Had to post after reading some of the reviews here.
Steak and eggs is pretty good(Bo ne), and if you cant get full of that you might just a black hole, time to enter competition food eating, Tape worm infested... The portion is huge!
The fish soup is amazing, and so is the viet sandwiches. The lady that owns the place is ultra nice, the staff dont speak any English so it's a bit slow in there when there are multiple customers. But that wont stop me from getting the great specialty foods. -

*quick tip*
-chicken curry-not that great
-Bo ne- it's ok
-looks like a clean restaurant, but secretly dirty with baby roaches!
Came in on a Saturday around 11:30.
It was pretty empty and got slammed around 12:15? Place looks clean...however it's not. My table had a baby roach/bug? Crawling on the edge if the table...wiped it down with my napkin. So I bypass that until...the owner brought out a small bowl me to use for one of my meals and what do I see...a smashed baby roach/bug on the outside of the bowl. After reading yelp review before writing this review, seems like they had a roach problem for quite sometime now...straight up disgusting! I don't think I'll ever be back!
On top of that none of the server were wearing gloves when handling the baguettes. If other hole in the wall banh mi joints wear gloves, these ppl should know better.
A friend of mine and I shared the popular dish Aka Bo ne. Make sure to get' Bo ne tan ba Le,' there's a another Bo ne plate that's actually served with rice.
Service: our waiter was kinda slow, not sure if he was a new employee, but the rest of the staff were attentive.
we received our salad, pate/butter spread, & baguette basket. I wished they had waited go serve our baguette when our food came out.
On to the baguette, it was nice light, crispy....but not a fan. It wasn't the kind of breads that got you coming back for me..kinda like a bag of lays potato chips, you can't have just one bite.
90% of the guests that dined in all order Bo ne. I'm sorry what's the hype besides the coolness on a sizzling plate? It was no party in my mouth, I agree they do not serve enough butter/pate...had to ask for more. Salad was ok. Nicely presented.
On to the chicken curry...ughh they went over board on the coconut milk. It was a large portion, even the two of us still barely ate half of it.
For now tan ba Le is off my list. After reading many reviews it seems like they have a big roach infestation. Did I mention the shopping plaza is barely 5 years old? -

Had to try this after seeing the Bo-ne on other friends facebook pictures...
Bo-ne (chunks of sizzling beef and two over easy eggs on a hot plate with a side of salad and baguette. The only complaint I have is the portions are small, but everything else was delicious!
Bun bo hue is also excellent here as well! Top 3 that I have had in Houston.. -

pate and butter with french bread is great. steak is very well cooked but slightly on the lesser seasoned side. overall hits the spot, but isnt really something impossible to make at home. -

Steak and eggs go together like a horse and carriage, says Al Bundy, and they do it right here. For around $12 you get a sizzling platter of beef cubes and 2 runny, yummy, gooey eggs. The trick is to try to sop up all the yolk before it solidifies. The cucumber tomato and lettuce salad has some kind of sweet dressing on it too. Comes with some baguettes and special butter and pate. This would be how I imagine Vietnamese soul food to be. Unfortunately it is so far out of the way for me. Open up one inside the loop!

A while ago, I met up with a really good friend who had recently moved close by. We were talking about food, and she said she had to take me to Tan Ba Le. I distinctly remember her mention steak and eggs, and everything else she said suddenly became muted. I replied: "You had me at steak and eggs" (while doing my best Ron Swanson impression).
The moment of truth finally came during the long Christmas weekend. I got there a few minutes late, and she had already ordered steak and eggs for the entire party. A bit presumptuous, but on hindsight, she knew exactly what she was doing. Before the main course, we were treated to a green salad served with a balsamic vinaigrette dressing. It was good, but it only made me more impatient. I was on a mission to eat steak and eggs, and here I was eating a salad.
I remember having a blast conversing with my friends, and all of a sudden it got quiet. The sound of eggs and beef sizzling on hot skillets had hijacked our conversation. Along with the steak and eggs came the baguettes straight out of the oven... crispy outside and soft inside. The aroma of the three most important food groups (meat, eggs and carbs) blended in perfect harmony, and I found myself salivating like a dog waiting for scraps.
I had never eaten Bo Ne before. Trying not to embarrass myself, I quietly observed what my friend did. She would grab a baguette, cut a slit at the top, and delicately pull out the soft inside of the bread. The inside of the bread served as a perfect dipping platform for the egg yolk. She would then spread the pate and butter inside the bread, and stuffed steak and egg whites inside. I promptly did the same... amazing! The steak was perfectly seasoned. The crispy baguette and the rich flavors of pate and vietnamese butter complements the steak and eggs like nothing else I've tried. As the previous reviewer said, this dish will change your perspective on how steak and eggs should be eaten.
Once again, this was the first time I had Bo Ne, so I'm a little uncomfortable giving it 5 stars without trying it somewhere else. I must say though... If you are tired of the same old breakfast, and if you want to try a new spin on it, you need to come to Tan Ba Le and order the steak and eggs. -

