One of my absolute favourite spots when I want some uber fresh and affordable sushi when I'm on the go or want some takeout or delivery.
This contemporary a chill environment is the perfect place to grab a bite while your out and about running errands or want to catch up with a friend on a time crunch. They always have a stack of local new papers so you can enjoy an amazing spicy tuna, a yam avocado roll and some of Vancouver's best Sockeye Salmon Sashimi (they only serve wild salmon which I also LOVE).
If your a sushi fan and the vibe suits what your looking for, you won't be disappointed.
Overall best sushi in it's class (super causal dine in or takeout) -
Review from Gary M.
So, we are on our way walking the sea wall around sunset beach and it's 11AM and hunger pangs come over us.
In unison we say "sushi"!
Now we have just come back 2 weeks ago from the land of sushi (Japan) and have been wowed with standing sushi bars, keiten sushi bars and fresh fish from the Tsukiji fish market... so our expectations are pretty high at this point.
We thought of all the places we could go to on Davie, Denman and Robson and then we remember Sushi Mart. Those dudes are Japanese if I remember correctly... They should make it right?? right?
Well let me tell you these guys made it right.
We ordered a California roll, 2pc Salmon, 2pc tuna and 2pc ebi combo including miso soup / Spinach Gomae / Spicy tuna roll. Everything was really fresh. Rice was perfect texture. Gomae was not too sweet, and lovely texture. We liked the spicy tuna roll but it was the weakest link of the meal.
After our time in Tokyo we were glad we could find a place that we could enjoy and not be disappointed with. Is this as good as Japan? uhm not quite. My wife actually only gave 3 stars (but she can write her own Yelp review, lol) But it's close enough and good enough to earn 4 stars and save me a trip to Shibuya.
Final total $18.98
That leaves $21.02 in our lululemon pockets and a sweet tooth that needs to be taken care of... Off to Whole foods before we continue on our Saturday walk! -

Good 'pick' of tuna, plump sushi, and delivered neat. Limited seating, but worth the inconvenience.

So I wanted delivery (because the 5 sushi places within stumbling distance from my house just weren't enough to drag me out on a rainy day)... and I was tired of my usual.
I decided to bust out some Yelp and find myself a great place from which to order... this place drew me in with its Ocean Wise menu options, and I will say I'm impressed!
To start, my delivery person was wearing a full on motorcycle suit - he was sopping wet (note my above reason for not going out for sushi), yet he was beaming a smile the entire time I went to get cash.
The food itself was great - with one exception (I'll add it at the end, since it wasn't a deal breaker). I got the spicy tuna and the spicy salmon, as well as two pieces of inari and a goma-ae. I got a serious kick out of the diligent labelling of my spicy options ;) The tuna was 5/5, while the salmon was a 4 (it just didn't melt in my mouth like a few other salmon options I've had). The inari was amazing - such a brilliant combo with my spicy options. But I have to come back to my one disappointment - the goma-ae. If you are a fan of this dish - don't bother with this one. It was bland. (I put the spicy sauce on it to compensate ;)
Overall though - I loved it! It was particularly awesome because of its dedication to sustainable seafood eating.
Props to Sushi Mart.Listed in: West End Favs

I love Sushi Mart! I love the giant table, staff is wonderfully friendly. Ocean-wise fishies are tasty and well priced!

Vancouver, BC
The sushi at this place is really not that special. It stays together well but it isn't some mind blowing experience. The price is also on the higher end of what you'll find in the city. Sometimes lunch here costs 15-20 bucks.
There are a few things that really make Sushi Mart stand out though. The big thing that you will notice right away is that there is only one big long table in the restaurant. This kinda complicates ordering as the restaurant is usually busy and it's not always apparent what is happening. The staff is however very positive and helpful.
The thing that really makes this place stand out for me though is how good of a job they've done with their web services. The website
http://www.sushimart.c...
allows you to order online and check the menu out or download an app for android or iphone. It's awesome to see a restaurant with an app. There is also a daily QR code special. If you go to the restaurant a few times with the app and check in then you get a deal as well.
Really cool stuff, a neat experience, tasty ocean wise sushi and a positive vibe. Sushi mart is a bit different and worth a trip. -

