Food Quality & Presentation (15 out of 10) Yes really! 15 out of 10
Ambiance (9 out of 10) Easy-going
Service (10 out of 10) Conscientious and Friendly
Price (10 out of 10) Fair Market Rate
Venue (10 out of 10 ) Recently Expanded---Pleasing to the eye / Clean & Comfortable
Based on Yelp reviews, my daughter and I made a special trip after our shopping trip to Mountain Equipment CO-OP for some outdoor gear---a short drive away.
Both of us tried a broad range of Sushi Umi's menu items---Soup, Sushi, Sashimi and more. We were really hungry--and portion sizes were just right.
The freshness, quality and taste ---simply put---were second to none!
Sushi Umi's sushi chef / specialist was welcoming, approachable, friendly and was conscientious with every detail of the meal that was prepared for us. His efforts were commendable! The server was very knowledgeable and helpful when called upon for recommendations from the menu.
If you haven't yet been to Sushi Umi--plan to get over there as soon as you can!
Visitors to the National Capital Region will be happy to know that Sushi Umi is a ten minute drive from Parliament Hill and that it is located in one of Ottawa's pedestrian-friendly neighborhoods surrounded by trendy stores---a thriving community with a lively street scene. -

To begin, I'm going to have to rather strongly disagree with Mark Elliot's assessment of the ambience and venue. There's nothing horrible about it, but it's not appealing. It looks thrown-together and doesn't really have any unifying theme apart from trying to cover up what might be especially visually unappealing (like the breaker box and the closet full of miscellany in the bathroom). I felt especially nonplussed about the lighting; all of the fixtures I noticed had 3-4 sockets but only one light bulb in them.
That aside, the food was decent. I ordered almost all sushi, so I think that I got the better end of the deal. The roll I ordered (maybe the umi roll?) was good but nothing to knock your socks off. My mother ordered a special and was not impressed by the chicken teriyaki. There were a couple of other things about the food that I thought was off. For example, the pieces of fish on the sushi were a little large, and there was no sauce for dipping the gyoza.
Because of those issues, I'm not really sure we got our money's worth. I think that you might be able to make it worthwhile if you're going for sashimi (where big pieces of fish would potentially be a plus). The fish was fresh, but the entire experience unfortunately didn't really add up to what we paid. -

I felt liking eating sushi during my visit to Ottawa. I looked places up in Yelp and I decided on this one 'cause the decent reviews. I had the spider roll and the Boston roll. They weren't that tasty; the food was pretty much average, just enough to satisfy my craving.

The food is excellent and the chef is accomodating but the decor has lots of room for improvement.
Surprisingly there wasn't any plain hotate nigiri sushi on the menu only spicy but when we asked the chef....no problem. The result was excellent as was the rest of our order (spider roll, inari, unagi, salmon skin roll, spicy tuna, hamachi with green onion roll). The only one that could have used a little improvement was the saba nigiri sushi; the topping could have used a little grated lemon rind. -

Three words: live lobster sushi. it was a special order for a special occasion, but Chef Chris is no stranger to sushi delicacies (for the not-so-faint of heart, as the de-tailed crustacean waved its claws at us in protest). But even though Chris' kitchen skills are on par with big city chefs, you will not have to dig deep into your pockets to enjoy a meal at his joint. What you will get from Sushi Umi is consistently tasty sushi at a very reasonable price. True, the place is small, they don't serve bevvies, and service can be slow at times, but when your awesomely hot and spicy bowl of seafood miso soup arrives, and you dig in to your plate of Wellington rolls, you will find yourself coming back for more. Again. And again. And...

This neighbourhood is so lucky to have a sushi takeout and restaurant as good as Sushi Umi. Prices are great and the sushi is very good. The service is down home and friendly, and the restaurant is cozy and welcoming. It is reminiscent of a neighbourhood sushi restaurant you might see on Manhattan's Upper West Side, and it has the same quality and familiarity.

This tiny sushi bar offers great sushi and Japanese food. I've eaten there three times since they opened a few weeks ago, and I've been very pleased every time. Take-out is also available. Prices are quite reasonable for such tasty sushi.
The sushi rice is perfectly cooked, and the rolls are well-prepared and have always been filled with tasty and fresh ingredients.
Note that the restaurant only has four or five tables, so if you go at a busy time you might want to call ahead. Also, the service can be slow and inattentive, but if you ask for something you'll get it eventually.
Strongly recommended.
