This is my go to "nicer" dim sum place.  I usually come here if I want a nicer dining experience or if I have guests in town.  The service is always fast and I always leave feeling satisfied.
I always tend to get here early so that I don't have to worry about waiting for a long time.  Maybe I've come here so often that I don't notice how pushy they are, or I only go to pushy places but I don't see their pushiness as any better or worse than anywhere else.
The only reason it's getting 4 stars is because I think some of their items used to be better.  But I'll keep coming back...

I'm not really a fan of overly salty and deep fried foods, so for that reason this wasn't really my type of restaurant. The main reason we went here as for the crab buffet (which is an extra $5). The crab itself is deep fried and heavily salted. I wouldn't really consider it an appealing way to prepare it.

They did have unlimited oysters with the buffet which I liked. The staff was definitely friendly, but the food just didn't agree with me.

Where to go for Dim Sum that is close enough for those who live downtown and central enough for others that need parking?
Szechuan Chongqing Seafood restaurant.  They have Cantonese Dim Sum during the day.

Along side the regular dishes, this summer they were serving freshly squeezed orange juice and had some szechuan green beans to kick up the flavour buds over the regular dim sum fare.

Made reservations for 11 am the day before.  We arrived and were one of the first tables there.  The nice thing about eating early is that it's early enough that nobody has had breakfast and late enough on a weekend that the younger generation would be up to eat.

Some of the dishes are not as plump as say some of the more modern Chinese restaurants, but they still have the carts and they also do table service.  You can get the best of both worlds.

We had Gai lan with oyster sauce which was quite nice.
Fresh and hot food came to us pretty fast.  So fast that we didn't have time to eat when the table was full of food.

We had to turn away dishes food was coming so fast.

Free parking in the back if you arrive early enough and there is also street parking as well.

People would ask why this place.  Well, it has a special place in my heart that's why.

    Great service today.

And the balcony was open so you could have your dim sum outdoors and enjoy the sunshine.

I've driven past here so many times. The bf & I came here craving dim sum and wonton soup.

Wonton soup = broth was bland.. the wontons were good. With a little soy sauce and chili sauce it tasted just fine.

Dim Sum = Okay. My fave was the steamed pork bun and the chinese 'canneloni', yum!

Service = Okay. I had to ask for my gingerale 2 times. This seems to be a theme with me at restaurants. They always 'forget' my soda!

I want to come back and try more things off the menu like the tan tan noodles, maybe it would give them an extra star. I just didn't think it was spectacular as it could have been..

I give this place A for effort.  The dim sum cart ladies work hard to push food on your table..The crowd is very Westernize, so the restaurant will serve non traditional dim sum foods like bbq duck, sweet and sour stuff and deep fried chicken wings.. lol.
Food is consistent, washrooms are cleaner than your average chinese restaurant and free parking in the back.

Chongqing has several locations, and they are all quite different. This one on Broadway is better suited for dim sum, while the Commercial drive location has the szechuan dinner style down to an art.
I find that the dinner menu is less spicy and not as good as the Commercial drive location.

On to the dim sum. Cheap, fast, busy. Get there early. However, the weekend lineup is not usually that long. I've never waited more than about 15 minutes. Seating and service is prompt. Let Romeo hit on the ladies at your table, and he'll take good care of you. Be weary of the "new customer pounce". The floating cart that has lone items on it. They'll try to load you up with cold cart combos, unless you're strong enough to say no, or hungry enough to say yes. The variety is good, but not great. They have all the standard items, but not enough to avoid a fair bit of duplication if you're with a large group. I love the fact that they now have small portions of deep fried salt and pepper crab on the dim sum menu. The prices are good. I usually average about $15 including tax and tip for a decent sized outing.

I am pregnant and was craving Dim Sum this weekend and I needed it fast.  My first thought was Kirin but I was in no state to wait an hour in line for it.  So I was thinking were can I get FAST, cheap dim sum.  First I thought Hon's but it's true...their dim sum is kinda slimey and soggy.  So off to Szechuan Chongquing we went.

We were seated immediately and got a dish of Ha-gow in literally 30 seconds.  But, unfortunately there weren't any carts going around.  He said we came too late and there were no more carts but some servers kinda just showing you baskets in their hands walking around.

So we ordered dim sum off the menu, except for our first dish of Ha-Gow's.  Everything came really quickly and tasted great!  The only downfall with ordering from the menu is you can very easily over order.  Of course being pregnant and starving we ordered 7 dishes between the 2 of us.  We didn't finish our last 2 dishes but we came close.

