Review from Jonny B.
Toronto, ON
Many Thai spots opening up in Whitby lately... I have been driving past Sweet Basil for about 4 months. It's in a weird spot, taking up half of the large former KFC on the west side of downtown. The other half of the building is the closed down KFC. Sweet Basil is very plain on the outside with only a small sign that gets almost obliterated by what's left of "The Colonel".
Once inside this place ain't no chicken joint. It's smallish, but nicely outfitted with a clean design and bright interior. Friendly servers made dish recommendations - depending on the level of heat you like.
The first thing I'll say about sweet basil is their portion sizes are not massive, but the quality and presentation of the dishes was excellent. Tastes in my family vary from vegetarian and mild to hot & spicy... So we tried a few things.
Appetizers
Thai spring rolls - Crispy filled with chicken & veggies - perfectly cooked, golden brown - the standard sweet and sour dipping sauce, but still fantastically tasty.
Fresh spring rolls - bean sprouts, pickled carrots and coriander. Too many bean sprouts for my taste, but they were a hit with my kid.
Mains
1. Vegetarian Pad Thai - not actually on the menu, however they made this dish for us no fuss... Replacing the chicken and shrimp with extra veggies and tofu. The tamarind sauce was fantastic.
2. Thai spicy chicken - white meat chicken, green beans, lime leaves and Thai basil stir fried with a red curry paste. I was thrilled with this dish, I like my veggies to be al dente so this was perfect, with a really decent amount of spicy kick.
3. Pineapple chicken curry - white meat chicken, pineapple, Thai basil in a red curry... This dish is almost a standard at all Thai places.... This was my favourite of he night... An awesome delicate blend of tastes the perfect amount of chicken and pineapple - Sweet with a little heat = tummy happiness.
Many overlook the rice.... This is where I was impressed. Sweet Basil offers a great rice selection. Steamed Thai jasmine, steamed brown rice, steamed sticky rice, steamed coconut rice, plus multiple takes on fried rice - veggie, chicken, crab, shrimp, pineapple etc.
We stuck with jasmine and sticky rice. Both were perfectly cooked and fluffy.
Table service was very friendly, fast and efficient.
If your looking Thai food "quality" over quantity this is the place for you. It's become my regular Thai place. Looking forward to trying the mango salad and cashew chicken next visit.
