San Diego, CA
The street taco kings of San Diego! If there is a restaurant that serves better street tacos than these guys, please let me know as I don't mind being wrong in this case! Until then, this is my taco heaven north of the border!
Depending on your mood, you can eat the standard delicious street tacos: adobada (ridiculous punch of flavor!) and carne asada (they bring their A game with this).
Or if you're feeling adventurous, try out some tacos that you'll never find at a Taco Bell or even at some of your local Berto's: lengua (beef tongue), cabeza (beef head), suadero (beef shoulder), and buche (pig's stomach). I'm not a big fan of either the cabeza or buche (I couldn't get over the texture of the buche), but the lengua and suadero are delicious. I definitely recommend that you at least try one of these adventurous tacos like maybe mixing in a lengua taco in your order with the adobada and carne asada tacos. You never know, you might be the next Andrew Zimmern!
By the way, I have an idea. We need to open up a super street taco joint and combine Tacos El Gordo with TJ Oyster Bar. That way I can get awesome fish, octopus, and marlin tacos with adobada, lengua, and suadero tacos on the same trip. Trust me, this would make a boatload of cash. If this happens, please remember me and give me and my family a VIP eat-free pass for the rest of our lives and we'll call it even! -

What can I say about TEG#3...
This is one of the places you can go to for TJ style tacos w/o having to deal with going 15 miles south to TJ for the real thing. There are other locations but I grew up in National City and its closer, whichever. Every visit I am never disappointed. So here are my findings.
The Good: Most everyone, especially tourists, will want to get the standard issue carne asada and play it safe. Please leave your gastronomical reservations at the door. I go here for the suadero, cabeza and adobada con todo. The suadero is the beef shoulder and I like it b/c the meat can be a little tougher and at times crunchy which kinda reminds me of carnitas. The cabeza is super greasy but really tasty. And YES the meat is from the dome of the cow, get over it. The adobada is in a special corner and rotates on a spit. I really like this because it comes with this special green sauce that I cannot explain. Whatever you get, whether you heed my advice or not, make sure to get the cebollas and chiles. They grill it for you.
The set up: The restaurant is broken into two areas, where the meat/tacos are made and where to sit. There's no maitre'd waiting to kiss your feet. Hablas espanol? It will help, but not needed. I'm Asian and I try, but I could tell they get annoyed with me.
I really like the side bar for condiments like salt/pepper, limes, serrano peppers and radishes. Sprinkle some salt on those radishes and mash on your tacos.
Order the tacos and the quantity and the kinds of fixin's you want on it. go down the line and pay at the other corner of the store. Make sure to tip!!! You might want some more, because you'll destroy these tacos in two bites and come back for more. The guy behind the counter will remember your penny pinching earlier.
I'll easily drop thirty bucks at this place only feeding two people, which for me seems like a bargain because I'm not trying to slow cook the innards of a cow just two make two measly tacos. Feel me?
The bad: Lamentably the restroom attached to this place does not have a guy handing out mints, so hold that breath and do what you need to do. As mentioned earlier, you can literally eat these tacos in two bites and they have risen in price. So consider going to your run of the mill red and yellow taco shop to get a little more bang for your buck. If you're coming from out of town.... well you came to SD so make it rain. But, yeah, these tacos are costly for two bites. If you're a vegetarian, you're gonna get sick.
Verdict: I like this place and see it more as a novelty eatery. Although I have become rather jaded of its offerings due to multiple exposures, I do recommend it nonetheless.

3.5 stars
I wouldn't go out of my way to come here, but if I was in the neighborhood, it would be a good place to grab some tacos.
We got the lengua, cabeza, and some adobadas. The lengua and cabeza were simple beefy tacos, pretty good - there was a film of oil from the beef that kept the meat moist (but it wasn't heavy or overwhelming).
The adobadas may be the real star. It's got an extra kick of heat after finishing that makes it more unique than the average taco and more satisfying. It has a simple garnish of cilantro and onion so the meat flavor has to stand on it's own.
Also, got a horchata. At first sip, the horchata's cinnamon and milky flavor was heavier than other horchatas I've tried. But after several sips, it becomes more and more enjoyable. It was more good than refreshing.
The tacos are small and simply rolled in the warm tortillas. Simple but good. -

Love their pastor! Good salsa, decent horchata. Whenever we're back in the area, we'll be here!

