When I'm Budget San Diego and have an itch for sushi, I think of Sushi Deli 2. This place is great and I am pleased with all the special sushi options so here goes.

The Good: sushi deli always have good specials on food. The drink special of a Large Sapporo and Sake is dope too. Service is quick and honestly, it is the all around best bang for your buck. I always end up over ordering the following: San Diego Roll, 7 Spices Seared Tuna roll, pan fried gyoza, miso soup and two drink specials. AND sometimes i'm sharing. I know  people criticize the service at SD2, but with my experience with going with large groups, the accomodations that are made are above satisfactory.

The Bad: Sushi Deli 2 is in downtown SD and parking can be tricky if you are not working in the area. If parking is not an issue, large groups beware of the wait. It can be rather cramped.

    Advice: Go early and often.

Verdict: recommend to all, mob deep.

just came back from lunch at sushi deli 2.  it was the first and probably the last time i will dine there.

if all you care about is cheap, this is the place for you!  the entire menu is inexpensive.  rolls are from $6-9.  you can get lunch specials from $5-8.  and how could i forget .99 cent bud lights all day long!  however, the food and service combined are two stars at best.

i asked the waitress to make a recommendation between the sesame chicken and udon soup.  her response was "wow, those are 2 completely different things... what are you in the mood for?"  she was no helpful whatsoever in recommending a dish.  thanks lady.

i ended up getting the sesame chicken and added a miso soup, since i read it's good here.  i have to say, the miso soup is delicious.  they add tempora flakes which gives it a little crunch.  it's different from your typical miso soups.  however, there was no tofo to be found.  the sesame chicken came with a side salad with the usual thousand island-ish dressing, which was fine.  i did not expect the chicken to be deep fried chicken strips with sauce randomly poured on.  i guess i should have asked how it was prepared but i did not enjoy all of that fried chicken on my plate.  finally, the ca roll was mushy.

another waiter took our money at the end of the meal.  he came back with the wrong amount of change.  when we corrected him, he walked away and loudly yelled "SORRY" over his shoulder.  so much for quality service.

like i said above, come here if all you care about is cheap!  but be forewarned - you get what you pay for.

    Great lunch spot!

Located in Downtown San Diego, walking distance from my office, this place is worth going to. Affordable, big bentos! A bit tight with table seating but for me the food was worth it. Will definitely add this to my regular list.

This was a great find!  I was shopping at the Westfield Horton Plaza and found myself in need of some lunch.  A quick yelp! search led me to Sushi Deli 2.  They were bustling, but I still felt I got plenty of attention.  They had excellent lunch specials, but as a lady used to being landlocked, I knew that I had to get a large amount of sushi and went for one of their combination trays.  It came with around 8 pieces of nigiri, an entire rainbow roll, a couple of pieces of cucumber roll, and a salad.  And the sum total was (drumroll, please) $14.  Sushi tasted fresh and you can't beat the prices.

This gem is definitely not hidden as the lines at lunch are literally out the door.   The prices are great and the sushi is very tasty as well.   Maybe not the highest quality sushi, but at this price it is well worth it.

Came here with an old Vancouverite friend so we know sushi.  This place is definitely  average at most for taste and quality.  Prices are definitely pretty good but comparable to the quality of the food.  What is great are the drink prices.  We got a full carafe of plum wine (my fave) for $12.95!!!---can't beat that!!!  We ordered 5 nigiri pieces, 4 large specialty sushi rolls, and 2 seaweed salads and we could not finish the equivalent of 2 sushi rolls.  I have had better sushi but I have also had worse but the Sushi Deli 2 prices can't be beat in San Diego.

You get what you paid for: comparatevely cheap sushi with warm green tea/ sake, decent service and about 20 more people waiting in line ahead of you to obtain the same. But there're some nice things in their menu which I want to  catch your eyes: Fried tofu as an appetizer and "mango, lettice and tofu rolls" (however it sounds way plain, it's very refreshing). I've noticed the offered cuisine is indulgently huge, so you have to come back to try everything.

Heard SD natives come here a lot, so decided to join the fun! I like that there is a poppin' bar there for the wait since the wait was almost 1 hour! The prices are super good for sushi and they are not shady with their ingredients. There are deals for the sake so go for that.

