Awesome roll, best in town, Sushi Town!!!!

Been going to this place since they opened and boy are they packed every night now.  If you never been here, you simply walk in and put your name/party size on the white board located on the host stand.

This place looks very typical to any average sushi joint around Vancouver.  Sometimes the air in they place does get a little stuffy and stale, but the Awesome roll is worth it! lol

Korean ran joint so don't expect to have a great traditional Japanese meal, but however a decent quality meal, large portions, at a great price!

Most non-Japanese sushi restaurants' food quality seem to depreciate over time, but over the years that I've been coming back here, it never when downhill.  Their pricing has always been great for the size and quality they serve.

Some of their rolls are quite large and sushi are 2-3x bigger than some places.  I usually order Awesome roll, Alaska roll, couple sushi, and spicy tuna.

I do suggest coming here with 2-4 people when you get a chance, so that you guys get to try out a few things on the menu.  Most of the time we only pay 10-15 bucks (after tax/tips), and we left very satisfied.  That's cheap!!!

Always busy, and if you eat there you'll understand why.

Great, fresh, tasty, sushi.  Big portions.  Tiny prices.

The menu of rolls is lengthly.  Try the Awesome role.

But absolutely don't miss the salmon sashimi.  Nine of the largest, thickest cuts of cold, fresh salmon, alone worth the wait.

Sushitown is a good place to go if you want fresh and an abundance of sashimi and/or other rolls.

I am very picky about my sashimi so I thought the sashimi COULD HAVE been better. The salmon was a bit too chewy/stringy, and the size of the rolls are a bit too big. The rice that wraps maki's were a bit on the soggy side.
The awesome roll was good, but had too much sauce and got soggy quickly.

The saba nigiri was so moist and fresh. :)

Wow, first stepping into the place, I felt a tad stuffy. It was REALLY REALLY hot and lacking oxygen. Anyways, after I sat down and took off my jacket we ordered. The waitress really doesn't speak English, but I can hear Korean being yelled across the establishment.

The atmosphere was typical lights, and it was PACKED by the time we started eating. We ordered some of their "special" rolls and a couple sushi nigiri, and their sashimi.

The price was decent for fairly made sushi. I wouldn't mind the price.

I really loved the nigiri. It was actually perfectly made, but it was a tad too big though. The rice was perfectly packed though and the fish slice was cut perfectly, but maybe they wanted it big to show off the size.

The sashimi was amazing though. The cuts were perfect, and it really made me very happy. VERY SATISFIED.

The special rolls, the taste was AMAZING. But the only thing was they broke very easily. I didn't like that though. It didn't give me an amazing touch, but for sure the taste was an EXPLOSION!! :D

I will go back maybe for take out, and then next time might order a party tray for a party with a bunch of friends.

What the crap?  $5.54 for a dinner that left me full?!  YES!

The inside isn't anything fancy, but it's clean.  The service was almost adequate, but I didn't feel irritated.  My veggie rolls were tasty and sized just right.  And the price, ohhh the price!  I am still recovering from the shock.

My pals ordered A LOT of sashimi and spicy tuna somethingorother and were also very pumped.

I was lucky enough to hitch a ride out here with a friend, but I would seriously consider the transit adventure next time.

Oh sushi town, you will always be my go-to place for stuffing myself with delicious, generous portions of raw fish.

This place isn't fancy.  It's cramped, it's loud, the waitresses aren't attentive...but it's so so good.  You don't come here for a slow, leisurely meal.  You come here to get full and go.

What I love about this place so much is the generous portions of meat and the excellent prices.  My boyfriend and I usually leave incredibly full for around $20.  Some of our usual picks:

-Sashimi & sushi combo ($8):  1 piece of salmon egg and 1 piece of chopped scallop sushi; 2 huge fat pieces of tuna sashimi, 2 fat pieces of salmon sashimi, plus 1 piece each of salmon/tuna/ebi sushi.  The nigiri sushi has a lot of rice-I usually pluck off about half of it so I don't get too full on filler.

