Stopped here for a birthday weekend, and walked into an empty restaurant around 5:30 on a Sat.  Glad we stayed, because it was happy hour, and the place filled up in no time.

The wife loved Blue Ocean (Ocean Blue?) roll, which was wrapped with cucumber instead of seaweed / rice.  It is her new favorite roll :)  Seared ahi, salmon, asparagus, seaweed salad, cucumber wrapper...delish.

Stayed for one spicy tuna (minimal rice, 3/5 on the tuna, 4/5 on the spicy, no mayo), and two featured rolls (Ocean Blue + Rainbow Roll).  We each got a large beer / sake combo, and then one sake on the house.  Total bill was $40, and all the staff was more than welcoming.

Would stop by again if we were in La Jolla shores.  Good spot for a quick bite / or sushi dinner.

This is as good as it gets.

While I debated writing this review because I don't want it to get too crowded here, and keep this gem all to myself, the staff and chefs here at Sushi Mori deserve the credit.   This is hands down, the best sushi I have ever had!!

The sushi is fresh, cut generously and correctly, served at the correct temperature, and always delicious.  The sushi chef is creative and knows how to prepare fish.

The quality of the fish is always great and the cuts actually cover the rice!!  They take quality in their food, and value their customers which is rare.  They also remember their customers when they come back.  I like to write reviews after I have fully vetted a place, and this restaurant is definitely fully vetted.

No matter if you don't think this is the best sushi you have ever had, I guarantee you will not be disappointed.  Please go and enjoy a great lunch or dinner here.

They sometimes bring a free salad or appetizer to the table too!!  This place is great!!

Sushi Mori has finely decorated rolls, many of which are interesting to look at even from across tables. I wished I had taken photos, but at the time, I was too hungry to remember. They tasted good, but I wouldn't highly note them for it.

But I have to say that their spicy fried udon with seafood was really good and worth a try. I was addicted to the very tender scallops.

They had cute holiday decorations during the Christmas season and the atmosphere just felt very relaxing. My bf and I craved sushi during the busy hours but did not want to deal with the oversized crowds of sushi joints near college campuses or PB. Basically, anywhere in downtown La Jolla would be perfect, of course, if you were willing to pay the price. Living by the mall at UTC, we were clearly willing to after realizing that UCSD had just ended their last day of finals.

The rolls were actually decently priced. Some specialty rolls and dishes did get pricey, but there were many options on their menu. The noodles were also given in VERY generous amounts!

Overall I was satisfied with this place. In the future, when craving sushi, however, Sushi Mori would not cross my mind as one of my first options.

We checked out this place because we were starving and missed our appt for Kayaking a few doors down.

It was 1100 in the am and for some reason, my group and I wanted to drink.  "SAKE BOMB!!!"  "SAKE SAKE SAKE SAKE SAKE BOMB SAKE BOMB" Wooohoooo!!

Our waitress was so freakin' awesome!! It was definitely an experience to get pumped up like that and to drink SAKE BOMB!!

We ordered so many rolls and other types of food!  They were all good.  The only down side to this place, its very hard to find parking anywhere.  Look at the pictures that I uploaded.  All the food are pretty tasty and the no rice sushi rolls are pretty refreshing!

Decent Sushi place, if you're walking around La Jolla

My friends and I happened upon Sushi Mori because we were in the La Jolla area.

Sushi Mori doesn't have mind blowing sushi, however the sushi is a least tasty. This restaurant is probably one of the better deals for restaurants in the area.

There are plenty of pieces for each dish, so this place is good for groups. The prices are decent ( the rolls are under $10)

Most of the rolls seem to come with little American Flags...I guess this place is patriotic...

This was walking distance from a kayak tour my sister and I took in La Jolla - sushi sounded great after that workout. It was pretty typical sushi-fare and was a-ok with me. The service wasn't outrageously bad or good. Overall, the experience was just fine.

I was visiting the La Jolla area with my family. The food was good, but we really enjoyed the service. The waitress was great with our 2 kids ages 8 and 10. They had so much fun at the restaurant because of our waitress. I wish I remembered her name. We will definitely go again when we are in town. Again the sushi was good but nothing off the charts.