The only place I will go to for sushi Downtown. Fresh, Ocean-wise approved fish, excellent service and the freshest most delicious sushi in Downtown Vancouver.
Don't even bother going to the all-you-can-eat places. To be honest, the Japanese always do the best sushi. Which makes sense since they're masters of their trade. I'm not a sushi snob, I just know it's about quality and not quantity. -
Review from Robin M.
In a city full of amazing sushi joints, these guys win. Full stop.
Since opening in 2009, Sushi Mart has been my go-to place for a quick and tasty meal. It's everything I want in a restaurant - fresh, delicious, clean, cheap, and literally right around the corner. Also, HUGE bonus points for being authentically Japanese.
That last point is, I think, extremely important here. Not only is it obvious that there's a certain level of pride that goes into their food, but they've also put a lot of thought into creating just the right atmosphere. With the addition of some (super rad) old wooden pallets that line the entirety of one wall, the minimal space is warm, modern, and totally relaxed. Also: I love me a restaurant with a massive communal table!
What it comes down to I suppose, is that at a certain point in a restaurant-patron relationship, the staff awkwardly know who you are and what your "usual" is, and you subsequently find yourself in that slightly uncomfortable position of wondering whether you should place your order as you normally would or if it's better to wait until they do it for you... Sushi Mart and I are waaay past that. It's that good.
Also, awesome miso soup. Period. -
Review from Clara K.
reasonably priced, high quality sushi. you place your order at the register, then take a seat at the huge communal table (or there are a few smaller separate tables off to the side). they bring over miso soup and a vacuum thermos of hot tea, then shortly after, your sushi.
i was pretty impressed by the freshness of the fish for the price. if i lived in the area, i'd probably be a frequent visitor.
note: tuna here is by default albacore, as is toro (tuna belly). they do have red tuna on the menu if you prefer. -

I was a bit skeptical at first, the name didn't inspire too much confidence but I was definitely proven wrong. Fantastic sushi, some of the best I've had anywhere. I had salmon in several preparations, as nigiri, in a roll, and Salmon roe. It was remarkably fresh and superbly presented.
I like how they use sriracha sauce in their spicy rolls; that was very unique and added a nice flavor without being overpowering. This sriracha fan was very impressed. -

I finally get it.
I've been keeping a watchful eye on Sushi Mart since their inception. For some reason I initially found their modern design and name unappealing. Today, while looking for a quick late lunch location, I decided to get to know the new kid on the block.
My lunch combo of spicy tuna and california roll cost under 6 bucks. Both a little sticker than usual but well put together, especially the spicy tuna - packs a punch! The bonus miso soup had tiny firm cubes of tofu, a nice change from disintegrated tofu bits.
Although I wish the wasabi was a little dryer and the ginger a little wetter, the overall meal is real value for money and satisfactory.
Now I kinda like the gutsy concept of the communal table with real green tea in thermos flasks for self-service. They took care to serve the kids at the end of the table in colourful plastic cups instead of the usual porcelain cups.
On top of it all, they're ocean-wise!
Big check of approval, keep it up Sushi Mart! -

On the run to my exam, I took a turn to Sushi mart for a quick late lunch at 3pm. To put the sushi to the test, I took the bag to UBC by bus. Before my exam, I took the sushi and checked the firmness and how well it was wrapped.
Taking a Lunch combo, most of the sushi was fresh yet badly wrapped. Nori rudely poked out at me, enveloped in the perfectly soft beady translucent rice.
I have had a lot of bad sushi. Yet this one sits close to the near top. Fast service. Good for take-out. Ambiance is good for a short sit-in. Good for every buck paid. Cheers. -
Review from Alex J.
I gotta say, I love this place. I've been here several times, and although I order the same amount / same order of sushi every time, I've never been disappointed. The sushi is simply consistently delicious! The service is great! The staff are nice, and the sushi itself is generous.
The only downside to this place is that if you get there when it's full of people - you might have to take out ( I think they do takeout? ) or wait until someone leaves their spot. -
Review from Janice F.
Good quality sushi, but not the budget value I was hoping for!
For about $25 we ordered the Pacific roll, Dynamite roll, 2 pieces of wild salmon, 1 unagi, 1 uni, 1 ikura and 1 hotate.
The rolls come cut into 4 pieces. Psychologically, I can't accept a sushi roll with less than 6 pieces. Physically, I know it's the same size as a 6 piece roll :P
The complimentary miso is a nice touch though.
Still on the hunt for good, cheap sushi downtown! -

