A few months ago I broke down and went back to Takara - it's so convenient, and my sons love gyoza and sushi. I was pleasantly surprised by how much it's improved. I can't speak to the SF roll, since I usually get their chirashi-don, but their fish is consistently fresh and tasty, and their chirashi always has something new and interesting on it. We usually do take out, but the servers are always wonderful with my sons, offering them water and edamame if we have to wait for our order to be ready.
So: Go Takara! I take back my two star review - you're my go-to take out sushi place in our 'hood!1 Previous Review: Show all »

Review from Mabel B.
Almost a year ago, I came to Takara sushi with my boyfriend for dinner.
My first impression about Takara was that the restaurant was very clean and sushi bar like. We were seated immediately next to the window.
Being that it was so long ago, the names of the sushi rolls escape me however I do remember that we were offered edamame and that the portion of the rolls were very small. Taste of the rolls weren't worth remembering either. -

Ordered delivery. Sushi and rolls were mediocre. Delivery was in an hour as promised. Probably wouldn't order from here again.
Dining in might be different? -

Very very small delivery area! Would not deliver to Divisadero / Haight area, all of a 2 minute drive. Great food.. I've eaten there, but unless you're within 3 feet of the restaurant... Go there.

a wonderful Japanese place in the hood! I have been always skeptical about restaurants in the Castro but this place proved me totally wrong.
my friend and I decided to go for Omakase and for 100$ for two, this turned out to be one of the best deals I had ever had.
it was a 8-course tasting menu with all kinds of interesting sea food with great execution from the chef.
this is a must-try! -
Review from Nick B.
This place has no seating, it is overly quiet, and is by far the smallest restaurant I have ever dined in....
But I really couldn't care less because their sushi is absolutely unrealistically DELICIOUS!!
PROS:
1. Love their comp edamame they give you upon seating (they will refuse to give a refill ..bah
2. THEIR VOLCANO ROLL IS THE MOST DELICIOUS THING MY MOUTH HAS EVER TASTED!!!!! From the crispness of the tempura to the juiciness and freshness of the sushi, to the wonderful presentation... SOOOO GOOD
3.their Philly roll is super yummy as well as their avocado roll...
CONS:
1. How can this joint not have HAPPY HOUR!!! Wtf. What a disappointment...
2. Location is very small and cozy and the awkward silence does not help... It's called music and you simply hit the ON button.
But again I really don't care.. This place deserves 5 stars all the way. Thank your VOLCANO roll. Best in town. -

Four-and-a-half wonderful stars. This place is great!!!
I've been here more than a handful of times now, and it has been nothing but wonderfully consistent.
If you are a fan of HAMACHI KAMA, this is your place. I was craving this dish, and it did what I wanted it to do--melted in my mouth with my nice cold beer. I was also very pleased with the rolls we ordered. I love that the fresh fish is the mainstay of the rolls and not some fancy (or un-fancy) sauce or over-abundance of rice. The presentation is beautiful.
Why this place is not packed on a Thursday night, I don't know! The service in the past and tonight has been a bit slow (hence, the half star deduction), but very friendly. Otherwise, everything else is exactly what you would want in a great sushi place. And more.
By the way, a great place to catch up with friends. You can actually hear the person sitting across from you loud and clear. Unlike other sushi places. . (umami sushi). -

Love this place!!! I live about a block away and have walked by many times. For some reason I was hesitant to try it. It can't be that good if it's so convenient, right??? Same premise as if it's too good to be true, it probably is. Wrong!!!
The service is fast and friendly, the sushi is fresh and yummy, the presentation is creative, and the ambiance is cute. I keep seeing the sushi chef put out one gorgeous roll after another and I want to try them all!!! My sake sashimi basically melted in my mouth. I got miso soup with clams, which was tasty, followed by Takara special and salmon skin hand roll. I really liked all of it. Yes, this girl can eat a lot!!! Don't judge, don't judge...I know where the gym is ;-).
While it is still not my favorite sushi place in the City, I must say that I will make this my favorite neighborhood sushi joint. Can't wait to return!!! -

one of the last and few restaurants that i haven't tried around the castro area. definitely, a place to try and get your japanese fix on!
first, the place is so small and pretty intimiate, i should say. nice restroom, may i say? you can always tell a place on what kind of restroom they have. just sayin.
2nd, the food wasn't disappointing, at all! got me (and my girlie friend) some baked mussels---garlic-y and cheesy, tempura udon--comforting!, tokyo breeze--light and breezy sushi, REAL california roll---which had a REAL crab. overall, it was such a comforting dinner on a cold, SF night.
3rd, my girlie friend was happy enough to say that..they were playing authentic japanese pop music. AWESOMENESS!
a worthwhile to visit all over over over.....A G A I N! ^_^ -