This place is very casual and the staff was extremely nice.
The Bo Ne was amazing. This dish redefines steak and eggs. The side salad and french bread with pate and Viet butter/mayo that come with it were icing on the cake. Loved it. -

I went here to grab a grilled pork and a combination sandwich to test out.The restaurant is clean somewhat nice. Now let's get to the sandwiches, first off the bread does not impress me a bit, not sure if it was just my luck that got a bad one but Gawd ! it was hard as rock literally destroyed my gum. However the ingredients are pretty good, grilled pork is a little dry but quite tasty. Well that's all i have, hopefully they will have better breads next time.

after reading all the reviews on here, my mouth couldnt help but water at the thought of steak and eggs. nothing else sounded better that day, so i headed on over here during my lunch break.
boy o boy, was i amazed. one order of "bo ne" comes with a side salad first, a basket of their baguettes and a side of their fresh mayo and pate. the beef came out a little after the salad and BAM! the sizzle was enough to make me burn my tongue. and i did. :(
after giving the meat a second to sizzle down and the smoke to clear, i grabbed a piece of the baguette and got to work. tore off little sections of bread and clamped some egg and steak in the middle. i was in heaven! the sexiest part was when i got to the egg yolk. stabbed it with my bread and the yolk came pouring out, mixed with the juices of the steak and ohhhh boy that was just indescribable! its definitely a must try if youre in the area! -

The steak & eggs (bo ne) is fantastic, but I liked the baguette with butter and pate just as much. The owners are very friendly and there is a wide selection of other dishes besides the steak & eggs. I would say don't get your expectations up too high for the steak (which are really beef cubes), it's good but it's not going to knock your socks off. I'll give this place 5 stars though because the baguette is amazing and the value ($11 bucks for the steak & eggs that comes with the baguette w/butter & pate, and a salad) can't be beat.

This place deserve five star for their BO NE dish.
I came here to order some banh mi (which is btw, buy 5 get 1 free) on the way to my dad's house. Called my dad when he was on the way home so I decided to dine in and tried the Bo Ne.
The lady at the counter was awesome and extremely sweet...not to mention very attentive. I love the service already! The dish came out on a sizzling plate with pieces of beef and sunny side up eggs. There's two different style to eat it -- rice or bread. I chose the bread because I love the pate and butter combination with the beef and eggs.
My BF had the MI BO KHO. The broth was spicy but perfect spicy. I had a taste of it and it was pretty darn good. I still prefer the bo ne, though. The lady wasn't lying when she said both dish was good. I'll try everything else sooner or later...she actually recommends all.
It was freaking delicious!!! Glad I had a chance to experience the bo ne. Tomorrow I am going to get me some Bo Ne. -

A Vietnamese take on a classic favorite dish, steak & eggs. This place hits the spot -- morning, lunch, or dinner! Located on the corner of Beechnut and Boone in Alief sits a tiny store dishing out simple, yet delicious food. The steak is cooked and seasoned nicely and the fresh scallions on top add a great kick to the dish. Next to the savory meat is 2 sunny side-up eggs which are simply seasoned with salt and pepper, a great compliment to the dish. Finally, one of my favorite parts of the this meal is the fresh French bread which is served with the classic pate and butter. The French bread here is close to, if not perfect. It's flaky on the outside but moist and fluffy in the inside, what more could you ask for.
Eat it any way you like -- whether you make a sandwich with all the ingredients packed together or you eat them individually, the food is great. I'm excited to go back for a Houston visit because it's been awhile since I've been here. -

