My review isn't changing that much--but I want to update it now that I (and the Yelp mobile app) consider myself a regular.
Tanners is great with its free wifi, parking in the back and good coffee, but a really nice place to go and read. I like to walk, or ride my bike there--it's only four blocks away, with a book or a magazine on a nice day and read outside with some coffee.
Recent weather has turned me on to iced coffee--and not that I think it's all that difficult to mess us a cup of ice coffee--Tanners makes quite an good cup.
Tanners doesn't have the biggest menu, but I often feel the need to add a croissant or bagel sandwich to my order.
Now my FAVORITE thing about Tanners is the crossword puzzle they put out everyday....ok that may have made it sound like the owners of Tanners put out their own special crossword puzzle--instead of the one they cut out of the newspaper everyday, but still its great. My friend and I spend the first 20 minutes of our Tanners visits trying to solve the crossword puzzle in its entirety--while in reality only getting a few answers--whatever! You've got to start somewhere.
Go to tanners, you'll like it, I promise (not really, but you should like it).1 Previous Review: Show all »

service was horrible. the barista who took my order was on the phone when i came to the register and put his friend on hold before taking my order. he made it seem like i was inconveniencing him with his snappy answers and off-putting demeanor. oh, i'm sorry, did my order get in the way of your phone call?
it was my first time visit and probably my last. the late night hours lured me, what can i say. -

I love this place at 7am when I am waiting for the mechanics down the street to fix my car. The earl grey tea is amazing.
Also, I love that I can sit in the comfy couch in my hoodie and beanie, curl up with a book, or set up my laptop to watch Portlandia while chatting with whomever is awake at this ungodly hour.
Also: free wifi! -

This place is just a perfect getaway from studying in Westwood. It is unassuming and non-pretentious.
Love:
plenty of parking spaces, whether in the lot or on the street
free and fast wifi
friendly staff
delicious tea
high chair to make me focus and concentrate
used books throughout the cafe
nice fellow patrons that don't engage in unnecessarily loud conversations
clean bathroom
The only negative aspect is that it can get very warm inside because the sun shines directly on the store. Otherwise, a completely perfect study space.Listed in: Coffee shop and study space

A great place to study when you are trying to get out of Westwood.
Had a perfect hazelnut latte. Typical coffeehouse prices. Pretty laid back with some cute artsy decor. Friendly staff. A variety of drinks and a few food options. Plenty of seating and outlets, but the tables are small so you're better off coming by yourself or with one other person. Free wifi and ample street parking in the neighborhoods. Gets busy during the early afternoon and empties out again around 3 or 4pm. Lots of patio seating to enjoy the sun. Beware, it does get pretty warm inside. They do have ceiling fans, but they're a little obnoxious when you're directly under them. -

They have the most incredible teas!!! I'm totally addicted. I try to get in there before they close for my favorite ... Mandarin/Cinnamon tea steeped in hot apple juice. So awesome. the people that work there are super friendly. When I pull into the lot in the back, they automatically start making my drink LOVE THEM!!!

Just the Little Things that stood out:
Caramel mocha is a super sweet way to start your day.
Almond croissant is terrific after heating.
Putting a stack of books right next to the bathroom seems like a bad idea. What if someone really gets into one while on the can and forgets to come out?
Large variety of sitting areas by the windows or around the shop.
Cool bulletin board for putting up your fancy business cards.
Definitely seems like a nice stop in Culver City to kick it/hang out/meet up when you're in need of a coffee infused environment. -

Unlike the coffee from more ubiquitous franchises, Tanner's coffee is actually very, VERY good. The baristas were lovely and the atmosphere charming. It has the feeling of a local speakeasy, serving top quality coffee while remaining the neighborhood's best poorly-kept secret.

