Review from Sarah A.
How had I never been to Tartine before? Maybe because it is hidden in a nest of condos a few blocks away from the seawall? Or maybe just because everyone wanted to keep this little hidden gem to themselves? In any case, I am very glad that I found it, but also slightly frightened as it is dangerously close to my neighbourhood and their goodies are not exactly calorie-free.
One of the first things that I noticed was the tremendously long list of available pies to choose from (you can take an entire pie home with you) including pumpkin and key lime and something called Flapper Pie (custard and meringue!). They also sell very good coffee, bread, granola, cookies and other pastries like tarts (my friend insisted I try a sour cherry tart - and for good reason). I bought some goodies to take home and they were all fantastically delicious.
Seating here is limited. It seems to be frequented by hoards of spry joggers rewarding themselves with a treat at the end of their run (kudos to them, as I just waddled in and waddled out again), so tables quickly filled up.
I highly recommend stopping by to pick up a cherry tart or a loaf of bread or some ginger cookies to go (ohmygod so good). -

Few things are as valued by the light lunch seeker as a affordable but delectable sandwich. We could turn to the fast food style sandwich places but I find that they often disappoint with over processed meats and cheeses. On one of my many downtown wanders I found Tartine on Beach Avenue. A cozy little spot offering super fresh bread and sandwiches for the lunchtime nosher.
I am a total sucker for a good bakery. The aroma as you walk by, teasing you to come in and partake in home baked goodness. Baking bread from scratch is a true art form, one I hope to master someday. But until then, I have places like Tartine where you can purchase breads and pies baked by hand and exquisite in detail and flavor.
My lunch choice was the Roast Turkey sandwich. Not processed...the real bird! Loaded with tomatoes, cucumber, lettuce and a perfect cranberry mayo. All stuffed in between their fresh baked multigrain bread. I know it might seem like a simple concept of putting cranberries with turkey, but mashing them into the mayo is bloody genius.
Being as Tartine is renowned for their baking, I felt it was necessary to try one of their squares. My cherry cobbler square was divine and loaded with butter. Nice finish to a fresh sandwich. I have always believed that if a restaurant can excel at the simple things then they have it made. Something as classic as a good sandwich can and is messed up by places who skimp on the details. Support those places who take the details to heart and you will support a changing face of the traditional sandwich shop. -

Cute little bakery/sandwich shop located near the Vancouver Aquatics Centre. I dropped in after swimming one day and got a mini Blueberry tart and it was awesome!!!
I love little tarts because it's a little guilty pleasure that you can finish in few bites. The blueberry centre was gooey and sweet. Yum!!!
I vowed to come back and get more next time I was in the area and few days later I found myself passing by there again. This time I got a BLT sandwich and few tarts to take home to share with the hubby. What I didn't realize was that BLT was $7.95.
Little steep for a BLT. Few years back I worked at a little cafe in Yaletown and BLT there was $3.95. I got over my shock and had my sandwich but I am not sure if I will get it again here.
The tarts were delicious and my hubby enjoyed them too. I might just stick to the baked goods next time.
If you are in the area, check them out. A little shop with a big flavour! -

Tartine, you did good.
I walked in for 1 reason & 1 reason alone: cherry tarts!
Listed in the Best 101 Things to Eat&Drink by Vancouver Magazine in 2011, I was curious. Dubious but curious.
You see, I'm a cherry addict. Gimme a bag of those rubies & I will go to town.
Cherry desserts on the other hand? Pass.
Until this place happened. These folks are giving cherries the respect they deserve!
Encased in a flaky, shortbread-like crust in all their full, skin-on, tart & sweet glory.
No mutated, sugar-doused rendition here - just real fruit, done reallly right! -

Went for a sandwich today as I had heard good things about them. Ordered the roast beef and, while it was good, it didn't do anything to blow me away. If anything, the price at $6.95 plus tax was too much for what I got (and especially given the location, not exactly a high traffic area).
I didn't try any baked good other than my multigrain bread (which was tasty mind you) so perhaps I'm not the market they're really going for. -
Review from Jen H.
Came for a work lunch, which was kind of tough b/c almost all of the tables were full, seating was cramped and I'm with 2 tall guys. Nevertheless, we worked it out. Hearty bowls of chili, big roast beef sammies, chix salad on croissant, random sides and desserts = all homemade, tasty and a great find off the beaten path! The ladies here really put love into the food, so though it's not a quick in and out business lunch crowd, you'll be delighted with every bite.
Love makes food tastier. -

My review is based on two pies that I bought for a relaxed shindig I was having at my place. I bought a strawberry rhubarb and an elderberry pie. The strawberry rhubarb was a hit. It was pretty much finished by the time my guests left. Now as a testament to how good the pies are I sent the pies home with my guests and though they weren't as big a fan of the elderberry (personal preference not the pie itself), they finished that within a day also. So that just shows you that even their "bad" pies are good.
The crusts are flaky and exactly the way I like them. I ordered the pies earlier that day and when I came in to pick them up that evening they were waiting and there were no issues with picking it up. Plus, no crazy lines. You gotta love that. -