Don't see what all the fuss is about....as sushi places go, in South Orange County, places like this are a dime a dozen.

The cut rolls were ok, but certainly not 5 star.   The sashimi was fairly fresh and the presentation was ok, but smothered in sauces is not the way I like my cut rolls...the sauce should accent the rolls, not drown them.

That said, there was plenty to like, but just nothing to rave about.

Pricing was in line and in La Jolla, that says something.

Overall, I thought it was ok and if I lived local, I bet I could eat enough dishes to find their true signature dish.

The seaweed salad was very good though and the Maguro (tuna) was just right, so no complaints.

The young man serving us was hardly attentive and the thought of eating sushi with shirtless beach bums with tattoos was odd, but being a block from the beach, this place makes everyone feel welcome.

All in all, ok, but not Nobu quality...but not priced like Nobu either.

    Awesome sushi restaurant!

Suzie Q was our waitress and made our lunch so much fun! She pumped us up during our sake bomb race and was making jokes the whole time! She was so nice to offer a free appetizer for the winner of the sake bomb race as well, and even gave us complimentary sides such as sea weed salad and kimchi!

The presentation of the sushi are exquisite!

I would recommend the Meat Lovers roll and the Blue Ocean roll.

Hopefully I can come back and try the other quirky and fun rolls!

It's not easy describing our experience at Mori, but we got suckered into omakasa at a very ordinary sushi bar. My impression of omakasa is when the sushi chef has really special delicacies.

So we start by having sashimi, yellow-tail, tuna and salmon, very ordinary. Next up was jumbo scallop. It tasted good but was frozen not live or fresh. The next dish was aji (spanish mackerel) that was delicious. But after that things went downhill fast. Sushi was presented, tuna, yellow-tail , salmon nothing special. Fresh water eel , very common. And finally uni, I told him we didn't want uni but he insisted and presented four orders for the four of us, that's eight pieces of average uni, weird.

We also ordered two bottles of sake and a beer, next the hostess comes up behind us and insists we buy the sushi chefs a drink, kinda shaming us into it. Well then we had to do these cheesy toasts, not something I would normally do.

So the bill comes and its right around 4 big ones, wow what a waste of money for all you can eat type of sushi. Not a place I will be revisiting.

    20% off 6-8pm woot :)
We ordered the Lobster Beach Roll, Pizza Roll (it was so pretty with a flame on it), Rainbow Tempura Roll, and green tea ice cream. Their rolls are comparable to Sushi Diner in the sense that they have a variety of  very rich rolls. Only difference is this place a much more relaxing dinner ambience.
We also got this free complimentary Japanese pancake thing which was nice of them. Will definitely be coming back to try other rolls on their extensive menu!

This place was a perfect find for the first day of the year! The service was so nice and helpful. I have lived in Southern Cali for only 6 months and Im sorry to say that Denver has WAY better Sushi than these beach cities. Sushi Mori proved me wrong though! We sat outside even with a little nip in the air but warmed by the space heater and from the sake to the food my friend and I were in pure bliss! Thanks Sushi Mori... plan on coming back for more soon!

The food and staff are wonderful. I eat here with my family often. Every time we walk in, the entire staff shouts out a welcome.

The service is outstanding and the food is wonderful. We have tried a huge variety of sushi -- the most recent one we tried was the lobster beach roll. This roll is GREAT!!! We always get the miso soup and edamame and a few other standard sushi rolls. We really never had a bad meal here.

Other times, we order to go and take it to the beach (walking distance to The Shores Beach) with some green hot tea and have a feast. The entree items -- teri chicken, noodles and etc. are good and filling. Sushi Mori offers 20% off all sushi before 6pm everyday!!! Also, when we eat in the restaurant, the sushi chef always prepares us a "on the house" sushi snack. Again, great people and great offerings!

I was pleasantly surprised by the food at this location.  Some places in La Jolla..well, you go there to be seen...not to enjoy the food.

It wasn't crowded when we went, but it was a regular business day at 3pm.  So, right after lunch and not happy hour yet.  I don't remember what we ordered, but I know I enjoyed everything.

