Review from Chris P.
I was drawn into Sussman's by the pink Hello Kitty iPhone case I saw in the window. It was one of those moments where I was barreling up Queen St cause I had only a few minutes to spare before my manicure appointment and something in a store window caught my fancy and I just had to stop and take a closer look.
Yes I do have these moments a lot and they often make me late for my manicure appointments as well as other appointments. Sometimes I think that I have a lot in common with goldfish as we both only live in the moment.
ANYWAY, like I said I was drawn into Sussman's by the pink Hello Kitty iPhone case I saw in the window and once I got myself inside I found that Sussman's is a cool place indeed. There is just so much STUFF in there that it is overwhelming to the senses at first. They've got all kinds of fabric and findings and feather boas and beads and hair accessories and purses and tiaras. Its one of those stores that simply put has just about anything and everything so classifying it as a '(flll in the blank) kind of store'.is basically impossible.
They also have a Sussman's Bridal location which carries much of the abovementioned things just only for brides. I plan on bringing my soon-to-be-wed friend here to find that certain something for the signature finishing touch on her gown.
Since it is so packed you most likely will have to flag down a staff member and have her dig through the piles of stuff to unearth what it is you are looking for. Pretty much as soon as I walked in I was asked if I needed help to find something so it seems that the staff is aware that customers will need much assistance. -

Sussman's has 2 locations on Queen Street West (they are just a few doors apart) and they cater to the bridal niche but also carry lots of items for Hallowe'en, prom, semi-formals and even Gay Pride! They have a huge selection of ribbons, trims, zippers (in every shade and colour!), rhinestones, bows, silk flowers, feather boas, masks, feather wings, long gloves, tiaras and veils.
I've been shopping at Sussman's for easily over ten years now (I bought a tiara for my prom here a long time ago) and I still come here when I need something specific that Fabricland or Michael's doesn't carry. If they don't have what I'm looking for (which is rare), the staff will offer alternatives, or they can usually recommend another place for me to check out. The staff have sewing experience so they can offer knowledgeable tips on whatever you're making.
They do custom order bridal gowns as well (in the bridal boutique - if you see feather boas you're in the wrong Sussman's and should down a couple stores!) Prices are based on consultation and what the bride is looking for - but bear in mind that it is being custom created and will be at least double what a store-bought dress would cost, if not more.
If you're buying a lot of stuff you can try to bargain with the owner if you offer cash. If you're studying fashion/design they offer a student discount (10%) if you show your student card. There's also a designer discount for industry professionals but I'm not sure what the discount is.
