Review from Mark H.
Morgue sushi never tasted so good.
So supposedly this used to be a funeral home which might creep out some people. I think it gives it more character.
Korean-owned, the service is great, prices are bang on, and quality is above your average sushi joint. We started with house-made gyozas (good stuff), and ordered a bunch of rolls. The one with the mango had a wicked sauce of some sorts drizzled on it.
If I was a ghost, I'd chow down here. -

The restaurant is in a nice heritage building. It continues being nice, as long as you think of it as a heritage building and not for the funeral home it used to be. I may just be a bit squeamish. Let that not deter you from a place that offers well-presented sushi for a bargain price. Usually cheap sushi is fairly inedible, but this place does it extremely well.
We went here for my friend's birthday. The prices are extremely reasonable and the food is good, I personally believe its the best deal for sushi in the metrotown area.
I got the unagi cone, chopped scallop roll, and a piece of tuna tataki nigiri. Never tried seared sushi? You are missing out!!! It was my favorite kind of sushi in Japan.
Service was average. Long after the meal no one came to clear the plates so we did it ourselves to clear room for the birthday cake, then had get up and chase down a waitress a few times to get plates and cutlery. It's one of those places with typical Asian service. At least the food was good!!! -

I wish I could live in this restaurant, like really live in it, as a home. This heritage building is absolutely beautiful. It's a little strange that It ended up becoming a Japanese restaurant, but at least its going to good use!
This Sushi joint is great! They have a large selection of specialty rolls which I'm sure taste great. I would have tried them all, but I would probably be in a hospital in a comatose state at this moment. I guess I just have to visit again and often. I wouldn't recommend ordering the forest roll though, its kind of strange. It's a vegetarian roll with various mushrooms and greens. Tastes strange, but a lot vegetarian dishes taste strange to me, I love my meat. Definitely requires a lot of soy sauce.
Service was ok, somewhat a little lacking but I've learned not to expect too much from Asian joints. In fact I would have to say that service was exceptional if you consider Asian restaurants in a whole class of their own, not comparing them to western standards ha.

Review from Mike P.
For such an impressive location I was somewhat unimpressed by this place. Food is average, prices were average, we went here due to the huge lineup at Sushi Garden down the street (not entirely sure what that is all about).
The restaurant was pretty busy so the service was a little slow.
If I was again in the neighbourhood craving sushi I wouldn't be afraid to come back here, but I'd also be just as likely to try another place that I hadn't been to before. -

oyama is like a staple in my diet. after trying other sushi places, i always conclude there's no point in going anywhere else but here. the fish is always fresh, portions are large, and the price is fair. a downside is some of the special rolls are too big to fit in my mouth (lol?), and i'm not sure how authentic larger than life sushi is, but it doesn't matter so much to me. i enjoy getting a lot for my dollar.
do not skip the red roll. if you enjoy spice, the spicy tuna/salmon is legit spicy and the sauce actually covers all the fish inside (some places just put a glob of weird "spicy" sauce on top of the fish or roll, which i think is gross). the temaki (cones) are a good value and they don't skimp on the fish whatsoever. the takoyaki appetizer is good and cures the craving (although i think better can be found at the night markets). the sushi pizza is tasty, but it is definitely something you try once 'cause you and your friends are curious. i've never had any other non-sushi items since every time i go here i just stick with the fish, but from what i've seen other people order, the other foods look great as well.
also uhh not sure what that other reviewer meant but i've never felt any racism from anywhere when dining here. the staff is friendly and attentive - as long as you don't sit on the balcony. do avoid the balcony or else prepare to be forgotten. :( -

Sushi Oyama has redeemed itself on the most recent take-out order. I think it's the better ones in the Korean-run Japanese restaurant niche. I continue to be a fan.