"I've never seen you so happy about food before," is what my friend said when we visited Tan Ba Le. =) Believe me, I get 'food happy'! :D It was my 2nd ever visit on a 3-day weekend, and I was excited about my next round of their house specialty -- steak and eggs!
The eggs are served sunny-side-up, and the beef is shakin' beef. btw, you won't need any sauce or rice for this shakin' beef version! I loooved their bread and all the flavors that came with the meal.
I topped this meal off with a can of coconut juice and some homemade yogurt to take home for later. This meal is worth the hype, and a must-visit on my list! ;)Listed in: Chinatown Faves

Food = 5 stars. Cockroach on the wall = 1 star.
If you're still reading this...
The steak and eggs is delicious but overpriced. The tender, flavorful beef cubes come on a sizzling hot plate accompanied by two eggs, a basket of hot steamy bread, and a side of amazing butter and pate.
I asked for 'the special' in an attempt to order the steak and eggs but accidentally ended up with a sandwich which was a pleasant surprise; I assume I received 'the special' sandwich. It was perfectly smothered with their delicious pate and comes on fresh bread that is nice and crispy but doesn't crumble everywhere.
There's a fridge full of bottled drinks (Hello, Yeo's Chrysanthemum Tea!) which was good because this didn't look like the kind of place where you want to drink the water. Probably would not return but definitely worth at least trying out.Listed in: Chowdown Chinatown

My friend and I went here after reading favorable Yelp reviews. Overall, it was a good experience.
The service was spotty, since our server didn't seem to be listening when taking our order and then figured after the food was out her job was done and water refills were unnecessary. I'll just assume she was new...?
The cook was especially helpful, however, and reminded us of why we love going to family-owned places like this. My friend has a seafood allergy and when her order came out we had to reorder-- the menu isn't especially detailed and she discovered a shrimp floating in her meal. The reorder was no big deal, and we actually discussed various menu items with the cook before we settled on something new.
The food was tasty and fresh, with well-seasoned meat and refreshing salad, tasty pate and crispy bread.
It was obvious to our hosts we'd discovered this place on Yelp when we ordered the often-reviewed bo ne. It was well worth it. Pork dishes are also a good option.
When we arrived, it was 8:00 and though they were starting to close up they stayed open. Apparently they close early regularly, when certain menu items run out. We felt sort of bad staying since we were the only two there, but they were nice and waited to finish closing up until we were gone-- no small favor considering our reorder. -

I wish I could give this place no stars. Not because I hated it, but because I'm not really sure how to rate this place, given my experience....so I'd rather give them no stars and be neutral.
I wanted to go get some Sunday brunch but didn't feel like driving too far, so I decided to come here. There were no tables available and not because it was jam packed, but because they were all occupied by plates, cups and dirty napkins. It took about 15 minutes for them to bus a table for us. It didn't irk me too much because the people here were still nice (with the exception of one woman behind the counter who did not speak English at all, who, despite that, didn't attempt to smile and nod through a conversation she didn't understand...she just frowned and ignored the other person).
Anyways, ordered their "renowned" bo ne dish, which is steak and eggs ($10). It came out pretty fast. The dish was pretty ok; I'm not sure if it's the best thing I've ever eaten, but I'd definitely eat it again if I found it somewhere else.
The reason I probably won't go back here is because a roach kept climbing on and around the counter behind me. It was 1 or 2 inches away from my back and the minute I saw it, I lost my appetite. It's just disgusting. Most food joints have roaches and I'm fully aware of it and sort of at peace with it....
But it's one thing to be aware of the possibility of roaches in a restaurant's kitchen and another to actually SEE one and be THAT close to it. I'm still feeling the heebie jeebies.
Still, if you just gotta try the bo ne, go here and sit away from the counter. That way, you don't have to actually see the roach that may have potentially crawled all over your food.
P.S. They accept credit cards with a $5 minimum. Happy eating! -

MMMMMMMMMMM! and more MMMMMMMM!
Okay after hearing all the hype and seeing facebook posts and pictures about their steak and eggs, ( I think they call it Holy Cow?) I had to try it. My friends took me here today and I was not disappointed. Even though there aren't many tables and the place looks kind of dingy, the food was good. the sunny side up eggs and beef chunks is served on top of a sizzling hot plate with a basket of baguette and salad on the side. The pate butter with the fresh baguette bread really hit the spot and the salad was fresh and tasty as well. I actually made myself a sandwich with the bread, salad, eggs, pate, and beef chunks. Do yourself a favor and try it out. It's like getting smacked with a flavor pan! -