I stumbled on this place a week ago and have been back twice!
The feel is very casual and you don't feel awkward if you want to eat alone as it is set up to accomodate this. You are made to feel very welcome as all of the staff great you when you walk in with a "Irasshaimase!" meaning welcome!
Miso soup and a large pot of tea are included in your order. The nice part of ordering before you sit means that you don't have to wait to be served. The food comes out quickly and is brought to you with a smile.
All of their fish is Ocean Wise approved (check our http://www.oceanwise.ca for details) and you can taste the differance.
I will be back many times over!!!!! Thank you Sushi Mart! -
Review from Brent F.
Yum! Fresh sushi, nice prices, and I like being able to order first and then sit. The Miso is included if you order a combo or main sushi dish, and the fish was very fresh with nice presentation. I felt full after eating here, and my friends were jealous that I ordered the best thing on the menu (the shashimi bowl over rice).
Bottomless hot green tea also.

Do you want to know what my Assorted Sushi($9.25) looked like?
The one that had Tuna, Salmon, Ebi, Ika, Tobiko, Tamago & a Tuna Roll?
Check their Menu Website because its almost identical except for the styrofoam box it came in as I had it to-go.
While the assortment was fresh and price reasonable it was the Shari Sushi Rice and the slight al-dente texture that I wasn't enjoying as much. It was slightly disappointing since when I stepped inside this modern establishment with communal sitting and Sushi Chef on display, I immediately smelled the Sushi Rice & Rice Vinegar combination that can make anyone salivate.
When I opened my Dinner a minute after leaving, the Sushi Rice was no longer the lingering smell but it was the Nori. On the positive, I even like the sweetness of the Tamago. NOW I remember what wasn't quite identical! The Tuna Roll was a bit smushed and uneven. WIth all this said and done, it's still a good place for a quick bite & SHOW. -
Review from Edward L.
Popped into here for a snack with a buddy. I had a chopped scallop roll.
The food here is VERY fresh, but a bit pricey, at $4 for a 6-piece roll. Ambience is nice. Interior looks very modern (almost like a showroom in a furniture store, and unlike most other "hip" places, the walls weren't painted black. To be honest, I'm not sure if I'd be full after $20 here.
The tea is dished out in thermos-sized insulated pitchers, which is nice because you don't have to keep asking for teapot refills.
Can't say too much here, but to be honest, for the money I'd rather walk a block west and get some ramen for a couple of bucks more. -

I had avoided the 'mart' for some time mostly due to the name. I wasn't exactly sure of what to expect for quality but assumed it would be less than stellar.
Surprisingly, the mart served up good-sized portions that tasted fresh and delicious. They even provide free miso soup which was a bonus.
You order at the counter and then sit at a long communal table (not my favourite situation, but I submitted to it). There are only a couple small tables near the door.
Food came promptly and like I said, was pretty dang good ... especially given the low prices. I'm a spicy tuna guy and enjoyed the large, tender pieces of tuna in my roll.
The dynamite roll was little less exiting since it didn't contain a tempura prawn .... I then noticed that they didn't have any sort of deepfrying equipment, so hence ... no tempura prawn. They improvise by adding a prawn along with some tempura flakes ... but it's just not the same.
Will be back to try more soon! Hours aren't very late which is a bummer -- it serves more the lunch and early dinner crowd. -

Before, I always walked past Sushi Mart without seeing it, but thanks to http://Yelp.com I think this is going to become my favourite sushi place in Vancouver.
Rolls I can fit in my (admittedly small) mouth? Delicious miso soup that isn't lukewarm? Green salad with arugula? Oceanwise fish? Communal table? Your own kettle of tea? Yes please! -

Really great lunch specials. Got a plate with 6 delicious California rolls and 6 spicy tuna rolls with a side of Miso soup for only $5. And there is free Green tee at the table.
I definitively recommend it. -

I love this place.
The place looks nice and it has unique with the big long table in the middle of the shop.
We ordered Chirashi Don , and of cause sushi.
It was really tasty!
This place is really good for quick good sushi on the way home or with couple friends for a good food!
Would love to go back there again sometime soon! -

