Review from Ag T.
Burnaby, BC
I came here for the first time on a Sunday night after volleyball playoffs so I was ravenous! We had a party of 9 and they didn't take reservations. The wait wasn't long even though the restaurant was packed and there were other people waiting as well. It was about 15 minutes just as the hostess promised.
The menu is quite inclusive of your usual japanese sushi restaurants with a good selection of rolls, nigiri, sashimi, appetizers and cooked food.
On my side of the table we had tuna tataki, salmon sashimi, toro sashimi, negihama roll, spicy tuna tempura roll, crunch house roll, deep fried asparagus roll and dragon roll. The best things we had out of that selection were the toro sashimi and dragon roll. The other items were great as well. No complaints.
Service is pretty good, as the restaurant is busy with numerous take-out orders being processed. We didn't have to wait long to give our orders or for the food to come out.
The value is great as well. It came out to $17 per person including tax and tip.
I agree with the other reviewers who remarked about the parking lot. It's cramped and decided to park on the street and walk a little. I would definitely return should I be in the neighborhood. -
Review from Aaron S.
I'm rolling it down a star because while Sushi California is good, it's not nearly as good as it used to be. The Tuna Gomae while tasty is no longer as big as it was and everything just seemed a bit off from what made me like it all these years. I'm sure it was just this visit so maybe I'll up it again at a future date.
It's one of the better value places around and there is no shortage of people who go here. They have to be doing something right. The service is always friendly and as prompt as it can be when its always so busy.
Should you attempt to park your car here you deserve a medal for bravery. -

Hmm, my last experience here was a little disappointing. Don't get me wrong, it's still good value, but the quality wasn't as awesome as the other times I had been. Therefore, I must dock a star.
Also, their agedashi tofu was made with pretty solid pieces, and I like my tofu puffy. I'm pretty sure I had had it here before and it was different, but I could be mistaken.Listed in: Cheap, Reliable Eats in the…

We took our out of town guests here. What a mistake! Sushi California was extremely busy with crazy parking. When we were finally seated, we ordered our food and when the sushi came, it was very sloppily made. They didn't roll the sushi tight enough that some of them were falling apart. The sushi was okay, but they put too much rice in their rolls. We just ate the raw fish part and left the rice uneaten. There is no ambiance inside. I can't understand why this place always seems to be crowded when I drive by at night. I guess people just don't know what good suchi is suppose to taste like. I will never eat here again.

after 2 years, i am back!!! It has been tooo long~ Usually I don't eat at restaurants alone (I just get take out) but this time I had to make an exception. Literally a few hours before I had to go to the airport, I made my way to Sushi california to stuff my face.
I ordered:
Alaska roll - as good as i remembered. the roll did fall apart and they skimped on the sauce and salmon. But the combination is still mind blowing!
Toro nigri - pretty good (and fresh)
Saba Nigri - . It was very lemony and firm but had texture of cerviche almost like it was cooked. I can;t decide if i like it
Deluxe Chirashi - I can't believe what i got for a mere $14!!! I got 3 pieces of salmon, 2 pieces hamachi, 2 pieces red snapper, 3 pieces albacore tuna, 4 tiny amaebi, 1 giant scallop, 2 tako, 1 surf clam and tobiko. That is over 15 pieces!!
The salmon, hamachi, red snapper, scallops and amaebi were very good. All fresh and firm w/o a hint of sliminess.
I didnt care much for the octopus/tako or albacore. The albacore were huge spoon size steaks but a tad too mushy for me.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Review from Inna B.
Do you love sushi and happen to be in the area? Go to Sushi California and order the Salmon and Tuna Don. Or the Salmon. Or the Tuna. Or some rolls. Or sashimi. Or nigiri. It doesn't matter - it's ALL good.
We found ourselves in the parking lot on accident and only lingered because my iPhone picked up some free wi-fi. SUPER USEFUL! The outside didn't look very enticing, but we noticed it was packed and a lot of the customers were Asian. I glanced at the Yelp reviews and saw that they were quite good.
So we headed inside and waited about 5 minutes for a table. There were a lot of servers working (mostly female and Asian) and they were very, very efficient. They came by to check on the status of our cup of tea about every 5 minutes!
As for the food, the food was... oh my goodness good. I ordered the tuna and salmon don, and the pieces of fish were thick and tasted exactly like they should. PERFECT. We also got a spicy tuna spring roll (or something like that), and that was tasty and beautiful. (See photos.) I really liked the little green "trees" that made the roll look especially pretty. I didn't have any of the avocado roll because I was full and really don't like avocado, but that was a SUPER avocado roll. So much bigger than we expected! The person that ate it said it was a bit overwhelming at first, but still enjoyed it... and enjoyed the leftovers even more about 2 hours later after it was briefly refrigerated.
Upon tasting the salmon/tuna, my dining partner said "People I know that love sushi would say this is what good sushi is supposed to taste like."
Total for two miso soups, one salmon & tuna don, a veggie combo or something like that, an avocado roll, a spicy tuna spring roll, and probably 10 cups of (complimentary) tea was about $28. Two people got very full and the food was fantastic, so the price is definitely good!!
The dinner was great and left me thinking that I'm both sad and relieved that I don't live in the same city as Sushi California. I'm so glad I found this place on my brief visit!Listed in: Favorite Spots in 2011, Visiting Canada

