I stumbled upon Tapas & Pitas, Healthy Eating Cafe when I went to the library the other day. What drew me in was a sign for fresh fruit smoothies, which is such a rarity today.

What a delightful surprise! Thanks John and Lily (the owners) for such a great experience.

I ate the baked falafal pita wrap and was served a complimentary Cesar salad for $6.95. The portion was so generous, I almost couldn't finish it. And the ingredients were fresh and delicious.

I noticed they had breakfast for $1.99, who could beat that price!

And they had cheesecake for dessert.....I told them I would be back for that for sure!

Was wandering through the neighbourhood to grab a quick meal - passed by the usual Western, Chinese, Vietnamese, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Mexican and Burmese joints.  All of a sudden got the craving for Middle Eastern as I came upon this joint.

This place used to be 'Fresh Bean' and 'The Grind' before that - both coffeeshops that I used to frequent.  But to be honest, I avoided this place under new ownership because of the signage on this place, "Tapas & Pitas Cafe / Healthy Eating".... "Healthy Eating"... "HEALTHY Eating"?!?  If food happens to be healthy - I have nothing against that.  But to use 'healthy', 'organic', 'natural', etc. as the main selling point?  Might as well call your joint: "Tapas & Pitas: A Great Personality".

And you now know how I keep my svelte, heroin-chic figure.  Hell, I can be your Chinese Kate Moss tonight.

Anyways, the Middle East craving was overwhelming so I bit the bullet.  I was welcomed in by the really nice couple that owns and runs this place.  Like the coffeeshops of old, there were some squatters on their laptops.

The lady recommended a couple of the meal options for me and said that pita wrap/rice combo should be a "good meal" (in a sincere, matriarchal way) for $6.95 (extra $2 for the large pita).  Option of meat (i.e. chicken, lamb, beef, meatball, etc) and it comes with a Caesar salad - which had really good croutons.  Went with the lamb pita - it was a decent portion - the lamb was a wee bit dry but was packed full of fresh veggies and a good amount of tzatziki.  It wasn't bad at all.  I liked it.

It's cafeteria style - order at the til and they'll bring it out to you.  The lady insisted I pay after I finish eating and they were extremely warm and nice.

Wanted to round them up 4-stars just because of how nice they are - but I don't need to do them any favours.  Solid food, inexpensive and a good addition to the neighbourhood.  And yes... a great personality.

    * West coast style pitas *

This little cafe/pita shop has some very West Coast style pita wraps.  I ordered the gyro pita and it came with a side of Caesar salad as well.

The salad was a bit overdressed for my liking so that it was a little soggy.   The croutons were nice and crispy and well seasoned.  Photo:  http://www.yelp.ca/biz...

The gyro itself had been slightly overcooked so that it was dried out.  The fillings had a bit of a West Coast feel as opposed to a typical gyro feel to them with a larger percentage and variety of fresh veggies.   The pita also tasted like a whole wheat pita (without requesting that).  So a bit of a healthy West Coast vibe to the whole thing.   The thing that I didn't like about it though was the excessive amount of "tsatziki."  I put quotes around it because it didn't have typical tsatziki flavours.  It instead tasted almost like mayo.  It was a disappointing addition to the gyro - but did moisten up the slightly dry gyro.  Overall I would say this was ok, but I certainly wouldn't rush back.  Photo:  http://www.yelp.ca/biz...

This place was a very nice surprise! My husband and I both had the lamb souvlaki plate with rice and a salad - only $6.95! Well worth the price. The lamb is moist and has a wonderful complexity of flavor. They know what they're doing here.

It was quick, the place was clean, and the owner and his wife were extremely nice.

Oh, and the coffee is the best we've had in the western hemisphere. Both my husband and I are serious coffee drinkers, and this man knows how to pull a shot - the richest crema I've ever had on my cup.

Nice owners and yummy chicken pita with reasonable prices. I had the special which was a chicken pita and ceasar salad. Great croutons!

The chicken pita had a toasted pita,  tziki sauce and chicken (grilled warm on one of those panini press things) tomatoes, cucumbers, onions (they asked if I was ok with them) olives and roasted red bell peppers. Mmm! I don't remember if there was anything else as I was pretty excited by the red bell pepper.

It is clean and brite and I'm looking forward to coming here again.

    Oh and free wifi.

This place just opened three weeks ago and is very nice.  The solarium is a very relaxing area to eat your tapa, especially when it is sunny as the building has lots of shade.  They do pitas and tapas platter with daily specials and the chicken here is out of this world.  It's very moist and flavorful.   Most dishes here are under $10 with their specials going from around $6.  They have a fountain in the solar room and it's quite a serene place to have a bite to eat.

The owners, a lovely older Egyptian man and his wife, are incredibly hospitable, in a very Middle Eastern fashion. (He used to teach hospitality at BCIT.) I had the prawn pita - a mere $6.95 for a generously sized pita with freshly cooked, large prawns, plus a nice green salad that even included almonds and cranberries. After lunch, Lily (his wife) brought around fresh grapes, compliments of the house. They were thrilled when I mentioned I would write a positive review for Yelp (which they had never heard of). The location of this restaurant has seen many restaurants and owners come and go - please help this one succeed! They totally deserve it!