I love these guys!
We ordered our usual take out dinner, but got home only to discover that both our Wakame and Gomaae salads were missing!
Seeing that we were too exhausted from a full day in the sun, we decided to cut our losses and chow down on what food we had in front of us.
Later that evening my phone rang, it was Sushi Mart calling to whole heartily apologized for our missing items! They offered to refund us for our missing items right away or have them for free the next time we visited. We chose the latter, as we knew we would be back again.
Sure they made a mistake, but how many restaurants would actually call you back and admit they made a mistake? Not very many and that makes them unique, and makes me an even more loyal customer.1 Previous Review: Show all »

* Continues to impress *
Ok, we couldn't stay away long and returned to see what they had on the fresh sheet for today.
Got the chirashi and this was one of the best chirashi I have had at the budget sushi places in Vancouver. The toppings included:
- 3 slices of bincho
- 2 slices of wild salmon
- 1 slice of hamachi (yellowtail tuna)
- 1 piece of ika (squid)
- 1 piece of tako (octopus)
- 2 slices of tamago (egg omelet)
- 1 ebi (shrimp)
- a generous amount of tobiko (roe)
- a generous amount of ikura (salmon roe)
- some cooked and chilled shitaki mushrooms
- a few cucumber slices for decoration
That bowl was just $9.50. While the toppings are nothing out of the ordinary in terms of the variety, the product was incredibly fresh. Fish was sliced in very generous cuts. They also give complimentary miso soup which was appreciated. This was a great lunch deal for budget sushi. Very high quality, and very reasonably priced.
We will definitely be returning again and again!Listed in: Vancouver Japanese Food, Something fishy (hopefully…, Engrish

Review from Nish N.
I had heard rumors and tall tales about the quality of sushi that came out of Vancouver but, hailing from San Francisco myself, figured that they were just that: conjecture.
Well yesterday I had the chance to stop into Sushi Mart, an unassuming little spot with some of the freshest fish I've had in a long while, at any price. I'm talking melt-in-your-mouth hamachi, a spicy tuna roll with honest-to-goodness heat, wild salmon, really everything thing. If I had to do my lunch over, I'd stick just to sashimi; the fish was that good.
And cheap! Nigiri topped out at $2.50 and rolls were averaged between $2.75 and $3.50. Most of their sushi combo lunches were under $10. You can order to go, but I recommend finding some seats at the one long table and cramming in with the other diners for that communal effect.
Vancouver - your sushi has humbled me. Thank you.Listed in: Vancouver, You're Mine

You don't expect to order first, sit at a long communal table second and get a free miso soup third, but that's exactly what you get. (it may not be proper English I'm using, but I speaketh the truth!)
Modern, clean and bright with Wild Salmon being the ONLY choice on the menu, I'm dying to go back, and I just ate.
If my only complaint is that the rice could be a little more "solid," then Yelpers, we have a winner! -
Review from samuel a.
Vancouver, BC
It's Japanese run, so that's a plus.
Really, though, I'm not too big a fan of this place. Too much rice in the rolls - especially in the dynamite - plus in the dynamite (it says two shrimp tempura - I think they cut my in half length wise and count that as two).
I got a Philidelphia Roll (for some reason I just had a BIG hankering for cream cheese) which I won't get again. Blah.
I got a Dynamite Roll. Read comments above. Nothing special.
i got a Rainbow Roll - They don't chintz on the avocado, thankfully, and the toppings were fair. This was the best of the roll bunch.
I also did my toro test - with some nigiri, and the netta (fish on top) was not very substantial, although the toro was SUPER. Got hotate too and it was good.
All in all, you think it's a cheap place but it was just under $20 for me with a miso - which they got right. So not a budget place, not a "great" sushi place. Non-descript to me.
Stop it with the "fresh" comments too, that's a given. If some place doesn't have FRESH fish, then that's worthy of a comment. The Fresh Sheet is something separate from this, tho.
I will RETURN, and try the chirashi to see if a four star is warranted. -

I've been here three times and have always found the sushi to be good quality, the service very friendly, and the prices easy on the wallet. They have a grab and go area if your in a hurry stocked with pre-made stuff as well as a self serve bar with beer and sake you can take to your seat.
The room itself is small and simply designed, but you can tell some effort went into it, and most importantly it seems really clean. The big communal table is a nice/different touch. If your feeling unsociable just help yourself to a bottle of sake and you'll be making friends in no time. -

