$1.75 street tacos, with all the other cuts of meat: suadero, buche, tripitas, lengua, cabeza, etc.

You specify the meat and the lady heats up your tortillas. The toppings are DIY in front of the indoor cart.

I went overboard and had 6 tacos of the selections above plus an al pastor. Everything was tasty and well seasoned. Will be back for sure.

Surprisingly not too busy on Cinco De Mayo.

$1.75 tacos is where it's at from the little stand at the front. Service is really fast and I like that you add the cilantro, onions, lime, and salsas yourself. I went with my usual choice of meats: al pastor and carnitas. Both were really well seasoned, but for some reason the carnitas just came from a little metal bucket on the side of grill rather than fresh off the grill like the other meats, so it wasn't as piping hot.  I also tried the buche, which a friend suggested, and even though it wasn't exactly my cup of tea, it was still very tender with a nice chewy texture.

Overall solid taqueria, too bad it's not as cheap as the $1.25 Oakland tacos... When you eat 6-7 for dinner, the difference adds up over time.

Immediately upon entrance, overpoweringly aromatic waves of charbroiled meat emanating from the grill directly to the right begin remorselessly beating down on your nostrils.  Before halfway reaching the register to consider menu options, you powerlessly return and dutifully join the line for the taco cart, anxiously awaiting your turn.

Only the meat you select is placed on the twin-layered tortillas, giving you free rein to heap on cilantro, onions, lime, radishes, and salsa.  The lengua suffers from being imprisoned too long on the grill - most likely to retain its warmth, and lacks the juiciness typical of the meat.  However, the flavoring holds strong and is enhanced by the fresh-off-the-grill taste.  Although the tortillas are heated on the grill as well, the outer layer remains limp - you can probably ask for them to be left on the grill longer.

$1.75 for a taco is on the pricier end, but with Taqueria Vallarta's ample seating, limitless toppings, and well-stocked napkins, the taco cart is ultimately satisfying.

Whenever we have a serious craving for tacos, we make a trip here.  It's the street style that we really enjoy...and the price is still ridiculously low at $1.75 each.

Today we had the tripe, lengua and buche - the buche turned out to be our favorite as it was super tender.  Lengua was good and the tripe was just a bit dry...but an easy fix with some topping and hot sauce.

We also had a super burrito with carnitas at $5.95.  It was not bad - it was with whole beans, we really like refried beans in our burrito.  We didn't find any hot salsa and only very little avocado.

The horchata is still tasty.  The bottled coke is always a good choice and I noticed they have the old style bottled Fanta orange soda!  I will have to try next time.

Best taqueria in the mission for sure. The short chubby guy that works the taco cart a lot is funny. He doesn't give a sh@t about you.

They have really junky Chilaquiles that are excellent too, get them with the green sauce. It's great on Sunday morning when everyone else is waiting for ten years to eat at Bugaloo's.

I was in there last week. I came for the sesos. I mean, I picked that place over  alluhhhh the other taquerias in the area.

The guy said that they hadn't served sesos for over a year and a half. :(

I've never tried cow brain. I might be obsessed a little. :|

I ordered 3 cabeza tacos instead. I ate two and bagged (for next-day-eats) the last one. I've never had a bad experience with cabeza, anywhere, so a 'star' is not warranted here for good meat.

I would've given 5 stars if the red salsa wasn't so salty. Like r-e-a-l-l-y salty. The green sauce was lovely and you certainly can't beat the price of $1.75/taco.

However, I'd a rather pay a bit more for killer condiments.

I'm giving the spot 3.8 stars because they offer whole wheat tortillas. My Kid got a super carne asada burrito and he was very happy with it.

I'll be back in San Francisco tomorrow. I wish that I could say that I'll be re-visiting this place but I can't...

I'm still searching for a brain.

Wait, I didn't try the suadero. Maybe, I'll come in for just one taco. :)

Another review might be in the works. ;)

Who doesn't like a little tongue and head action in your mouth?

Ok, you perverts; I'm talking about lengua and cabeza, two of the MOST underrated meats.

Taqueria Vallarta has that AND more...

In the gourmet ghetto part of The Mission, Taqueria Vallarta serves up some of the most authentic and cheap street tacos in town. Upon entering, you will find a taco stand with a sizzling meat wheel that you will make you want to faceplant into it. http://www.yelp.com/bi...