-Alaska roll ($4):  I'll admit, there is a LOT of avocado in this.  They put a lot of avocado in all their rolls, so be careful if you're ordering a lot of rolls with avocado in them-I'd try to stick with just 1.  The sauce they drizzle on top is Japanese salad dressing, and it's delicious.

-Red roll ($5 I believe):  Chopped scallop on the inside, spicy tuna on the outside.  Great mix of sweet and spicy.

-Spicy Tuna Sashimi ($8):  Very generous portion, super spicy-although every once in awhile I get a piece of tuna that isn't completely thawed.

-Awesome roll ($8):  This roll used to live up to its name-stuffed with all kinds of meat and drizzled with 2 different sauces and a generous helping of fish flakes.  However the last few months, I've noticed when I order it that the base of the roll is really rice-heavy and usually sticks to the plate so the sushi falls apart when you pick it up.  Lately I've stopped ordering it.

I highly recommend take out for this place, especially if you have a big group.  I foolishly decided to go with a group of 10 for dinner one day and waited over an hour.  Usually when I go as a pair, I get seated very quickly-groups of 3+ often have to wait longer for bigger groups to pack up or single tables side by side to leave.

Cheap, decent sushi. That sums up what this place is all about. I've been here several times but after one incident, I'll never come back here again (let's just say it had to do with hygiene), if you want specifics, you can PM me.

Ambience (2/5) Nothing fancy, but I'm not a fan of places that put down really slippery tiles when it rains so much in Vancouver.

Food (3.5/5) Rating is relative to the pricing, so it's not the best Japanese food in town, but it's amazing value. The rolls are not expertly made and the sashimi isn't the freshest, but hey, for the price, can't really complain.

Service (2.5/5) Sometimes it is almost impossible to get your food in 15 minutes during the lunch rush and the servers run around like their headless chicken sometimes due to the onslaught of hungry eaters...Ahhhhhh!

Huge rolls!  Sometimes too much rice on the rolls, but hey, they are BIG!!  Large pieces of Nigiri and Sashimi.  Sometimes the service is a little flakey, but one time we were given free Miso Soup because we waited too long...but it actually wasnt long at all.  Other times our waitress is busy socializing with the chefs...but no free soup.  I come for the cheap food not the service or atmosphere.

The prices are the best on Hastings, but sometimes it does look like the rolls are thrown together.  This place gets very busy sometimes, so arrive early!

I remember during lunch hour in highschool (or on the occasion where I would skip class), my friends and I would often visit Sushi Town for some pretty good sushi.

My favourite used to be the spicy sashimi don, I think that's probably their most popular item on the menu. The food is not bad and the price is fair.

Their service however varies like crazy. Some days they don't even care that you're there and totally ignore you, but I think they hired more waitresses now so it's gotten a bit better.

They have also renovated since last year (I think?) and I still go here whenever I crave some simple and cheap Japanese food.

This place is a disgrace to mankind. Everything about this restaurant is just WRONG. The ambience can be described as loud, cramped and filled with cheapo folks looking for the "$34.50" deal. Talk about sickly huge portions, poor quality food with servers who can't understand English. I asked the waitress if they served "wild" salmon sashimi, she couldn't even comprehend. Her response was, "All salmon sashimi is raw". I'd like to give a big thanks to the sushi connoisseur for the 101 lesson. I chipped my tooth biting into the still frozen piece of tuna sashimi served and almost drown in the house salad as the lettuce was poorly drained and drenched in dressing. Luckily, I could wash it all down the water they used in the ebi sunomono...a word of advice to the chef, I believe the recipe calls for rice vinegar, not water. Also, my definition of spicy tuna is not ghastly chunks of frozen tuna drenched in Rooster brand hot sauce! This place stands for all the environmental problems we have today - overfishing, landfill sites filled with plastic bags and styrofoam containers, ozone depletion etc. etc. I say, "Be A Man" and shut this joint down.