We went to Oyama hoping for the best, but it just didn't cut it for us. My daughter felt the uncomfortable feeling of racism. She says it wasn't from the service, but from other customers staring and pointing in our direction. I had the feeling That we weren't wanted there by the staff. Not that anyone was rude or mean, it was just cold.
The food isn't much to write about either. The tempura was very greasy, the gomae was gritty, and for the first time ever I did not finish what I ordered in a sushi/Japanese restaurant.
The decor is very nice and the bathroom is nice and clean. -

I went here with a group of friends a while back and I had a lovely time. I love the atmosphere, especially downstairs. We were seated upstairs which was still kinda cool. We ordered loads and I don't remember one thing we didn't like. The servers were sweet, we got our food quickly. When ours came back she seems very surprised that we devoured our first round so quickly. Never under estimate the appetites of a bunch of young adults after a long day of laser tagging. I think their dynamite roll was especially good, more flavour than most places and the tempura was actually warm *gasp.* I would love to come here again!

I was a bit weary of trying this place since it used to be a morgue! Yea, you read right.. a morgue. After the morgue, it was turned into a Korean restaurant and now it's a Japanese restaurant.
I was suprised at how fresh the sushi and sashimi were. The portions and pieces were huge and their specialty rolls were tasty. The best part is probably the price. For the amount of food you get, the price is a steal!
Oyama doesn't have all the wierd and rare types of sashimi but it has all the staples. This is my 5th time eating at Oyama and it hasn't disappointed me once. Cross my fingers and hope that doesn't change.Listed in: Cheap Eats in Burnaby, Best Japanese

I love japanese food. The one thing I was really impressed about was the Ebi Sunomono! In other restaurants, they charge the same price ($3.50) for half the size. Oyama has large servings for a reasonable price, and friendly, albiet slow, staff.
They recently added a dessert menu. You can never go wrong with the green tea ice cream.
My favourite things to order? Red roll (chopped scallop roll with spicy tuna on top, 8 pieces for about $7.50), chopped scallop roll, tempura udon ($6.00 for a huge bowl!) sushi pizza ($9) and salmon sashimi don (about $7).
Ambience is nice and cozy. Good for large parties as well. Although the staff can over look you sometimes, the price and the quality of the sushi keeps me coming back for more! -

My 100th review!
I've been here a couple of times. Food is pretty decent. I would say it's on par with that other sushi place nearby, let's call it SG. Price is comparable as well. Rolls wise, SG might have an edge but only a minute one. Free Parking around the area is kind of tough to find. Go around 8 and there's plenty of free parking and still no lineups. This place is popular enough that it's usually about 80% full, but not popular enough that I've had to wait longer than 10min for a table. Don't get me wrong I like SG, but I always end up here because I don't like waiting like a chump, when the food and price here are on par. Funeral home or not, the inside is nice enough that the past is soon forgotten.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Review from Shannon B.
Coquitlam, BC
A friend suggested this place as a possible dinner destination last week so we decided to go check it out and see if t was any good.
Sushi Oyama is in a strange building that looks like an old mansion with a big yard and a wrap around balcony. The decor inside was just as neat and I felt like I was eating dinner i someone's house rather than a Japanese restaurant. As I usually do with any new sushi joint, I decided to play it safe and order the California combo. The food was decent, although nothing amazing, but everything is very well priced. Service was good even though a few of the waitresses appeared to be in training. There were fruit flies trying to get all up in my sushi the whole time I was eating which was super annoying and the diffinitive deal breaker.
I would not go out of my way to go back here, but it's not too bad. -

I am always a big fan of Japanese food.
They serve good cold appi dishes, amazingly good and fresh sashimi, and great prices too.
their food tend to be more of a Japanese traditional type, instead of some diverts into fusion.
altho sometimes there's gonna be a wait time, but not usually long waits
I live all the way across from town, and I always travel there for great food. -

