Not bad but with all the options around here I'd likely go elsewhere first.

This little sushi place is conveniently located right along my daily commute and I decided one day to pop in for some take out.
The server/host staff was friendly enough, but if you take one look into the kitchen - the cook staff look unengaged and honestly quite uninterested in their jobs. This made me worry a little bit, because I started to doubt the quality of the food being prepared by careless cooks. The location was fairly neat and clean, but it is quite small and was VERY busy when I stopped in.
Sure enough when my food was being boxed up to go, I noticed how sloppy my Caterpillar and Smoke Blend rolls looked! The avocado was mushy, the smoked salmon got stuck to the top of the take out container (which was held closed with a dirty rubber band of all things!) and they didn't bother giving me chopsticks or soy. And my order was quite expensive coming in at just over $23 for two roles that were falling apart and a vitamin water.
All that being said, I have given Sushi Maro a few other chances. Contrary to other reviews, I find their normal roles (california, dynamite etc etc) much better than the "chefs special roles". Also, their lunch/dinner boxes are quite a good value - but the teriyaki chicken I found to be VERY salty.
At the end of the day, if you are out for lunch or on your way home Sushi Maro is a good choice for a quick bite. I would not go here as a first choice, but if my stomach is growling like crazy - I'd consider it. -

18 pieces for $7.95? C'mon, how good can it be? or bad...I'm guessing it's not Japanese-owned...it's probably best for the locals living there and in a sushi craving.
It's too bad b/c of the location; feel bad for Opus hotel guests who have to come since there isn't much choice, though think there's one on Homer near the Oxford. I'll check it out soon for you yelpers. -

I learned a valuable lesson about sushi in Vancouver a while ago. Always order the speciality roles, because the regular roles are usually cheap, nasty crap.
And at Sushi Maro, it's no different. The caterpillar role and fried California rolls were good, not great. And the regular rolls you get in the combo were just bad. As soon as you dipped it in the soy sauce, the whole piece would fall apart. It was cheap crab meat. And bad BBQ salmon in the BC rolls.
Just pay the damn extra and get the special rolls. Even they aren't that special. I've had better Dynamite rolls at Earls... EARLS!
Why do I keep going back here? It's across the street from my flat. -

Sushi Maro is a small little sushi place on Davie right across the Canada Line. I was craving sushi that day and didn't know of the other sushi establishments around so I went with Sushi Maro. I've gone twice now and it's always around lunch time so this review will be based on a lunch hour rush.
The place wasn't full but there were still a good number of people. It was nice and cozy and I was greeted as soon as I entered. The waitresses were very polite (not just to me but to anyone who entered and left their restaurant). The atmosphere was very casual and comforting.
I ordered the salmon avocado sushi, california roll (of course, a safe bet) and the chicken teriyaki roll to see whether or not I'd be disappointed. If these were bad I wasn't going to come back. Anyway, my avocado was squished, which didn't add to the presentation at all. It wasn't superb but I'd give it a passing mark. Nothing really spectacular to say about the Cali roll - there was no new elements added to it to make it stand out. Just a regular Cali roll, just average. The chicken teriyaki roll was also average. It was filling and the sauce had a certain sweetness that went well with the chicken. The chicken was kind of dry but it wasn't like I was paying top dollar for it so I had nothing to complain about.
I came back a few days ago, but ordered take out instead. I ordered the caterpillar roll, the chopped scallop nigiri and the salmon nigiri. The Caterpillar roll consisted of crab and prawn with avocado on top. Again the avocado was tasty but very mushy. The prawn had a nice crunch to it so it wasn't too bad. The scallop was also squished but it was decent. The salmon, however didn't taste too fresh. Overall, average. Nothing special.
Would I come back? Maybe, maybe not. With such a variety of restaurants around, this wouldn't exactly pop up in my mind if my friends decided to have sushi at Yaletown.
I would've loved to try some of the appys, the donburi and the tempura to have a wider selection to review. Unfortunately, seeing as I don't plan on coming back, it probably wouldn't happen. Unless a friend wants to dine there, but I'd probably sway them from going. -

