My favourite yellow curry anywhere. Actually when I go for Thai now at other places I refuse to order yellow curry because in my experience nowhere has been as good as Thai Away Home.
I'm crave it often and I wish I could transport this restaurant to Calgary with me!
Also the salad they serve alongside the curry with the sweet onion dressing is also fantastic. Something in that dressing that is addictive! -

Thai Away Home, I have a question for you.... WHAT HAPPENED?!?!?!
I used to love your Pad Thai. A stop at your Cambie location was a bi-monthly treat that I always looked forward to.
But all that changed yesterday. I was on my way home from work, when the light bulb went off in my head. It had been a while since I had treated myself to some Pad Thai, and I had a serious hankering for some Thai deliciousness.
I called in my order of chicken Pad Thai (with extra sauce please!) and 15 minutes later, my meal was being handed to me, piping hot and ready to go.
I rushed home, eager to lace into my delicious meal.
I rushed through my front door, threw my purse/jacket/other purchases on the ground, grabbed a fork from the kitchen and prepared to be transported to the land of Thai-Narnia.
I opened the to go box and peeked inside and....Hmmm. Weird. The sauce looks... different. I cautiously brought a sample of the sauce to my mouth and.... IT WAS KETCHUP!!!! I SWEAR TO GAD, IT WAS KETCHUP!!! How can these people try to pass off ketchup as Pad Thai sauce?!?!?! I was shocked, appalled and devastated.
Needless to say, I was a bit broken-hearted to have to abruptly end my relationship with Thai Away Home, but I've already picked myself up, dusted myself off, and I'm ready to give a new Thai restaurant a chance.
Here goes nothing. Wish me luck!!!
;D

I'm still new to the area, so based on other yelp recommends I went here after taking a short walk on Cambie. I'm so glad I did! it was delicious.
I had the Cashew Chicken combo which comes with soup, salad, rice and a spring roll. It was all delicious. Quick, good quality food with a large portion (I couldn't finish it all).
I will definitely be going back - looks like I may have found my stand-by Thai place. -

Stopped in during a visit home. I've been away for 3 years and the food just isn't as good as I remember it to be. Still...the food is decent and is reasonably priced. The decor and layout are much more inviting and functional. I'll give it another try when I go back to Vancouver. This place used to be one that I frequented. I might have just caught them on an off day :)

This place gets five stars because it is LITERALLY as good as it gets for me in terms of Thai food restaurants. I have a peanut allergy. It's terrible enough that it will kill me if i eat a peanut or two, but not so bad that i need to worry too much if a few other meals with nuts are prepared in the same restaurant. This is the only place i trust with my life!
Typically, i avoid Thai restaurants like the plague because it seems like every other dish has peanut in it, and due to language barriers and vague menu descriptions, i don't feel confident enough that my dish will be nut-free. This place actually only has a few nut dishes, and the first time i went i was really impressed that the staff there could tell me exactly what each dish contained and what i should avoid. Their menu seems pretty basic, but i'm totally fine with this because it means their food isn't a minefield of deadly nuts.
I had never had Thai food in my life aside from a few so-so curries i had tried making at home, so I don't have much to compare it to, but holy shit, if all Thai food is this good i am totally missing out!! Their curries are really flavorful and their veggies always seem very fresh! I usually end up ordering a curry combo with prawn and have never been disappointed. Their food is a favorite on cold, lazy days because it warms you up without being too heavy like most comfort foods. If you're like me and have been forced to avoid Thai food all your life, you need to go here asap!!Listed in: Please Don't Kill Me!

As far as take-away Thai food goes, this is pretty good. We usually get one order of yellow curry (dinner) and one stir fry, and when we get it home, we dish up two big plates from the two dishes.
It's so good it seems sinful. Price is pretty good at about $22 for two big meals.Listed in: Quick dinners

Have been going almost once a week for years. Have tried many Thai restaurants all over the city and none can come close to this little take-out place.

My go-to Thai place on Cambie (Arroy-D) closed, so it was time to look into another option for takeout. Thai Away Home isn't likely to be it, unfortunately. I ordered the chicken with cashew nuts, and my husband had curry. We ordered ahead, so at least we didn't have to stand in line. But when we got the food home a few minutes later and started eating, we were both unimpressed.
The chicken with cashew nuts was, I guess, exactly as described: a stir-fry with chicken, onions, peppers, and cashews. And that's pretty much all you taste -- not much in the way of seasoning or flavour added. I could have bought peppers and some chicken and done better -- although I'd have been no closer to making a Thai dish. The spring rolls were okay, on the other hand -- not a standout, but not soggy, at least -- about what you'd expect at most Asian restaurants.
What are my credentials for judging Thai food, you ask? Well, I've spent time in remote parts of Thailand, and yes, obviously I ate while I was in Thailand. I've also eaten a lot of Thai food around the world. Thai Away Home's food was about on par with Thai food in Germany (not much spice or flavour -- Germans hate spices other than caraway, salt & pepper).
Guess we'll keep looking for a good Thai place. Next stop? Sala Thai. -

I'm not a big fan of Asian food, but man, this stuff is delicious. My friends and I are obsessed with their yellow curry combo, and their delectable spring rolls. Their pad Thai is also very tasty, and their chicken satay was delicious as well. I love this place so much!