For a mere $1.75, take your pick from over 8 kinds of meats. You can order the *yawn* standard carnitas or carne asada or be adventurous and order pancita (sheep stomach), tripas (beef stomach lining) or buche (pig's esophagus). RAWR!

Tell the taco man, your choice of meat(s) and watch him go into taco ninja action. He dips the tiny corn tortilla disks in water and warms it in the center of the meat wheel. When the slightly wet corn tortilla hits the sizzling meat wheel, it creates a steaming sensation making it soft and pliable. Topped with your choice of meat(s) and then a generous sprinkle of sweet caramelized onions, you are now ready to top your tacos to your liking. Cilantro, diced raw onions, radishes, lime wedges and three salsas; free feel to make it rain to your liking.

    My two go-tos meats:

    *LENGUA TACO
    http://www.yelp.com/bi...
The small chunks of lengua was boiled to a perfect soft tenderness with just enough seasoning to bring out all the beefy goodness. Very solid though my favorite is from La Taqueria and Mexico Tipico.

    *CABEZA TACO
    http://www.yelp.com/bi...
Don't let the word "head" deter you from trying one of the richest beefy meats out there. Just like beef cheeks, the chunks and shreds have a long stewed consistency giving the head a smooth and slightly silky texture.

I bet you never have tongue and head like this before, not together at least. NOOOOO PUN INTENDED.  ;)

    OTHER NOTES
*Closes at 3:30 AM on weekends
    *Ample seating; 10-12 tables

    Say it with me now...

    SwahhhhDehhhRohh!

In the midst of all the super burritos and all of the taquerias the Mission has to offer, I was fortunate enough to find tacos at Taqueria Vallarta. The first time I went I looked at the meat choices and thought to myself "what in the hell is suadero???"

There was a description at the front door that said "tender beef" and while that might usually be a good enough explanation for me, I was still curious.

Wikipedia describes it as a "thin cut of beef from the meat that hangs from the breast bone on a cow." Another website describes it as "the intermediate part between the belly and the leg." Another website simply said it's "hip."

Yo, whatever cut it is... it's damn good! And that's all you need to know.

They got a little taco stand right in front ready to slang out tacos in a hurry. My usual order(s) are suadero, carnitas, pollo asada, barbacoa. I tend to stay away from chicken (at least when I'm trying to enjoy my food) because it can be less tasty as... I don't know... some braised pork butt! but the pollo asada is exceptional here. They also offer every other body part you can think of...

    cabeza (head)
    lengua (beef tongue)
    tripa (beef stomach aka tripe)
    cachete (cheek)
    buche (pork neck)

... as well as your standard taqueria offerings...

    enchiladas
    super burritos
    quesadillas
    tortas
    etc...

But i recommend the tacos. It's the best street taco I've had and at $1.75 a pop, the dollar doesn't get much stronger. Do yourself a favor and hit this place up. If you don't like it then you can punch me in the face... but something tells me you'll want to find me and give me a high five... or a hug, I'll accept either.

    - Good tacos (and they have fish tacos)
    - Cheap & cheerful
    - Good salsas

...not sure what other compliment could serve a taqueria well.

    - Tamales = not too good
    - "Hot" sauce for tacos = not tasty
    - Tortilla chips = very oily

I hear the tacos are good, but this review is mostly for the vegetarian burrito I get pretty much every time I walk in (nothing special, just their plain veggie burrito). It absolutely hits the spot-- nicely flavored, especially with their paler green salsa, and has some avocado tucked in. Vallarta's open really late and really early, so it's great for lunch, dinner, drunken late-night snacking, or early-morning hangovers.

The tamale lady who is usually parked in the other entrance also has delicious vegetarian queso tamales with a chile stuffed inside. I take them home and put some Sriracha on them-- you can't make better Latino-Asian-American fusion. Only the Tamale Lady at Zeitgeist has better veggie tamales, but $5? Compared to $1.50 at Vallarta? There isn't even a contest here.