Food just as good second time around.
I highly recommend eating on the wrap-around balcony, so cool.
Just make sure you go into the mansion first and let them know you are there. Sat out there at least 5 minutes before anyone came up to me. That ticked me off a little bit.
Oh yeah, the bathrooms are so cool, of course I can only speak of the women's but they have those great sinks like they have on the HGTV Home decorating shows, love those sinks.
Anyway, back to the food, it was pretty darn good once again.
No complaints on this end.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I got a flyer in the mail from them and the menu actually looked really good, but when I realized where this was, i tossed the menu in the trash.
Why? Because i can't eat in an old funeral home.
Sure, that was ages ago, and several other restaurants have been in that same building since, but I can't do it. it just creeps me the F out.
Would love to try them if they ever move to a different location though. -
Review from Janice F.
Surpisingly fresh, good quality sushi in a hard-to-notice location on Kingsway. It's the restaurant that looks like a house that used to be a Korean restaurant and also has a sketchy karaoke joint in the basement. Luckily the restaurant is upstairs and actually is rather nice & classy.
Some unique items on the menu, like sushi pizza - crispy rice topped with spicy tuna and mayonnaise.
All the sashimi pieces were good quality and sized. Reasonably priced special rolls, I enjoyed the Mangodise roll. Good value at 8 pieces, crab mango and cucumber topped with ebi and mayo. Nicely presented. I didn't try it but the tempura looked quite good - really large pieces of prawns. I'll be back - this could be my regular sushi joint in Burnaby from now on.Listed in: Restaurants worth a second…

Been here twice over the summer.
First time - invited there for dinner by family friends. They were busy and seemed to still have a grand opening discount going on. Service was slow but I found the food enjoyable. I enjoyed the sashimi platter and portion size was decent. We tried their special sushi on the menu, created by their own chef and it was good.
Second time - I went at an earlier dinner time so service was faster. I went there on my own as I just had a sushi craving. The second time around, the sushi wasn't as good as the first time though. It is disappointing for me when restaurants can't keep up their quality of the foods or ingredients.
Unfortunately, it doesn't make my regular restaurants list as it doesn't meet my standard when the food quality is not consistent. I think this place is reasonably priced though... it is just NOT a to die for place and it wouldn't be my top choice for Japanese restaurants.
However, if I was in the area and my friends wanted a place for Japanese foods and a nice place to to catch up, I may visit again. The restaurant is more spacious with booth options and has nicer decor than the some of Japanese food joints in the area. -

Review from Shen S.
came here upon a friend's recommendation!
we ordered four rolls for four of us to share (it was quite filling!)..the red and black dragon rolls were definitely the highlights of our dinner! there were so many rolls on the menu that i still want to try! the place is like a house turned into a restaurant the ambience is quite nice but the service did not match up to the nice interior of the restaurant!
we specifically asked the waitress to split our bills before we ordered (took an extra 5-10 minutes to make sure she wrote it down right) and when our bill showed up it wasn't divided like she said she would. In addition, they did not refill our tea a single time while we were there (we dined in for a good 1-2 hrs)
so overall food is excellent, but really need to train their waitresses better!
there's free parking available in the plaza behind the restaurant and plenty of free street parking! -
Review from Kurosan S.
I live in SoCal, land of many many sushi places and Sushi Oyama is cut above all but the most high-end (and most expensive). The fish is very fresh, the rolls are great, the sashimi was excellent, and the prices are very reasonable.
It was very busy when we were there but service was reasonably fast considering the crowd. The staff were very friendly and didn't seem to mind the all noise from the three kids we brought with us.
I wish this place was somewhere near me, I'd definitely be a regular. 4 1/2 stars. -

This place is pretty cool. It has a great look and feel, and the food isn't too bad either. I have been here a few times now and the food has varied..sometimes its amazing other times it has just been okay.
One thing does stay consistent though- poor service. The servers do not check up on you and forget to bring things that you may ask for. Washrooms are really small and tend to be a little messy.
Overall this place is an interesting place and I would go back for the food. -

Gotta say great sushi for a good price. Went here twice when I came back to visit Vancouver BC and it was great. They had a lot of interesting rolls that I have never seen before. I would recommend the Las Vegas roll and the red roll they were pretty good. I think we ordered like 7 rolls + some other dishes, and it came out to only be around 50 bucks. Ended up picking up the tab myself, my friends were upset.