Burnaby, BC
The food was fine but I ate some fish sushi and got quite sick. not hospital sick, but still sick, about an hour and a half after eating. the rolls i had were too loose and falling apart, and i thought there was too much rice. i had a spider roll, negitoro roll and spicy tuna roll. just my two cents - would've loved to like it since it's close to my home, but i'm afraid i won't ever go back if it means i might get sick again. i can say with certaintly it was caused by that - i hadn't eaten anything else for hours.
i don't really know what do exactly when i get sick after eating somewhere - it's only happened once or twice before. do i call them to tell it? do i let anyone else know? at least with yelp, there's a way to air a fair warning. -

This place nails it all. Price, quantity/portion, and quality
Fresh sashimi, sushi and rolls and udon :D
I especially love their spicy tuna sashimi. They are super busy all the time and I almost knocked off a star because it does take a little while to get the food (seems even longer when getting it to go) but considering how busy and crowded this place gets, the staff are friendly and they do try their best to have people fed asap but don't try to usher you out to seat the next person (if you are waiting to get a seat, it might be annoying :P)
Horrible parking though.. they have the tiniest parking lot ever.
Some people complained about the warm rice and rolls falling apart but I've been there at least 15 times but didn't really notice it that much..
Of course the quality isn't gonna be as good as the fancy Jap restaurants downtown, but considering how Sushi California charges only a fraction of the price, I think they deserve the 4 stars.
Sorry I wanted to give you guys 5 stars but had to take one off because your parking lot is bad. really bad. I normally wouldn't take off stars just because of such things, but it is so bad that I just had to make it 4 stars. -
Review from Joshua N.
You can't give half stars, can you? No? Ok. 3 stars then. But I'd like to give somewhere between 2 and 3.
2 stars because the sushi was falling all over the place. I am an expert with chopsticks (Mr. Miagi would be proud), but I could not pick up a single piece of sushi -- neither nigiri nor maki -- without it collapsing into a heap on my plate. Maybe this is because the rice was too warm? In any case it was difficult to eat and difficulter to enjoy properly.
3 stars because the variety was acceptable, the ingredients were fresh, and the agedashi dofu (deep-friend tofu cubes in an oniony-soy marinade) was not scaldingly hot when it was served.
2 stars because nothing that was supposed to be spicy was actually spicy.
3 stars because we ordered exactly one plethora of sushi and it only came to $24 incl tax and tip for two people.
2 stars because it was crowded and there was no parking.
3 stars because the staff was very friendly and accommodating and didn't rush us out even though there were obviously people waiting for tables (hey, I got there first).
I put 3 stars up at the top, because I'm feeling karmically inclined today and because I prefer to give them the benefit of the doubt. Maybe they had an off night. -

Last minute lunch with my man...I had taught a class earlier in the day and needed a good protein fix.
They lost a yelp star due to the fact they don't offer wild salmon!! You would think this day and age, most - if not all - have wild or sockeye salmon on their menu!
I decided to go for the spicy tuna don and an order of gommae. My bf just had a beef teriyaki roll.
The spicy tuna don was huge!!! and very good! Spicy & sweet, just the way I like it. I wish I was able to finish it, it was so delicious! I wish I didn't get the gommae! It was watery and runny...not good, didn't finish it either.
Service was mediocre, no one was rude--but with the mad lunch rush, i guess it can't be expected to be stellar.
will come back for spicy tuna don fix again. =)Listed in: Jappy Sushi Eats!