Review from Hugo C.
Tanner's could very well be renamed to "The Ed Little Waiting Area." There's always a java-suck or two that's waiting for their car to be serviced at the neighboring car shop.
The coffee has never been extraordinary, but always good enough to warrant a steady line of regulars that line up for their morning fix. Partner that up with the usual availability of seating and power outlets and you have yourself a merry little work spot.
The only unsettling part of it all is that I typically find my laptop brethren to be nicer than the busy espresso slingers. -

Drove past here the other day on the way to our hotel and noticed the folks sitting outside, and made a mental note to get here in the morning to get some accounting reading done.
I tried to find parking in the lot, but it was full so I parked on the side street, the cafe was pretty full so I found myself seated at the "bar" until a table opened up. The atmosphere is good, a little loud, and the cappuccino was $3.58 for a single in a glass mug. -

This place's menu reminds me a lot of It's A Grind...
Orange Creamsicle is always a win! Hazelnut soy latte was lacking in hazel-nutty flavor but wasn't too sweet which is always appreciated with lattes. The apple bar was pretty good, but I didn't know it would be cold. Probably should have asked before I bought it lol.
Place was packed, no smoking on the patio, free wi-fi for two hours. -
Review from Nelson F.
Friendly neighborhood chain coffee house in Culver City. Larger than the one in Santa Monica. Free wifi so usually full of customers with laptops, probably writers and students mostly. People come here to play chess also. Baristas are very friendly and nice, nice selection of books available to grab off the shelf too. I've seen people come here in the morning bringing their desktop computer and monitor, I suspect because of the free wifi. Hahaha. Nice relaxed atmosphere here.

Tanner's holds it down with good coffee, helpful staff and good wifi for all of us work from home folks and students.
They make great espresso drinks. They make a very, very dry cappuccino whenever I ask for it. Really, this is the most important thing to me in any coffee shop, so I appreciate that the staff listens. They make it with lots of foam, hardly any milk and strong espresso, just how I like it. -

Very cute! I like Tanner's for their laidback attitude, yummy coffee, free wifi and decent parking! Tenner's is one of my go to spots when I want to avoid the traffic of death that is the 405. It's smooth sailing usually just until culver blvd!
My last time here I was undecided about what to get. I asked for a recommendation - I told her I want flavor but I don't want it be sweet. She made this amazing hazelnut mocha. Just the right amount of sweetness and bold flavor! I was very excited to get something impromptu off the menu! -
Review from Ed L.
It's like sitting in your cool hippy aunt's living room, and drinking coffee with a bunch of her random neighborhood friends. My first visit to Tanner's and I'm sitting at the bar eating a delicious onion bagel with cream cheese and tomato, sipping good coffee, and really enjoying the laid back vibe. I look at the bulletin board and I see several cards for healing light practioners next to cards for bookkeepers, professional storytellers, plumbers, and cover bands. The bar overlooks some outdoor seating and this older dude with a stache and mullet who stepped out of the 70s sits with an emo guy and they start playing chess. What is this place?! There's neighborhood art featured on the walls, none of the furniture matches, part of the menu is hanging off surfboards on the wall, but I feel at home. Did they drop some lsd in my coffee?
If I lived in this neighborhood, I'd be here more. -

SAFETY DANCE!!! is what is going through my head right now bc that's what is playing here. I love the 80's rock/pop that mellowly plays in the background here. Not too loud to be distracting but just enough to snap you out of your daze when you need a little music pick me up.
The other reason I enjoy this place, besides the music, is the atmosphere and decor which is a bit eclectic/artsy. With free wifi, current magazines, and couches, it's a nice place to chill. Which the neighborhood seems to agree as there are many ppl studying, reading news papers, and meeting up with friends here. I can see how that may mean noisey but so far everyone is being considerate and it is not that bad. (wait... 8pm... loud)
Also the coffee is not that bad with reasonable prices. There are food options; however, I have never had any.
The only problems I found are...
1. parking is a bit difficult with limited parking in the back and meters in the front.
2. seating (which actually may be a positive to others). It is nice that they have options with couches, stools, high tables, low tables, but the organization in this small space is a tad weird. The weirdest being a heavy wooden table in the middle of the cafe with low wooden stools. If you are like me and like to find a little nook, that may be difficult. My favorite spot though are the two nice armchairs in the corner right next to an outlet.. (mine). It's like sitting on a throne surveying everyone. -
Review from Nick S.
This place has quickly become my favorite coffee shop in Culver City. They have their own parking lot, which, though usually full, generally has at least one spot left for me. The crowd looks like a combination of self-employed people, students and Charles Bukowski impersonators. The internet works, the bathroom is large and clean, and they have a variety of drinks and snacks. There are several types of desserts, including cheesecakes, baked goods, etc., and they make a special chocolate & coffee drink that is tasty (I forget the name). Usually, there are lots of places to sit and the crowd is mostly friendly. Also, even if the lot is full there is no shortage of street parking.
All in all, a good place to hang out, have a cup of joe and play around on your computer.Listed in: Culver City GET DOWN