Review from Sofia R.
A bunch of friends and I decided to grab dinner here. I chose this place because I walked past it one day while I was looking for a cafe. It looked promising so I kept it bookmarked.
I was not disappointed. The place itself is small in space, but still nice inside. Very traditional Japanese. The workers are friendly and are way too good at refilling our drinks.
I ordered an oyster shooter and the Pumpkin for myself. I was iffy about the Pumpkin because the dish only comes in two pieces....but after eating it, was not disappointed. The pieces are large and are succulent fish wise. The fish if very fresh and tasty! I enjoyed every single bite.
The oyster shooter was good too. I actually took this first. I wasn't really sure what to expect but it's basically a shot of sake, raw oyster, quail egg, and shallots. I've never had sake before but my friends scared me into thinking I'd definitely throw it up. On the contrary, it was quite tasty. I mean, shots aren't meant to be savored, but the aftertaste was actually good.
My friends enjoyed the dishes they got too. One friend got the summer roll which seemed special because it's wrapped with soy instead of nori, but it wasn't that great to me.
By the end of our meal, we decided to order the mochi sampler. $8 for 3 mochis is expensive, but the quality of the ice cream mochi we got was really good. We chose to get green tea, red bean, and mango. They were nice enough to cut it into fours, assuming we were all sharing. Our of all the flavors, I liked mango the best...and I don't typically like mango.
Overall, wonderful sushi joint. I'm pretty picky with sushi and I think I consider this my favorite thus far. -

I really love this place. At first blush, it does not seem to be kid-friendly. But the staff is so very friendly and kind to my almost two year old daughter. Thankfully, she has a varied palate and eats up the wakame salad, sunomono, beef short ribs, soft shell crab and amazingly delicious misoyaki sea bass.
For the adults, the sushi is grade A. I was a little skeptical at first b/c the chef and staff are Chinese and not Japanese, which is always not a good sign for a sushi restaurant. But I was wonderfully surprised at the quality of the sushi. Very very good.
This is my go to restaurant for sushi in the city, and not just b/c we live nearby.
I would highly recommend Takara Sushi. -

San Francisco, CA
I've dined at this restaurant on a number of occasions since it first opened in my neighborhood. I think the entrees (i.e. miso glazed seabass) and sushi are great. Prices are slightly higher than a few other places in the neighborhood but I think the food is better at Takara than the other few in the vicinity. The service is generally pretty good but I remember one occasion when the waitress was a little pushy with us ordering alcohol and was ready to clear the table the instant we finished our food, which seemed to be a bit rushed even though we ordered what I thought to be a lot of food. Anyway, I've been back since that experience and all was ok.

I went here on my last vacation to San Francisco and it was great. My boyfriend and I love sushi and in the past year and a half have been to about 20 sushi places, so when we were planning our first night I tore through multiple reviews trying to find a great restaurant to try.
The fish was very fresh, possibly the freshest sushi I've ever had. Once you develop a taste for sushi you can really tell the difference in the quality of the fish and learn how much that matters. That was the biggest selling point and one of the reasons I'm giving them a 4 star review.
The service was good, but in the tradition of Asian restaurants it was very hands off. They brought what we needed when we flagged them down, although they might have been more attentive if we'd come earlier. We were the last customers to arrive so they were closing down as we ate.
The flavors of the rolls weren't the most creative I've ever had. There could have been more variety and more flavor. That's really what lost them the last star and was the major drawback.
Castro is always a great neighborhood to wander around before and after dinner, very cute and entertaining-as long as you're open-minded.
I'd suggest it, but not worth a trip specifically to Castro if you wouldn't enjoy the area. -

As promised, we continue to enjoy Takara once a week. Usually at home (they deliver on grub http://hub.com) but from time to time, we brave the 3 block walk and dine in. Our original confused service experience was definitely an aberration - we've had nothing but excellent service every time we've been back. They even started carrying tamari (gluten free soy) because we had asked for it a couple of times! Now THAT is excellent client service.