Probably my favourite a la carte mid-range sushi restaurant - it's a step-up from ubiquitous 38-piece sushi combo for $8 joints all over Vancouver and below higher-end Japanese places.  Sushi Town (and Sushi Garden) are very popular places in this price point.

The servers could not be slower or more aloof.  Parking is hard to find and it's really in the middle of nowhere with a cramped dining room.  But the reason for the long lineups?  Portions are huge and prices are pretty reasonable.

Even if you gorge out and can pack away as much sushi as I can - you won't be spending more than what you'll pay at an AYCE sushi place and you get much higher quality food.

Sure, the sashimi won't be served at the correct temperatures and the maki isn't packed with the right pressure.  But you shouldn't expect it at this price point or from the assembly line of 6 sushi chefs of various Asian backgrounds with dubious training/skill.  But the ingredients are consistently fresh and the sashimi and roll pieces are monstrous.  It's close to SFU and you'll see a lot of value-minded students eating here.

It's a good formula of value, big portions and consistent quality so it ticks all the boxes for most Vancouverites - just don't expect gourmet career sushi chef quality.

With a name like Sushi Town I wasn't expecting much, but I was pleasantly surprised.  The service was quick, but friendly and our food came quickly.  I ordered the spicy tuna roll and the salmon maki roll.  I shared a yam tempura order as well.

The sushi was decent enough and definitely worth the price.  For my 2 rolls it was only $6 and the tempura was $6.50 for a plate.

The atmosphere was loud and very warm.  They had kept the door open for the cool autumn air to come in, but it wasn't doing much to lower the temperature.

This place has good eats for a very good price.  The only problem is that its in the middle of nowhere - there is nothing close by!  But, I will definitely be back again.

    SUSHI!

kinda near nowhere.. but this place is great!

huge portions and very reasonable prices!

went on a Sunday nite and it was fairly busy but we got a table right away.

sashimi is really good and BIG.. gyoza was great.. they have some specialty rolls such as the Red Roll which was good.. the chicken teriyaki was pretty standard.. the Alaska roll was my fave.. the one let down was the dynamite roll.. just not good at all, and too bad we had that last so its the last thing i tasted

service was incredibly bad.. you have to wave them down.. they don't ask for drinks.. refill water.. don't bring your bill.. don't check on you.. the only good thing is that in the beginning they take your order and the food comes out reasonably quick.. they had a full kitchen so they can crank out the food

Fast and cheap.  That's not a measure of sushi in my opinion.  Those are the key Sushi Town value propositions.

My normal lineup fell flat here.

Tuna - Horrible.  One bite and leave.  The cut was huge.  Giving me a lot of mushy tuna doesn't make up.  Sorry.  And there was so much rice, I considered asking for a to go container for it alone.

Salmon - Average.  A large cut.

Tobiko - Average.  I ordered it with a quail egg, but my waiter was having an off night.  I don't think it would have mattered that I got the egg.

    Raw scallop - Barely average.

Salmon Roe - Bad.  They must have stored it with the tuna, just mushy.

The miso soup was pretty good.  No spoon, so I drank it like tea.  I ordered an Asahi.  Whoever decided to call a beer that would be ordered in a Japanese restaurant something that rhymes with Sake has a devilish sense of humor.  I got me some Sake.  I sent that back and got my Asahi.

I don't know if this is good sushi for the area.  I do know that if I lived here, I'd keep searching after going to Sushi Town.

The sushi was cheap but I don't know about fast! There was a small wait for dinner for our party of four... and then it took awhile to order because when the first waitress came by, we barely had time to decide.

We ended up ordering the fried yam and prawn tempura (which was the BEST I've ever had by the way), tuna roll, and then the assorted sashimi plate and the deluxe assorted sushi.