I have to admit that I was not expecting much when "Mart" is in the name of the restaurant. I, again, was wrong in judging a book by its cover.
After placing orders at the counter, patrons find their own seat at a long communal table a clean and modern looking restaurants. Polished concrete walls are covered with varnished wooden pallets. Free miso soup comes with your orders.
I had chopped a scallop roll, a pacific roll and a negitoro roll for less than $15. For the price, my rolls were so much more fresh and tastier than many other sushi restaurants on Robson Street. Unlike a mesh of sauces that I've had in many sushi rolls elsewhere, I could actually taste the sweetness of the scallops in my chopped scallop roll.
It wasn't crowded at all on a Friday during lunch time so it is a perfect place to get away from the downtown lunch crowd if you work downtown and have a little more time to spare to stroll down Robson on a weekday. I wish they would stay open later during the week. They close at 8pm. -

Hidden gem on Robson! Sushi Lover's come and get it!
Went there for lunch today and had this on my to try list thanks to Marc D and what a great place. Everything we had was of excellent quality from the green tea, miso soup, salmon, tuna, tamago sushi and Cali rolls. I just am so happy to find this place. For authentic high quality sushi at a reasonable price, I haven't found a better place in Vancouver. The chirashi sushi is excellent. You get an ample portion of fish and it's extremely fresh.
The rolls I've had are mostly very good and the workmanship is excellent.
Don't be put off by the seating. Everyone sits at a long table and on busy lunches it can be a bit tight - but there is a good reason for the crowd.
Sushi Mart compares well with high end sushi restaurants. -

If I were to judge this place on the name alone I don't think I would come here, but I'm sure glad I did because they have high quality sushi at reasonable prices. Upon entering this establishment, you notice a big, beautiful wooden communal table and friendly greetings from the staff! After ordering at the front counter, the food is served to you along with your own pot of tea and a miso soup. The sushi is among the freshest you will find! You won't find the fancy rolls that are at other sushi joints, but you will find the standard rolls that are high quality and cheap! I'm definitely a fan!

Review from Nick J.
Toronto, ON
The Good: very fresh fish & seafood, eerily fast service, very cheap for the quality
The Bad: awful name, spotty english speaking skills, too far from my office for lunches
I was looking for a relatively close place for sushi on one of my lunches. After having read several reviews I decided that I just had to try this odd place despite it being a 10-15 minute walk from my office in the heart of the business district.
I called ahead to order so that by the time I arrived there it would be ready. They said it would be ready in 5 minutes which was too fast for me! I became worried that I had to confirm 4x that yes, I have a 416 area code (I am only working here for 3.5 months). Even more concerned after I had to give my name (Nick) and spell it out 2x...a nightmare sushi experience began unfolding in my imagination.
Of course on the way, I, like a fool, decided to cram in a call with my sister. I got caught up in the conversation and completely forgot where the place was, and even the name! I had to use my call history to call and ask for directions...how lame of me! Once I got there I discovered that it actually has a fairly trendy interior. It is in a very small, not very noticeable space across from the Capers parking lot on Robson.
I ordered the sushi combo F (and have since ordered it again and again) for $11. For the price, it is simply the freshest sushi I have ever had. They even update on twitter if they have something new arriving, or any other changes. The spicy tuna is actually spicy! What a novelty! The most kick I have had in ordering spicy tuna so far. Sixteen pieces is quite astonishing for the price and quality level. Like others, I am kind of glad it is not as well known and out of the way for fear of it being ruined.
Every time I go I tell myself to try something else, but I am apparently weak and have no conviction! -

This is the freshest sushi place you will ever eat at in your life.
I was in Vancouver for a conference, and Sushi Mart is located in the heart of everything Japanese (on Denman & Robson). And I know sushi, I eat it alot, and been to many places around the world including Tokyo several times. The Salmon, is not your farm raised stuff, this is the real deal Sockeye or Chinook (King) depending on the season, fresh caught that day or day before. Their toro excellent. Unagi to write home about, given the texture, flavor and temperature. I have never experienced a sushi place this fresh in North America. A sure sign is the Japanese patrons at the communal table - they know their sushi. If you've had sushi at some of the best places in NY, LA, SF, Tokyo, it doesn't matter this place takes them all. -

I don't like sushi mart anymore. I've been going there since its very opening in 2009. Their rolls are not that good anyway. Their food and drinks prices are also going up and food quality is going down hill; smaller portion size and fish quality. It's really disappointing to see the restaurants are changing their sizes. Staff are not friendly either. Probably they are not happy there. Don't know. I won't recommend this place and am not going to eat in anymore.