I wouldn't go here for a special occasion or a date but if you are in the mood for fast and affordable dim sum this place does the trick.  The table clothes are plastic so you can kinda get an idea of the place.

If you want Dim Sum for late lunch on Sat or Sun hit up this place. No lines and cheap good food:)

We decided to order from the Chongqing last night after years of living in the same neighborhood as it and I'm SO glad we finally tried it!

Our meal arrived fairly quickly after ordering and was brought by a super friendly driver wearing a suit and tie - he even said hello to our cat! Definitely high marks for awesome delivery! ;)

All of our food was deliciously seasoned and very fresh - do yourself a favor and get the szechuan green beans and steamed pork dumplings! We couldn't get enough of either of those two dishes.

I'm looking forward to enjoying more from Szechuan Chongqing in the future!

Yet another place that I used to love, but now hate. Came for dim sum today. The managers were friendly and seated us quickly, provided tea, etc but the female servers and the quality of the dim sum ruined this place for me.

I'm used to their style of bringing around dishes via cart to your table where you say yay or nay, but today they were downright pushy, literally put food on our table we didn't want. When I tried to ask a server for some vinegar she rudely cut me off, said 'later' and ran away.

The dim sum itself was probably the worst quality I've had in ages, with a couple of the dishes un-finishable.

My favourite dim sum restaurant in this city!

Of course, if you compare it to the upper echelon blah blah joints like Kirin or Sun Sui Wah, it doesn't really hold the candle. But everything else overly compensates plus more. I love the fact that there's patio seating (it opens in the summer sometimes). Love that it's in south Granville, although parking in the back is sometimes a bitch. Love that it serves authentic dimsum (it's Vancouver, of course it's authentic) BUT caters to a largely Caucasian crowd, thus demanding a higher standard of service. It's true, the male servers and/or managers are always the same guys and they actually crack a smile and reply in Canton and/or English. I LOVE THAT! Do you know how few places will speak bilingually to you on demand? Not many, that's for sure.

(I have a chip on my shoulder with Chinese people not speaking Chinese to me. Can you tell?)

But I digress.  Back to the food. They do the whole wheeling cart around to taking paper orders, serve awesome preserved egg congee and siu long bao. Everything's clean, I don't get sick, most dishes are about $2. Five stars!

As this was my first visit to this location I am hoping they were simply having an off night and this is not the usual standard of service or food.

That said, its hard to believe a restaurant could have done worse unless they have some twisted sense of culinary humor and I was left out of the punchline. In that case I should have paid with monopoly money and we could of all had a laugh.

Quick summary:  Odd , sporadic, chaotic service from numerous people other then our waiter who truly seemed baffled by our presence. Two reasonably good dishes, deluxe fried rice (although somewhat oily) and ginger beef (nice and crispy) Disapointing green beans (go to Banana leaf or Lins for these) and one missing dish (Lemon citrus chicken) that took several people to ascertain its wherabouts and when it finally arrived it was truly the worst I could have imagined...an overabundance of breading that tasted like corn flakes ?..humh and almost non existent chicken...basically as thin as lunch meat..very odd, and paired with a coagulated yellow goo that was to pass as a lemon sauce. Simply a disaster.

Even though it could have simply been an off night, I think I will pass on giving this one another try.

Sorry to say, my date got sick right afterwards.

A bad sign is a Chinese restaurant where there are almost no Chinese people.

The staff were very friendly and gracious.  The decor is very nice, nothing at all (!) like any normal Chinese restaurant - very Western.   Kind of like Anne of Green Gables meets chop suey.

The lemon chicken was a terrible idea.  Almost no chicken, just micro-filaments of chicken with a lot of batter which was overfriend.  Sat awfully in our stomachs.

The greens were plentiful, but no flavour or finesse.

Give me a normal Chinese restaurant where real Chinese people eat, any day.  I won't be back.  Friendly staff, but good food matters to us.

Over the numerous years this place has been open it has provided an extremely consistent szechuan experience, which is why I find my family and I returning here numerous times.

They have everything available to those with a more western palate. The General Tso's, ginger beef, lemon chicken, chicken chow mein don't exactly scream Szechuan, but if that's what you like it's pretty decent here.

What I like is the tan tan noodles, scallion pancakes, their ma po tofu, and chilli egg plants.  All made with fairly explosive flavor.