The rolls were around 6-10 dollars which is pretty good. Their sides are around 3-6 dollars.
    1) Garlic edamame- delicious much?! Love garlic!
    2) Miso soup- DEFINITELY A GOOD ONE! They add crispies and onions in there which makes it so flavorful and adds texture
    3) Most of the rolls are good as well. I liked the baked ones, but most included something spicy so the Poseidon Roll was a refresher.
    4) Garlic Beef- delicious
    5) Mixed poke- They cut the different fishes into small parts on top of a bed of seaweed salad and lettuce salad. Delicious.

All in all, great meal with tons of food for 4 and only totaled up to $60.

    Sushi Deli in my belli!

    Sushi Deli 2
    SD: Downtown
    5pm Wednesday 11th April 2012
    Three Stars

Showing up at 5pm and there was already a line out the door.  We were seated rather quickly.  They even let us still at a rickety old booth even though there was just two of us.  I ordered the Shogun ($12): 8 Piece Rainbow Roll, 2 Pieces of Cucumber Roll, then nigiri: Shrimp, Tuna, Salmon, Salmon Roe, Yellowtail, Eel, and Sea Urchin.  The seafood was of a great quality.  The rice was dry, too compressed, and way out of portion to the amount of fish.

Bliss Wheel Co Owner Mike ordered 10 piece Sashimi Plate for $9.  The sashimi pieces were huge and quite tasty.

A Decent Meal for a Decent Price.

The saving grace for this place is $1 BudLight drafts at lunch. And good cold sake.

I've had much better sushi and much better service. Tables are the most cramped, might as well have a long table with benches.

They gave us the check and asked us to pay. They were closing to get ready for dinner. Seriously? You just closed your doors, there's no buffer period of letting your patrons finish?

    MISO
The best I've ever had. The miso is light and flavorful, but the special thing is the tempura they put in the miso. Bits of crunchy tempura make this my favorite miso ever.

    SASHIMI 10 piece
We got 3 salmon, 3 tuna, yellowtail and albacore. All were delicious but the salmon and tuna were best. All were thick cuts of fresh fish.

    BAKED MUSSELS
Very very good. Warm mussels with great flavor.

    NINJA ROLL
Good solid roll with delicious jalapeño to give it a nice kick. It had plenty of extra jalapeño so that I could put on top of other rolls as well.

    PRICES
Extremely decent. Rolls were $6-7 and even the sashimi were great prices.

I WILL NEVER GO BACK TO SUSHI DELI!

I first visited sushi deli 2 three years ago before the remodel.  This was my go to sushi place because of the price and quality of the food.  My husband and I loved this place for date night. The  past couple of times we visited, we had been disappointed with the quality of our food and the quality of the service. We stopped going for a while thinking it might just be a phase.

This past week we returned to sushi deli hoping to get some affordable and tasty sushi. We did not get that at all.  True the prices are reasonable but the sushi made me want to barf! The rice tasted old, the wasabi was hard as a rock, and every bite tasted like we were consuming dirty sea water. I was curious as to why this was the case so I asked a friend of mine (who works for a sushi bar) what might have contributed to the horrible taste of the sushi.  Turns out sushi deli stores pre-made rolls due to the high volume of customers. The rolls are not fresh and the quality of the fish is low grade (hence the low price).

I once loved this place; however, needless to say...I will no longer be a customer and I will no longer be recommending this place to my friends.

Oh, the Sushi Deli 2.  I make sure I eat here every time I visit San Diego.

I love fresh seafood as much as the next person.  Those with the most delicate of palates, the self-described 'sushi snobs,' usually know better than to come here.  They won't hesitate to bitch it up on Yelp, however, if they do.

I could describe myself as a seafood snob; I've lived in coastal regions my entire life.  Grew up by the Great Lakes, childhood vacations spent at a fishing lodge in Canada.  Ate fish at least 4 times a week thanks to fishermen grandpa and dad.  The absolute BEST seafood dishes ever had?  Tie between the diver scallops at CUT in the Beverly Wilshire (2008), and seafood medley at Konoba Menego on Hvar Island, Croatia (2009).