Burnaby, BC
Quantity over quality.
I've tried this place a few times hoping it would be better. But sushi is still served with warmish rice, because it's so busy. The portions are huge if that's what you're looking for. Warm rice is no good, because it begins to cook the sashimi.
I ordered the chirashi sushi last time I was there (photo uploaded) and it's pretty but fairly simple. Nothing special, just all the average salmon, tuna, tako, hokkigai, ebi served on a bed of rice with lettuce. I have better salmon and tuna in my freezer so gave mine to my friend to take home.
My husband had the spicy tuna combo which is apparantly incredible (large portion). They have sashimi and the roll and tons of it.
I've given this place a couple tries, and I don't think I'll be back. -

Bought some takeout yesterday... Got the Spicy Tuna Sashimi Don and an Assorted Deluxe Sashimi.
The Spicy Tuna Sashimi is like crack. Seriously. It's curiously awesome.
The Assorted Sashimi was quite good as well. It had three pieces of all things except for the scallop which was one scallop split into two.
I have yet to find a place that has better Spicy Tuna Sashimi.Listed in: If we date long enough, I'll…, Things To See. People To Do., Eric's ROTDs

Best Bang for the Buck!
OMG, the pieces of sushi and sashimi here are enormous!!! Each piece is double the size of a normal piece of sushi or sashimi that you would find at a Japanese restaurant downtown.
My client took me here for lunch and it did not disappoint.
Get there before 1230pm or you'll be waiting. -

"Meh. I've had better"
That basically sums up my experience at Sushi California.
This place is OK, its relatively clean with adequate service.
The sushi in my opinion is below par though. It may be served in large portions, but was disappointing.
The rice was warm which warms the fish. Fail!
Portion and pricing does not equal a good dining experience.
This place will do in a bind or late night snack but I would not go out of may way to go here again.
California Sushi fits well into the lower mainlands trend of rating below average sushi establishments high. 4-5 stars??? Are you crazy? -
Review from Earl A.
Not sure how this ranks as a $$ place. I would say $. Some of the best value for sushi in the lower mainland. California roll for less than $3 for 8 pieces and good size. Some of their customer rolls were a little too big and as a result fell apart on occasion. Overall, I'd definitely go back again. Big screen TV for some entertainment and they take your order on an iPad and it comes out quickly.

