4 Stars for Ten Thousand Villages!
This store has cool stuff, like indie-type clothing and home decor kind of things. You have to be into the hippie kind of look to find things you like, but if you are, it's a gold mine.
I'm pretty sure a portion of the proceeds are donated to some great organizations so you can feel good while you shop here, too!
A great spot to stop during a stroll along Whyte. -

Ten Thousand Villages specializes in handmade gifts and crafts by artisans from around the globe. They are a non-profit fair-trade organization, and also a member of the International Fair Trade Organization. Artisans are paid a fair amount for their work, to sustain a healthy and respectable lifestyle.
The store carries a vast range of home decor and gift items, including tea sets, bowls, jewelry, scarves, toys, CD's, and fair trade coffee and chocolate. Represented nations include Kenya, the Philippines, Vietnam, India, and Peru. Everything is exquisite, in a way that only handmade talent can create. All the items are labelled with where they were made, so you know what bit of culture you're taking home with you.
They currently have some amazing items out for the holiday season now, from ornaments to hand-carved nativity scenes. It'd be cool to have a tree covered in ornaments that represented different cultures from around the world.
While some pieces are a bit more than elsewhere, keep in mind that these are handmade and fair trade. I think it's well worth the price, to have something so exquisite, and know that the hands with which that piece was made were given a fair value. -

Ten thousand villages has been around forever so that speaks volumes for how good this place is.
You can find items from all around the world here. They carry things like jewelry, CD's, bamboo furniture, fair trade coffee and clothing. They also carry lots of instruments from their native countries which is really awesome to see.
Great place with great prices. -

This is now one of my favorite stores in Edmonton. The concept of the store is incredibly unique. This store has some of the most beautiful imports that I have ever seen! I had to refrain from buying everything I saw! I found some amazingly beautiful polished stone tea light holders (about the size of a coffee mug) and expected them to be fairly expensive but they were only $14! Everything was very decently priced. I even picked up some early Christmas presents! The variety of cultural imports in this store was incredible (Africa, Pakistan . . . ). I love Love LOVE it! And to make I even better, it is a fair trade store (meaning that the places that the imports come from are not getting ripped off). I also discovered that they have a registry so for anyone about to walk down the isle - check it out!

Ten Thousand Villages is like a treasure trove from around the world. All of the goods here are certified Fair Trade, which means the producers received a decent wage for their work. You can find coffee and chocolate, toys, jewelry, household items, and things you may never have even though of before. I have friends how shop here regularly for coffee, and I myself have picked up the occasional chocolate bar or funky ring or necklace made in a third world country. All of these items are hand made and come from places like Indian, Peru, Palestine, Kenya, and elsewhere in Asia, African, and South America. Some of the items are seasonal, while others are available year-round.

I really like the concept of this store: sell products from artisans around the world and give them part of the profits. I also like the fact that the employees here are volunteers. I am not, however, crazy about the selection or the prices. I came here to do some Christmas shopping recently and nothing really caught my eye. There was a few wooden pieces that were nice, but they were very pricey. I also loved the hammock. The decorative bowls and things made entirely out of newspaper were really cool. They have some good organic, free-trade foods as well, but the selection is rather small. I got some beautiful Christmas ornaments though for 50% off. This store is okay, but it's not one of my favourites.
