I've been searching for a "go to" sushi restaurant in Vancouver (ok, Richmond, but close enough) since Shiijo turned lame and closed in Kits many years ago. After reading reviews on Sushi Hachi, we tried it tonight......and....it totally rocked!  We had the monkfish liver (think searun pâté) and the omikase, chef's special for both sushi and sashimi. My personal benchmark for a good sushi bar is whether they have mirugai (geoduck) which they do, and it was fantastic as sashimi. Tastes like ocean, in the very best way.  The toro sashimi melts in your mouth....mmmmm...getting hungry again just remembering.

The sushi chef, and I assume co-owner, is lightning fast with the knife and assembling sushi, definitely a treat to sit at the bar and watch him work.  Overall, nothing to criticize at all, not cheap, but you get what you pay for.

    Will be back often.....

When people ask  me for the best Sushi place in Richmond, It's here that I always say is the best. Especially if you sit at the counter and chat with the master behind the counter.

This place does cater to the true Japanese sushi lover.

With limited hours of operation they have a crowd of customers willing to come back anything they're open.  They know how to create a  demand for their food.

Battera sushi isn't found at all restaurants and this is one of the few that do.

Don't settle for the AYCE crap.  Let your palate mature a bit and then come here to learn about what it's really all about.

And remember folks, Sushi is just a very small part of the Japanese cuisine and this place will lead you to a grander experience and entrance into the other offerings that Japanese food has to offer.

Wow... I think this was the freshest Toro I've ever had in Vancouver.  The other elements of the sashimi special were also fresh, but the Toro was just so notable.

The black cod was also very tasty and well done - with just right amount of miso seasoning.

Overall the this place is a little out of the way and annoying that you pretty much have to reserve to get a spot here, but this is one of my new favourite sushi places in Vancouver and I'll be back to try the rest of the menu.

This small, family run restaurant serves up the freshesh sushi Richmond has to offer. It's a bit more expensive than others, but you get what you pay for.

I ordered a Sapporo and the wife had a small house sake to start off with. For the main course, it was two orders of salmon sashimi (wife loves this), unagi battera (pressed sushi), marinated toro & amaebi sushi, as well as an advocado and spicy tuna roll.

I would rate the sashimi 3.5/5. The quality was there, but there really wasn't enough of it and it was too thinly sliced. If it was just a bit thicker, you could get to enjoy the texture of it better.

The Unagi was impressive, a solid 4/5. The rice was of high quality and the unagi was the nicest I've had yet...better than Aki's and that's great in my eyes. The eel was so soft and buttery.

The toro and amaebi were excellent (4/5), but the spicy tuna roll was a little bit dissapointing. Not really spicy at all and it was not packed tightly enough. It tasted good though, but with such high expectations, I must only give it a 3/5.

This quiet place is still great in my mind and I'll have to try out others on my list before coming back here.

One of the best Sushi experiences I have ever had in Canada!

My husband and I had the pleasure of coming to this quaint little restaurant in Richmond with friends while visiting Vancouver.  Because of the limited seating, our friend had to make a reservation ahead of time to ensure that we would have a table.  (reservations are a must)

The restaurant is located in a tiny strip mall in Richmond.  The parking is off of Odlin, but the restaurant faces Cambie Road. It's a little confusing to find the restaurant after parking in the back.  The restaurant is a family business run by a cute Japanese couple.  Our reservation was at 8:00pm on a Wednesday night and there were 5 other tables occupied at the same time.

We ordered the omikase $25.00 for 10 pieces of sushi--chef's choice.  I can't remember the names of all of the fish that came out, but every single piece was fresh and soooooo delicious!  The last time I had fish this fresh was in Hawaii and in Toronto at Hiro. We paired the sushi with some cold cloudy sake that came in an adorable pink bottle. The price was definitely worth the quality! My favourite was the Ikura Salmon Roe--delicious!

Our friends also ordered the monk fish liver.  It came out sliced and looked like strips of pate.  It was topped with green onions and had a nice soy based sauce that came in it.  It was very tasty, but I couldn't get over the fact that it was part of a fish's liver.  Needless to say, the entire table (except myself) thoroughly enjoyed the fish liver.  If you're up for it, definitely give it a try!

We paired the sushi with an order of the grilled mackerel and a grilled fish head (that I don't remember the name of).  Both extremely tasty and well done.

Our last dish was the futo maki.  It was extremely tasty, but lacked the regular fixings of a futo--fake crab and that pink dehydrated fish stuff--that my Grandma used to put in the futo rolls.

Overall, Sushi Hachi is a definite must when eating Japanese food in Vancouver.  It is a refreshing change from the Izakayas and "japanese"-chinese run restaurants that frequent the Vancouver area.  We will definitely eat here again on our next visit to Vancouver!

Sushi Hachi is a Japanese sushi restaurant located in the heart of
Richmond.  Amongst a sea of Chinese food offerings and quick sushi
roll establishments, Sushi Hachi distinguishes itself with it's broad
selection of fish, focus on nigiri, and quality.

We made reservations far in advance and given the small size and word
of mouth regarding the place, it wasn't surprising to see the place
full and many spontaneous patrons turned away.

We decided to trust the chef and get both the sushi and sashimi
omakase, something I rarely do since I like choosing my own fish.

Both were nicely priced at $25 for about 10 pieces and while both were
very fresh, I liked the selection, slice size and preparation of the
    nigiri a bit more.