My bf and I had the ikura and roll for dessert, hahaha, not really dessert but that was the icing on the cake FOR SURE. We weren't full from the raw fish because there was barely any rice so I wanted a hand roll and I was soooo impressed. The ikura was DELICIOUS, I love the way it pops in my mouth when I bite into the roe. And they give you so much ikura in the roll, it was AMAZING. I raved about it to my friends for at least five minutes. I could not get over how cheap and great it was.

Despite the slow service at this place, I would definitely come back becase the quality of fish was just THAT GOOD. Sashimi pretty much melted in my mouth. Service was so-so, they only refilled us with tea once and ignored us after that. They messed up our order once and then forgot our last order of rolls.... OH well.

I don't think anyone would argue that it is difficult to begin to find a good Japanese restaurant in Metro Vancouver.  It's not because there aren't any good Japanese restaurants in town.  It's because there are so many Japanese restaurants here - so many to the point that one can worry about the sustainability of fish stock in the oceans.

Sustainability aside ... I've been to this restaurant twice and I find the quality good and the portion of the dishes very worth the price.  I went there with my parents and ordered salmon sashimi, toro sashimi, and 2 sushi rolls.  The total was less than $30.  The sashimi slices were thick and of good quality.  Each dish came with 6 thick slices for $11.  The rolls were slightly disappointing with the end pieces falling apart and the rice slightly warm.

This is the place to go if you want a good satisfactory meal.  Go before the typical meal hours to avoid long lines.

Large portions, relatively fresh ingredients, and horrible service - like everything in life, it's a trade off.

Food: It's hard to screw up sushi and this place does it decent. Large portions is what keeps me coming back.
    i.Heart: Red roll.

Service: If I need how to say horrible in Japanese, I would enter it here. Nonetheless, they do get some cred for the vast improvement in their staff's waiting skills and quick service.

Ambiance: A-OK. Nothing special but they did a reno and it looks decent+1.

If it hadn't been for a recommendation from a friend (Nina H. down below!) and a trusty GPS, we would've never found this place! Tucked away on a seemingly random street on the outskirts of Vancouver, Sushi Town is a haven for fresh sushi and traditional Japanese food. I imagine there's typically a long wait for this joint, but we were lucky enough to slide into a four-person table even though we were a party of two. Suckas!

There is certainly fresh fish here -- my favorite being the toro -- with large portions to be had as well. Our eyes were definitely bigger than our stomachs that night as we ordered miso soup, agedashi tofu, assorted sashimi, a spicy scallop roll, AND Asahi beer for the meal. The food was worth the long wait though. Honestly, I should've been rolled out of the restaurant with the amount I ate here. I could barely move when we were done eating.

Expect to wait a while for your food to be served. And expect to be carried out on a stretcher once you're done eating.

This is one of my favorite places if I just want to go for decent price alacarte sushi instead of AYCE.  Don't get me wrong this place  isn't comparable to the BEST sushi restaurants in Vancouver.  The quality of the sushi is ok, but waaaay better than anything in Surrey!  So Its probably one of the best korean-owned sushi restaurants. Mainly we come here if I have a craving to my two favorite things to order.
The portions are well worth the price.   I always order the spicy tuna sashimi.  To me it's the best spicy tuna sashimi I have ever had.  But I'm still on the prowl for a place just as good or better.  I always get half an order for me and my husband to share and it's still plenty for us.
Another must have favorite of mine is their AWESOME roll.  It's like a California roll with seared salmon, masago and basically takoyaki toppings- bonito flakes, mayo and a special sauce.
My kids love this place too.  They love the chicken teriyaki that is served on a hot plate over vegetables.  And my older son loves their unagi don.  Sometimes he'll have the unagi nigiri.  And it's the biggest cuts of unagi that I have ever seen especially for the price.
Actually I like this location more than the coquitlam location.  For some reason I think it tastes better.  But since I live in surrey the coquitlam location is closer and they have takoyaki.
The service isn't the best.  But I don't go their for the service.  It's one of those Asain restaurants where you sometimes need to get their attention in order to get noticed.  But that hasn't stopped me from going back since I first tried it back in 2007.