A little roadside temple of joy. We rolled up in the pouring rain and filed into a very long line for tacos adobada-- i.e., al pastor. These were incredibly good. You can also get a plate of grilled green onions and grilled jalapenos, also incredibly good. There are tons of limes and radishes too.
After greedily devouring our tacos and licking our fingers, we both knew we had to have more. So we went back for carne asada. It was even better-- meaty, satisfying beef with a hint of smoke from the grill, and topped with an odd oniony salsa and a mysterious green cream. We also got more onions.
After greedily devouring them, we knew we had to have even more, so we went back for even more carne asada. Only then were we finally fortified to head back out into the night.
At last, we may have found a place that disproves the thesis that all of the best tacos in the U.S. come from trucks. -

Really, I don't know why you would go anywhere else for authentic Mexican tacos. Unless you figure you've already driven this far, why not just go a little farther...
But for real, as a legit Halfblood I know legit tacos when I see 'em and this is it people. When I stepped foot in this place I was flooded with memories of going with my tia to get tacos in Mexico City as a kid.
Not even gonna lie, I love my 24/7 carne asada burritos/fries too but if you don't already know that's not actual Mexican food, I am sad for you and beg you to get your sorry ass to Tacos El Gordo to educate yo'self.
Lengua. Get it, love it.
Only downsides I can think of: kindof a drive (and with gas prices these days, sheesh), and they don't have carnitas. Odd but I am choosing to overlook. -

So check this place out, you will love it!!

After my first of two carne asada tacos, I was thinking, 'I love lax immigration laws'. After the first of my two adobada tacos, I was think, Can I give a 6-star Yelp rating?'
This place is awesome. Usually, I prefer beef over pork, but their adobada was amazing. They cut the meat fresh off the bone right in front of you. They make their taco shells as you go. They have 1 person making fresh shells, and 3 other people making different types of tacos.
They have a nice, simple menu. They basically have tacos, of different beef and pork varieties. No chicken or seafood. No burritos. They do have quesadilla's and 1 or 2 other items made with taco shells. Definitely some of the best tacos ever.Listed in: Work Lunch Places, Mexican Places

I LOVE THIS PLACE! I think about and crave the food here on a regular basis.
Don't waste your time when you come here. The only items you should order are the taco with cow's head and the mula with adobada meat. I know, I know. Cow's head meat sounds gross, but it's moist and flavorful. The mula and adobada is awesome! They put a tortilla and slice of cheese on the grill, cover it with juicy adobada meat and another tortilla. YUM, I'm drooling just thinking about it...I only wish there was a Tacos El Gordo closer to where I live.Listed in: Best Thing(s) I Ever Ate

Wow, this place is amazing! This place was one of our last stops on our SD food tour. my friend took us here and told us to try the adobado taco. taking my first bite, i was slapped several times in the face by the tremendous amount of flavor and deliciousness of the taco. Soft, savory and it was my ticket into heaven. The place makes your tacos to order; you order it, cook grabs a piece of meat and throws in on the grill, from there it goes straight to your tortilla. I will forever make this place a must go to destination whenever i'm remotely in the area or just craving a really, really good taco.

Tacos El Gordo is muy delicioso!
I am currently doing my student teaching in National City and go here often. One of my fellow student teachers, whose parents live in Mexico, claims that the only thing keeping these TJ tacos from being the real deal is that they aren't a dollar.
Take a glance over the menu, but the best thing here, hands down, is the adobada taco! They toast two tortillas slathered in some pork fat, cut off pieces of tasty pork in front of your eyes, hit it with some cilantro/onion, and then a healthy spoonful of their creamy green sauce (avocado perhaps?). The flavor combo is explosive! If you like onions like me, make sure to ask for some grilled green onion. This is the only taco place I've come across that serves grilled green onion. I usually get a plate full, squirt some lime on them bad boys and have it alongside my tacos. They also have grilled peppers, but every time I've had them they were super spicy so fair warning if you can't handle heat. I typically judge a taco shop by their carne asada taco, which I've heard people love from this place but I wasn't blown away by their carne asada. For me, the adobada is really at the heart of what makes Tacos El Gordo a craveable eatery.
As the name suggests, there are multiple Tacos El Gordos. I actually prefer the Chula Vista one because they have a broader selection of meats (which of course I've tried them all). The first time I went to the one in Chula Vista, I don't think there was a part of the cow that I didn't try. The brains were probably my least favorite. Happy eating! -