Service is a bit better than the average Asian restaurant, which means they actually serve you without pushing you out the door ASAP

I've been going to this place since I was a kid, and this place is a sort of family staple. The food is awesome and the ginger beef is far and away my favourite. The waiters and waitresses are super friendly, and always willing to give suggestions to those who might not know exactly what they want. The place is great for large groups of 6 or more, but I wouldn't recommend it if you're looking for a quiet dinner for two as its always loud and packed.

It is acctually quite hard to dish out such a low review to this restaurant so I am going to walk you through my pros and cons list and we can come to the 2 star conclusion together.

Pro: Free Parking = a novelty in Vancouver!
Con: Poorly marked free parking = okay maybe I was a bit slow on this one but sadly I did not notice the free parking until AFTER I paid for parking on Broadway. Fail.

Pro: Friendly Staff = the servers were polite, seemingly well organised and they brought food to us right after we sat down.
Cons: Not really dim sum style = this relates to the staff because as Mark, a previous poster, noted... they dont wheel the carts around, show you everything, drop it on your table and move on. Here there isn't even enough space for them to wheel the carts between the tables... they just say the names and hold it from a-far. Not as much fun! Additionally, there was only one cart there at the time and that is just no good.

Pro: It's cheap.... mmmm $2.75 per dish, makes it taste all that much more tingly or maybe that's the...
Con: That tingly sensation. That's the MSG. Seriously. I was loopy and felt like up-chucking for about an hour after this meal. While I enjoyed everything I ate, I just cannot get over the horrible buzz I had after eating. Never again.

I stopped in here for dinner with a friend who greeted the waiter with a hug. Now I understand why she's been dining here consistently over the years.

Szechuan Chongqing has the tastiest, spicy shrimp I've ever sampled. An edge of crispiness plus ample spice and perfectly cooked. If only I'd had room to eat more. The Peking duck also was deliciously crispy, and the other dishes of tofu, pork, and noodles were superb. We left as a group of full, happy diners. And lucky me -- I got the leftovers!

Chongqing is a good place to get simple and authentic dim sum. Located just outside of downtown, it's a short stone's throw away from Broadway and Granville, making it a super convenient spot to get your Chinese fix.

Like most Chinese restaurants in Vancouver, no matter what the size, it's a bit cramped, making it hard for those metal carts to get around the restaurant. Even on the tail-end of the dim sum rush, it was busy. Luckily we were still able to get some of our favourites, like har gau (shrimp dumplings), shaomai and spare ribs. They even had some vegetarian dishes so I wasn't completely left out of the mix. The taro dumplings were delicious. Sadly, though, they were out of egg tarts. Oh well. All the more reason to pay Chongqing another visit.

This restaurant used to make real Szechuan food. But now, they make the most ridiculous BAD Szechuan food I have ever had in my whole life.  As we walked into the restaurant, the place was pretty packed for a Friday night. My warning sign went up immediately as I noticed almost all of the customers there were not Chinese.  Absolutely no offense,  it is great that people of different cultures try Chinese food; but honestly, when even Chinese don't even eat at a Chinese restaurant, that is almost an equal sign for REALLY bad Chinese food.  But at that time we were hungry for food, so we gave it a leap of faith anyway.  The place was packed, cannot have that many people with bad taste.  Well which of course later on reaffirm the belief "no Chinese at a Chinese restaurant = bad Chinese food".

The service was ok. We sat down and looked at the menu and cannot believe my eyes. I frequently many sitdown Chinese restaurants in Vancouver but have never found them to be that expensive!  We ordered shanghai steamed dumpling, Szechuan fried rice and a potsticker, it costed us a total of $38 at the end. I won't complain if the food is good, but in this case the food is no where near edible.  We left the Szechuan fried rice pretty much untouched as it was cooked with ketchup ( haha wtf! With ketchup for Szechuan fried rice?!?!?!).  The shanghai steamed dumpling is hideous as the filling inside were made with the worst quality minced porked i have ever seen, way more solid fat than the actual pork meat. We could only do our best to finished the potstickers as it was the only edible dish on our table.

In summary, we will never ever come here again.

I can't compare this to any other Dim Sum places in Vancouver, but compared to places back home in Los Angeles and the surrounding Asian communities.....this is good stuff!

At less than $3 CAD per Dim Sum dish, you can't go wrong.  This was a good brunch and the service was quick & friendly.

My favorite dim sum restaurant by far, worth 2 or 3 visits each time I go to Vancouver.  Service is excellent, food is always fresh and there's a good rotation of dim sum items.  Especially good are the bean curd rolls, the deep fried shrimp and vegetable triangles, and all the steamed stuff.  Very good value for what you get.