    What happened?

I LOVED this hidden gem when I used to live around their restaurant.
I loved their restaurant so much that every time people asked me about any good Japanese/ sushi restaurants, I told them to go to Sushi town.

I thought their nigiri sushi are best.....until this month.

Their spicy tuna was FROZEN!!! Oh my god I couldn't believe it... well... more like I didn't want to believe that's frozen!! It sadden me so bad. I know the chefs were not Japanese but as long as they use Japanese name/ menu and run the restaurant, they need to respect and try at least to be serving like one.

Their nigiri, the rice part, was awful as well as they looked all like the ones that amateur sushi makers gripped rice. The shape of rice part in nigiri should not have shaped like the stone you would pick from the street.

Their sashimi (fish part) was good though....I wouldn't go back there. It is sad to say that but time goes on. Now it is time for me to find a good sushi place.

Won't you take me to... Sushi Town?

I was delighted to discover this little gem just blocks from my new place when we moved to North Burnaby last September. I was saddened by the thought of leaving the handful of cheap sushi joints on the Drive, but quickly became a regular st his little hole in the wall. Nestled between a M&M Meat Shop and a a Chinese take out joint, I wondered why there was a line-up outside. I soon learned the truth. This is some of the best sushi I've had in town. and cheap, to boot!

You can't beat the combo Tuna and Salon sashimi - always fresh and a generous portion. The miso soup is not overly salty like most places and is chock full of tofu. The Spicy Tuna is actually spicy and my favorite thing on the menu. I've had almost every roll on the menu and each was amazing.

We use the take-out service regularly. The orders are always perfectly packed and we can usually pick up in 20 minutes. The staff is awesome and very helpful with recommendations.

If you are looking for great sushi in Burnaby, you've found it here.

This place is awesome! I would come here if I wanted some good sushi. The Burnaby location is packed all the time though! Service is horrible, and the sashimi (if you don't get there at a good time) isn't always cold. But their food tastes delicious! I love their Alaska roll, Awesome roll, Spicy Salmon sashimi, Tonkatsu dinner, Spicy Chopped Scallop roll and many others! They also cut very decent slices of sashimi!

Even if you've heard negative things about Sushi Town, I think you have to try it for yourself to find out. You might reconsider because it tastes sooooo good!

Went there today (Thursday evening, raining) and the place was bustling busy. We did not wait long at all for seating. We ordered Yam & Prawn Tempura, a sashimi platter, gyoza and a sushi assortment. Except for the gyoza, every item arrived within a reasonable time. The gyoza, which is often an appetizer and should appear first, came last. However, the quality of the food and presentation makes up for it as well as the prompt service. Prices are very reasonable too.

Do not go to this restaurant.  Sushi town is the worst food I have had in years - since the last time I ordered from Sushi Town.  Here we go...

So I live in Burnaby, go to school at SFU, and love sushi.  This restaurant is the closest sushi restaurant to me by far.  Usually I go to Take sushi (also in Burnaby), and it is amazing; a solid 4.5 star affair everytime.  So 2 years ago, when I first moved to my current apartment, I decided to order takeout at sushitown.  I got the standard California roll combo, with tuna roll, salmon roll, dynamite roll, etc. - the standards.  It was so bad I actually threw out the entire order after trying each thing once. Nothing was edible; and I'm a poor student, who doesn't believe in wasting food; so to throw it all out for me is signifcant.

So 2 years later now, I decide to try it again.  I mean, the place is always chock full of asian people, and you know the rule of thumb: if you go to an ethnic rest. and the majority of persons in it are of the same ethnicity of the food, you can be pretty confident the food is a good version of that ethnic food.  So I decided to try eating in this time.  Big mistake.  The food is simply inedible.  California roll: all you can taste is warm mayo. Salmon and tuna roll; both warm, and slightly slimy or sticky.  I am going to shit (literally) if I get food poisoning from this place.  The dynamite roll: the tempura around the prawn is soft and tastes awful; and the roll is so big that it falls apart everytime you pick it up; immediately I decided it wasn't worth the effort so just left it.