Went to Tanner's last night to meetup with some friends. This was my first time going to Tanner's and I think my expectations were too high from reading some of the reviews on Yelp. I think I made it out to be much better thus making my experience just OK.
The one barista working was pretty nice and recommended some tea. I normally prefer coffee to tea but just wasn't feeling it that night. Anyway, besides our table, everyone else was alone and busily watching videos or working on their laptops.
It wasn't too noisy there and it's a nice, cozy place to get some work done.
I didn't try any of the food but they had some good looking desserts :)
I don't think I'll go out of my way to go back but it's a nice alternative to Sbux. -
Review from Elisha G.
I'd give this place 3.5 stars.
It's definitely a very cute coffee shop - looks like one you'd go to right off the beach. I tried a Dalton's shivering blended vanilla, which was sugarfree. It tastes just like a frapuccino, but way less heavy. It was definitely tasty, and I'd get it again, but it was a little icy.
My friends and I came here to study for finals, and I don't think it's the best place to study. It's kind of small and there aren't really very many tables or chairs, and the ones we did find weren't that great for sitting for long hours. The tables are a little too small, and their chairs are made of metal. They do have some low sitting couches with matching coffee tables, but you will definitely pass out if you try to study in them.
What I like this place is that they have free wifi and a really nice chess board! Yesss, chess board... every coffee shop should have a chess board. :)Listed in: Need to Get Your Study On?

I've driven by here countless times. Literally. And finally I stopped by here early this morning. I was pleasantly surprised! Quick, friendly, and personable service, coupled with coffee and expresso drinks with the same quality as Peet's but a bit cheaper? It can't be beat!
My only beef is the cash only policy, but I guess you sacrifice the ability to use your credit card for cheaper coffee drinks! I will definitely come back here again. :) -
Review from kimmy c.
It was a Sunday so my usual run to conservatory was not an option. Looked for another coffee stop that wasn't your run of the mill coffee bean or starbucks and came across the yelp reviews for this location.
I guess I had higher expectations for my drink so this place barely gets a 3 in my book. Unfortunately I agree with the negative reviews regarding the quality of espresso and drinks. The drink wasn't bad but it was your typical neighborhood coffee shop that didn't specialize in drinks. They merely provide as opposed to specialize. If you're local and you need coffee, it'll do.
Vanilla latte was watery as opposed to creamy, but there was at least an effort toward foam. It just wasn't the deep espresso and milk flavor I was looking for (and so desperately needed this morning).
Cute little get away located on the corner with a sign that needs a massive face lift (drove right by initially). It reminds me of the mom and pop coffee shops near Pacific Beach (P.B.) in San Diego. I probably thought that due to the random decor of surfboards and large "recycled trash" mural (not too much of an eyesore and unique looking if anything).
Just not enough going on with the coffee to make it worth the stop for me.
Service was fabulous though. The guy at the register and the asian woman at the machines were both very very nice.
Might be nice to rewind and catch up with a friend. Not a good study environment cuz there was really only 1/2 tables, bar stools, and a couch area. Music was way too loud for that early in the morning in my opinion.
Probably wouldn't come back but meh.. a few fair stars for it being non-chain and relatively comfortable looking.
2.75~ round to 3 for the service.
Wouldn't really recommend and probably wouldn't come back. No hate tho. Just wanted better coffee. -
Review from Lana T.
3.5 stars, but I rounded up. I liked this place more than I thought I would when I first came in.
The decor is a little chintzy, with surfboards, mosaics, and murals on the walls. It's on the smaller side, but I didn't have a problem finding a seat near an outlet, although some of the outlets were broken. Wifi is stable but a little slow. Tables are small, so that's something to take into consideration if you prefer a lot of desk space.
I tried their Dalton's shivering blended vanilla drink which was delicious even sugar free, nonfat, and no whip! "It's like a frappuccino," the barista told me when I initially asked her about it, but it definitely blew Starbucks out of the water!
Definitely not as nice as some other cafes in Santa Monica or downtown LA, but it's cute, cozy, quiet, and gets the job done. You can stay however long you like even if you don't purchase anything, although obviously you probably should--their coffee is delicious! Pastries didn't look too appetizing so I'd probably go somewhere else for food.
They also have a lot of books and magazines as well as chess sets to play if you so desire. Also, plentiful FREE unlimited neighborhood parking and a free 2 hour private lot in the back. Good place to come for a break and especially to study for long hours! There are better places around, but I'm still glad I found this place. =)Listed in: Confessions of a Cafe Junkie

