service wasn't particularly great, but that shouldn't sway you from going. The food is worth it. -

Thai Cafe has good thai food, I will give it that. Really good and flavourful thai curries and yummy coconut rice.
I'd give it 5 stars on the food and flavour alone, but the service wasn't so great (for me at least).
The curry was supposed to have pineapple and peanuts, they seemed to be missing? That was my fault for not asking. Seeing as those ingredients were missing they should have substituted it with more of something else. The portions weren't as big as I thought they would be for the price.
I asked for my beer 3 times until I actually received it. Everyone else at my table had theirs.
Like I said, 4 stars because of the great taste alone. -

Thai Cafe is the business. The pad thai reminded me immediately of street noodles in thailand, which I've never experienced in Vancouver before. The curries and spring rolls were good, but nothing that puts them that far ahead of anyone else.

Hello! Where did you come from??
Yum!! Fresh ingredients, great flavor and a hole in the wall concept. I'm not sure how long this place has been here for, but it's sure popular.
Thank you fellow yelpers for introducing me to this place. Heart you long time! :) -
Review from Eva B.
I have been going to the Thai Cafe for the last five years as it is a good lunch option for me. Even though the price of the lunch special has gone up the quality or quantity has not gone down. Plus lunch for under $10 is still a pretty good deal. Sometimes this place gets pretty packed at noon and service gets a little spotty, but not so bad I would have a tantrum and storm out or anything. That said, if you are going with a group definitely make a reservation.
All the lunch specials are pretty solid. The portions are large and they all come with a small soup, rice and a spring roll. You get a choice of tofu or different meats with each curry so they can be transformed even for the pickiest of eaters. I like the red curry and the swimming ramma.
I went here today and for the first time ordered off the regular menu so everybody could share. I was really impressed with the curries and the soup we ordered. I even liked the pad thai as it wasn't sweet and bright red like most places prepare it (ketchup = gross). I was not so impressed with the salads as there were not enough bright flavors and there was too much ice berg lettuce hiding on the bottom of the plate.
Of course I will be heading back here again. I can't help myself. I think next time I go I will try something all together different. I figure I have a good chance of finding something else I like. Plus I can't get enough of the little tamarind candy they give you when you pay. -

This place is unreal actually. I love Thai food and I've got to say, this is the best Thai I've had in the Vancouver Lower Mainland so far. Service is great and the food was very fresh and full of great flavor. The Pad Thai was outstanding and I highly recommend.

Gem of the Burnaby Heights! So proud to have this around the neighbourhood.
The place is really small and the decor is minial, but the food, aaaah, yes, the food...
Of course, the place is run by Thai and the taste of the food is authentic (yes, that's how food should be...unless you are doing some weird fusion food). I would recommend anyone to give this place a try.
Prices are standard to other Thai places. -

Excellent, and they don't use MSG (the man I spoke to - l think he was the owner - is actually allergic to MSG himself). My wife is allergic and she's had reactions from other places that claim to not use it, but it was obviously in something they used. She's never had any problems here. The green curry is fantastic.

Chose lunch special L1 $8.95 with Tofu and a Thai Iced Tea. The dish started with a bowl of light semi-clear soup with a hint of noodles surrounded by a green leafy veg. Perfectly timed my dish arrived: a large portion of exotic vegetable engulfed yellow curry with tofu with an equally generous portion of rice with a spring roll to keep them all happy. Lovely

The Pad Thai is a must! Service was prompt despite being quite busy. The waiter was friendly and helpful. The price is right and the portions were good for that price. Only thing thats missing is the coconut milk drinks that other Thai restaurants have, but I'm going back there again next week ! I can't wait!

LOVE this place. Perfect, fresh Thai food in a casual diner setting. I would say that we're probably regulars at this point. Also: best spring rolls ever!

Had lunch here recently. Wow what a great cook! I had a lovely dish (L14) - Tofu with broccoli and spinach in peanut sauce, wow so great!!! you can order your own lever of spiciness. Perfect for me, cause I can only eat very mild food. The lunch special price is perfect, but the prices are very good even without the special. The restaurant was full already at 11.50, no need to wait for noon to get served here. Waitress was quick and friendly, the food was excellent and the portions were great. Hope to go back soon again.