I'm going to give a real simple review for this place.
I really Like Thai Away Home. But then again, I'm a sucker for the very popular dish Pad Thai. I can never get away from ordering Pad Thai, it's just too irresistable. Their version is sweet, has both chicken and tofu and shrimp, which I love and they give you lots of crushed peanuts to go with it. yummmy delicious. -

Thai is my favourite food and Thai Away Home is my favourite Thai restaurant in Vancouver. I have been here over 5 times now and I have never had a bad experience. The food tastes amazing and is such good value. I have taken 3 different people here and they have loved it just as much as me. This is a casual place with some seating. I usually order the spring rolls plus the yellow or red curry with either chicken or tofu. This place deserves 5 stars , the food is that good!!!!!

After walking by a few times and reading the rave reviews on Thai Away Home, I decided a rainy night was reason enough to order in. I got the green and yellow curries and some jasmine rice for me and my roommate.
I obviously can't say much about the service (the delivery was on time and cost $2.5, if you're interested), but I was somewhat disappointed with the food.
It could very well be that curry is not this particular restaurant's specialty. For that matter, it could well be that this was not really a restaurant at all. Barring these possibilities, it seems that its just not the best Thai place around.
The yellow curry was good enough, but not at all memorable (sweet and coconut-y, nothing new) - this is what I expect from any Thai place. The green curry was disappointing, and the quality of the chicken left much to be desired - it was far from fresh. The spring rolls were as food court-y as they get. Don't worry about spiciness - you'll get none.
The place was not bad. It just wasn't as good as the reviews claim it to be. One very good thing about the place was the price - we had a hearty meal for about 12 dollars each (and some leftovers).
I will give them one more shot before discarding them altogether, maybe trying some of the Entrées instead.
------
Update: Tried it one more time and decided it was fine for take-out. Just don't veer too much from the coconut-curry path and you'll be fine.
It is not a fancy or inventive Thai restaurant, but I don't think it pretends to be. Classic Chinese Take-out quality...except its Thai. -
Review from Leroy L.
Thai Away Home is like the McDonald's of Thai restaurants, but I have to admit I'm a fan. When I need that quick Thai fix, this is where I go. I usually get the Combo A($9.95), which is your choice of entree or curry(Yellow curry with Chicken for me!), rice, spring roll, salad and soup(if you dine-in) or I'll get an order of Pad Thai($9.95). The yellow curry is spicy and sweet at the same time, but it could use a little bit more spice. The Pad Thai is tangy and delicious! Although I haven't had this in a while, I do recommend the Swimming Rama(Chicken or Tofu & Spinach in a spicy peanut sauce) as well. Good service, good food, and great for take-out!

Can't get enough of green curry even after eating it for 6 weeks straight in Thailand. This no-frills restaurant serves some of the tastiest curry in the city.

When I see people list their favorite Thai places and they aren't aware of Thai Away Home, I know they are noobs. A little different than the rest and not too hot. Pad Thai is sweet and tangy. Yellow curry poured over white rice is hot and sweet. This location has stools at counters but in the summer they put out small tables on the sidewalk. Quick service since they do a brisk take out business. Service is odd but efficient. No bathroom. No booze.

Review from Evilyn T.
I came here for dinner last night because I am getting really tired of being creative and cooking up vegan dishes. I only have ten more days to go, and I think they might all involve take-out. I had the Swimming Rama combo with tofu, as did my BF. Our dinner arrived very quickly and was nice and hot, which was good because I was nice and stinky from the gym. I ate too much and had a stomach ache, but that just means that everything was delicious!

I'm not a huge Thai fan, but was quite impressed with this place. Very limited seating and a small patio, but healthy sized portions. There aren't any menus for the outside tables, so you'll have to go inside to order.

I used to live close to Urban Thai Bistro in Yaletown and got hooked on Thai! I moved a few blocks from Thai away home and was psyched to have thai so close again. I went there once and could not even eat my curry because it was really not very good. I'm afraid to go back and try other things.

Any time I need a Thai food fix this is my place. It's easy to swing by and order takeout. Keep the number on speed dial and pre order from the office like I do. They are so fast. You can bring it home and feast on some really flavourful comfort food. Even if you are not familiar with Thai dishes, go ahead and order anything on the menu. Sure the Pad Thai is always excellent but the yellow curry ! Yum. At peak times there will be a lineup but don't worry. You won't have to wait long.