Wonderfully cozy little spot, a true neighborhood coffee stop if I've ever ever experienced one. The staff is skilled and affable, the space is open and airy, and the whole atmosphere makes for the kind of experience where you sit down for a couple of minutes and find that hours have passed by, and you don't mind at all.
Darn good vanilla chai to boot. -

It's finals week - i was on the hunt for a good cafe spot to study at and Tanner's was a bullseye!
* easy nearby residential parking
* free, no password wifi
* friendly fast service
* plenty of seating
* quiet atmosphere- prefect for studying
* a big menu of drinks
This Tanner's has a great corner location. Found a parking spot within a min and stepped into a cozy, relax cafe setting. Grabbed a seat by the window with a bar seat that was *THE* most comfy chair I've ever sat it. I'm pretty sure that chair permanently has my butt print on it after camping out there for 7 hrs.
Got the white chocolate mocha with soy $4+. yikes. Really delicious, but a bit on the sweet side. Later also tried the Iced black tea and an expresso brownie. The drinks prices are on the steep side. And the brownie ($3.50) was really fudgey but was hard and had a stale smell, definitely sat in the cold display case for too long. No to the desserts.
They have a funky, surfer + hipster theme going on with surf boards the menus and random books in selves. This looks like a tiny space but they surprisingly had a lot of seating in variations of small tables, couches, benches. It's a great place to work, study, read a book or have a *quiet* chat with friends.
I definitely will recommend this place to my classmates and friends.Listed in: Study Havens

Rebuffed by Teaforest which is closed till January 3 2010, Katie B and I parked it at Tanner's today to get some long overdue work done on our laptops. It was bumpin for the whole 4 hours or so that we were working there, but there are plenty of seats and tables and outlets to go around for everyone. The free wifi there is super easy to connect to... no pesky passwords or anything like that.
As for the menu, it's your typical coffee shop fare, but I really loved that they had hot apple cider... perfect for the gloomy cold day outside. I also had an everything bagel with cream cheese, but wished that I had decided to add a tomato on it for 75cents like Katie B did.. I was eyeing it enviously the whole time. They also have an impressive assortment of pastries that they heat up for you so they're nice and fresh.
The decor is super funky and all over the place, just like any good coffee shop should be. I know there are other Tanner's around town, so I was surprised at how independent this one felt, with its random animal print chairs and funky artwork. It added a nice homey touch to the experience.
There's also parking out back for two hours, and the residential area is actually pretty easy for parking if you don't mind walking half a block or so. Overall, a comfortable and convenient little cafe to get some hardcore work done! -

Tanner's is a great spot to hit up some free WiFi with your computer. They have free parking and easy street parking. Located on the corner of Sepulveda Blvd and Lindblade makes coming here very convenient. The coffee shop is filled with books, board games, and interesting artwork on the walls. They've recently upgraded the restroom and outdoor patio area which is great.
The staff always make excellent recommendations for drinks and the snacks are cheap. I love this place. Such a staple in Culver City.Listed in: Spoonfuls of Creamers & Honey!

