Ooh, yelpers, I think an average rating of 2.5 *s is a little harsh for Sweet Tooth.
I bought a chocolate cupcake with vanilla buttercream frosting. I'm generally not a fan of buttercream frosting, but I have to say that the frosting here is very good. I ate all of it and didn't discard it as I normally do. The chocolate cake of the cupcake was okay. It wasn't dry, but I like my cake moister. Good chocolate flavor. A pretty good cupcake overall.
The bakery itself is rather adorable. If you live in the Danforth or walking around and happen to pass by while wanting a sweet treat, you can stop here for something.
I've been living in the Danforth for a couple years now and everytime I walk by Sweet Tooth I have to give it a good long stare through the window. All the treats in there look so damn cute and sweet!
Everything about the atmosphere of the place--the decor, layout of goods, selection--is appealing to the sweet tooth's eye. However, that is probably the only good thing about Sweet Tooth. The downfall I think is that it is pricey in comparison to the taste. I've had the Chocolate Raspberry Cupcake and the Flourless Chocolate Torte with berries. Both were pretty good, but I cringed at the price of both of them. I definitely could find something equally or even better at a bakery in leslieville, beaches or Kensington market.
It's hard to justify a cupcake that is over $3.00, especially when it's not even baked in-house (most/all of the good are made in a "warehouse" bakery and shipped in daily/weekly--according to my source).
I will probably not be dropping by Sweet Tooth again this summer or even for a while because my wallet can't handle the prices. I will however, always take a nice long look through the window!
Delicious find on the Danforth! We wandered in here while patrolling the streets for something sweet (which, sadly, happens a little too often), and got seduced by the name and the decor.
And when we saw the baked goods display, it was love at first sight.
The place is small, quaint, and narrow, and the lady behind the counter was very talkative and kind. The day we were there, they were in the process of waiting for their fridge to come in to stock beverages, cause as of then it was limited to water or coffee. But who cares?! Who needs to stay hydrated when you could stuff yourself with the array of beautiful cakes, pies, cookies, squares, brownies, etc.?!
We had to go with the slice of pie she recommended - the name of which I cannot remember as it was a blur of pecans, chocolate shortcake crust, more chocolate, caramel, and some other goodness that pushed me over the edge. What sold us? The fact that it won BEST DESSERT at a recent food convention. The slice was huge, and while a little pricey (about $7), it was more than two of us could handle. It was divine. Best ever? Perhaps not. But up there on the list? Absolutely.
In speaking with the lady behind the counter between mouthfuls of pie, apparently they have a specialist baker for each "category" (ex. pies, misc baked treats, cakes, etc.), but the team behind the wedding cakes dept. is constantly overwhelmed, pushing out almost 5 cakes per day! Forget Cake Boss, these folks need their own show!
All in all, if you find yourself wandering 'round the Danforth, definitely sneak in here. But be warned - I'll be impressed if you can walk out of there empty handed.
My visit here was completely on a whim.. when I came home I checked reviews and was quite surprised! I wonder if they revamped their cupcakes recently, because I had a red velvet one here last week and it was amazing.
The cake itself was melt-in-your-mouth soft, the icing was fresh and piled high on the cake. My only critique is the icing was just a bit too sweet for me - but I'm sure most people would enjoy it. Nothing too sweet to keep me from craving one right now as I write this review.
The shop itself is very cute with a bunch of amazing looking treats. There isn't much room to sit down, but it wasn't busy there anyways. I opted to get my cupcake to go and the girl behind the counter took great care in wrapping my cupcake to make sure it didn't get damaged in transport.
I really like this place and I'll be back.
Great name, great look and a nice change from the standard Danforth pastry shops... but it's not a place I need to visit again.
The first thing I ever bought at Sweet Tooth was a cupcake. I'm nuts about cupcakes and will try one anywhere I go. The cake was dry and stale - possibly it had been on the shelf for days. The shop was newer back then, so maybe they hadn't the traffic to move product quickly.
Of course, they carry product that is baked elsewhere too. For example the famous Phipps butter tarts. There's no detriment to a shop in carrying a high quality, ubiquitous product - unless that product is really over-priced. Compare Sweet Tooth's Phipp's butter tart to the same one, say, in Cabbagetown. It's impossible to justify paying $4 for a tart you can get elsewhere for $2.25.
It's too bad because there aren't a lot of other choices on the strip.
My rating for Sweet Tooth needs to fall right in the middle of the scale because while I quite enjoy some of their goodies, I strongly dislike some others. So, let's start off with the bad.
Bad: The cupcakes. And considering I'm a cupcake-oholic, this is a HUGE problem. I've given these cupcakes a try a couple of times and will do so no longer. The flavours in both the cake and the icing are extremely lacking and the texture really isn't anything to write home about either. Now, I know I'm picky with my cupcakes, but I really will never go here for a cupcake anymore, even though it's the closest place to my apartment when I need a fix.
Good: Just about everything else. Nothing is super spectacular, mind you, but I'm always pleased with any of the brownies, cakes, or pies I've tried from there. Also, the atmosphere is quite lovely and the staff is always very friendly. They also have a great selection of Numi teas which they'll serve you up in a beautiful glass mug.