    But I digress.

Is the fish at SDII the freshest?  No.  If you are that super-squeemish, or just very unsure, order a non-traditional roll, er, something cooked.  Tempura-battered something.  The reason the crowds love Sushi Deli 2 is the pricing, and the mountain of food presented to you.  Come hungry.

The sauces accompanying the teriyaki bento boxes are wonderful.  Sugary sweet soul food.

    Beer specials OOH YEAH!

The sushi.  It'll do the trick.  I've had surprisingly fresh fish here, so don't believe all the haters.   Good sushi at great pricing.

Can't beat the prices & service!!

Awesome miso soup with bits of tempura to make my tastebuds scream with joy!

    10 piece SASHIMI
we tried salmon, tuna, yellowtail & albacore. Large chunks...not the freshest I've had, but still good thick cuts of fish.

    BAKED MUSSELS
broiled with a spicy mayo....super yummy...loved the sauce so much I started to dip all the other rolls in it instead of my wasabi/soy sauce.

    NINJA ROLL
Inside: spicy tuna & shrimp tempura. Topped with: soy paper, red snapper, crab surimi, jalepeno & spicy mayo.

Greatest thing about this place is their service...especially when my cousin and I were so caught up in our conversation that we just got up and didn't pay our bill!! Yup that's right....we were those a**holes!!  When we got back to our hotel, we realized what happened, but they were already closed so we went back the next day to settle our tab. The staff was so nice and apologized to us and called them their heroes....so crazy considering we were the jerks...but definitely nice to be greeted back with such smiles.

Went to Wet Willies on Sunday and asked the bartender for a good sushi place in downtown.  She sent us here.  Came in with 7 people and got seated within15 minutes.  The service was great!  Our server was super nice to us and even got us another table to add to ours so we could have more space for our party.  I'm not sure what all of us ordered, but for the price, it was definitely worth it.  The prices were way cheaper than I was expecting.

Teriyaki plate was average.  Edamame had a good amount of sea salt on it.  The miso soup had something extra in it but couldn't tell what.  It was still good though.  Deluxe combo was delicious.  I think it had a Katie roll, Keith roll, Kaley roll and an Ensenada roll.  The San Diego roll was good.  The ninja roll was good.  The Navava roll was good too.

I would definitely go back just for the prices.  It's hard to find places that are cheap with better than mediocre food.

I don't come to Downtown San Diego that often (mainly cause of the parking) but restaurants like the SUSHI DELI 2 might change all that.

I've heard from friends that this restaurant serves excellent sushi, so me being the one up for the challenge (not that there is a challenge), had to try this place out...and believe me, I wasn't disappointed.

I came here with a co-worker of mine and when we got there, I have to admit, we were a little intimidated by the long line just to get into the place (there was like 10 people/parties in front of us.) For a lot of parties in from of us, it really didn't take long to get inside. One of the things that impressed me, was the nice "Chill" atmosphere inside...so laid back and people having a good time. The decor is nice and hip and the waitress was pretty helpful in helping us decide what to get for lunch.

For starters, I wanted something different. Our waitress recommended something called "The Vampire." This sushi was loaded with garlic, both inside and out and had a spicy "cheese whiz" topping on top of it. It had a very unique flavor and to be honest, pretty fun to eat. I must add that the sushi here at SUSHI DELI 2 is pretty good sized and the sushi alone could have filled me up...it's a good thing I shared it with a co-worker.

Our waitress also recommended "The Lunch Specials." The lunch specials are basically BENTO BOXES with a lot of food inside of it. One of the first impressions you get when you see one of the lunch specials is, "This Thing is Huge," and it's pretty cheap. They range from $5.75 - $6.99, depending on what you want.

    I ordered LUNCH SPECIAL C.
This consisted of Teriyaki Chicken, 2 pieces of Chicken Breast Tempura, 2 pieces of Shrimp Tempura, 2 pieces of Vegetable Tempura, 2 Gyoza's, 4 California Rolls and a Side Salad. This lunch special was huge...and it's hard to believe that it only cost $6.99.

