I'm hooked.  Every-time I eat sushi somewhere else in SF, I regret it now.  Sounds crazy: sushi in Little Italy but love love love.

The fish here is fresh - yellow tail is super yum.

    Favorites in this order:
    (1) Hamachi Toro (yellowtail belly) and Hamachi
    (2) Otoro (tuna belly)
    (3) Seaweed salad
    (4) Unagi (generous and always warm)
    *(5) Spicy crunchy tuna roll
*(6) Spicy Hotate (spicy scallop roll)
    *(7) Dragon Roll
    (8) Maguro Poke (Spicy Hawaiian style tuna)
    (9) Kampyo (Japanese sweet squash)
    (10) California (real crab roll only $5)

They don't try to fill you up on rice, but actually give you what you pay for.

Note: I usually leave stuffed ordering four of any of the above.

    Also have happy hour.
    *generous rolls

Will have to come back but for now 3 stars:
As a dine-in option, this place is lacking the ambiance. There are so many more interesting/or authentic/or cute places to go to in SF, so why come here? My friend and I opted for a take-out lunch.

I got the seafood lunch combo, which has listed: California Roll, Tuna Sashimi, Salmon Teriyaki, Shrimp and Vegetable Tempura with Miso Soup. I was looking forward to the sashimi and salmon teriyaki the most. Instead, it seemed like most of the volume was taken up by a ridiculous amount of rice underneath the salmon. The fish were both good though.

The california roll was very meh and I don't personally care for miso soup. You do get a lot of food but in the end I found myself wishing I had just ordered sashimi for a lighter but more delicious and similarly priced meal.

I would go back for sashimi though since it seems pretty decently priced here!

Customers ordering omakase style expect the chef to be innovative and surprising in the selection of dishes, and the meal can be likened to an artistic performance by the chef. Unfortunately this was not the case. I had gotten a groupon for this place, it offered an Omakase meal that looked quite exciting. Here is what we got...

First course was Miso soup-it was good-it was miso soup.
Second Course-Sashimi salad-it was ok, not much special about it.
    Third-tempura calamari-it was fried squid-it was ok.
Fourth-cow tongue with unagi sauce-it was ok
    Fifth-GRILLED squid-huh? Another squid dish.
(at this point I'm beginning to think Omakase means give me what you have left)
We did point out that we had had enough squid and two back to back squid dishes were disappointing. They replaced the squid with tempura veggies and some shrimp-which was ok, yet another tempura dish. The Chef was nice and the staff was nice to replace the dish and acknowledge our point)
Sixth-Grilled sea bass-this was the best dish of the night-it was pretty good
    Desert was ok, nothing special.

So overall it left me Meh...I have defiantly had better-much better and for SURE better Omakase meals else where. I really hope this wasn't the chefs best artistic offers or innovative cuisine. It was standard fair-kind of boring-very mediocre..

This is not somewhere I would come back to and I eat a lot of sushi and am always looking for the place! There are three places that stick out in my head as "the place". This isn't one of them unfortunately.

Been here many times; coming back this time with a Groupon: "for $29, you get a Taste of the East omakase dinner meal for two at Sushi On North Beach - Katsu (a $58 value)."

    Soup: regular miso.
Salad: a few pieces of sashimi on top of a salad with a wasabi vinaigrette
    Appetizer: tempura, shared
Sushi and Sashimi: chef's choice... turned out to be tuna, salmon, white tuna, and something I couldn't identify and didn't eat
Fried or steamed dish: Beef tongue
Grilled dish: Calamari, and the entree was seabass on top of rice
Dessert: homemade wine snow ice (GROSS)

All in all, I would've had a better deal if I could spend the $58 on rolls.  Skip the cooked dishes in the future.

Went here to use a Groupon for a seven course prix fixe menu so we didn't get a choice in what we ate but what we were served didn't disappoint and was so varied that I feel I really got a good idea of their entire menu.

    1. Miso soup with enoki musrooms
    2. Ahi tuna salad with avocado and cucumbers
    3. Grilled seabass - I've had better (that's what she said)
    4. Beef tongue teriyaki - scary sounding for us at first but it was sooo tender and delicious, I recommend!
    5. Various sashimis
    6. Tempura assortment
    7. Plum wine sorbet - I'm not much of a sorbet person but it was pretty tasty

We decided to go big and also order the green tea tempura ice cream - great decision! I'm a sucker for fried ice cream (or pretty much fried anything).

Service was great, very polite and accommodating, and they're good about keeping the sake coming!