We also ordered ankimo and having seen some hits from the omakase, I
selected a few more, including blue fin otoro and ikura that were not
    included with the omakase.

Both were excellent and I was particularly happy to try a few
selections I've never tried, including madai and geoduck.

Overall, we had a great, albeit quiet, meal at Sushi Hachi.  Prices
were fair and the fish selection was top notch.

If you tire of the abundant Chinese food options, Sushi Hachi is
definitely a refined sushi restaurant to go to.

    Sushi Hachi accepts credit cards.

Just came back from the Sushi Hachi Japanese Restaurant.  All I think I need to say is that the meal was Fantastic, the Chef and his wife were very friendly, and I will defiantly go back again.

One issue I found is that I think it is a little overpriced by Vancouver Standards.  By any other city in North America, the price is VERY good, especially for the quality you get, however We paid $55 for 2 people and in most cases we can get away for under $30 for my Girlfriend and myself.  But overall, very good.

This place is pretty effin' good for the money and quality.  Its a truly mom & pop shop.  ie the mom answers the phone and serves.  The dad is the sushi chef.  I also saw their two lovely daughters in the side room and coming out to talk to them.

I love Anthony Bourdain, and I loved his scenes at the sushi bars of the great japanese chefs, where the sushi chef prepares individual nigiri for him and place it right in front of him.  The camera shots of the careful precise preparation and the almost adoringly precious presentation of each piece of wonderful sushi were simply too enticing.  Therefore I promised myself that I would eventually experience that kind of perfect one on one sushi chef to customer relationship.  (Ok, that sounds kinda weird, but if you watch Tony in New York or Tokyo in No Reservations or A Cook's Tour, you'll know what i mean.)

I got this experience at Sushi Hachi.  I ordered the Chef's Special Sushi combo, 10 pieces for $25.  I sat at the sushi bar, right in front of the maestro chef.  Then one by one, I watched him prepare and place each sushi on my plate.  From the first bite to the last, it was a crescendo of perfectly orchestrated flavors.   I wish I had ordered the Sashimi Combo special as well, just to compare.  You got to try it to believe it.

I also ordered the Beef Sashimi, which was only mediocre.  The best beef sashimi I've ever had was in Jeju Island, Korea, and unfortunately nothing so far has surpassed that.

The house roll looked good too.  I saw quite a lot of people ordering that, and watching the chef's precise preparation of it, I could see that it was really good.

Its just nice to see a truly honest japanese chef at work.  His little girl came to him behind the counter and was talking to him, and he was so gentle with her.

After making my sushi, he started washing some of the dishes.  I realized that it really was him and his wife from beginning to end making this restaurant work.  No one else, no servers, no dishwashers.   Most of the customers coming in that night were japanese as well.

The place was a little hard to find, its very small, maybe 500 sq feet, on Cambie street.  A dark hole in the wall with glorious authentic sashimi and sushi.

Best Japanese Sushi in Vancouver by far.

I say Japanese Sushi because this place is quite traditional with the cutting, flavour, and presentation of their fish.

I've been here 5 times now. Every time was a special occasion (only because this place is usually busy and needs to be reserved at least the day before) and every time was great.

I went to Tojo's recently and went to Sushi Hachi just a few days after. The sushi at Sushi Hachi was incredibly better. The fish was fresher AND cut better. There is only one chef at this restaurant: the owner. He works alone while his wife tends the tables.

He makes every single piece of sushi you eat and he pays attention to everything he is doing. Each piece of fish is cut at the perfect size and shape to caress the ball of rice under it.

If you look at the sushi you will notice that some of the pieces of fish have been lightly cut crosshatched to make the fish even more tender than it normally is.

The chefs special is an amazing steal at $25 for ten pieces of nigiri sushi plus one hand roll.

    Reservations are a must.

Sushi Hachi has really fresh sushi. You can find selections here you can't find anywhere else, like blue fin tuna, aji, hirame...etc. They don't offer any cooked food, there's no kitchen, only a sushi bar.  I'd go more often if it wasn't so far away and you have to make a reservation. They're always full and don't even bother going if you have more than four people. They won't be able to seat you.  It's run by a Japanese couple, as all awesome Japanese restaurants are.  It's a must try. Nothing innovative here. Just fresh fish and good sushi.

Some of the best and definitely the freshest sushi that I've had in Vancouver. Have been here several times and have enjoyed every time. The couple that run this small restaurant provide friendly and prompt service. I usually ask for which types of fish where just flow in the night before and have never been let down. It's a small place so make reservations.

You want authentic Japanese sushi, try Sushi Hachi.  It's a mom and pop operation but it's real Japanese sushi (though with prices to match).   Miso soup is made from scratch not package with fish bones flavouring the broth, oh so yum.   It's a small operation with limited serving hours but well worth taking the time to make a reservation.  Their fish arrives daily so you know it's good.

Came up from Seattle to try Hachi, which was recommended by my friend.  All I have to say is EXCELLENT SUSHI! This was probably the freshest fish I have had in my life.  My girlfriend and I spent about a $100 for both of us.  Average price for nigiri was about $3/piece, which is about normal for fresh, good sushi.  There is only 2 people working here, the waitress and the sushi chef, so dont expect spectacular service, since she is busy serving, taking orders, and even washing dishes! I will definitely come back here soon!! Well worth it!