San Diego, CA
Taco shops in shady neighborhoods are the best and Tacos El Gordo is definitely authentic and so delicious.
My first impression of this place is that the menu seemed very simple in comparison to other Mexican joints around SD that have a huge assortment of menu items. But, simple is good and the tacos spoke for themselves.
We split 5 tacos: 2 Adobada, Cabeza, Suadero and Tripe. The Adobada tacos were amazing, the pork was tender and the sauce that it comes with is zesty and goes so well with the taco. The Suadero was definitely a second favorite of mine and different because you don't see it on menus too often, the smoky seasoning really stood out to me. The tripe was my least favorite because it seemed a little bland and the texture of it wasn't all that appealing to me.
We drank horchata with all the taco goodness to complete the meal. It's just your standard horchata machine..unfortunately, not like those authentic bucket ones at La Fachada..which, apparently have flies all over them (I'm perfectly ok with that, btw) AND, I went back for a refill which..also according to some, is not allowed BUT, the workers didn't even reprimand me and I got away with some more horchata!*
The only minor downside to ordering here is that they put all the tacos on the same plate with no distinct indicator of which taco was which and left us questioning what we were eating.
All in all though, 5 yummy tacos for about $12? WIN. I will definitely be coming back here!
*To be fair, I flashed them a nice smile when I passed by them again to get to the dispenser machine and that's practically a dollar in the tip jar. -

The tacos al pastor from here would definitely be one of the items on my last meal. Hands down some of the best tacos I have ever had. Love these things. The other tacos (carne asada, pollo, etc.) are good but I can make those at home. It takes a few of their tacos to fill you up and at almost $2 a pop you can run the bill up pretty quick. Make sure to grab some cebollitas from the lady next to the al pastor guy.
I have been to the one in temecula but it did not taste as good as this one.
Great place to go for some killer tacos! -

Here goes
Pros:
-Adobada made on that spinning thing. Yezzir!
-Don't have to cross the border
-Fresh
-Fairly quick
Cons:
-No water!? What's that all about?
-Cold chorizo (possibly all the meats are cold other than the adobada)
-Expensive (it's not horrible but it's more than double the price you get across the border, so I guess that's the price you pay for not having to cross)
-Small (yes it's authentic but I want double the size for the price)
-It pained the lady to give me hot sauce when I dined in and they have a drive through where I got no hot sauce. I need my sauce!
Alright, so what's my point? Well if you're too chicken or too occupied to cross the border and must have your tacos like NOW, go here. I'm sure there are equally great and cheaper taco spots out there in SD but i still haven't discovered them and I know some people are picky about getting food from "just anywhere." My cheapo tip is get a mulita and make 2 tacos out if it. It comes with two tortillas and suffficient meat. I'm a big eater and on a budget. I'd need at least 4 tacos for a fill. And don't order the chorizo, such a letdown. It's worth it to try the adobada. -

HANDS DOWN BEST TACOS I EVER TRIED IN MY LIFE.
I've been trying all these tacos everywhere around my area but all Tacos El Gordo has my heart in terms of tacos. I'm just like "man, this tacos are wack. I wish it can be half as good as the ones in SD." If i can grant a wish, I would wish for El gordo to be in my area even if it's only for a few days. ARGH I WANT EL GORDO TACOS!!!
They don't really have a big menu but that's fine. Simple menu and easy way to order...honestly all the different kind of meat has something so delicious about them. Abogada where they literally cut the pork meat right in front of you and they grill it some more to give you a bit of that crispy texture yet having such a tender feel to it. It's simply amazing!
Honestly, I don't love cabeza at all but man they make cabeza so amazing here and i tried to places here but I really just wanna throw up what i eat because the taste doesn't even compare.
Point is if i was in SD, I would be here 3 times a week at least even if i was gonna become obese at least I'll die happy.
So El Gordo...ever think about opening up around rowland heights?! hehe...no but really though. -

Another awesome taco place I love going to, every time I come down to San Diego. I literally can get 5 adobada tacos (with their special sauce) and eat them, and just order 5 more and keep eating. Tacos here are delicious (carne asada are awesome as well) and are cheap, fast, and easy! What else can you ask for?