I love me some tarts, tarts, tarts. I need those tarts, tarts, tarts. Give me those tarts, tarts, tarts.
Tartine bread has become a staple in my kitchen (not sliced, thanks!), and every week or so, I skip out to "grocery shop" and give myself a wee tarty treat - a cherry tart to be exact! Trust me, it's the stuff addictions are made of...
Also, don't forget that a whole pie for a dinner party will be a welcome by all, and a guarantee that you'll be invited back. Pumpkin pie with fresh whipped cream? Now that I wish was the staple in my kitchen!Listed in: Favourite Vancouver…, 5 Star Reviews - You deserve…, Vancouver's Coffee Culture: A…, A Guide to Vancouver's Dining…, Comfort Carbs

I invited a few friends to Tartine to try out their butter tarts and pies. I enjoyed the taste of the pie as it was not too sweet. The butter tart was nice but I definitely prefer the pie over the tart. My friends also enjoyed the taste of the desserts. I had my dog with me so we sat outside Tartine at one of their tables. Tartine is nice but I would only go there sometimes because their prices are a bit high for me.

Tartine is built for mornings. Or afternoons. Whenever you wake up, really. From my Beach Ave apt, there's no closer source of morning comfort. Be it to perk me up at a reasonable time, or those dreaded 11am wakeups, Tartine is there when I need it.
I should elaborate that Tartine's official bakery designation is of bread and pies. I shall delve into the baked goods shortly, but first I must dwell on the coffee. In my humble, coffee guzzling opinion, it is without fail the finest in the city. I prefer my coffee black, but so often I must dilute it with milk out of sheer necessity. Starbucks, Blenz, or the god-awful experiments I've attempted in my kitchen do not produce coffee fit for consumption. And so I add milk. Yes, it is drinkable. But so is Sambuca, and I draw no pleasure from consuming that dastardly potion.
But I digress. The point I must convey is that the coffee is a cut above. Or a cup above. Get it? That's a little coffee humour for you. Moving on.
And so on to the baked goods. So. Damn. Good. I've always gravitated towards the morning glory muffin, it's sugar free and disintegrates in your mouth. Also, love me a good pie. I can easily eat an entire pie in a single sitting. I refrain, but I want you to know that I could. The New York maple cream is life changing. Indulge; your world will be altered for the better.
The sandwiches and soups are up to the usual spec of private bakeries. Hearty and filling, if you're peckish in the 'hood, try the havarti, tomato and cucumber. I would advise eating at the bakery however, as the bread tends to moisten quickly from the succulence of the fillings. That is perhaps the most negative thing I can say about Tartine and I'm fairly sure it's also a veiled compliment.
Tartine is well known to the locals around it, but is secluded and removed from the city. Vancouver, because I love you so, I happily inform you of this gem. Like Jesus, it's time to spread the word. -

They really make great pies. I just tried their pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving and I was impressed by the freshness and not so sweet taste to it. It was light, smooth with a solid custard-like consistency. It was lightly spicy with a mostly cinnamon taste to it. The perfect pie for the Fall season.

Wonderful breads, very good croissant, and some delicious pies (some less successful - apple, lemon and butter are delish), and this summer they had the very best strawberry cake with strawberry icing.
Mixed signals on whether the bread is safe for folks with nut allergies (sister-in-law), but the rustic white and seeded bread are pure heaven both fresh and toasted.
A joy to beckon from my balcony. Prices are below bakery averages in the area (specifically Granville Island across the creek.)
Minus one point for the weight I gained and now I have to use some restraint when stopping in. -

Cute little place by the seawall. Good prices and nice little sweets. I ordered some tarts and croissants. The tarts had lots of filling but they tasted like canned filling. The croissants were buttery and flaky.
A nice little find in the neighbourhood. -

At what point should I be seeking professional help for a tart addiction?
Four in two days is totally fine. But, is it sick that I am considering going here every morning for my pastry fix?
The sour cherry, blueberry, and BUTTER tarts are only $1.50 each, and I can eat two in under 20 seconds. Apparently I can order big pies 24 hours in advance for $16, leaving me a full day to mentally and stomachly prepare.
This has got to be better than most addictions. I won't lose my friends over it. I won't have to live on the streets. And I won't lose my teeth (I go to the dentist every six months). My clothes will be stained, but with sour cherry ooze. Not grime.
On second tart, I mean thought, I am totally OK. I don't need help. I just need a bite of flaky Tartine-ness to take the edge off.Listed in: West Ender, Baked Goods, Best Breaky

