BEST BUBBLE TEA EVER! I come up from New York once a year to visit family and we make as many trips here as possible. I LOVE the avocado bubble tea. They moved to a new location over the summer - 101 ST. AND 109 A AVE.

Also they make their teas with REAL fruit unlike the places in New York which makes them with powder. Extra delicious!

Bubble tea is as delicious as it is addictive, and there is no better place to sample its sweet taste than at The Tea Cottage.  The no-frills, non-descript interior of wooden chairs and tables are accented by the crates of fresh fruits and boxes of syrup bottles that line the walls.  Behind the counter there are usually two server working furiously to keep up with the demand and lineups.

But what exactly is "bubble tea" you ask?  Don't let the name fool you.  Many of the drinks don't even have tea in them.  The "bubble" part refers to the spaces in the wide straw between the soft balls of tapioca that one slurps up in the process of drinking.  The tapioca is referred to by the Asian name "Sago" and are chewy, golden-brown balls made from the starch of sweet potatoes.  They also look like bubbles, which is an alternate explanation for the drink's name. For people who dislike the texture, the drinks can be made without sago but it's worth trying - the sago is essentially flavourless and a lot of fun to chew!

The drinks themselves have a syrup or fresh fruit base, mixed with milk, juice, or tea.  They are 32 ounces and shaken in a plastic cup, over which a colourful thin plastic cover is attached.  When the drink is ready, the customer stabs the very wide straw through the cover, and enjoys pure taste pleasure.

Syrup-based drinks are very sweet and available in a variety of fruit flavours.  There are also coffee varieties, from plain coffee to mocha, to coffee with almond.  By far the most popular drinks are the ones with fresh fruit.  Mixed with ice, fruit, syrup, and the milk, juice, or tea base, the creation is essentially a smoothie with a sweet kick.   Some of the varieties include strawberry, cantaloupe, and avocado.  Yes, avocado is a fruit, and it makes a very tasty smoothie - a nutty flavour with just a hint of sweetness.

Since bubble tea originated in Taiwan, there are also a lot of uniquely Asian flavours to try, such as the gritty and vanilla-like taro root and lychee.  You can find all of this and more at the Tea Cottage, as well as a variety of hot coffee and tea drinks.  So get adventurous, and you might just find yourself going back for more.

Say goodbye to ice cream milkshakes...WHY you say?  Its cuz you have an adventure waiting in at the Tea Cottage.  You get these variety of drink mixes from tea to fresh fruit mixes to slushes.  Then you have a choice of adding some Sago or what some people call the BUBBLES in BUBBLE TEA.  I like to call them perfect for a drink spitball.  What is sago, well let me educate you for a bit here.  Sago is a starch that comes from a sago palm leaf that is refined and made into these pearls, a lil water and brown sugar and syrup, you get these lil bite size of goodness.  Now with the drinks there are other lil edibles that can be included like my favorite green apple jellies, lychee, etc.

This was the first place I have ever tried the craze of bubble tea.  The first drink I had was Banana milk with Pearls.  I loved it right off the bat.  i started to experiment with flavors and the one flavour I will always get is Avocado with lychee bites.   YUMMY!  Its so thick its like a lil meal, i usually drink one of these if I missed a meal.  Its so good!

Now the venue, it is kinda in a bad part of Edmonton.  There is always a few people asking for money and what not.  i would recommend going while there is daylight by yourself or with a group of friends.  inside the Tea cottage I don't think they have very much storage, lot of their fruit is in plain view by the tables.  I usually just take my drink and leave.

Anywho, bubble tea you will find a lot of different places, go out and try 1.  Try the avocado, you'll love it!  if you don't let me know...

Tea Cottage is the main competition for Tea Bar for bubbletea in Chinatown. It never really struck me as having a great atmosphere to stay and lounge around in, for some reason. I think it's because it's small and looks really basic; tables and chairs, a few Asian posters on the walls, that's it. And they usually serve their drinks in the disposable to-go cups, so might as well take it to go and stroll around the area. I find Tea Cottage to be fresh sometimes, but not all the time. They use a lot of flavoured powder, but I prefer the real thing, like fresh fruit. All in all, Tea Cottage is okay and I'd go there if my friends suggested it, but my top choice for bubbletea is always Dream Tea on the south side of town.