In the same fashion of Sushi Town, Sushi California offers large portions at cheap prices. But the kicker is their SPICY TUNA SASHIMI! They use a special kind of spicy sauce which makes it delicious and it's mixed with cucumbers. Yum! I can never finish it but always try.
Since this place is obviously popular with locals and non-locals alike, there's usually a line but it moves fairly quick. Still, I'd recommend going during non-peak hours! -
Review from Raymond O.
Vancouver, BC
I enjoyed this place for it's overall value. The name reminded me of a place I frequented back in, umm, California called "California Roll Factory" in LA.
With the obvious name reference, they specialise in serving California-style sushi rolls. I wouldn't say excelled in it, but it definitely is a great alternative than going all the way South for your fix.
What earns it 4 stars is the commendable quality relative to it's pricing and serving size. Service is fast and they do crank out readily available rolls which surprisingly has good soft rice that hasn't been hardened from refrigeration.
The obvious choice is to go with their various concoction of sushi rolls. But they do have decent raw fish varieties and Donburi selections that are worth trying out.
Best to go off-hours as the line up can be pretty brutal especially if you have to trek all the way to Burnaby. -
Review from Kailyn C.
Coquitlam, BC
Sushi California is one of my joints in the neighborhood.
They simply serve large and delicious portions of Sushi for half the cost of other competitors.
I think their star item would have to be their sashimi first and then their sushi second. Their seafood is super fresh (my dad just raves about the Tuna Toro) and tasty. As a tribute, instead of going to an upscale sushi restaurants in downtown, we've even brought friends (from overseas) with the most discriminating taste buds to try the Sashimi & Taros and they loved it.
Having said that though, the restaurant is quite small and it can get extremely busy during lunch and dinner hours. The atmosphere can also be quite lively and chaotic with the servers running around. However, with the extra acceleration, they do an excellent job with bringing food quickly to the table.
Just a few tips:
- Parking can be frustrating at times because the lot is so limited, I always have to park a little "further like to McDs ;) " and walk the walk.
- If you like smoke salmon and cream cheese together, definitely try the Smoked Salmon Roll
- The House green salad has this really amazing dressing which I love.
- For a different kick, order the Spicy Tuna Sashimi, but ask them to use Salmon instead.
Bon Appetit! -
Review from Merdy T.
You got what you paid for from this place. You'll get yellowtail sashimi with a superb quality for around 15 bucks, and a plate of very addicting hokkigai clam for around 9 bucks. The rolls are good but not outstanding.
I'd say that I'll go back to this place and drive for a max of 55 mins for the sashimi, but I won't drive more than 20 minutes for the sushi. -

I swear I have to go to this place once a week. Big slices of sashimi, not the sad thin kind that other places give you. Love their double spice tuna roll and Salmon/Tuna sashimi don. Sometimes can get way too busy though, especially on the weekend.

New Westminster, BC
Yay! Another place that I probably would have looked askance at, if at all, if it weren't for my fellow Yelpers.
Service is fast, sushi is big, parking lot is miniscule, and wait time... depends. The nigiri sushi we ordered in particular were so big that the rule about eating sushi in one bite had to go out the window - if we didn't want to choke. I had to buy the husband a shake for dessert at the McDonald's where we covertly parked when I lost the bet that he couldn't eat a very large (and really tasty) Spicy Tuna Tempura Roll all in one bite.
It was kind of like the Anton's of sushi, seeing as how most leaving the restaurant had takeout containers. Actually, I think I might get takeout here from now on, since eating those big rolls in public can get messy, and also, a day's worth of refrigeration helps you to eat the sushi with two sensible bites, against all the rules of sushi etiquette, but who cares when you get so much for your money?Listed in: Date Night, Irraishaimase!, Everyone loves a lineup

Coquitlam, BC
Sushi California is awesome! The service is SUPER fast, to accommodate the huge demand at dinner time. There is usually a wait time for dinner, especially on the weekend.
Their portion sizes are pretty giant and their sushi is very fresh! Their tempura is also delicious. And their spicy agedashi tofu is pretty spectacular too.
If you don't want to wait in line, they do take out over the phone. The restaurant itself is fairly small, so large parties are harder to accommodate... -

I have been to Sushi california over 30 times. I love it. I used to live 2 blocks away from it and i just strolled in one day with my bf on our permanent quest for good food.
The have a great selection of rolls that aren't all shellfish ( for those like me who are allergic but still love sushi) and great agedashi tofu. The rolls are immense and everything tastes delish.
The service can be slow sometimes because the place is pretty small, but be patient because it's worth it. If not just do take out and the wait will be
much shorter.
Once you are done with your meal, you can go next door to the chinese restaurant and get bubble tea! -