Why haven't I heard about this place sooner??
So simple yet so good.
STEAK and EGGS, $10
includes french bread w/ pate & butter
Order this when you come here, it is off the chain!! I'll probably eat more things off the menu next time but this totally hit the spot. Especially when you have a hangover. Oh and add ground pepper to the pate/butter. It's most excellent. :)Listed in: Vietnamese Grubbery | Houston

So I visited this place based on the good reviews on Bo Ne and they didn't disappoint. The steak cubes and eggs on a sizzling plate were really good, plus it came with a salad and fresh french baguettes.
The thing that was disappointing was the customer service, price and the dirty area in general. I did witness a cockroach on the floor after I finished eating. So the Bo Ne plate is $10 + tax. China town is known for it's cheap prices and good food.
They have an article from the Houston press by the cash register which says alot about the food it serves. BUT I do not believe I'll be returning to this place. -
Review from Antho N.
Tan Ba Le's specialty is the "Bo Ne" dish where it comes out on a sizzling plate with eggs cooked your way. Then you build your own sandwich which can or should be topped with butter and pork+bate sauce.
I've yet to try anything else for the Bo Ne is too pleasing to resist. The salad that comes before as an appetizer is quite tasty also. -

Bo Ne here is the best in the area. Well I haven't had it anywhere else but so far I been coming here once a week with my kids. They love this place because of the crack butter (I tell em it that cause it addictively good). If you never tried this place...then you missing out on a staple institution ok the best steak and eggs breakfast lunch item. The baguette bread are toasted hot as well as the food. Carefull not to burn you mouth or hand on the hot place and food.

Three words. Steak and eggs! Otherwise known as Bo ne on the menu. It's about 10 bucks n comes with a salad, bread, pate and butter. So delicious, my friend and I think it has crack in it it's so addicting! Service leaves much to be desired but really I've come to expect very little from Asian owned restaurants.

This is such a cute little place owned by a husband and wife. They are very friendly and attentive. Their specialty is the "Bo Ne" where its on a sizzling plate with peices of steak and eggs. It comes with a salad and bread. I like to eat it "banh mi" style by putting the pate and butter on the bread and then putting some salad and then eggs and steak. And on top of that i put a little sriracha hot sauce to finish it off! =] mmm.mmm.. good! It's delicious and this place gets pretty crowded during the weekends. They close early so it's great for lunch! It's definitely a place worth going!

Don't judge this place from the outside. Once you are seated the entree you want order are "steak and eggs" also called "Bo Ne" in Vietnamese. It is served with baguettes, pate/french butter, and oddly salad. I made a sandwich out of my meal which was yummy.
I definitely I want to come back again, again, and again. -

This rating is strictly for the Steak and eggs sizzling platter (call Bo Ne). From the looks of what everyone orders, yep...... this seems to be their signature item.
Bo Ne - essentially Bo Luc Lac with two sunny side up eggs served on a sizzling platter. Served with a side of pate and butter, lettuce and onions, and a basket of toasted baguettes. Sort of a DIY banh mi sandwich, and it is soooooooo good. The service is about as good as you can expect for a little sandwich shop. I would definitely come back again. :) -

The steak was perfectly seasoned to perfection served on a sizzling plate with two sunny side up eggs. Party in my mouth! The only thing I've had here is the Bo Ne and I'm satisfied with ordering that every time. Bo Ne is Bo Luc Lac ("shaking beef" or stir-fried/tossed steak cubes) and sunny-side up eggs served with a side salad, baguette, and a side of butter and pate.
My only complaints:
1. The sizzling skillet the eggs and steak is served on keeps the food so hot it constantly burns my tongue (perhaps I should let it cool).
2. Be more generous with the pate and butter. (I complain about this with all sandwich places - why so stingy!) -

This place is your typical vietnamese restaurant in the way it looks. It actually is pretty big for a baguette place since most of these types of places are to-go.
The ladies that work/own the restaurant are super friendly.
Of course, I got the steak and eggs. One word; Phenomenal! These are the best steak and eggs I've ever ate in my entire life. $10 for shaken beef and 2 sunny side up eggs that coming out on a sizzling plate, a salad with a soy sauce vinaigrette, and baguettes with viet mayo and pate. O IN MY MOUTH! I ate every single sliver of food on my plate.
I was a little disappointed when I first ordered my food because I wanted a pate chaud but they didn't have any. I thought it was weird for a Sunday morning not to have something like that. But they sure did make up for it with the steak and eggs. Seriously, try it if you haven't. -
Review from Felice L.