Overall, places like the SUSHI DELI 2 have made me rethink differently about eating out for lunch in Downtown San Diego. This place is EVERYTHING my friends told me about this place.

Would I come here again? Yes! This place hit 5 Stars in every category I like to review a restaurant (Taste, speed of service, cleanliness of the place, atmosphere of the people around you, friendliness of the people that work there and price).
WAY TO GO "SUSHI DELI 2!!!"

I would definitely rather go here than Sushi Deli 3. I have yet to go to Sushi Deli 1.

3 words - San Diego Roll! with a side of spicy mayo. Mm mm mm delicious..inside, you got the lobster mix with cream cheese. & on top, some spicy tuna, crab surimi, crunchies, topped with spicy mayo, spicy sauce, and sweet sauce. You get a lot so its totally worth the ~8 bucks. The picture they show on the menu doesn't make it look all that good but trust me, the SD roll is worth trying if you like it warm and crunchy.

Been here several times and always had a satisfying experience. There are a few realities one must succumb to in order to find satisfaction at Sushi Deli... #1 it's not going to be authentic sushi. This is a spicy mayo-baked roll-tempura-ed out kind of place. It is glorious in it's own right. There is a reason they are able to keep the prices so low. #2 you will have to wait no matter what time of day you come #3 Don't expect good or speedy service. These waiters know the absolute bare bones of serving and get the job done, maybe not with much finesse, but again, its getting the job done.

#4 there is no such thing as a manager at Sushi Deli. I know this because on my last visit the busser was bringing a pint glass to our table, hand carried :/ , when he slipped and the glass went flying out of his hand, hitting our table and showering me with broken glass. Gingerly I started removing little shards of glass from my clothing, creases of my arms and hands. I even had glass all up on my sandaled feet which I found out after I stood up and crunched down on a broken-glass-bare-foot-scenario. Although the busser apologized profusely and brought us new drinks and swiftly cleaned the table, I would have appreciated a table touch by some kind of authority figure apologizing for making me bleed while innocently eating my $3.75 hot hot california roll.

Anyways, it is likely that I will return to Sushi Deli but will continue to have an irrational fear of pint glasses seeking vengeance for their lost brethren.

If you're searching for variety in your Sushi at a reasonable price, then look no further. Sushi Deli 2 is just an all around great place to eat. The service has always been friendly and the place is full of energy as it is usually very busy. That may also contribute to the only reason that I didn't give this place a 5 star rating. The food and service is always 5 star quality, but the tends to be a bit long, even when I put my name down long before I have arrived. In fact if the wait was just about 15 minutes shorter on average, then this place would be the PERFECT place to eat. Other than that, the food is plentiful, inexpensive, and delicious.

Upon my last visit I ordered the vegetarian bento, as I gave up meat for lent, and I couldn't even put half of it away. I highly recommend it whether you are a meat-eater or not because the batter on the tofu and tempura is fantastic. Plus you can't go wrong with miso soup, Japanese style salad, and mountain of steamed rice,  which also come with the meal. All this food for just over 10 dollars with tip, tax, and a drink (a nice strong hot green tea).

I will be back to Sushi Deli 2, and if I get lucky enough to be suited in a decent amount of them then I may just bump up my rating after my next visit.

    delicatessen (dl-k-tsn)
    n.
    1. A shop that sells cooked or prepared foods ready for serving.
    2. Ready-to-serve foods such as cheeses, cold cooked meats, and salads

Sorry (womp womp) you are not a Deli..

I cant think of a more overrated restaurant downtown.
Not that Sushi Deli is bad, just totally and completely over freaking rated.

    Crunchies in my miso soup?
No thanks.... I'm good.  90% of your rolls already have them..

On a positive note, once seated the sushi does come to the table quickly and the servers are nice.

Here are some name change suggestions..

    -Sushi by the slice

I never wanted to come here for lunch before bc I would always see this massive line of people outside, but lo and behold they have a take-out counter! If you're coming in for lunch (11a-2p), do yourself a favor and SKIP the line and just go directly inside. I always get my food to-go now & they have great lunch specials, my favorite is the 4x4 combo (4 pieces each of tempura roll, rainbow roll, spicy tuna, & eel) -- also comes w/a salad & soup or a drink.