I'll keep this short and sweet because I'm tired of reading long yelps that are more like yawns.
Pros: abundant street parking, plentiful beverage menu, and electrical outlets galore. Lil game rack where you can borrow games. Nice baño decor and surfing art!
Cons: pretty crowded--one to two seats open on a weekday. -

4.5 stars. I'm rounding up because they've got the sweetest baristas I've ever met (and I'm a coffee shop whore --I get around a lot).
I'll start with my one con:
The food. Meh. Their desserts are just okay. I had a carrot cake slice that was all frosting, little cake. And their sandwiches are also nothing special and take forever to make (but people don't seem to come here for the food).
My many, many pros:
*** Free wifi!
*** Plenty of seating, plenty of outlets (even outside)!
*** 2-hr parking in lot; ample residential street parking for longer stays.
*** Great coffee/tea selection. They whip up a mean dirty chai (I've had both the vanilla and spiced. Both are tasty, albeit a tad on the sweet side). I also recommend their Madagascar Vanilla tea. And their coconut Italian soda!
*** The nicest baristas I've ever met. They seriously hire these people from some kind of Disney movie. All smiles. Even when I'm there all day. Yes, literally all day.
*** Great place to park it and work. Also a great place to chat with friends. Everything from little tables to couches to window seats to outdoor seating.
*** Funky local art on the walls.
I've come here dozens and dozens of times to work here this past year. And the pros have been quite consistent. Enjoy! -

This Tanner's holds a special place in my heart.
My girlfriend and I had our first official date at this location. We have been back several times since then. I have been coming since 1998 and it always nice to walk in and smell that fresh scent of coffee grounds in the air.
The inside is incredible. They still support local artists and display there work on their walls for all to see.
The walls currently are covered in various different surfboards all decorated with some nice art (the boards themselves to me are a work of art).
The coffee, tea, cookies are all good to go. The prices are very reasonable and parking is never an issue. -
Review from Calvin H.
Great little place for studying, reading, or writing Yelp reviews (as I'm doing right now). I've been camped out here for a few hours now working on some papers and it's been fabulous. It's quiet and airy and there's great wifi and readily available outlets. Street parking is plentiful. I prefer the drinks at the Conservatory, which are comparably priced and much yummier, but my dirty chai definitely hit the spot. Cash only, but we should probably try to break off the shackles that hold us to Visa and Mastercard, anyway. There's an ATM in here but it's not working at the moment.

Needed a quick bite. (Random vampires need not apply.) Took a look at the menu, but they don't really have much of a selection other than sweets. There was a bagel with lox & cream cheese, a couple other sandwiches, nothing particularly wonderful. So I left.
Hafta say, though, the place is cool, some nice outside tables and a funky leopard couch inside. -

Listen here,
I am harsh on everyone, but i am worse with people who specialize in something and fail.
their espresso was watery dirt. not good.. not even a little.
the bagel i ordered was called wheat, but white on the inside.booo
the wifi was slow...
on the positive:
Nice people, cozy little environment, and busy... i like going busy places..i couldn't tell you why...well maybe i could ...but i wont..
with green peas(delicious fair trade coffee made right and lighting fast wifi) down the street...it would be tough to go back... -

I've been frequenting Tanners Coffee since 1997. In my Culver High days I was either there or at Taco Bell a few businesses down (not proud of the Taco Bell thing)...
Moving on, I remember everything tasting great before I new what a decent latte tastes like. Now, it's pretty hit or miss but they continue to get my business because it's the only coffee shop on my way to work.
I got a bagel once and never again. The boy who made it, and I say boy because he could not have been older than 17, burned it and gave it to me anyway?
Anywhoo 3 stars because of the music, the location, the seating, and the times that my soy latte was a hit. -

Good coffee, good wifi, easy parking in the neighborhood. It's a cute, local coffee shop that I would probably frequent more if I lived in the neighborhood. The coffee's not as good as Peet's, but better than Coffee Bean. Anything's better than Coffee Bean. It's the go-to spot while you're waiting for your car from Ed Little.

Tanner's is a nice place to hang out with a laptop. The coffee and teas are very good. They have bakery type foods that are gone by the afternoon. They make a "Egg and Cheese" on a bagel (if any bagels are available) or as a wrap, which is my absolute favorite when I am there. Tanner's has sofas, tables, counters, lots of places to plug in for power, and wifi, which is usually pretty good and if it goes out the person working the counter knows how to reset it.
For the internet access, I probably spent an average of 5 hours a day for several weeks at Tanner's. All of the employees are polite and happy to make whatever is on the menu. I have internet access at home now, but if anyone working at tanners reads this: Thanks and I'll still stop in for espresso from time to time!