Although I'm not much of a pie person, we decided to try Tartine anyway. What's a better way to celebrate Thanksgiving Eve than a pumpkin pie (minus the Turkey)? And what's a better place than Tartine to buy pie?
Although the pumpkin pie wasn't that great, it was better than good. The apple pie however, was borderline great (with the help of a huge scoop of vanilla bean ice cream)
What impressed me the most about the place wasits bread. Yes, the freshly baked whole wheat bread. (Confession: I lurrveeeee bread. I can eat bread and I do eat bread every day) The bread just have the right texture and taste, that it is palatable enough on its own. Thank you Tartine for supplying one of life's greatest pleasure!!! -

Thank you Yelp reviewers for steering me towards Tartine. I knew I was going to be in the area before heading to a friend's for dinner so I thought I'd try one of their pies for dessert.
The website has a list of their breads and pies and I order their apple pie with a crumble topping a day in advance. They also have some frozen pies and freshly made pies on the premises and full pies, but you might not get the flavour of your choice.
There is a small seating area if you want to go there for tea/coffee and a sweat treat- their cookies, tarts, and breads look pretty good as well.
MMMMmmm..not too sweet apple pie filling in a thin pie crust with crunchy buttery crumble...yum! Served warm with ice cream...I was a happy camper. -

I used to live a few blocks down the street, and Tartine's became a Saturday and Sunday kind of a routine.
I have a friend who asked, "Have you tried their sandwches?" and I thought, bah, a sandwich is a sandwich. I was wrong. The multigrain bread is the best bread that I've ever had, with a crispy crust that forces you to do some work to eat each bite.
Also a big hit are the "Everything Muffins" filled with a bunch of good stuff? Best muffins I've had. Chili is really good, and you get a piece or two of whatever bread you like. They have great quiche, and some interesting specials there.
We've grabbed their homemade pies a few times, and been blown away. These are not your $5.95 Safeway specials, but fabulous tasting, packed with great ingredients and great preparation and cooking - and when you see the racks of 100s of Pumpkin pies waiting to be picked up on Thanksgiving, for example, you KNOW that this is a great idea! I especially love the rhubarb and strawberry pies.
Whatever you get, expect to pay about 20% more than you'd expect - and to get 50-100% better taste, texture, value! They have real ingredients, and real people putting it all together!
Whenever I'm back down near Sunset beach, I always stop back into Tartine and grab a fabulous Turkey and Cranberry mayo multi-grain bread sandwich, at the very least.
NOW, I get what the big deal is about French bakeries, delis, cooking! This place will take a bit of a hunt to find, but start off directly under the Granville Bridge on Beach Avenue, and come half a block back towards the Burrard Bridge - there, on your left, with a few small tables and chairs outside - you almost missed it!
Well worth a trip from ANYWHERE! -

Oh I miss this place for lunch, my office moved:( The best baked tarts. Their butter tarts are crunchy, crispy, golden, and flakey! I've tried their blueberry tarts and chicken and beef pot pies too! All absolutely delicious! They have the best bread for sandwiches too! Crusty on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside. The staff is really friendly and I honestly haven't tried anything here that I didn't like. It does get really busy at lunch and there is a lack of seating but you can always take it to go and sit outside and enjoy it on the seawall.

Oh, how I love this place- it always smells so good! It's usually bustling in the morning too, so expect to wait in line and grab a table as soon as you see one. There are sandwiches and coffee drinks, but really I love the pastries. For a really rich treat- try the peanut butter and chocolate rice krispy treats. They have some really small tarts that are cute, and a number of great pies. It may be obvious that I love everything here- but what I most like are the lemon bars. They have a small amount of coconut on the top, which I'm not usually a fan of, but I like it on these lemon bars. I've brought them to dinner and events and they are always devoured quickly.
I noticed that they do a lot of catering too. So if you're office is looking
for food, you might advise them to get food from Tartine. Despite this being a crowded place, I think many people don't know about it,
because it sits on Beach, a block south of busy Pacific, right between Burrard and Granville. -

You must try a Go Fish Bun!
They are so spongy, the perfect snack size, and inexpensive. I talked to the owner's husband and son who were super nice guys, I was even given a some information about how the bun is made. I'm not much of a baker but it's great to see how much attention she puts into all her products even these delicious little buns. But once they're gone for the day there aren't any until tomorrow: So go early! -

Good thing I don't live in Vancouver because I would be soooo fat from eating their pies! Tartine knows pies! The apple pie ($3.75/slice) and cherry tart ($1.50 ea.) was sweet and tart and just so friggin delicious! I love baked goods.

You know that buttery smell that you catch when you're walking by a REALLY good bakery, that makes it's own pastries in house? Well, Tartine actually lured me away from the ATM at the fast mart next door, where we were getting Canadian money, and all the way to it's pastry case. Everything looked amazing, from pies that would serve an army to mini tartlets. I regretted not getting anything the entire aqua bus ride over to Granville Island, and even with a full belly from the Market still was craving something to try from this spot when I returned. If you're in the area, this is the spot to be for a pastry you'll not soon forget.