Review from Rachel E.
San Francisco, CA
My sister and I came for dinner around 7:30 on Saturday night. It was empty when we arrived which made us a little nervous, but we decided to give it a shot. The restaurant did get significantly more crowded as it got a little later, but seems like at any time there's no wait for a table.
They brought out edamame and water as soon as we sat down which was nice. Then we had the kamikaze roll, x roll, salmon sashimi, and chicken udon.
The kamikaze roll was very good. I'm a big spicy tuna fan to begin with though! The x roll was also delicious, but I thought the sauce was overwhelming the rest of the roll.
The salmon sashimi was super fresh, it's clear the quality of the fish is really good.
The udon was fantastic too! The broth was amazingly flavorful and the noodles were perfectly cooked. The chicken in it was nothing to write home about. I'll probably try the beef next time. (Seafood is a little too adventurous for me...)
Service was just ok (hence just 4 stars instead of 5). Our waitress came by very quickly after we were seated and asked if we were ready to order. We told her we needed just another minute, but didn't see her for at least 10... Then, midway through our meal we overheard her telling the table next to us about some specials that weren't on the menu. We didn't hear about any specials...
Also, the water guy kept filling my glass. Literally every time I took a sip. It got to the point where it was actually disruptive to the conversation.
I don't mean to end on a negative note because this is a solid sushi place with some inventive rolls, tasty fresh fish, and friendly servers. -

Yummy neighborhood sushi joint 2 blocks away from me, what more could I ask for! I've eaten here about 4x now, and I've enjoyed every meal!
Sashimi is always fresh, and they have a pretty good selection of food options to choose from. Here are some of the items I've had:
- Volcano Roll (5 stars): Eel/mango/tuna/salmon with some crispy flakes. Yum! Doesn't look like a traditional roll, but under all the crispy flakes, you'll find the delicious pieces of sushi, don't worry.
- Summer Roll (3.5 stars): A bit plain, but I like it when I'm trying to go for something simple and lighter since it's wrapped with soy paper and doesn't have any extravagant sauces on it.
- Dinosaur Roll (4 stars): Soft-shell crab goodness! Sometimes the soft shell crab is prepared better than others, but overall a solid roll.
- Spicy Tuna Hand Roll (5 stars): Good tuna with a perfect amount of spiciness.
- Eggplant Special (5 stars): Super delicious combo of scallop/eggplant/shrimp! Spicy miso sauce gives each bite a nice kick.
- Tempura Udon (2 stars): I got this via delivery since I was craving noodles so might not be a right indicator of the actual dish. But it didn't taste like anything special, and I would've liked a better assortment of tempura.
- Salmon sashimi appetizer (4 stars): Very smooth, but I usually let the bf eat all of this since it's his fave type of sashimi.
Additional pluses: I've never had to wait for a seat, and the prices are decent (prob can get out of here paying between $15-20/person). The restaurant provides free edamame beans before your meal (love it because I always feel cheated when places try to sell me a tiny plate of edamame for $5), and the waiters are super attentive in refilling tea. Seriously, I don't think my tea cup has ever gone empty... they definitely have some magic tea radar up in here. -

San Francisco, CA
Had a to-go order with 4 friends that we picked up. Can't say that all of us were impressed. The to-go orders seemed to be lacking food... For as much as we paid, we had hoped we'd get fairly good portions - that wasn't the case.
The california rolls were definitely plan, the chicken katsu only tasted good because of the sauce and the small itsy bitsy salad was meh.
I hope they give a little more thought to to-go orders in the future. -
Review from Kevin J.
Not the best sushi I've ever had in San Francisco but I have to say that Takara held it's own. The servers were friendly considering the drunk messes that stumble in every so often. My friend and I had grabbed a couple drinks before stumbling in ourselves and the waitress treated us amazingly even helping us pick out the best rolls on the menu. The water was flowing and the free edamame helped us get some food in our systems quick.
I recommend a longer dinning experience for anyone next time, but this place dropped the food off quick so we could get in and out. Takara is a nice little gem in the Castro. I'll for sure be back. -