As soon as I got off the plane on this San Diego visit, my brother told me that he found a taco place that would change my whole opinion on carne asada tacos. In fact, I recall him telling me on at least two occasions, that Tacos El Gordo would "recalibrate my standards on carne asada completely." After a long wait and a lot of hyping, we finally made it down to National City.
These might possibly be the best tacos I've ever had. No joke. The meat is phenomenal. Like smokey, spicy, yummy... with fresh homemade guac and salsa. You walk up to the counter, order and watch the red-shirted guys make the tacos at lightning speeds. The homemade corn tortillas are fantastic. I had a couple carne asada tacos. These tacos at $1.85 are pretty life-changing and definitely changed my standards on what carne asada should taste like.
I also had the adobada tacos which you can order at the end of the line. The adobada ones are kinda greasy... but like fantastically tasting greasy. Like this might hurt my insides later kind of greasy, but damn it's worth it.
So yeah, this place is awesome, cheap and delicious. It's not fancy, in fact from the outside it looks like it used to be a Pizza Hut or some other fast food chain. But I left happy and full with the case of the itis. I definitely needed Tums on the ride home but man oh man, those were some banging tacos.
Side note: My brother definitely had this "I told you so" look on his face and for good reason. Well done, bro! -

Pros:
Freaking Amazingly Good
Authentic Mexican Tacos
Made to Order
All are centrally located
Open Late. Way Late.
Cons:
Expensive! 2 bucks a taco!?!?
No Water??
ionno why but everytime im in there, i'm just cold. lolz
Verdict:
I only come here for special occasions. Its kinda expensive and i just cant shell out 8 bucks for 4 tacos. But when I wanna go somewhere coo with my girl after a movie or if im out late partying or something, i can always count on this place right here to be on point and good. The Asada is deadly good. The Adobada is even better.
If you have the funding to come here all day everyday, than u have got yourself a great taco joint.
Tips for Management:
Stop Showing Spanish Only Television
Get Some Heaters

Sopes, oh how I love thee. This Tacos El Gordo location is much closer than the Chula Vista one, which is good for me because I don't have to drive practically to Mexico to get me some good Mexican food.
El Gordo has the very best sope you will ever eat, period. Their adobada is freaking amazing as well. The women behind the counter fixing your food don't speak a lick of English, so when you order, just say "me gustaria dos sopes de adobada por favor!" And enjoy. -

Were hungry, its 11pm, time for some tacos!!!
Food:
I tried the Adobada tacos. I had two. MY GOD, they were awesome, some of the best tasting tacos i had in my life! meat was juicy and flavorful. the cream based sauce just sealed the deal. Little bits of onions and cilantro gave it the taco some texture and contrast. That thing just looked beautiful. After 2, i got 4 more. Thats how good it was. I dont know how to describe it some more, its just a symphony of flavors and textures in my mouth. sure its greasy, but man it was tasty.
Atmosphere:
its a taco joint in SD. no frills, just good food.
High replay value here, ill come here if im in town, but im always down to roam the night for tacos!! -

Okay. So, after moving down to the san diego area and living here for the past four years, I've been telling myself, "damn. SD knows what's up with their Mexican food." I've been to a bunch of Mexican places around the area and thought I knew all the best places to get some real Mexican food.
One day, my friends took me to this place far far away in national city for some tacos. My goodness. After biting into the adobada meat, wow. I felt like such a noob. Then I began asking myself, "How did I not know about this place before? How come nobody has brought me here til now?" It made me so sad. Now, I only have a few more months left in San Diego before I move back home.... :(
Anyway, back to the food. Tacos de adobado (or is it adobada?) are so freakin good. There is something magical in it. When you watch the guy cut the meat and throw in all the cilantro, onions, and the sauce.... The sauce. THE GREEN SAUCE. What is that green sauce?!
If you're hungry, have an access to a car, and you've never been here before, go now.
p.s. they take cards. -

If you want tacos, authentic from Tijuana, this is the place to go.
Easy tips for ordering:
1. Order any type of meat tacos, excluding adobada, once you enter.
2. Only, order adobada at the end of the food line.
3. Make sure they place your adobada on the griddle to crisp it up. They won't if you don't say anything.
4. Order fried green onions. It's not on the menu and they don't mention it unless you ask them. It's well worth it.
5. They only have bottled water here. No ice water do stick with a diet soda due to the heaviness of the meal.
6. Stick with the adobada tacos, salsa on the side. It's the best. -

I would have to say this is THE BEST TACO SHOP here in SD. Their meat has so much flavor. Hands down the best I've ever tried.
CONS
A little pricey $1.85 - $2.10 per taco specially for the size
(dont get me wrong I'll still pay that price just coz its good) -

I get the adobada tacos. They are the best tacos I have ever had. Corn tortilla, perfectly seasoned meat, cilantro, onions, and an amazing sauce. The tacos are small and a couple dollars each, but I can't think of anything I have ever eaten that tastes better. When the last bite is over, I always have to hold back tears.