What the what what???
I came here after a day of softball because I was hungry and wanted protein. I figured the rave reviews wouldn't steer me the wrong way.
I have never seen a sushi place with so many chefs working behind the bar (6) and so many servers running around in such a tiny little place. The flurry of to-go orders was incredible. While I was at the bar I watched pile after pile of white take out containers get filled with sushi then out the door.
But seriously people, the sushi is terrible.
I had the double spicy tuna roll, two pieces of hamachi nigiri, two pieces of tobiko nigiri with quail egg, and a bowl of miso. The roll was made with what was, maybe once long ago, tuna meat but was basically just spicy mush. The hamachi pieces were HUGE, but really poorly cut. The tough sinewy bits were still there and made it difficult to choke down. The tobiko was the best of the bunch, but it was falling apart. I watched the chefs as they worked and this place is all about speed, not quality. The miso was pretty good though.
The staff pretty much ignored me even though I was right at the bar next to where they were constantly packing the to-go orders. I had to flag them down to place my order and to get the bill.
The only reason to come here is the price: my total bill, including tax, was $12. The hamachi nigiri was the most expensive nirigi on the menu at $2 a piece. That's why it gets 2 stars instead of one. If you can handle sub-standard sushi and don't want to overpay for it, come here. -
Review from Claudia L.
Burnaby, BC
A bustling discount sushi joint with a simple and well-executed menu. I have never seen so many sushi chefs behind one 8-foot counter before - if you're looking for good sushi around the Lougheed Mall area, you've found it!
I used to think this site was cursed because I've seen over 3 businesses fail in the past 6 years here.
Food: But Sushi California broke the black spell by offering a simple and traditional sushi menu with some unique items (like Tuna Gomae: gomae with chunks of tuna) in a cozy atmosphere with just the right amount of decor to lift it up.
Service: It's so fast, you might get offended. During lunch rush, there were 4 small parties ahead of us and we only waited 10 minutes. The girls who work here must be on one of the E's (espresso, ecstasy or an electrical-grid) because you have about a 1 minute window to decide what you want to order before they come ask you 3 times "are you ready to order yet"? Nonetheless, I'm glad they try to minimize wait time (plus, it was pretty entertaining to see them running around like chickens with their heads cut off).
Tip: Parking spots are limited because it's in a tiny plaza so park at the McDonald's next door.Listed in: SFU Burnaby Student Eats, Sushi in Burnaby-ish. Best…

Review from Rob W.
Toronto, ON
I've walked past this place for the last month on the way to buying groceries and never took a second look. It's totally unremarkable on the outside, in an ugly strip mall with a greasy pizza place. But when I opened the door to check it out tonight ... it was PACKED! This place is an incredible hidden gem of a restaurant that I would never expect to find at Lougheed.
It's small, and a squad of megawatt-powered wait-staff hustle food relentlessly to an improbable number of tables and booths. I was lucky to get the last seat at the bar, in front of the 6th of 6 sushi chefs, all of whom were chopping, measuring and serving without pause for the entire time I was there, only stopping to turn back to butcher another massive salmon resting on the back counter. Although the decoration is actually very elegant, with touches like a row of wooden planks with the names of the sushi over the bar, the business of it makes the atmosphere charged. Every part of the service is fast, like others said, and if you took it the wrong way you could easily feel rushed.
I was hungry though, so this wasn't a problem. The biggest surprise was how cheap and fantastic the sushi was. Sushi California's menu goes toe-to-toe with the best of cheap sushi places in Vancouver (I don't think Samurai is cheaper) - most nigiri are $1, and most of the rolls are under $5. I got some nigiri and a spicy tuna sashimi ($7.50) i, spent about $12, and was completely sated. All of the fish was fresh, well-cut and presented, and generous portions, really delightful. I also can't rave enough about the sauce for the spicy tuna. It's some thick concoction that is perfect amounts sweet, tangy and spicy, and the effect of it slathered over the mound of tuna and cucumber is incredibly satisfying. It's addictive, and the portion is filling enough to be its own meal.
If you can't tell, I'm a big fan. They really seem to bust their balls here and it pays off. -
Review from Simon K.
One of the best deals for sushi in the North Road, Lougheed Hwy area. You want big cheap rolls, here's where you come. The lunches here are usually packed with people, from young and old, and they have a pretty good selection on the menu.
Do not be surprised if you order one of there combo specials, and you do not finish it, and probably end up taking it home packed. The value here is in the size, and the quality, as the rolls do not fall apart. You will be presently surprised at the service from the waitresses here, as they zip around taking your order and serving your food.
The have most of the normal stuff on the menu, but they do stray off with stuff like 'smoked salmon cream chesse roll', and 'scallop asparagus tempura roll'. -
Review from Jenni B.
Sushi California is in such a convenient location... in what may be the area's busiest parking lot.
After reading enough reviews and having a few friends tell me I simply HAD to try it, I resolved one night when I adamantly did not want to cook and was busy making a birthday cake to send my boyfriend for a take away. So my experience to date is solely takeaway.
They did have the sushi ready to go super fast. I ordered up my usual seafoodless and now wheat free rolls (yam tempura roll, how I miss ye), and I have to say they were good. Not the greatest, however the portions were larger than average and the prices below average. The real bonus to me was my boyfriend (sometimes referred to as the human garborator) was able to order a vast amount of sushami and rolls which were served in large quantities. Anytime both me and him can eat out or takeaway for around $20 earns an extra star.
For quantity, price, and edibility this place will be added to the top of my "I am too lazy to cook can't we order a takeaway?" list.Listed in: I am too lazy to cook, can't…

