Ah, I have such a love-hate relationship with Super Valu. It seems almost everyone who lives on the Drive has a similarly tumultuous relationship.
I love it because:
-it's the only place nearby where I can pick up some veggies, eggs, and bread at 2am
-their sale items are actually shockingly well-priced (I saw 2l containers of Breyer's for $3.99 the other day)
-it's a one-stop shop; they have almost EVERYthing
-despite being a chain, they actually stock a lot of locally produced items
I hate it because:
-it tends to be a more expensive for non-sale items, with some prices being absolute extortion (Sorry, friends. I don't CARE how bad I smell; I'm not spending $7+ on deodorant)
-their deli is ridiculously small (thankfully this isn't a problem given the plethora of excellent delis in the area)
-the overall "feel" of the place is depressing
With this all being said, I'm still glad to have Super Valu in the 'hood. When I'm too lazy to a) walk the extra 6 blocks to Donald's, or b) spend tons of time stopping into multiple stores to get what I need, Super Valu is my go-to. Alas, it's the price of convenience.Listed in: Commercial Drive Hot Spots

We stopped here mistakenly thinking it was an Italian grocery store! Couldn't see the name when we walked in.
They have lots of stuff, but holy crap is it ever expensive. I'm talking charging more than Whole Foods for lots of things. I paid $6.99 for miso here!
I have no idea why they call it "Valu" there is absolutely none, the prices are way jacked up on everything for a bargain chain store. You're basically paying because it's open 24/7 and they organize the shelves nicely.
I won't come here again because I'd rather shop at Whole Foods for these prices and the "feel good" atmosphere. -

Your in need of some food relief in the middle of the night, like after midnight to the wee morning of 8 AM, can't figure what else is open and really need to burn a hole in your pocket cause nobody else will take you hard earned money and want to spend on overpriced groceries? Well then you have come to the right place my friends!
It is always an interesting time coming here in the crazy hours of the night to actually see what ghouls and ghosts of people shop during these times. Usually when you come here during those hours your probably walking alone, and there are more people working in here than customers. What is the best way to say things in terms of price, if you are used to shopping at the high end markets (Whole Foods, Urban Fare) then you will be used to the cost, but not used to the quality, think of it as a high end - low end type of thing.
One thing I was surprised is that they do not have a pharmacy/health care section. I walked around a good 3 times to find it, and nope, not in sight. So if you are doing evils in the middle of the night, and because of some mishap you get injured, feeling in pain, need drugs, need bandages, need smokes, need to buy love gloves, there are none here. This is strictly a grocery store! -

Best market in town....... at 3 AM lol.
Have you ever started baking in the middle of the night and realized that you don't have enough coco powder/vanilla extract/flour/etc. to make your monsterous concoction? Well, if you're in the area, this is the place to pick up your needs...... at a premium price though.
Ok, what are you expecting? This place is 24 hours so pricey are going to be a little more expensive to pay the overhead and what not. Super Valu isn't like a super Walmart chain and can afford to keep lower prices.
There's underground parking, but even I don't park there late at night.....
It's a good market (-minus the price difference). -

Supervalu has recently started putting meat in small plastic bags before putting it in with your groceries. Win!
Except they now charge 10 cents for each plastic grocery bag. Oh come on! 10 cents for a store that rivals Safeway in prices. And no club card for discounts or air miles.
Again, shop here only when everywhere else is closed. Us night owls always have to pay :-(1 Previous Review: Show all »

Normally, a neighbourhood grocery store might not be worth a mention, but the Commercial Drive Super Valu has recently stepped it up in my book.
While they have always had a decent selection of the basics, I never shopped their much unless it was to pick up something i could find at one of the numerous veggie markets on the Drive (ie: sandwich bags and Windex). But recently I discovered a small section of the store that has me quite excited. Super Valu is now carrying a line of organic processed meats. While its not hard to find an organic chicken breast, it has been a bit more difficult to get my hands on organic pepperonis or sausages. The Organic World Food Network brand seems to have all of this and a bit more. The super Valu carries organic Angus beef and organic bison pepperoni as well as a chicken version and a turkey version. they also have organic chicken smokies and organic turkey sausage. Yum! I've tried all of the varieties except the sausage and I've been pleased with them all - especially the bison pepperoni. And just in time for camping season!
If you're in the area, and looking for a meaty treat, stop by the Super Valu and have a look in the front refrigerator case to the right of the checkout lines (when facing into the store).Listed in: Why drive to Commercial Drive?

There is little value at Super Valu. Very pricey for almost all of the products and there are rarely any sales. I wouldn't shop here unless you live near here and you're too lazy to drive, walk, carpool, or take public transit to a supermarket with lower prices.