If you work in downtown or are just in the area, this is a great add to the usual lunch rotation -- good portions, friendly prices, & remember, skip the line!

You certainly get what you pay for and this was no exception.  I always saw crowds at lunch time and finally ventured in one day.  Cheap sushi. So-so taste and quality.  I would never recommend this place to anyone who is craving sushi or any so-called "sushi snobs," but you can't beat the price if all you're looking for is a reasonably healthy yet inexpensive lunch.  *Reasonably healthy assumes you don't order any of the heavily battered, deep fried items sitting in the foil covered chafing dishes behind the to-go register or the gooey, greasy chicken bowls I saw other patrons enjoying.

I have no idea how this place has good reviews! This is probably some of the worst sushi I have ever had. I had a calamari tuna roll and the calamari inside was like a rock. I couldn't even eat my roll and asked the server if i could order something different. She was helpful trying to find me something i would like, but the next roll was not that much better than the first. The restaurant is also dirty, trash on the floor, not very appealing. It's been ages since I've been here so when I got called up for ye old jury duty, I decided to give it a go for old times sake.  Sushi Deli 2, you disappointed me.

The good:  Your miso soup is still the bomb and I give you mad props for your playlist.  The staff was on top of it for the busy lunch rush and I was in and out with time to head over to CVS for some mints and a leisurely stroll back to the courthouse.  This is what gets them a third star.  Food alone is a two star show.

The meh:  I ordered garlic edamame, salmon skin hand roll, posidon roll, nagiri - hamachi, shiro maguro, sake, and masago.

The edamame was soaked in the soy sauce based sauce which made a quarter of it inedible and the garlic was almost raw.  Now I like me some garlic, but it just didn't work.  Next time, just dress the edamame and put it in the bowl without pouring in the sauce and perhaps cook the garlic a bit more.  Have had way better elsewhere.

The salmon skin was a bit overcooked so it was just dry instead of being succulent and crunchy at the same time.

The posidon roll was just eh.  Nothing about it really stood out.

The nagiri: Mostly tastless.  Even the sake and hamchi were only slightly buttery.

The wtf?!?: No bar?  Really?  No Sashimi combo?  With tastless fish I guess it's a good thing because I would have been even more disappointed.

Also, I really do question these places that do not have saba on the menu.  It's always when I'm craving that I end up in a place without it.  *harumpf*

It's definitely not going to be the best sushi you have ever had but for the price that you pay, you do feel pretty good afterwards. There were four of us here, we put our name in and waited about 45 minutes. The place was overflowing with people. And the music was loud. It was like a very busy club at which you happened to be eating. After we were seated we had our drink orders taken. The drink special of one large sapporo and one sake is only $5.50. Quite the bargain. There was sushi all around but I ended up getting the most sushi because sushi is my mistress.

I had a Hawaiian Roll, a Caterpillar Roll and some roll that I can't remember (take from that what you will). The soy paper here is orange which I find disconcerting. The rolls were decent but like I said, nothing that's super exciting or really worth getting too pumped over. I was still craving sushi after and I have a strong feeling that the regular sushi (not the rolls) is probably of below average quality but I can't be certain as I did not have any. Our waiter was nice, funny and decently efficient based on how crowded the place was.

What I like most about it was that even though there were four drinks, and a rough total of seven rolls the bill was just over $60. That's pretty mind blowing to me. I really appreciated their supremely decent pricing. So definitely, if you want to eat till you explode and not spend too much money this IS the place for you. If you have a lot of money and good expectations for your sushi then skip the wait, pay more and feel happier.

Favorite restaurant in downtown San Diego. Always a long wait but always worth it. Fun atmosphere with cheap beer and sushi. The staff is always awesome and the sushi never lets me down. Make sure to try the garlic edamame!

Ok Ok, so we all know that this is pretty CHEAP sushi (no more than 6.99 for rolls that have raw fish in it, typically 3-4 for fushion rolls, 2.95 for green muscles, 3 for calarmri, etc). Going into the knowledge that it's cheap and you get cheap beer and cheap drinks (.99 for fountain), that saying, the food was not bad for the price. I mean the saying is you get what you pay for. And well.....