I am an avid fan of Mexican food and have eaten it all over California. SoCal is known for better Mexican food but only because the people that say that have not had Vallarta. They have fresh ingredients, you can customize your burrito with any tortilla and go all veggies or all meat and everything on the menu is great! I first fell in love with their nachos but then went on to love their super burrito grill. One day
I added shrimp to that super burrito grill (fresh carrots, bell pepper, onions, zucchini grilled up plus beans and rice) and since then I've never gone back. I now call that the Kassandra special and have multiple people try it and love it. Yum!!

The tacos have increased in price to $1.75, but seriously, you still can't beat these prices and delicious meats. The tingly al pastor will never be beaten, but every single item on this menu will bring your heavenly pleasure in your mouth and stomach. They're open late, and the food quality hasn't suffered one bit.

Taco stand didn't look like much, you add your own cilantro, lime, chili, and onions, but OMG they were so good. I tried barbacoa and al pastor, both were bomb. Also I was seduced by the Esquites sold by the tamale lady and ordered them, and although I was overly stuffed after that my craving was satisfied. Also bought a queso tamale and ate it for breakfast the next day at work, it was really good with a  big slice of poblano tucked inside. With the meal I got the pina aguas fresca which was also housemade and really great.

Also, they had cool  SF/Jalisco themed murals and wide open seating area which was nice. I imagine this place is good for pseudo open air seating during summer, but can't speak to that since I was here in Jan.

This place was also very affordable.

Came here on a recommendation from a friend - and I'm glad I followed Nathan C's advice!

Super fast and simple - just pick what kind of meat do you want.  In and out in 3 minutes.  All $1.75 each.  Each corn taco is small - about 3" in diameter, so you could easily have 3-6 for a meal, depending on your appetite. Comes on a paper plate, but I was driving home so the lady covered it in foil for me.

I got 2 carne asada, 2 chicken, 2 pork carnitas (to share with MLP, although I'm so moo I probably couldn't eaten them all myself), and they were all super good. I think my fave was the carnitas. I slathered my taco's with a bit of everything - cilantro, red sauce, green sauce and lime.  DELISH!

Taq Vallarta - I'll be back!

Overall, Taqueria Vallarta is a 3-star joint.  Yes, the tacos are delicious and worthy of 4 stars, but everything else is just mediocre.

Tacos!  Don't waste stomach space on anything else.  We were with a big group, so in addition to tacos, we also got a burrito and a quesadilla.  No bueno.

Line up and order 3-5 tacos.  When your tacos are done, be careful, the plate is HOT!  Then smother your taco with as much of the 3-4 salsas offered.  Then, throw on top as much cilantro and onions as your little heart desires.

Then, go pay and maybe, just maybe get some juice.

This place is a bit of a dive, but they make the best tacos in town. When you factor in value, at $1.75 each, they win hands-down.

They make the tacos on this little cart. The meats are already sizzling on their grill when you get there. So far, all of the meats have been good except for the tripas, although I haven't tried their chicken yet. They dip the tortillas in lard or some other kind of goodness before they warm them. After the guy serves em up, add cilantro, onions, lime and salsa to taste. The green salsa's the best of the three. Also, sometimes the guy gives you grilled onions which are a nice bonus.

In the evenings, a lady sells tamales and corn in the other corner of the store. I tried her corn-on-the-cob last night, and it wasn't bad. She slathers mayo (I think) on it and then sprinkles on queso and paprika. It looked kinda nasty and unhealthy when she was prepping it, but it actually tasted alright. I haven't tried her tamales yet, but both tamales and corn-on-the-cob are $2.

My friend got a burrito here once. I think it was alright. But if you come here, get the tacos. They're the bomb. The cart's right by the entrance, so you can't miss it.

1.75 cabeza tacos late night? this place is legit.

go for the crazy stuff like cabeza or lengua... you seriously don't know what you're missing. You just gotta get over it. The cabeza and lengua are so tender and flavorful... you'd probably forget about carne asada and chicken. They give a ton of meat per taco... though I would say the only thing missing is an option to pay a little more to jazz it up with cheese, avocado, and sour cream (if you're into making it into a mini burrito).

I also got a carne asada burrito mojado, which was OK and caused me to dock it 1 star.

Pro-Tip... read the story on the wall... either drunk or sober... for maximum entertainment. Also... stick with the tacos... everything else is OK, but the tacos are such a great value and are way more delicious than their other foods.