Pretty sub par sushi. Everything tasted the same and the sushi was so hard to eat because it was so big and falling apart once you even got it. The udon noodle was pretty good and there was one roll the smoked salmon with fried garlic that stood out pretty well.
Friendly waitstaff and fast service. But sushi for me was just ok. -
Review from Peter B.
Have I passed through Coquitlam without taking a cache of superb cheap sushi along with me? Yes. Was that one time an error? Again, yes. Will it happen again? So far, it appears that I've learned from my mistakes. This, generally speaking, is an unusual event for me. A box lined with rows of plump, fresh toro nigiri at $1.35 a pop does wonders for behavioral conditioning, I guess.

I LOVE HERE !
I went this restaurant over 30 times too.
The sushi is great, they give such big pieces of sashimi.
In the past, they had only two or three sushi men so I had to wait for the food like 20 minutes or more. However, there are four to five sushi men up there now. So I can eat sushi less than in 15 minutes.
Also the sushi is cheap when i compare the price with other restaurants. I could enjoy the sushi without thinking of the price is expensive.
The REASON of why i give only four out of five rating.........
One day I saw six to seven sushi men were out to smoke.
I am not blaming the fact that they smoke.
Just doent feel like smoking while they were working was not right. :( -

I agree with everything Claudia L and virtually all of the reviewers comments here. Massive servings. Super-fresh. Lightening fast service. They've occassionally messed up my order - probably from being just 'too efficient', but I still conclude that they're the best sushi take-out in the area, and often better than the majority I've tasted in Vancouver down-town and Kits area.
It's tremendously unlikely I could take my two boys there, as the energy is so high, they'll probably melt-down from sensory overload.
Go!! Especially now, as they seem to be refurbishing the restaurant... which I can't wait to see :) -

Hesitant to review this place because I think it's a hidden gem! Sashimi is HUGE portions and economical. Some interesting custom rolls - love the Smoked Salmon Cream Cheese Roll. The place is crazy busy at lunch or dinner and service is minimal. The poor waitresses are running around with their heads cut off....just too busy for them to handle it all. I always get take-out now - a very popular choice, as eating in during peak periods is just too painful. I do takeout because the food is SO damn good!

Ranks up there. Not THE best sushi out there (I go to Fuji Sushi up the road for that) but still one of the better ones. Get there during non typical rush times or else be prepared to wait. Also, the parking lot is tiny and tight so you might have to find street parking ( might be better anyways if don't want to chance your car being scratched up).

Reading through yelp in the middle of the night, hungry and salivating over yummy pictures.. I realized I never reviewed this place! How could that be so?! I used to live very close to this place so I ate here dozens of times. Granted it wont be the greatest sushi you will ever have in your life but something about it keeps calling you back. The rolls are ginormous, maybe a little too big if you ask me, because sometimes you have to eat it in two bites and then what inevitably happens? Everything falls apart, boohoo! Well the thing that made me fall in love with this place is their shrimp tempura. It's sooo light and fresh and delicious.. I could probably eat these every day. The service is fast and friendly but the atmosphere is pretty loud. Wouldn't recommend taking a date for a romantic dinner here.