It was the first time I had Bo Ne but it was so freaking good! Went with my friend and her sister - we all got the Bo Ne. Steak was nicely marinated and cooked perfectly as it was so tender despite being on a sizzling skillet. I actually really liked the salad and the onions weren't overpowering or anything which is an added plus. The dressing was tangy - reminded me of a yuzu type dressing. And of course, the butter and pate spread on top of a nice crispy baguette...yuuumm...
I really liked the food and would totally go again. It's now $10 - I'm just hoping they don't keep upping the price. I'm not so sure my bank account would be able to handle it.
My friend said her friend really likes the pastries here. Apparently, she likes it so much that she actually buys some and drives back to Dallas with them. Hmm...maybe next time... -

After hearing about how good the steak & eggs dish is at this place for some time, I finally had the opportunity to give it a try this past weekend and I couldn't agree more.
The order consists of a side salad topped with a house vinaigrette, baguette/french bread with pate & 'bo' (Vietnamese mayo), and of course the steak which is 'bo luc lac' (shaken beef) with two sunny side eggs. The concept of the steak & eggs being served on a sizzling skillet is brilliant. My food stayed warm as I enjoyed every single bite.
I highly recommend this place, as I will definitely be a returning customer. -

Well, the steak and eggs dish is a stable for my Sunday brunch. Their banh mi is my favorite. The order comes with sunny side up eggs and marinated beef in addicting sauce. A basket on baguette, pate & butter , and salad in some type of vinaigrette dressing. Every time i come here I always order it! But I did noticed that they changed their pricing! AHH! I guess they realized that the Bo Ne is getting more popular so why not make a few more profit.
Bo ne asides, I've tried the Bun Thit Nuong, Mi Quang, and few other dishes. Nothing stellar about it. Their banh minh is freaking delicious. I always order the grilled BBQ pork with EGGS! YUMMY in my tummy!!. If you buy 5 of them, you get a free one. What's not to like about that??
GO HERE FOR THE BO NE. =) -

New Orleans, LA
After seeing so many pictures of their infamous steak and egg dish being advertised on facebook, I FINALLY got my chance to taste this dish for myself this past weekend. Everyone always take pictures of the steak and eggs. What's so special about that right? The surprise for me was the fresh bread with the pate and bo that accompanied the dish. The dish came out sizzling hot with 2 sunny side up eggs and the steak still screaming on the hot plate. My girlfriend made a comment that the eggs looked too runny, which is how I like my eggs anyway, but if you don't like it runny, make sure let the person who takes your order know that.
The steaks was actually seasoned very well and I really enjoyed this dish. People complained about the dish jumping from 6 bucks to 8 bucks and now costing $10, but come on people, we pay almost that much for a fast food combo these days. Definitely a must have when I revisit Houston.
Oh, although absolutely delicious, this dish is NOT a filler. My friend warned me that I would get hungry about an hour after eating my meal and he was right.
So -1 star for that and minus another star b/c they got my friends drink order wrong TWICE! -

After seeing several reviews on Houston Press and Yelp, I finally had the chance to try the Bo Ne here, and all I can say that it's amazing. For $10, you get a baguette with butter and liver pate, 2 over easy eggs, and quite a lot of beef cubes. It's definitely a good choice for a Sunday brunch!

The banh mi is great. You can't go wrong with a grilled meat sandwich here. The meat is grilled to perfection with a good amount of char and the cut isn't too lean to be dry. I don't know if the bread is made on site but it taste fresh, crispy on the outside and light and airy on the inside.
The bo ne is out of this world! Steak and eggs with their loaf of French baguette is something your have to try. The egg's center is perfectly cooked... just runny and slop-able. The beef is tender and cooked right. -

OMG!!! The steak and eggs are fabulous. Two eggs sunny side up with steak on a sizzling plate...so every bite is hot and delightful. I read some of the reviews and thought I have to try this place and was completely satisfied. My husband who is every picky and does not like to experiment with new places but, loved it. I dont believe he said two words while we were eating. I would recommend the steak and eggs.