Sorry about that confusion a few minutes ago.  That review update was strictly meant for this beautiful, dive-y, authentic, delicious establishment.
I'll repeat what I said, and stand by it.  BEST STREET TACOS outside of Baja CA.  Thankfully since they reopened, they found a way to keep the friendly pigeons outside, where they belong, and where they can be fed by people who don't understand the reasons behind why we don't feed pigeons.

Back to Tacos.  Can you find me a better taco for under $2?  People have taken me all over the Bay, claiming their favorite place has the "like the best ones evarr."
Nay.  Taqueria Vallarta will shame you, and disrespect your recipe, in a smart and delicious fashion.  I beg you tell me where there are better tacos, in La Mission or not.

To the reader: Keep in mind, this review is based on TACOS alone. (price, quality, execution, flavor, aftertaste and later delicious burp-age are taken into effect when giving out stars.)

So there's a counter here with a big-ass backlit menu where you can order the big flautas plates, combos and quesadillas... or you can step to your right and get a street taco by the door for $1.75.  A man stands behind a grill with tons of cuts of meat and piles of tortillas.  You can ask for grilled onions from the grill (though you may have to ask twice), and there are salsas and other condiments  such as limes, radishes, raw onions, cilantro you can use to top the taco yourself.  Delicious, authentic cuts of meat like lengua, cabeza, buche, suadero... definitely go for the cheap street taco on a paper plate!

Greasiest breakfast burrito I've ever seen.  Fat and cooking oil was so thick that it seeped through the tortilla and the tortilla would fall apart whenever I unwrapped a bit more from the foil (and I didn't unwrap more than a little foil at a time since too much grease would drip otherwise).

Loud tejano music blasting the place at 11am on a Tuesday.  I would have left to avoid the ear-splitting oompahs, but the burrito was falling apart.

The neighborhood has many options in the same style, but with better execution.

    Best tacos!

Best taco bar I have ever had. I came with my girlfriend and ordered a wet carnitas burrito and a carne asada burrito with my tacos. They were cheap which made me quite happy.

I ate the tacos while I waited for the burritos to be made and they blew my mind. So freakin good. I don't know if the burritos were good because my mind was so blown by the tacos... just kidding! The wet burrito was good but I am not that big of a fan of red sauce so I probably should have just gone for a normal burrito. The carne asada was ridiculously good.

If you're just going to have meat tacos, order them from the cart thing just inside the door since that's where they'll direct you anyway. Self serve chopped onion, cilantro, and lime make it easy to customize how you want yo' tacos -- carne asada gets you some grilled onions, YUM.

I come here for the super-cheap tacos. (Who doesn't?) In addition to the usual suspects like carne asada and al pastor, they have tripe, head (cabeza), and tongue (lengua). The cabeza and lengua can be a little fatty, but the flavor is good so give them a try. I don't think I've ever had a taco here I didn't like. It isn't vegetarian friendly, however. The horchata is decent, but I've had better. Enjoy the murals.

Taqueria Vallarta is the closest I've come to finding something comparable to the amazing $1 tacos you get in the shadiest/best taquerias in Mexico (best taco I've had was in Cozumel) and this place brought me back! Came here for drunchies and was so pleasantly surprised at the taco bar! They grill all the different meats in a legit sizzling stone wheel and as soon as you place a taco order they toast up your tortillas too. Love the freshly chopped onions and cilantro you can pile on top, and their cilantro salsa is delicious. Lime wedges and radishes make the whole thing complete.

Was on a mission to go to Mission to get my grub on. I was thinking something fancy but hey, the smell of tacos and horchata lured me into this charming little taqueria!

The place is fairly clean but come on. Maybe it's just me but the messier the place, the better the tacos. Sure I don't want to see little critters running around all over the place but seriously, what do you expect from HOLE IN THE WALL restaurants? If tacos were served at fancy restaurants, I'd seriously question the taste of em.

Anyway, the two of us had a FEAST for less than $15. I'm talking about tacos galore, horchatas, and chips with salsa! Heaven. In. My. Mouth.

I ordered al pastor and carne asada and I'll tell ya ... the meat was SO tender, I swear I could swim through them. Heck, I wanted to just take a bath in them.