My very first visit was a pleasant surprise. I remember thinking that the rice was so fresh and not clumped in 1 inch thickness in some sushi places trying to go cheap on you. There is this sushi place on 16th, run by Japanese people, where the giant rolls are mostly rice.
Well, this place is run by Chinese people and each time I've gone in, the place has been empty. Granted, there is a big ditch right outside (subway construction). I did see a lot of take outs though.
They have new prices now but are still trying to use up the old menus? I was ordering from one when I was told of the price increase.
The sushi is okay but I did not experience that fresh rice feeling again. If you're on a budget, try the specials. I was going to order a sushi combo and an ebi sunomono that was going to cost more than the advertised sushi special for 2. Yes, of course, I got the latter and I almost finished it...by myself. -

We had a frustrating experience tonight. First we expected to get our menus much sooner, and had to ask for them. Once we ordered, we saw people seated after us who got their food before us. After asking for some more tea (twice) and having it rudely delivered to us (freshly boiled, the waiter snidely reassured us), then my grumbling about the food not being served (and told that they were busy in a half-full small restaurant) we got our order. Right then we were told that one of the appetizers we ordered was not available "tonight", this after we had received part of our entrée. My tablemate reports that the roll she received was sloppily assembled.
After receiving the bill, and signing the credit card statement, the waitress informed me that we were mistakenly charged for the portion we ordered that wasn't even available! After three attempts to communicate this did I finally agree to manually change my own signed receipt. At least they gave us cash change.
Based on experience with other Vancouver Japanese restaurants, we expected quicker, friendlier service, and even on an incorrect bill, we expected a more organized approach. Our expectations were not at all met. -

We used to get takeout from Sushi Maro all the time. It was always excellent quality for the price and when we'd go to pick it up there would be people dining in and the service would be friendly and efficient. We even ate in once ourselves and it was a good experience.
I guess the years of construction out front have trained the employees to think of themselves as a takeout joint instead of a sit down restaurant. When we stopped in last night to order some last minute takeout (after perusing the deli items at Urban Fare and not feeling particularly inspired by any of them), the three tables out front were occupied while the inside of the restaurant remained empty, except for the other customers popping in and out for their takeout, while we waited for our food.
I can't blame anyone for not wanting to sit inside. The once cheerful room is in need of a paint job, and the employees certainly weren't encouraging anyone to sit inside what with the loud pop music they were playing. The man behind the sushi counter did not seem particularly inspired & his ingredients were haphazardly arranged in tupperware instead of prettily laid out along the glass case, so no good show there.
We ordered their chalkboard special ($19 for 6 rolls & miso soup, the rolls included yam tempura, BC roll, California roll, tuna and salmon rolls), as well as an avocado roll. The fish was fresh tasting (so I hear), the rice and avocado were perfect. They tempura yam had good flavor but could have achieved a bit more crunch had the pieces of yam been thinner. Overall the flavors and ingredients were very good, but the execution was terrible! Rolls were sliced to completely varying sizes and the rice easily fell off.
Overall I'm wavering between 2 and 3 stars. Sushi Maro has definitely gone downhill, but the flavors were still good & I'm not sure where else I'd go for takeout. -

I hadn't been to Sushi Maro for awhile. I never dine in - just do take out. The sushi special is $6.95 + tax. The sushi special is 18 pieces: california roll, tuna roll, BC roll (choice A) or yam tempura roll (choice B) and miso soup. The soup is watery, and usually not hot enough. meh.
Very quick service for take out. Open for lunch and dinner. -

Very slow service but great location. It's in front of the skytrain station!
I really liked their caterpillar rolls and the spider rolls.
They take Visa but not American Express. -

We stopped here when visiting for the Olympics and needing a place we could actually get into without waiting for hours and grab something to eat. It's got a great location in front of the Skytrain station. I was impressed by their extensive roll selection on the menu and reasonable prices. I enjoyed the Queen roll and the Unagi Dynamite roll, but there were many other options on the menu that I would love to go back to try if I lived closer. This is great for a casual sushi dinner. The service was decent and appropriately paced, even though it ended up packed during the Olympic rush.