San Francisco, CA
Been here a few times now. Convenient location in the heart of the Castro. Price/quality-wise, you get the same quality as you would get in most other places in SF for the same price (i.e. expect to pay $20+/person). Normally I'm a nigiri kind of guy, but I will say that Takara's volcano roll was amazing. The wait isn't too bad and the wait staff is really nice. Also, if I had to give a tip, check this place out during lunch for their lunch deals! :)

So so...
I enjoyed walking in to this quaint little spot. I'd love to give them a higher rating. But it just wasn't filling enough. Portions are on the smaller side, and prices are on the steeper side. Not an ideal combo.
I ordered a california hand roll and another roll i can't remember the name of. Everything tasted adequate, but our table required a 2nd round of orders too get full. $90 later, we were done.
While I enjoyed everything, it didn't blow me away for how much I had to pay. -
Review from Haley B.
San Francisco, CA
I'd love to give Takara 5 stars, but objectively speaking I feel that rating has to be reserved for some very special sushi. However, this place is fabulous - not least of the reasons being the super-sweet waitress who has been here most of the dozen or so times we've dined here.
The sushi is invariably fresh and the portions are generous. Their prices are reasonable, and their fresh-list is usually populated by good 'ol standbys vs. an overabundance of pricey, esoteric parts of pricey, esoteric fish.
Nigiri size can fluctuate a little, as can the the rolls, depending on the chef. However we have NEVER had a tough, smelly, dry, or otherwise unappetizing piece of fish here.
I can't speak for many of the entree items, but the gyoza are solid and the sunomono cucumber salad is a favorite.
Beyond the food, the staff is genuinely warm and friendly, and will remember you if you come in a second time.
By far the best Sushi in the Castro - don't even think of going to Osaka (waay overpriced, inferior atmosphere), Barracuda (meh) or All Seasons (poor quality, usually lots of high-school kids doing sake bombs in the background) before/instead of here.Listed in: Sushi in Castro [area]

San Francisco, CA
This place's alluring exterior helped it make my list of places I must try. And I finally got to one afternoon, when I went for lunch. And sadly, it will be my last visit to Takara Sushi because it's just not worth a return visit.
My objection is not to their fish, which is the best I've had in the neighborhood. It was fresh and generally delicious. But they are stingy!
Their rolls are cut very small, so that each individual sushi peace is about a centimeter shorter than what is standard. I've noticed lower-end restaurants do this so that they can still give you six pieces, but they save on sunk costs by using less fish. But Takara is not a lower-end place: one roll was $6 and their special rolls were in the $9-$14 range. Their special rolls are also not much larger than a standard roll, so I have a hard time accounting for the price differential.
Finally, this place lost me because I left hungry after spending $35 for lunch. While their fish might be better than their local competitors, they give you so little of it that I'm not sure it's worth the trade off. -

San Francisco, CA
Cute little place with tasteful decor and great service - the waitress is super knowledgeable and kept her wits about her while my lovely, but relentlessly high-maintenance friend asked a thousand questions about the food.
Delicious, fresh sushi and fried dishes - try the breaded mussels!
Only pet peeve: music is loud and BAD, not really conducive to the otherwise laid-back and comfortable atmosphere. Also: beware the water boy. He will fill and fill and refill your glass every chance he gets. Great for the thirsty. Less so for the easily quaffed (and annoyed). -

This is the best sushi I have ever had and I have been eating sushi since I was a kid.
The fish is extremely fresh. I have seen them cutting it right at the bar.
The albacore melts in your mouth. Betty (the cute server) is the sweetest little thing and they are quick on the drink refills. -

we did a mini pre-bday celebration here with another couple and was presently suprised at the food. this place is run by chinese people but the food is good. i want to come back and try more of the nigiri and sashimi.
we had some rolls: crazy, salmon lover, and another one i cant remember the name of. all of them were good! we also ordered hamachi kama which was huge! and also the miso seabass that came with 3 or 4? pieces! it was a lot of food.
i thought service was excellent as they kept coming by to check up and refill our teas and water.
parking in this neighborhood can be difficult though -