This place proves that you really cannot judge a book by its cover...because the cover would get 4 stars- by cover, I mean the outside, interior decor and 'prettiness' of the desserts. The stuff looks great and seemingly delicious...but that's where you'd be wrong. I have repeatedly (foolishly) given this place a try. I have had various snack desserts (squares, cookies, cupcakes) and a few different cakes. While they all were stunning to look at and the look of the cakes certainly impressed those that we served them to, the flavour was incredibly forgettable. The stuff is just plain 'bland'! And, like Phillip says, not exactly what you want to pay for 'bland'.
I am done with this joint. I live around the corner and was excited to see a non-Greek pastry shop in our 'hood but it looks like I'll have to keep waiting for something decent to really impress me.
ps. The frozen yogurt is absolutely disgusting- don't even go there.
Let it be known that I am extremely fussy when it comes to my cupcakes.
Also a few things should probably be taken into consideration regarding my review. 1 - I was in Greektown, so suffice to say I had just gorged myself on a completely inhuman amount of food and 2 - it was very late and so everything we got had probably been sitting out for quite some time by that point.
Still, it wasn't sitting out in the open air, it was in a pastry case, so I'm only giving you so much leeway.
I ordered 1 vanilla and 1 carrot cupcake. Both looked impeccable, the carrot with it's cream cheese icing and miniature carrot on top was so cute I didn't want to eat it - and perhaps would have been better off if I had not. It was dry and the carrots didn't seem to be fully grated, it had chunks of carrot. Maybe some people like it that way, but I want my cupcake to be soft as a cloud and melt in my mouth with minimal chewing required.
The vanilla was better on the cupcake aspect, but the icing was hardly edible. It was very dry, to the point of being almost crystalized (possibly due to the aforementioned late hour of the day).
If I'm in the area again sometime earlier in the day I might stop in and give them a second chance. Or try the "best apple pie" someone else mentioned in their review. But, for now, Sweettooth is not somewhere I'm going to go out of my way to fulfill my cupcake cravings.
One evening I was walking about Greektown after work and decided to check out this bakery with the purpose of trying out their cupcakes. The place itself looked like a lovely place to hang out and the girl behind the elaborate display counter of ALL their treats was very friendly.
However, this review's sole purpose is to talk about their cupcakes which are not baked there along with the other treats simply based on lack of space. Anyway, on with the real review:
Chocolate Chocolate - Both the cake and frosting is really dense. The frosting was particularly fudge-like and the cake was bittersweet.
Vanilla Vanilla - The cake was a bit too dry for my liking but the frosting was very light and fluffy.
Vanilla Strawberry - This is essentially the vanilla cake with a strawberry frosting of the same consistency as their regular vanilla. Lovely strawberry flavour.
Chocolate Raspberry - This chocolate cake was FAR more moist than the one that is paired in the Chocolate Chocolate cupcake. And the frosting is the perfect companion with the cake. This is definitely my favourite of the lot.
Chocolate Mocha - If I could have a second favourite, this is it. The same moist chocolate cake with a buttery mocha flavoured frosting. If I had one criticism, I think the mocha was a bit hidden and needed to be kicked up a notch or two.
Carrot - Moist carrot cake with a cream cheese frosting. A perfect opportunity to stand out from their other cupcake choices but sadly it's almost there for the sake of being the alternative to chocolate of vanilla. It was okay but nothing to write home about,

a quick summary of my review : $7 piece of key-lime pie (one piece)
I went here with a friend after going to messini, where dinner for the both of us cost $16 flat, and then we decided to come to sweet tooth because we were a little weary of going to athens for dessert so often.
I will never step foot in this place again, I have never seen such gross overpricing, and for not that much extra quality. The piece of pie was a little smaller than average. It was good but it was certanly not the best key-lime pie I have ever had and if they are charging $7 for a small piece of it then it better be the best damn key lime pie I will ever have.
But it was not, and with that I fail this restaurant, I was expecting some overpricing (around 3-4 dollars) but $7 is just.... obscene.
I did not try any of their other desserts but I am fairly sure that my results would be the same, so unless you are someone with lots of money to burn never go in here.
$7 piece of pie.... what the fuck?
The chocolate cupcake with raspberries was good but I have had way better (again, i cannot say this more often, CRUMBS in NYC people!!!). I liked that the icing was not too sweet and it had small pieces of raspberries in it. However the cake itself was pretty disappointing especially at that price (around $3.70).
Sprinkled with all the Greek pastry shoppes on the Danforth, Sweet Tooth is a cute little decadent bakery on the strip. They sell really beautifully crafted cakes, which looked picture perfect. They also sell little dessert treats, bite size squares and such. Having just eaten lunch, I was tempted to buy their pumpkin shaped cookie, but my stomach urged me to resist. STUPID stomach!
One thing that I am interested in picking up next time is their apple pie. They have a sign inside their store boasting they have the best apple pie in the city. According to some guy from the National Post... That's a big statement, and I'm going to need some proof to back it up!
In the back of the store they have a small seating area, so you can take your desserts and devour them in shop. They also have a nice selection of bottled juices, water, and teas too... If you're looking for soda, you ain't going to find it here!