And that is what happened with the rest of the meal: I just left it.  I forced my way through 50%, then conceded I lost when I initially walked into the restaurant, and so just sucked it up and left the rest.  But I swore I would help others avoid my fate.

Finally, the food is not cheaply priced. $10 for my meal above.  I swear to god I would not pay $4 for what I had.  Perhaps $2... is the amount I would accept from Sushi Town to eat their meal.  I feel ill thinking of the sickly mayo taste permeating the whole meal...

To conclude: do not go to Sushi Town.  Check out Take Sushi instead; for 20% higher prices, you get 100% better food.  You owe it to yourself to not spend your hard-earned cash on garbage.

Oh my...  fellow yelpers, forgive me that I have forgotten to tell you how good this place is! I know it's not exactly the easiest location to get to but believe it it is worth it. As I officially sat on the back seat of my boyfriend's motorcycle for the first time.. I wondered if I was going to die and if this ride was going to be worth it.... because yes, I am a wee bit of a chicken.
However, I am still alive and the ride was sooo worth it. Luckily on a Sunday night, there was no lineup at 7:30pm and our table of 7 ordered a variety of food to satisfy everyone's appetites. Gyoza, giant pieces of salmon sashimi, awesome roll was oh so awesome, spicy tuna was FREAKING SPICY that I couldn't eat it (at least it lived up to its potential)..... and more rolls I cannot remember.... but what I do remember was that after eating to the point where I could not eat anymore... the bill came to $10 per person!

I don't think you will find a better bang for your buck. The sushi is awesome and so inexpensive for the amount of food you get. The ingredients are fresh because there are always so many people dining there. The only drawback is that it's always busy, even at lunch, even on a Sunday night. Try going a bit early or a bit later, or do the take out.

This is a great spot for anyone who is looking for generous portions of food and not really worried about customer service.  Price is very reasonable.

We have been to Sushi Town since the beginning and still goes there almost every week.  We have gone from eating in the restaurant to ordering take-outs since the restaurant is really tiny and there's always a lot of people wanting to eat there.

Always packed with people + not enough waiters & waitresses = not a lot of time for individual tables.  That means you may not get your tea refilled at times and them forgetting to get you another chop-sticks, etc.  However, I'm mainly there for the food, not the service...and I love the food.

This is one of the best sushi places in Burnaby. Get the spicy tuna combo, you will not be sorry.

    LOVE this place.
sooo good. :D and great price

im from the US... and all i can say is that sushi here is much cheaper, fresher and yummier :P

we ordered party B, salmon don, 2 udon (1 tempura and 1 seafood)-- and it was enough for 7 people (2 of them were big eaters... so probably more like 10 people :P)

we came again and ordered party C with salmon don and unagi don-- enough for 7 people (once again, 2 big eaters! so most like 9-10 people worth of food)

all i can say is that the salmon don is worth $9 for the amount of salmon sashimi it gives. && the party platters are wonderful (they are big and deliciouso! :P)

This is the original location out of three and has been quite consistent with quality and portion size, which by the way is large! Has all your basic Japanese dishes as well as some interesting rolls such as the awesome roll and red dragon roll. The dynamite combo and the sushi/sashimi combo is a favorite. Always fresh due to the sheer volume of customers that come here. Great for a sushi fix and reasonably priced too BUT be prepared to wait for your order as they sometimes forget to place it and the service is hit and miss otherwise it's a no frills kinda place to eat... You get what you pay for!!

Great food, Great price, can't complain. I've been to many sushi places before and this one hits the perfect sweet spot of good food at good prices. The alaska roll and dynamite rolls are great, the nigiri pieces are big and fresh. It can get quite busy, so you may have to wait a few minutes.