EXCELLENT!!
They always remember me when I come in and even my order. I seriously asked them a month later: "what was the roll my friend got who was allergic to dairy?" They remembered! One hand almost creepy, on the other I can't judge them rudely if they are that smart and attentive. Extremely friendly and will almost run to your table to remove your straw wrapper when you set it down. I was at Costco in my "get-me-the-fuck-out-of-this-line-so-I-can-sit-and -enjoy-my-hot-dog-daze when one of the waiters came up to me and said hi and asked me how I was off the clock!! Excellence is excellent and the staff is very humble and its heartwarming. I feel as though this place is ran in such a way that they are proud to be open and running. You have got to see their bathroom sink too its HELLA cool!!!! The tsunami roll is very tasty and the last thing I will say is that this place is not run like a Mc donalds where you are treated like an insignificant number like Osaka Sushi is. -

Takara is the absolute best sushi in San Francisco and probably anywhere. The staff are super friendly and always aim to please. They've only been open 2 months so far and are very eager to strut their stuff in the local restaurant scene.
Quick Tips...
1. They're closed on Tuesdays.
2. Have the Firecracker roll if you dig spicy + sushi.
3. The Volcano roll is also super fantastic.
LOVE this place! -

Based simply on the quality of the fish, this is a 5 star. It really might have been the best sushi I have had outside of Tokyo.
Prices are reasonable. Portions were good. But it is the freshness and butter textures that really make this a worthy destination. -

The spousal unit and I have been searching (and searching) for a new favorite sushi place for a couple years. We've finally found it!
The sushi is great, the prices are great and the service is great. We've been here six times and each time it's been a perfect sushi experience.
The seating is superior. Unlike most San Francisco restaurants, which force you to sit next to your neighbors (and keep your conversation clean), most of the seating has high wall dividers. Yay, privacy! There's also seating in the sushi bar area if you want something more social. There's a big teevee over the chef's head and lots of people come in to get sushi, get blasted on saki and watch whatever game is on.
Remember to wash your hands before you eat - the bathroom has one of the most interesting faucets I've ever seen and it's worth checking out. -

From the second I walked in, everyone was incredibly friendly and helpful. I ordered all vegetarian dishes to go. While I waited they brought me green tea (on the house) and the woman informed me that they can make custom veggie rolls!
Ohitashi: very fresh and flavorful
Cucumber Sunomono: it tasted as good as it looked!
Veggie Tempura Roll wrapped in soy-paper: My new favorite roll!
Everything was packaged very carefully.
This is a great neighborhood spot I will return to over and over again. I am excited to learn they deliver as well. -

If I could give this place a 10, I totally would. My boyfriend and I started going here about 6 months ago and have been going about twice a month ever since. The server and the sushi chef are incredibly nice and helpful and always seem excited to see us and ask how we've been. They always recommend something new and have yet to disappoint us.
Two standout dishes are the Volcano Roll, which is eel with an amazing crunchy panko, and the Albacore Carpaccio is fresh and delicious. And yay they start delivering next month!!! So needless to say I love love love. -

Really great sushi! I have only gotten delivery from here, so my review is solely for the food. Last Saturday night, we were exhausted and craving sushi and scoured Yelp looking for a decent place that would deliver. We stumbled onto Takara and were pleased to see they delivered until 10:30 (though Yelp said they are only open until 9:30! Glad we called!), since we have seen this place before and were curious to try it.
We ordered the following:
Tuna sashimi with fried onions: OMFG, amazing!! The fish was delicious, tender and fresh. It melted in our mouths!
Spicy tuna on crispy rice: I LOVE this stuff. This is one of the things I miss most about getting sushi in LA and was very pleased that, not only does Takara make this, but it makes it well!
Yellowtail and scallion roll: Fresh and delicious! Very simple, but quite good:)
My only gripe is that the portions are small compared to the price. This place is quite pricey (that all came out to $30, and we were not stuffed), but it's good enough that I would love to eat/order from Takara again! -

Takara Sushi prepares the best sushi in the Castro, hand(job)s down! The place is petite, so not recommended for groups over 6, but everything from the welcome, the complimentary edamame, to the unwritten sake menu, and even the misspelled "dessert" header is awesome.
I really enjoy the rolls here - there's most of your typical rolls and a few specialty/proprietary rolls mixed in! I don't find the prices too expensive, but I guess others do? There aren't a lot of special discounts and maybe that's the reason..
Definitely a great casual date spot or sex-in-the-city boys-night-out place!