They did bring out  complimentary 'Japanese pancakes' for us.  Delicious.

If I'm in the area, I'll definitely be back.

Tiny sushi place near La Jolla shores that serves traditional (anglicized?) Japanese cuisine.  Wonderful outdoor patio that is perfect for sitting out, people watching, on a sunny day.

Had the unagi bento box (a favorite!) and was glad to see they did not skimp on the serving.  Our table also ordered the hamachi and deep fried crab (both appetizers) and both were yummy.

Prices are decent, servings are adequate, taste is good.  If I find my way to this part of town again, I'll definitely drop by.

Friendly staff, as soon as we walked in the sushi chefs were yelling "hello!" We were seated immediately and ordered ahi and some white tuna. I ordered chicken teriyaki (as I'm still easing into the raw fish thing). Our fish came out right away and the presentation was very pretty (I'll add pictures). The ahi was delicious! Chicken teriyaki was good as well, and so was their tempura vegetables.

After eating half of our meal, the waitress brings out spicy ahi salad complements of the sushi chef's. SCORE! I didn't have any, but my fiance really enjoyed it. Then, out come some spicy tempura crab cakes - delicious! Complements of the chef's again = even MORE delicous!

The restaurant is right near the water, they have a great location. They've also got happy hour specials that are worth checking out (I believe from 4-8 is happy hour, 20% off of food.)

We'll definitely be back with family and friends!

    3.5 stars...

Located amidst the abundance of shops and restaurants in beautiful La Jolla shores. Cute sidewalk patio dining, perfect for a sunny afternoon.

Ordered a lunch special and shared. Miso soup about the same as what you'd find at most. The salad, ehh I've had better. Sashimi, chef's choice, was okay at best... the Salmon being the tastiest. I also had a Albacore Roll- spicy tuna inside, albacore outside with some "extras" to make it dazzle, when in actuality it did not. It was as bland in appearance as it was in taste. The waitress also said it was a spicy roll... it was not.

The quality of the seafood was average. Prices? Overpriced for the quality that your receive. If I come back I'll have to try their cooked/tempura rolls, maybe they are onto something there that they lack with fresh rolls.

More than the sushi, the service is very nice. As far as sushi goes, the food is very good; I wouldn't say great but definitely good and the prices are reasonable. The portions are generous and the food is fresh. But, more importantly, everyone who works there is very nice and welcoming. The environment is clean with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. If you are looking for a place to eat while walking around the beach- skip the high-fat traditional burgers, pizza, and fries options for a sushi lunch box. Good Eating!!!

This place is totally Korean.  You have to be to be just to work here.  I asked a waitress.  That said, the food is good and stylish.  Sometimes things appear on fire, sometimes they just sit around and taste good.

Downsides are it's pricey.  The seafood yakisoba was way worth it though and fed me for a couple of days.

I suggest doing sake bombs.  The owner will come out and take pictures of you and make fun of you and good times shall be had by all.  I liked shouting WINE BOMB at the well dressed people in the restaurant next to me.

The friendliest people in the world and delicious sushi! The Miko Roll, Pink Roll and "Meet Lovers" Roll are all great. The seaweed salad is probably the best I've ever had. I would avoid the green salad as well as either of the tofu salads because the dressing is pretty bland... not the same as at other sushi restaurants. I have also tried a few of the kitchen dishes (teriyaki, udon, sukiyaki) and they're all delicious.

Everything here is mediocre. It's not bad, but it's far from good.

I don't understand why this location is such a failure for sushi restaurants. I've seen probably 4-5 sushi restaurants come and go from this one location - CAN'T ANYONE GET IT RIGHT. IT'S NOT THAT FRICKEN HARD. GOOD FISH, A GOOD CHEF, DRINKS, FLAT SCREENS, GOOD MUSIC and HOT ASS!