this place used to be a funeral home? who would of thought the dead would taste so good! the beef teriyaki plate was alright, but the sushi here are top notch. best sushi ive ever tasted (im from seattle and all the sushi i tried blows compare to this place).
i loved the atmosphere, upon walking up the stairs, i noticed there's some round stones to walk on and one time when it was raining, my friend missed the stone and his pants and shoes got soaked. anyways, so we entered, we waited to be greeted and i saw the waterfall window and i thought wow that's pretty nice, it must resemble of all the tears people have cried at this place. the service wasn't so good, but who could blame them.. japan had a terrible disaster at the time. i bid farewell to the sushi masters as they looked at me like a weird foreigner... i'll be back.
i wish sushi were this good and cheap in seattle.. PLEASE BRANCH DOWN HERE AND DOMINATE ALL THE OVERPRICED AND DISGUSTING SUSHI IN SEATTLE!! -
Review from Kal B.
dine in for this place is decent.. great food, good prices, great portion size.. no service but thats not too different from most sushi places
had a TERRIBLE take out experience though hence the 1 star!
called ahead to order.. they said 15 min which i gave them.. get there and it was a bit of a crowded entry way (lunch crowd). she rang up a couple people.. i checked in and she actually walked right to the pick up counter, looked at some stuff and walked into the dining room and looked at some stuff and then said 'oh its not ready it but will be soon'.
i first sensed something wrong when i saw there was another lady waiting for her takeout order as well looking a lil' out of sorts.. she was pissed but u could tell she was pretty nice so she didn't flip out. a long line had formed of people wanting to pay for their bills from the dining room. a lot of people were also waiting to be seated. i saw the lady actually go herself and get her own food from the pick up counter and line up in the line and pay for her food. it turns out it had been ready for a while and looked like she had been waiting for a super long time (she realized this and took matters into her own hands).. she also questioned the freshness cuz we're talking raw fish sitting out on the counter for over 30 min.
the 'host' who was basically responsible for ringing everyone up, seating customers and doing take out orders.. proceeded to ring everybody up and seat everybody waiting including all the people that came after me. so i basically stood there watching all of this for about 40-45 min. so it had now been about an hour since I had originally called.
now this is the climax of this little tale and the clincher.. she walks back to the exact same spot she originally had when I first came in to the exact same styrofoam container that had been there in the first place and says 'your order is ready". and i saw everything go down cuz mind you i had nothing else to do.
let's just say i was pretty mad at that point (insert expletives here)! my food had been sitting there for close to an hour and been ready this whole time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it woulda taken her 2 min to ring me up and get me on my way but she actually chose to serve everybody else first. she had a good look at it the first time too so i knew it wasn't a mistake (especially since there were only 2 styrofoam containers.. i actually thought mine wasn't ready yet cuz she looked carefully at this same container earlier.. i thought maybe orders were placed on another counter on the side in the dining room which is why she went there earlier.. it was really just to see what tables were free so she could see patrons waiting for certain table sizes). i think also fuelled by what i saw happen to the earlier take out lady who suffered the same thing in quiet agony, it made me even more angry.. especially since the question of freshness came in to call.. we ARE dealing with sushi here! i never do this but after that sad display i said forget it, i'm not taking that and just cancelled my order. luckily sushi garden is just a few blocks away and i was able to get my order promptly. fortunately i wasn't super hungry through this whole ordeal!
the entire experience was ridiculous! and no apologies or remorse shown by the server just sent it over the top. the restaurant i think definitely needs to staff more to help up front or expedite the whole process cuz they are definitely booming busy especially around meal times.
this happened a while ago now ahead of me writing this review.. and even the day of, although i was extremely dissatisfied, i still believed the first line of this review holds true.. i wud come back for the dining in experience ONE day (i've gotten over it.. lol.. especially since the food is soooo good), but take out is definitely not an option!1 Previous Review: Show all »

Review from Will W.
Burnaby, BC
Great looking house from the outside and we were greeted by one of the staff right on the steps leading up to the door.
We were seated right away and took a look at the menu. They have the usual suspects for a Japanese restaurant and we both went for the chirashi don which is basically sashimi in a bowl. For those who don't know, this is quite often the best value for both selection and quantity.
Unfortunately our food was not as good as expected. We already have a few places on our list for great sushi and you might think fish is fish is fish... well, this was proof that that is not the case. Maybe it was a day too old or the cuts were poor but this was not good.
Just looking at the Taco (squid) you knew the chef did not know how to cut it or was using a dull hack saw to rip it apart. That image sort of summed up the food.
We'll keep looking for a better Japanese joint in the metrotown area.