I'm always looking for a good katsu curry so when I come back I'm definitely trying that out.

We got a groupon for this place and decided to check it out. It was pretty crowded in a Monday night at 730 and we had to wait a bit for a table.

The groupon was for the omakaze. We wound up getting miso, sashimi salad, sashimi, nigiri, grilled beef tongue (a first for me and surprisingly good), grilled sea bass and green tea ice cream.

Everything was very good. Highlights we're the salmon sashimi which was amazingly buttery and the butterfish which was, well, also buttery.

The grilled beef tongue was pretty good once I got past the thought that I was basically making out with a cow. I wound up finishing all of it.

Service was kind of slow but the place was packed. The groupon made everything an amazing deal, without it prices would still be reasonable.

This is definitely a solid sushi joint and should be in the regular rotation of restaurants to visit.

I had a groupon to use for my first meal here, so this review reflects that experience.  First, there wer e about 6 courses for the groupon meal which was quite generous.  Yet through all the food, I was not blown away by anything -- especially when they brought out the beef tongue.  Yum, really?  The atmosphere is bland as was the extra sushi roll we ordered.  Nothing truly offensive, but no reason to come back here.

Wow...surprisingly good. For some reason, I just didn't think it was possible for North Beach to have good Japanese food. I mean...the Italian food isn't even that good in the area. Anyway, I came here with a friend, who is a frequent patron. He knew exactly what to order.

+ Foie gras on scallops - amazing, but anything with foie gras is amazing
+ the salmon & hamachi toro (yellow-tail belly) nigiri - both types of fish were fatty and fresh. melted in my mouth
+ ama ebi (raw shrimp) - yummmmy; my second time having it...I think I'm going to get it reguarly now.
+ hamachi kama (yellowtail collar) - good if you like fried fish; I'm not a huge fan, but it wasn't overly fried, which I appreciated

I forget which roll we got...I think the crispy, spicy tuna. It wasn't creative or unique, but I still enjoyed eating it all.

This place isn't cheap, but not exorbitantly priced. The ambiance was lacking, but the waitress was nice.

FAIL!!!!  The sushi was sloppy, unfresh fish, and not tasty.  The sashimi was low grade, and not fresh.  I paid extra for the seared sea bass instead of the salmon, and it was like eating fish covered in maple syrup.  It was disgusting.

People should know better than going to a Japanese restaurant in North Beach.  North Beach is known for their Chinese, Italian, and Seafood restaurants.  We were just craving for Japanese and didn't want to walk far.  Oops!!!

I'm usually not terribly fond of sushi as the idea of something raw and slimy sliding down my throat is violently unpleasant for me. This sushi place--Sushi on North Beach Katsu--makes me regret that sentiment. My date and I trekked the hills of San Francisco on a Groupon-induced whim, and ended up on a romantic block in North Beach filled with bistros illuminated by tiny sparkling lights.

Our Katsu experience was seven courses and began with miso soup, perfect and salty with fairy mushrooms. Next came a ginger and tuna salad (spicy with such rich, buttery fish), followed by a sashimi sampler, calamari tempura, fried calamari, the most luscious cow's tongue, flaky, perfect sea bass on rice, and plum and wine sorbet. Each was so perfect that I wanted to cry every time the food met my tongue. We also indulged in some extra dessert--green tea ice cream tempura sitting in raspberry sauce. The service was the best I've ever seen in a restaurant; every time we finished a course, our dishes would be whisked away to be replaced by another equally delicious course. It was magical.

I live down the street so i get take-out here when I feel lazy after work and don't feel like cooking. The salmon collar is delicious and a great value for the amount of food you get. I've also had a few sit-down meals here and their entrees are decent... no wow factor but predictable quality.

When I wait for my take-out order at the bar counter, a sweet waitress or waiter always asks me if I would like some tea while I wait... very friendly people. Not somewhere I'd go for high grade sashimi, but definitely a neighborhood staple!

    Date/Time:  Thursday - 9pm
    Occasion:   Dinner
    Party of:  Two
Ordered:  Sashimi salad, Baked oysters, Hamachi sashimi, California roll with real crab, and Rainbow roll
    Total incl gratuity: $55.00

I had heard a lot of phenomenal things about this place and finally paid them a visit to see for myself.  Definitely exceeded my expectations.  I enjoyed each one of the dishes we ordered.  The fish is exceptionally fresh.  Their CA rolls are made with real crab - not imitation.  I already enjoy CA rolls with imitation crab...imagine my delight when I discovered the real crab stuffing.

