One of the most fascinating stores I have ever seen, Suzie Q Beads specializes in designer beads and jewellery.
Decorated in the most awe-inspiring way, Suzie Q Beads lures people in from the streets. Filled with Japanese lanterns, lights, hardwood floors, display cases and beads that you only thought existed in your dreams, Suzie Q sits in a league of its own.
I was thoroughly impressed by the way they display their beads. Throughout the store there are not only display cases, but chest of drawers that are extensively labelled with their contents. Whether you're looking for Swarovski crystals or a rare type of bead, absolutely everything is organized according to size, colour and type.
Not only does Suzie Q Beads carry beads and jewellery, but they've got all the tools you'd need to make the perfect fashion accessory. I'm talking chain link, special jewellery making tools and charms.
They even offer a variety of classes! With classes such as "Earring Boot Camp", "Ooo-la-la Pearls" and "Beading For Beginners", Suzie Q Beads offers our city flavour like no other bead shop in town.
Whether you're dabbling in jewellery making or are a well-known jewellery designer, Suzie Q Beads is your one-stop, mind-blowing, shop. -
Review from Wendy P.
Have you ever discovered that the more you learn, the less you know? I experience that every time I explore a new store or pursue a new hobby. I have a couple of friends who make jewelry. Shopping at their Christmas parties is one of my favourite things. Except that the more time I spend around handcrafted jewelry, the more I want to try making my own. It can't be that hard, right?
Today I discovered just how little I know about the world of beading and jewelry making. I used to love stringing together little necklaces when I was a kid. I'd buy bottles and bags of those little beads, some fishing wire and I was set for hours. It was pretty straight forward, I didn't need any classes for that. And if I could do it when I was 7, surely in my late 20s I could figure out a bracelet or two.
If there's one thing to know about me, it's that when I get it in my head that I want to do something, I'll find some way to start playing around with it, and not always with the greatest success. On the jewelry front, it's a good thing I found Judith. She set me straight. I was poking around the shop for quite awhile, checking out the various beads and projects a girl could make (or boy). Some of the bracelets caught my eye.
I asked Judith: "If I don't want to wait for a class, what would you recommend I take home with me to get started?"
"Wait to take a beginner class," she replied. "The instructor goes through the basics like the different kinds of beads and how to tie a clasp."
Considering my under-abundance of free time these days, that's probably a good idea. I'm glad there are four of them coming up over the summer... although if any of ya'll want to join me, we could totally book a private class ;). Warning: Class registration is easy. You might want to save up a bit for the cost of supplies. They're extra, and if you're like me, the sparkly things you look at never seem to leave you with more money in the bank.
As for the store itself, it's a pleasant place to peruse. There are beads of all shapes, sizes and materials and they come from all over the world. They also seem to be across a great many price points. From a few dollars to a few dozen dollars, handcrafting my own jewelry isn't going to be cheap. But boy, oh boy, picking it all out is going to be a lot of fun!
Next time you're in the 'hood (like this week... on or before Saturday), come visit Judith or Susan... or even Suzie herself. You're in capable and caring hands. I promise. And don't forget to pick up your class schedule. You can thank me by making me a bracelet. Or at least showing me a picture of what you made by uploading it to Suzie Q's biz listing and telling me it's there. You're welcome! -

I am not a jewelry maker, but have bought the majority of my Thomas Sabo pieces here. Some of the girls are a little bit space-cadety - I usually go in with no makeup and my sweats, and I think one of them assumed I couldn't afford a $300 charm based on a comment she made to me.
I like that you can keep a wish list in the store. They have almost all of the Thomas Sabo collection, and what they don't have, they will order for you. They have been very helpful whenever I've wanted to do a special order. It just takes a bit of time to get a piece back if it breaks and needs replacement. -

In 2002 Suzie Q Beads was born in a small house located only 3 blocks to the now bodacious and beaux spacious location that presently exists on 9th Avenue SE. This store is gorgeous, antique hardwood floors display glass cases of distinctive ready to wear jewellery, and bead selections from all over the world.
You can also enrol in over 70 beading and technique classes that are offered here, from the knotting between pearls, to the pairing of Swarovski and sterling silver.
Suzie Q is a very warm and welcoming spirit who loves beads, but as the store expands so does her specialization. Expect a new store name, Suzie Q Beads, Buttons and Bijoux. In fact if you are curious, and you are free this Friday the 23rd, come to a jewellery runway show to mark the store's reopening. Expect to be seduced by the bling of the beads and fine jazz crooning of Suzie Q herself.
So get your beady little eyes into Suzie Q Beads today. -