Sooo delicious, far from our place but worth the drive. My favorites were the tripa and adobado. His favorites were the lengua, cabeza, and abobado. The tacos were just like you can get in Tijuana without actually going to Tijuana, which is a plus.

Tacos El Gordo, I'm addicted to you.
I make the drive from La Jolla to National City once a week..sometimes more..and with gas being $70 a tank that's saying A LOT.
The adobada here is simply amazing. Juicy porky goodness! And that sauce! It's soooo good! I've tried some of the other meats but I always come crawling back to the adobada carving station for my tacos and tostadas. My only critique is that I wish they had a really spicy sauce like King Taco or El Taurino in LA...oh well! can't have everything! I'm more than happy with Tacos El Gordo as is. -

this was my first experience at Tacos El Gordo...about 11 years ago. I had never eaten anything so amazing in my life!! i had a carne asada taco and a adobada taco. mmmm....i was hooked for life.
For those of you who don't know...the Adobada (pork) is carved off a hunk of meat on a stick ...like getting a Gyro sandwich....but so much better!!!!
since then the prices have gone up...but still worth every penny.
and the radishes from the "salad" bar add such a perfect touch to the yummy tacos. everyone is super friendly here, even though i dont speak Spanish (this was intimidating at first for me)
11 years later...i am still going here...but i still have not ventured beyond my Adobada taco. My hubby has tried everything there...tongue, head, brain ...whatever else traditional taco meat they have...not for me!!!! -

Not the best area but REAL Mexican food and one of the best Taco al Pastors that I have had in my life. It's cheap and they are small. I ate myself into a stuper out here. I just couldn't get enough. I wouldn't probably come here at night. It's definitely a cheap restaurant set up. It's good though. You can't go wrong.
Oh and they had all kinds of Cow Tongue and things like that. IF your into that sort of thing. -

Tell me why I grew up in National City & Paradise Hills but I JUST found out about this place recently?! What the heck!?!
I really like the set-up of this taco shop because the meats are separated & conveniently labeled. It took me a while to figure out how to order but I got my tacos after watching the regulars! I like lengua & carne asada.
If it's your first time, walk up to whichever counter has the meat that you want and the nice taco chefs will ask you what else you would like mixed in. This is also a great opportunity to practice your Spanish! After you get all the taco goodness that you want, the cashier is on the opposite side of the restaurant. I think this is to give you time in case you decide you want more tacos. Don't forget the horchata, hot sauces, & lime on the side!Listed in: I heart SD

As me and my family walked in, we were clearly the only non-hispanic people inside. Anyways, they have a counter where you order your food and then you head to the back for their cash register.
The tacos weren't expensive, but I wouldn't say their cheap either. The cooks are all hispanic too, and I had to order in my very broken Spanish. Good thing I still remembered my numbers.. "Um.. uh. Cinco.. Adobadas?" Embarrassing, but hey I got what I ordered!
The adobadas were really good! Asada was pretty good. The Lengua was cut into slices as opposed to cubes. I thought it was okay, I rather it cut in cubes, I think the favor sinks in more and it's more tender.
I didn't get any grilled onions or peppers, and I wasn't sure how to ask in Spanish. LOL.
Either way, this place is good! I live a bit far from here, so probably wouldn't venture out here usually. But if I pass by, will probably go again. Only thing is it's slightly pricey for just street tacos albeit delicious street tacos.Listed in: Mexican! without crossing the…

My hubby and I were headed to a long day of outlet shopping and decided to have lunch nearby. I came here since I saw such great reviews by my fellow yelpers and boy were we not disappointed!! The adobada tacos were prepared with freshly made tortillas and a pleasant cilantro sauce. I do wish the tacos were a bit bigger since I finished a taco in pretty much 3 bites but that won't stop me from coming back!
