Review from Andy C.
The one redeeming quality about this establishment is that because I found it purely by happenstance, I had very low expectations going in. I'm proud to announce that Sushi Jade did its very best to meet these low expectations, and they were fully successful. Now, granted - you must remember that in the grand scheme of things, a 2-star rating isn't "I hate this place" or "This place is the dumps...", it's simply an affirmation of "I've had better." I have no qualms with saying that I've had better all around. Categorically:
Location: 3 out of 5
Not the most inconvenient if you are in the Falls area. Since we were staying on McLeod, and relatively close to QEW, it was at most, an 8 - 10 minute drive. Now, we found this place by accident because my curiosity got the best of me and I wanted to see what was offered at the ol' outlet mall. Well - the answer is "nothing" because we arrived at 6:30 on a Saturday and the outlet mall was CLOSED. But, not all was totally and catastrophically lost because lo and behold, across the way was Sushi Jade...
Decor: 2 out of 5
I will observe that the walls were neatly painted an um...interesting tan color. And on top of this tan paint were little shelves that had Asian-themed ornaments and trinkets. Not exactly insulting to myself or, for that matter - caucazoids, but it was reminiscent of the cheesy made-for-tv asian movies I see. The tables were laid out functionally, and all of them had a little placard that announced the table number. There didn't seem to be an attempt to make things look "nice" - but I'll have to admit that the restaurant was laid out in a way that best served the customers, as well as making life easier for the waitresses.
Service: 3 out of 5
I've seen and experienced this type of ordering before. Not to be confused with a "buffet line", Sushi Jade uses paper menus that you fill out with what you'd like. You can cross reference the paper order form with an actual printed menu with pictures to ensure that you get what you want. The paper order forms can go to any server, and your food can be brought by any server. Throughout the evening, we had about 3 different women serving us. All were fine - friendly enough, quick to bring out the food, short on small talk, and attentive with drink refills.
Quality of raw fish offerings: 2 out of 5
Uh....wow. To say that this was "average" would be somewhat of an exaggeration. It's not that any of the fish was "bad", or that it was rancid, or not fresh, or terrible - it's just that very few of the varieties actual had any flavor to them. It's a bit troubling when similar colored fish of different species all tasted equal. None of the textures blew me away, none were creamy or melt in my mouth, etc. But on the upside, none of the offerings were "bad", either.
Quality of non raw fish offerings: 3 out of 5
Actually - they had a pretty good selection of cooked and raw (non fish) items. The small fried female caplin (smelt family) was tasty, especially since they contained those delicious eggs. Seaweed salad didn't have a lot of filler, and the edamame were cooked and salted correctly. The had a few dessert offerings - mainly "deep fried milk" and various ice creams. The deep fried milk was more like a fried custard, and the ice cream offerings consisted of ginger, red been, green tea, and a few others. None of the dessert offerings were phenomenal, and I would venture to say that they were semi-forgettable. But not completely bad either, because I actually remember what I had. Get it? There also existed on the menu cooked chicken and beef items, which we did not get. Diners around us got them, and didn't seem to be dissatisfied.
Quality of condiments: 1 out of 5
I can only shake my head at this. I know that some restaurants that serve soy sauce will water it down, but never have I experienced such blatant watering down of the soy. I watched as they refilled the dispensers from a large pitcher. The color was wrong, the viscosity was wrong, and it was quite obvious that this was a cost saving measure. The same goes with wasabi. I am not sure how they were able to cut the wasabi with sugar, but they did it. Somehow they thickened poor quality and poor volume by percent wasabi with discernible sugar. *sigh*
Price: 1.5 out of 5
At 25 CAD per person in the evenings, I suppose it's not so exorbitant if you go and really make a killing on the fried fish and meat items. However, if you do enjoy sushi of all variety (sashimi, nigiri, maki, hand roll, etc. etc. etc) I believe that the pricing is blatantly on the high side.
Overall: 2 out of 5
Not much else to say. Lunch is cheaper, so maybe that'd be a better deal. There's another all you can eat gig nearby, but it's in the same plaza as an adult novelty store, so pick your poison. I'd highly recommend that you skip this place if you want a quiet and traditionally pleasant dining experience.Listed in: Places to Avoid Like the…