I wouldn't say this is amazing or delicious sushi, it's just ok and decent for the price and the fun. The atmosphere is very sports bar like, it's loud, it's crowded, and the tables are tiny, but the people are nice, the food isn't bad, and you're full.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE everything about Sushi Deli!  not only do they have a wide variety of japanese cuisine, they have a fusion mix in there as well.  Their rolls are AWESOME, AMAZING, and AFFORDABLE!  They also have these big bottles of sake that goes for only $27 a pop!  Our group of seven with tons of beer and sake and food only cost $160.  So usually places like that you think the quality of the fish is lowered - NOT at Sushi Deli though!  I wish they had a sushi deli in Norcal!  I specifically liked their combination appetizer platter, which has calamari, chicken karage, and gyozas with a few yummy sauces.  I honestly recommend you trying ALL their rolls if you can at one time or another. Their Poke Salad is good too... Go ahead and order their sashimi... you'd be suprised with the great quality!

Oh and if you are going for drinks... either get that BIG bottle of sake, or you can get a nice beer and house sake deal as well )

Minus one star for the hour long wait...

I went here almost a year ago, forgetting about it until now....perhaps that says something about how I feel about Sushi Deli. Anyways. Decent prices for decent sushi. Spicy tuna roll and satsuki roll were good sized, fish was alright. Would rather go to Masuo in Solana Beach if looking for a truly awesome sushi experience.

This was recommended by a local as the best bang for your buck sushi in San Diego. It lived up to the billing. My sushi experience is relatively limited, and the places I've lived are not exactly sushi hotbeds, so I found their menu to be quite extensive. In addition to a couple of rolls, we had the spicy tuna poppers.

All in all, I wish there was a place like this down the street from where I live.

My last review for Sushi Deli 2 was flagged by the "yelp" community because it did not contain a new firsthand experience with the business.

The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has just approved and released some
tuna from a new source into the US food market.

They are also allowing it to be sold as "sushi" grade.
    It is far from it.
I wouldn't use it for tuna salad.
    It looks like tuna that died at sea, washed ashore;
then a couple days later someone
cut it up and froze it.

    KNOWING THIS!!!,
I didn't eat the tuna at Sushi Deli.
    You can.  Have at it.

I GOT the chicken teriyaki. It is one star worthy

It was one star all the way.

Sushi Deli 2 is a lot better than 3.  All in all, they're the same restaurant but the reasons I say this one is a lot better is because the service here is a lot faster.  I think maybe because a lot more people come to this Sushi Deli, but they really got it down in terms of speed.

Parking downtown may be a pain but we usually park at Horton Plaza and get free 3 hour validation.

The sushi & sashimi was AWESOME.  The Price was AMAZING.  We ordered a san diego roll and a deluxe roll and for three girls - we could not finish it.  The service was not great (therefore only 4 stars).  Our waitress didn't really seem to care that we were there and never checked on us after receiving our food.  We split some soy/sashimi and finally we had to flag down another waitress who just said she'll grab our server which resulted in us waiting another five minutes for her to even come by to bring us napkins.  A little annoying, but she did replace the dropped sashimi for free.

Let me start out by saying I used to love this place!!!  I have been eating at sushi deli for over two years and I have seen the quality go down drastically and its not just this location but all three.  I realize there is always going to be a long wait and that's all just part of the sushi deli experience.

My fiance and I always start out with garlic edamame that used to be to die for... now its not.  It used to be an amazing garlic glaze over the edemame, now its a watery slightly garlicy sauce over usually overcooked edamame.  Another thing is that i will order it about 10 minutes before the rolls but the edamame will still get there after the rolls which to me defeats the purpose of edamame.

second... the San Diego is one of our regular rolls and we used to love it but lately its been borderline disgusting.  It tastes like it sits in the window for about an hour after frying till it gets to our table.

I am done ranting but i would really like to see sushi deli go back to when i first started eating here.  I haven't given up on this place but they need to regroup and realize their quality has gone down drastically.
