Terrace Fifty-Five replaces the Tavern in the Park's location in Assiniboine Park's Pavilion. I always loved the ambiance when Tavern was here and am glad that Terrace did not drastically change the decor. They've added quite a few curved leather booths, but I am not a fan of this addition as I found the chairs to be too "heavy" for this airy room. Also, there were two large patio umbrellas inside, to keep the sun away from diners through the glass roof at lunch time but looked quite distracting in the room.
I was surprised by how quiet the restaurant was on a Friday evening, there were only four other tables when we arrived at 6:30 pm. The place only filled to about 60% as the evening progressed. Even though it wasn't a full house, I have to say it's a nice change to dine in a restaurant where the noise level isn't distracting.
The menu was difficult to categorize on yelp as there's no option to choose "regional Canadian". There's lots of seafood and meat dishes to choose from. Most appetizers average $14 and entrees range between $18-$38. The food portions are quite generous here as I noticed quite a few diners took doggy bags home. Even I had to take part of my veal chop home!
The West Coast Honey Brown Mussels are only available when it's in season. Wow, were these mussels amazing! I almost always order mussels whenever it appears on a menu and usually the mussels around town are pretty average or sometimes on occasion, a little fishy tasting (yuck). The only other place where I had great mussels was at Oui Bistro (another restaurant owned by Wow! Hospitality), where they use to carry Salt Spring mussels that were so tender and juicy but rarely ever available. These Honey Brown mussels definitely ranks as one of the best mussels I've ever had. They were very large, yet super tender and juicy and tasted divine in the creamy Pernod sauce (which was great to sop up with their delicious crusty baguettes).
I had the Milk Fed Veal Chop ($38) which was pan seared & topped with wild mushrooms and pearl onions in a Madeira Sauce with spaetzel. I rarely order veal but this dish was cooked perfectly on the bone. It was a rather large piece of meat that was very juicy and tender which the kitchen cooks to medium. Downside was that there wasn't enough sauce on the plate and the spaetzel was a potato/flour mixture that was pan fried and tasted more like a very chewy gnocchi than the spaetzel I am accustomed to (I prefer the boiled noodle like spaetzel more).
The 12 ounce Sterling Silver New York Steak ($35) comes with potatoes and seasonal vegetables. It was cooked perfectly to order, medium rare, but could have used a bit more seasoning.
The Braised Beef Short Ribs ($27) were glazed with a sweet Manitoba Maple BBQ Sauce. Two generous sized short ribs (on the bone) were tender and flavourful and came with fingerling potatoes and seasonal vegetables.
The cheesecake made with chèvre cheese was silky smooth and came with a sour cherry compote ($7). It was a generous sized portion that could be easily shared. The cheesecake had a nice tang from the chèvre but it was a little too sweet for my tastes as I prefer my cheesecakes to be more rich and savoury.
Service was friendly and attentive.
I was a bit surprised that the online menu pricing did not match the menu's price for a couple of dishes I had. The mussels were listed as $12 online but we were charged $14 and the veal chop was listed as $33 and charged $38. But everything else lined up to the online menu. -

When I was at the Terrance's last year, i ordered a fillet mignon and was quite disappointed. The meat was tough and over salted. The customer service was excellent. They did not hesitate to take my dish back, however the meat was still unsatisfactory. The ambience of the restaurant is one of the best in the city. I have heard that the restaurant has improved since I have gone there and I would try it again at some point.

I dined with my wife and another couple at Terrace 55 last Saturday evening. The atmosphere has not changed much or at all since the former Tavern in the Park. Overall the decor seemed dated.
The service was good, but there were some sloppy moments such as the serving of our wine. For appetizers we had the Terrace 55 salad, mussels, and the seafood chowder. The salad presentation was nice, but not much else. The mussels listed on the menu were not available, but they had a wine and cream based sauce which was pretty good. The presentation was well done. The seafood chowder was the best of the three. It was a nice touch that they brought a plate of the seafood so you can see how much they gave you before pouring over the chowder.
The waitress suggested the Veal Chop was "To die for". Three of us ordered the veal chop, and while it was good, it was not memorable. The sides were not a good choice which contributed to the poor presentation. The other member of our group had the New York steak which was good, but not great.
The restaurant is quite a bit pricey for the quality of food you are getting. I was also a little disappointed to see the menu prices higher than that prices listed online. While the restaurant was quite full I am not sure how many people would come back. There are so many restaurants that are far better for this price range (The Lobby on York, The District, Fusion Grill, Bistro 7/14, Fazzo, Infernos Bistro to name a few).
