I actually don't mind Take 5 at all. The Granville and Hastings location would appear to be a standard business district daytime cafe, but it`s not. It has a nice, large Italian cafe feel, and even serves liquor.

The baked goods and sandwiches are better than you`d expect from a chain cafe. The americano here is quite good. I think it`s a 3-shot medium and they sometimes throw in a 4th shot, which is a nice treat. This cafe is one of the better options within several blocks of here.

Did I mention they even serve liquor?

It seems this place hasn't gotten reviewed since the end of the Canada Line constructions, so time to give it a new spin...

This location has always been very inviting for both casual and formal business, and now that CL construction is done, this location is once again peaceful, cozy, and bustling with activity. Their coffee has always been top-notch (MUCH better than Starbucks), prices have remained reasonable (although food very pricey), and they FINALLY upgraded their Internet equipment, allowing for smooth and fast surfing for those cyber java patrons.

Definitely recommended as a top spot for caffeine and relaxation, and some free high-speed surfing!

I'm just gonna put it out there that Take 5 may want to reconsider changing it's name to We Take Our Sweet Ass Time Making Your Beverages...a little long..but catchy no??

I ordered a medium non-fat latte..simple enough right? I was the only one waiting for my drink...I waited...waited...still waiting...I could be waiting right now while I'm writing this???...I'm not though....FINALLY..10 minutes later..that's right people..10 minutes to make a shot or espresso and add it to some streamed milk...I received my latte..slammed down on the counter slightly spilling down the sides of the cup...

Now..one would really have to wonder what could take so long?? Do they have kittens crush the coffee beans individually with their fluffy little paws?? Do they milk skinny cows in the back for fresh non-fat milk??me thinks not..they are just SLOW...

I generally have this experience at this particular location..but have also had similar problems at the Metrotown location..I think it's time for management to put a little fire under some asses...

I will give them this..they have a great selection of cookies..muffins and super yummy and different sandwiches..which if you ask for grilled..HA..better not come too hungry 'casue it will be a while..

Bonus points for the mosaic tile floor. The colors are neutral, but all the swirly lines draw my eye (when taking a break from people watching). The space is set up with rectangular tables on the dark end of the cafe- but taken over by the laptop crowd (this must be where the plugs are too). So I sat in the circular table section, near the windows. The other circular tables were occupied by various meetings. Setting up deals seems to be the popular thing here. And as I observe it's funny to watch people's posture change. At one table someone is always leaning forward expectantly- but the person keeps changing- like the tension/relaxation moves sporadically around the table.

I would have liked to have sat at the window counter (one of my new favorite things)- but the stools didn't appeal to me. No backs (which isn't always a problem)- but today it wasn't for me. Also- the window view is a bit of a toss up. It looks out to the section of Granville being ripped up for the new Canada Line. I'm excited about the line. It says it will open in 2009. So I hope to get some use out of it. I'm not sure if Canadian agencies actually meet their timelines (unlike the American lazy-procrastinating-World Super Power agencies). We'll see. I'm semi-interested, semi-bored by the underground infrastructures. But I am glad to be a part of big city life- and I have an affection for the skytrain.

Ok, so the drink. I went out on a limb today and got my favorite drink- Chai- but this time I got it hot. It's been like a year since I've had a hot chai. I like them and all, but I love a good iced chai. So the hot chai... it had a decent foam on top- not the velvety stuff I like. When getting a hot chai it's customary for their to be some hot water in there- it brings out the concentrate's flavors or something. This one had more water than I'd like- or rather I wished it had a spicier or creamier taste. Not that it was bad- it was just average. In addition, the finished product is not topped with cinnamon. Not a standard feature- but it should be! Anyway, the condiment bar quickly resolves that issue.

Maybe next time I'll get the iced chai or a hot white chocolate. mmm!

This Take 5 is a reasonable location that lured me in with a sign that said "$2 lattés". Now I'm a girl who likes her "calcium" (yeah, that's what I call my caffeine hits) so I was immediate on-board and my friend required only minimal convincing.

In we trotted and ordered up a pair of lattés and then didn't think before we paid the full price. Huh? What about the $2 part? I'm sure there's some fancy catch, like must be ordered to stay and drunk in 5.6 minutes or something. But I wished I'd asked before I realized it was too late.

But I suppose with the gouging Canada Line construction going on out-front, they are desperate to get folks through the door. If preying upon the caffeine-crazed bring the crowds then Take 5 is prepared to take that step.

On my next visit, I'm vowing to get a $2 latté. In fact, that's all I'll say: "a $2 latté, please". This evil-genius plan can't possibly go wrong...

I'm a fan of the $2 lattes - they have about 30 flavours, with sugar free options. Soy milk is 50 cents... so can't go wrong with that!