The sashimi salad is an assortment of fresh tuna, salmon, and hamachi tossed with greens and a wasabi dressing.  The baked oysters were delectable - topped with a gentle amount of seasoned breadcrumbs.  The rainbow roll was a safe and delicious choice for me.  Very generous size and prepared with the fresh crab California roll.

Not only did they place serve great food, their service was authentic and very friendly.  The servers did everything efficiently and with a smile.  I can tell this place brings back a lot of repeat customers because of the nice-family feel you get here.  After perusing the menu again, I know I will be back to try their foie gras tuna and for more delicious sushi.

    Nice, VERY nice.

VERY attentive staff. Nothing fancy in terms of trappings. But, like other yelpers - as good as it gets - especially in the North Beach area.

Convenient to public transportation (MUNI and the Cable Car) - otherwise cab it or, if you have to - find a parking spot on/near Columbus Street.

I have enjoyed sushi restaurants throughout the USA. This is as good as you will find!!

I came here with a few coworkers of mine and I'd have to say it was pretty good. I've had better but this was still fairly good. I ordered the spicy dragon roll and it came out quick! The service here is better than a lot of small asian restaurants. They were nice and the su chef was very nice to us as well. My coworkers got the lunch special with the bento box and they got a lot of food for a good price. I will do that next time!

They have some sort of Japanese happy hour for drinks, sushis and sides from Monday to Friday between 5pm and 6:45pm. The makis were pretty good, and they offered tea even for a cheap order.

There aren't too many sushi spots to choose from in North Beach. No matter, Sushi On North Beach is the place to go! Their fish is fresh, the staff is friendly, and they have an extensive list of specialty rolls.

    For rolls, we tried:

    Spicy Tuna (my fave roll)
    Crunchy Spicy Tuna
    Negihama
    Spider
Spicy Dragon (not very spicy tho)

    For nigiri we tried:
    Hamachi
Sake toro (I didn't know there was such a thing...delish!)
Hamachi toro (also never heard of this, but it was fresh & buttery!)

Everything was delicious. We ate & drank to our heart's content & it didn't break the bank. Sweet.

the BF and I went here  for dinner tonight because we got a groupon deal for the taste of the east dinner which is normally 29 a person but we got it for 2/1. We decided to venture into the city to check it out (we live in marin county). The place was easy to find, i was worried about parking because i know it can be a pain when people are getting ready to go out drinking on saturday evenings... but we got lucky and got street parking half a block away.

we obviously ordered the dinner, but we also ordered some sushi as well. .. We probably ordered too much but we ate it all. every piece of fish was very fresh! the sashimi was like butter and amazing. Even the calamari (which isn't deep fried) tasted good, and we are not huge fans of it.

If we were in the city again and wanted sushi we will come back.

    Very happy with our experience.

For the price and quality, North Beach sushi is a terrific spot.
It doesn't have the wine & sake lists of the pricier spots, but it has great sushi, great service for a great price.

This is a cute Japanese restaurant and, location-wise, it stands out amongst the surronding North Beach Italian restaurants.  I made a point of visiting it last week after doing walking exercise on the Lombard and Hyde Street hills behind it.  I ordered the sashimi combo dinner which had 12 pieces of fish: 3 red tuna, 3 salmon, 2 yellowtail, 2 white tuna, and 2 albacore.  The fish was fresh and were good-sized pieces.  Very enjoyable.

Since I was in the mood for a drink, I checked out their offerings. They had available Asahi beer in draft form for $5.95 a pint.  On the other hand, they had the 12 ounce small bottle for $3.75.  I decided to settle for the small bottle because somehow I couldn't convince myself to pay that price difference for four more ounces, even though it's draft versus bottled beer.

I saw they had Japanese writings in the restaurant so most likely it is Japanese-owned.  That's a plus given the high number of such places in the area being Chinese- or Korean-owned instead.

Went here our second time for my fiance's birthday. We had a party of 6 and they were able to seat us very quickly. First thing we ordered were the oyster shooters- raw oyster, sea urchin, duck egg.. and i think its vodka mixed with sake.. whatever it was.. it was crazy. Best part is taking turns drinking the shots and laughing at each other! Next, we were ready to order. Sashimi, dragon roll, fireballs is our favorites. Everything is very fresh. Overall, atmosphere is cute and prices are very friendly  convenient.

Alright, so I've been surfing yelp for years and have eaten at countless places, but this Sushi on North Beach is the first restaurant that I'm actually taking the time to write a few comments on.