After three hours of kayaking, a couple of my friends and I found this gem of a place.  It was especially convenient since it was located across the business where we rented our kayaks.
The food is reasonably priced.  I ended up ordering a bento box especially since I couldn't just settle on sashimi itself.  I needed a bit of tempura, I wanted a california roll, basically a little bit of this and a little bit of that.  Perfect for a bento box and the fickle eater who wants to try everything but can't eat the portion of one thing.
Miso soup and salad is included with the bento box for about 10 dollars, and you can choose a one or two item bento.
The ladies were very good with their refills and were attentive with all their customers.  At one point they gave us a free crunchy concoction to try and my friends and I found it delicious.
All in all, if I was ever in the area I would come back again.  There are plenty of seating indoor and outdoor as well.

Back in La Jolla for a long weekend, my boyfriend and I invited a friend to dinner on Saturday. We hit Sushi Mori during the last hour of their happy hour (goes til 8 pm!) and sat outside at the one table that wasn't overrun with dirty dishes/glasses. It took at least 10 minutes for someone to come take our drink order, and then they brought me the wrong beer even after the server had specifically told me which beer was the lightest that they had. There wasn't any soy sauce on the table, and we waited forever to get some. Once it came though, we still didn't have any little dishes for it - that took another 5 minutes or so. Shouldn't soy sauce & dishes be a traditional table setting, like salt & pepper in non-Japanese restaurant?
Food started coming relatively quickly after that, which was a mixed blessing - some good, some... definitely not-so-good. The edamame was pretty standard but was well-salted, and it was a good portion for 3 bucks. The hamachi kama, one of my favorite starters, was also good but needed a little more grilled flavor. It was also strewn with tobiko, which is a preparation I have never seen before. We then ordered a few basic rolls (spicy scallop, salmon skin), some of their specialty rolls (Lobster Beach, Blue Ocean), hamachi sashimi, and some nigiri (red snapper, ono). The salmon skin roll was quite good - nice crispy, crunchy skin in there but not overstuffed. The sauce drizzled on the plate was a little sweet though, maybe eel sauce? The hamachi sashimi seemed very fresh and was a good-sized portion for 3 people to share. The spicy scallop roll had an off flavor, however, as did the red snapper nigiri - both were distinctly fishy. The Blue Ocean roll had an interesting presentation: tuna, salmon, and asparagus was wrapped in cucumber and topped with seaweed salad. This was good but very difficult to eat. It might have been better wrapped in thin cucumber slices instead of basically a hollowed-out cucumber. Finally, the Lobster Beach roll was ridiculous. My boyfriend liked it but I thought it was completely over-the-top. The roll was topped with baked langoustine in a spicy mayo, which was really good, but I could not eat the roll itself. The fake crab and the avocado were all mushed together underneath the baked topping and it was pretty unappetizing. I was glad we went during happy hour where everything is 20% off.
My main gripe with this place is that they should have some sort of guardrail or rope or chain, *something* to differentiate the patio from a street entrance to the restaurant. The whole night I was jolted from behind by people pushing behind me to get to the sidewalk beyond our table. Where we were sitting was *clearly* a dining area, there was no way people could miss that. And yet at least 5 people squeezed by, forcing me to scoot my chair in, lose some bites of food, and nearly spill my beer. It was incredibly annoying, and I was put out that no one from the waitstaff said something or even noticed.

A friend suggested this place for dinner after I said I was craving sushi over the weekend. First of all, parking is ridiculously annoying to find in this area. After managing to squeeze into a small parking spot, the first thing I noticed about this place was how empty it was. It was next to a bustling Italian restaurant so the contrast was pretty drastic and noticeable. Putting that aside, I kept an open mind and took a look at their menu. The rolls were normally priced for a Japanese restaurant in downtown La Jolla, so I wasn't too surprised. Prices run anywhere from $10-$15 per specialty roll. We ordered two salmon nigiri, a play boy roll, and a spider roll.

Before the food came, an acoustic guitarist started playing music, which was fairly odd in a sushi restaurant. He was actually pretty good, except the few people who applauded in the restaurant made the entire spectacle pretty sad. In fact, it was so quiet in the restaurant, I swear I could hear other people chew.