I know I'm not painting a very attractive, appetizing picture so I'll stop it right there. But I'm telling you... with all of these reviews, I'm not hyping anything up. Cute neighborhood, fantastic tacos, cool bars around the area for some BEER'IN (yes its a verb!) -- why WOULDN'T you make the trip to visit this shop?

Next time I go up north, I am getting some tacos here ASAP. And you know what? That's saying a lot because I'm taco-spoiled down here in LA. So do with that what you will! ;)

$1.75 tacos right inside by the door! My favorites are the Lugera (Beef Tongue) and Suadero (Tender Beef)! The price is cheap and the food is amazing! They have ample amount of add-ons like cilantro, onions, and many different kinds of salsa.

There is plenty of seating space, but the place does get crowded! Located in the Mission district. Not too far from BART or SFGH!

They were closed for a bit for cough cough involuntary renovation, but they're back...Tacos are now a whopping $1.75.

Where do you eat lunch on Christmas Day after visiting a friend recuperating from an accident at SF General?  Taqueria Vallarta!  We headed down 24th Street just hoping to find something open, and there it was.  We knew nothing about the place, but hospital visits always make me ravenous, so we stopped.  Two carne asada dinner plates and two cane-sugar Cokes later, we were very satisfied.  The beef was dry, like thin jerky, but with a nice tang and topped with full-sized grilled green onions.  The rice and beans mixed very nicely with the bit of salad topped with sour cream.  Add chips, tortillas, friendly service and exit happy.  Feliz Navidad!

Call me a heathen! I've found a place I prefer over Taqueria Cancun and El Farolito. I only wish it wasn't so far from me. Seeing how I live half a block away from Cancun, it's hard to get away.

When you get to the taco stand, the meats are all bubbling and crisping away on a traditional comal (round griddle). You get em dirty: tortillas, meat, and some grilled onions. They are on a thin paper plate. Be careful because you can burn yourself! You can also help yourself to as much onions/cilantro, salsa (3 types), and radishes as you like.

I had the suadero, lengua, and buche. They were all extremely delicious and flavorful without being dry. I need to go back and have a burrito to confirm my suspicions that this is my choice for best burrito in Mission, but I'll report back soon.

For now, best tacos in the Mission for me!

Trying to find the name of this specific taqueria in Mission (I just walked in with a group of friends and didn't remember the name) was like trying to find a specific hipster in Dolores Park-- they all look alike, sound alike, and are a little rundown.

But I finally found it!! And it was worth it!! I usually find most taquerias to be too similar to determine which is better than the other (in other words, I'm usually drunk and can't tell the difference) . However, this place serves some of THE BEST tacos. Their other items don't seem that great, but their tacos pack a lot of punch. I recommend the carne asada and carnitas. The carnitas tacos have the perfect texture-- crispy on the outside, soft and tender on the inside. Make sure you ask for the grilled red onions!!! It's also a pleasant treat that the tacos are served with tortilla chips as well as access to the all-you-can-eat salsa bar (don't get too excited; there are only like four types of salsa). Top it all off with a horchata or cantaloupe agua fresca, and you've got yourself an authentic Mexican meal that doesn't break the bank and is actually worth the calories!

Tacos for carnivores. Slabs for vegetarians.

To your right as you walk in is a taco stand. The guy is simultaneously grilling six, seven maybe eight meats at once. Incredible. I was on a burrito mission, so I passed, but I'm coming back.

Also incredible. The extensive veggie burrito selection. Not one, two or even three varieties. Try six. Each with an assortment of onions, peppers, squash, spinach, cauliflower, tomatoes and plenty of others.

Mine featured pretty much everything above. Wheat tortilla. Black beans. Very impressed and quite a slab for $6.

Also impressed with how much better this location is than the one in the Excelsior: http://www.yelp.com/bi...

Wouldn't be surprised if they had different owners.

Will never return to the one in the Excelsior. Will out of my way to return to the one in the Mission for tacos.

The idea of having a taco bar by the front door is refreshing. Cheap, good and efficient.

Best Tacos in the city hands down! Vegetarians, hipsters, and pretentious white people STAY AWAY!! Go to your stupid, overpriced, white washed , non-authentic Mexicali spot. That is were you belong and everyone else that truly loves a real authentic Mexican taco spot this is where U belong! The rotating wheel of death and carnage is serving it up till 3 AM!