This place is my absolute fav sushi spot in the city - the waiters are friendly and attentive, fish is high quality and very reasonably priced, and the owner Katsu is the nicest guy ever.  As much as I'd love to spread the word, I'm a bit reluctant to disclose too much as I enjoy the short wait times at NBS.

Now I'll let you in on a secret - the real reason that this place is so awesome is because of the amazing things that are OFF the menu.  First of all - Katsu can customize any roll or hand roll that you want and can think of.  If you're ready for a mind blowing experience, ask for the foie gras scallop nigiri (they have foie gras + tuna on the menu, but in my opinion, this takes it to the next level).  Second - customize your own hand roll.. my fav is sea urchin + yellowtail + salmon roe with a quail egg on top.  If you are an oyster fan, ask for their special oyster nigiri.. they'll put uni, fish eggs, and other goodies inside.  These are just some suggestions.. let your imagination go wild.  (oh and don't forget the fatty tuna)

As for appetizers, I love the yellowtail collar here, it's ridiculously tender and melts in your mouth.  The agedashi tofu is lightly and perfectly fried with the perfect texture.  For sashimi lovers, chirashi is the best deal on the menu, I get it every week.

I've yet to try everything on the menu (or off of it for that matter), but I haven't been slightly disappointed yet!

is it possible to give 0 or negative stars? My co-workers have been hounding me for not writing a review and saving the general public from the perils of this place. Yes, it was that bad.

We ordered delivery and everyone seemed disappointed with their order - portions too small and the taste was just average or below-average. Everyone, that is, except for the co-worker who ordered the chirashi. At first we were all impressed at the quantity and apparent freshness of the sashimi. Then my co-worker saw it. A pink, slivery worm crawling around on her hamachi and making its way to the tuna. She said "At first I was so surprised at how fresh the fish was that it was still moving. And then I saw it." And then she went to throw up.

The worst part is that when I called management to complain, the owner/manager said they would refund me just HER portion of the bill, and I would have to personally make a trip back to the restaurant to even get it. If they had at least comp'd us for the whole meal I might not be as upset, but they really need to understand that no one else is going to continue eating their meal after seeing such monstrosity!

All I can say is that I wish Yelp would allow me to post videos, because the picture I have of the worm just doesn't do it justice.

We had bought a Groupon and when we came in we descivored that it was a 'pre selected package meal', so we were really bummed out that we couldn't substitute what we like. We figured if we hate it, or its not enough, we can order from the real menu. As it turned out, there was no need. The price-fixe menu was nothing short of spectacular, it started with a basic Miso sou (with mushrooms) and salad. Next gamed a sashimi salad with greens and japanese souce. That was followed by 4or 5 nigiri pieces for each of us - sake, hamachi, butterfish, and maybe one othe, also with tune tuna sashimi. Yummm. Then we were ready for the hot portion of the meal. It started wiht a plate of veggie and seafood tempura for each of us. Next a platter of beef tongue  wiht a fish whose name I don't recall was brought, it was spectacular. And if that wasnt enough, the ending was a grilled seabass piece in yummy sauce, of it couse the green tea ice cream was last, and it was delicious. This meal usually costs $58 there, well worth every penny, we are going back for sure!

My favorites: Sunomono Salad - Seaweed, octopus, shrimp, and thinly sliced cucumbers all in a light vinegar dressing!

Foie Gras! SO GOOD! Can't wait to try it again~

Best sushi joint on North Beach, SF! I took my girlfriend on a date there and she fell in love with their food! Great place for A date. The food was served immediately! I noticed they pay close attention to details when taking orders and placing your them on the table. We walked out drunk and full. Kanomi was our server. Her and the staff will take good care of you and your guests!

The miso, salad, and veggie/shrimp tempura were great. However, I had ordered albacore sushi and received tuna instead. When I mentioned it to the server, she told me it was just a darker part of the fish. Really? When my boyfriend's roll came out it was topped with tuna, which just so happened to be the same color of my "albacore". My salmon roll was supposed to be salmon, cream cheese, and rice but instead it was half salmon and half...yep. Tuna. It was a huge disappointment but made me even more grateful for the sushi I get at my place back home.

    Love this place!

it is super cute, good service & amazing quality food! What more could you ask for from a sushi restaurant? You can sit at a table or at the bar - both have advantages. Sitting at the bar you get to see the chiefs preparing the food - very cool! Sitting at your own table has a more quiet, casual atmosphere.

I have eaten in and taken out and both experiences were great!

For anyone who is a sushi lover this is a great option with lots to choose from on the menu! It can be good for sharing or there are platter options too which are perfect for the sushi lover with the non sushi lover!