When the food did come out, I found the salmon to be quite chewy/stringy in texture. I also thought the soft shell crab wasn't very appetizing to look at or eat. Despite that, the rolls were decent and I probably would have enjoyed them more had I been more hungry. Highlight of the meal was the delicious free pineapple at the end. I thought it was cool that they made the wasabi into a mint leaf print. They also didn't have low sodium soy sauce (the green bottle), which is usually standard by now at most sushi restaurants. I should have had my doubts about this place when I saw the giant billboard advertising 20% off for lunch or other such discounts. But, all in all, it wasn't half bad; yet, not half good either.

The food is good, but definitely not worth more than 3 stars. The service was shitty the last time I went (for dinner). By the time they brought chopsticks to our table and the tempura sauce, my food was lukewarm. The service was better when we went at 4pm. The only thing this place really has going for it is the location.

Great service, good food, reasonable happy-hour prices

Service was just great here (though we were the only ones there...).  After a long beach jog and bike trip, we were hungry.  We got there 10 mins before happy hour, but waitress was glad to give us a  So we ordered some tempura ice cream and a few pieces of sushi to start, to help get something out right away.  Server happily added items to our order (hungry roll, spicy tuna roll, extra green tea) as we went.

    Notes:
    * Hungry roll was very nice
    * Fish portions on sushi were nice, all were fresh
    * Salmon tasted great; hamachi (yellowtail) and albacore tuna were a little bland (but definitely fresh).  No hotate (scallop) available...
    * Spicy tuna roll was ok (fresh, nicely made, just not too interesting to eat.  Have had these at numerous places).
    * hot tea was actually a bit costly... surprising, as most Japanese restaurants I've gone to offered hot tea for free.  Nice bagged yamamotoyama green tea though, I enjoyed it.

I would definitely go back here for happy hour.  Full fare would be a bit harder to swallow on the price, and I'd probably explore other places around La Jolla Shores in that case.

Sorry to disagree with the previous 2 reviewrs. We found the food only average. And the service was really unfortunate -- though the resulting apology was dramatic.

After a long wait, we were told that somewhere on the menu (we didn't see it), it is written that orders take 40 minutes. That, we were told, was why one of us had been served and (with permission) approximately finished his three courses before the other one of us was going to see a single item from her order. I felt that they should have warned us when we ordered if one person's choice took 40 minutes more than the other. I don't think it's excessive to expect better coordination than this -- apology or no apology. It just wasn't fun.

Note: only 2 other tables in the entire place were occupied while we were there. The other restaurants in the area were busy -- so maybe our reaction is shared. I shudder to think what the service would be like if a lot of people showed up at once.

To start with, I'm old school J food in USA.  In other words, I only eat it if it's cooked.  Exceptions are salad and water  ;)

Party had the bento boxes, no sashimi/sushi other than Cali roll.  I had salmon, and they gave me double portion on the salmon!  Not sure why, but we're a pleasant and fun bunch.  Was talking a lot with the servers.  It's our second time here.

The salmon was great, not overcooked.  The Teri chicken also cooked perfectly, not charred with icky tasting carbon bits like the fake hawaiian grill places.  Tempura was good, although I would have preferred it piping hot.  I've heard that restaurants avoid serving high temp food these days, what with the lady at McD's that was surprised that the coffee was Hot.  She sued and won.  Oh well.

It's all good.  I'm coming back for sure.

L-O-V-E this place.  I don't write reviews often.  I try to only write reviews for services that I seriously love and I love this sushi joint!  Do you know how much my fiance and I love this place?  He's currently deployed and the first thing he wants to do when he comes back is to eat their lobster beach roll!!

So, upon stepping in the restaurant, you're greeted by a super nice staff.  They're so friendly!  The food is delicious and plentiful too!  I recently went there with 3 other people and we were so stuffed after 5 rolls shared amongst all of us.  And I don't know what the previous posters were talking about in regards to the restaurant being quiet.  They have awesome Korean hip hop music playing in the background.  We found it really amusing.  lol.

Some foods to try is the pink roll and the lobster beach roll.  I LOOOVE the lobster beach roll.  Yum-MAY!  And I love the fact that it's not in the crazy La Jolla proper where places cost an arm and a leg to eat at.  Instead, it's in the beach-towny part of La Jolla which is totally cool with me.  Check it out!  You'll love it!
