For a long time I thought this place was really weird and out of place on Main street. The cheesy and poorly-used laser light show on the sidewalk has weirded me out more than once. Also, it's a steak lounge. In East Van. Really?
But actually, this is a darn fine place to come have a drink. Cozy, eclectically decorated, cheerful and friendly staff. -

As another reviewer pointed out, the menu as well as the wine list are brief and to the point. However, my wife and I had two of the nicer steak meals we've ever had in Vancouver, and for a very good price too.
I had the special - a 10 oz sirloin with prawns, garlic mash and seasonal veg - all for just $19.00! I added a brandy cream mushroom sauce so it turned out to be a little more (oi my aching heart!) Both our meals were delicious, the service was excellent and very friendly. The decor is great and the music - I've never been in a "punk rock steakhouse" before! Guess it wasn't all punk, but mostly stuff from the 80s that a geezer like me loves.
Lots of big screen TVs - looks like a great place to watch a game. Anyhow I know that's not everyone's cup of tea but I loved Tempest - so unpretentious! Places like this are what makes Main so much better than the Drive. -

I noticed Tempest moved into the SoMA neighbourhood and was interested in checking out the new kid on the block.
We were greeted warmly at the door and sat at a table near the window. There was a hockey game on the big screen but it wasn't too annoying to us or noisy.
Looking over the menu, there was a good range of appetizers and 4-5 steak choices. Not a steak eater? Don't worry, there are a few entree items for the non-steak eaters. My dining partner chose the filet mignon with potato au gratin & seasonal veggies (carrots/broccoli). I wasn't as hungry so I chose the sliders with a side of yam fries.
The meal took a bit longer than I would have liked to arrive, particularly since it was really late at night and I didn't think the restaurant was that busy. When it finally did arrive, my items were lukewarm so it was clear it was sitting and waiting for the other food to finish. The result was rather limp yam fries. The sliders were good, large enough to be a full meal even though they were listed as an appy.
I stole a few bites from my partner's plate and thought it was not bad. The steak was cooked well, though the taste was just okay...nothing to write home about. The potatoes were piping hot and tasted good. The vegetables were simple, nothing that I remembered to be fantastic.
All in all, a just okay experience but nothing truly standout. For the price, I would rather go somewhere else. -

A new week another new restaurant...
I have been waiting for this steakhouse to open, and it finally has. I was greeted with friendly cheery staff. We sat at the bar which takes up one half of the one room restaurant. Four tv screens above the bar and one giant one at back wall of the room. They had nice techno lounge music on instead of the tv sound. The menu is mainly steak and very limited. So I ordered the steak sandwich.
The staff are all very chatty as they have just opened and want feed back. The manager "Jonas" is from the now closed Morton's Steakhouse. My steak sandwich was very tasty with sliced sirloin steak, lots of grilled onions & cheese.... although it could have used a bit more steak, how ever priced well. They have just opened and seem to be making an effort to please, as it was fairly empty. I love the location and it could be a great place to watch a few hockey games. I will be back after they have had a chance to get a bit more settled.Listed in: The Main St Event

This place actually caught me by surprise. We were actually trying to go to Cascade but the wait was too long.
When we got to Tempest, we were sat fairly quick......helpfull staff, drink order was within 2mins of being seated. Now they didn't have a drink menu at the time I went not sure if this has changed however the waitress stated they have a full bar so we could order what we pleased.
We wanted some drinks and snack food.......I really wish I could remember what the others in my group ordered, however my steak sliders were too good, made me forget everything else at the table.
I am planning on going back, they have a 32oz porter house on the menu with my name on it. -

About 6 weeks ago I showed up at the Tempest and discovered that they had not yet opened. Had a brief chat with one of the management staff and was assured that they would be providing cuts of meat that would rival the traditional, high-end steak houses. At first, I thought he was crazy for not managing my expectations, but then I went. The menu is short and to the point but a whole page of starters provides a range of tasty bites to warm up the palate or share over a drink. After devouring the crispy prawns with Thai chili sauce, I picked a cut of meat. Accompanying your protein is a choice of two sides. Potato gratin and seasonal veggies were my selections but it might as well have been duck bills and compost scraps because the steak was so perfectly done that the rest of the plate had no chance of competing. The wine list is brief but more than sufficient to nicely round out the meal (recommend: "The Show", Cab/Sav, California). This isn't your stuffy, bow-tied, high-priced steak house but it tastes like it.
Enjoy. -

Atmosphere was cozy, staff attentive and friendly. Steaks were great - well cooked, juicy and flavourful. Caesar salad could have used a little more dressing. The bacon wrapped filet appetizer was amazing! Overall excellent. For the price-point cloth napkins would have been nice.
