    The Good:

+ It's about $30 less per night per night than the Holiday Inn (depending on the season).
+ The furniture and fittings are newer and in better shape than either Budget Lodge or the Edgewood.
+ The complimentary continental breakfast had a lot more variety than most of this sort of hotel that I've been to: danish pastries and muffins (of course), a selection of cold cereals (not quite as common, but not unusual), bread and bagels to toast (complete with cream cheese, which puts it a cut above right there), and even hard boiled eggs (which I have never seen in this kind of breakfast layout before).
+ It doesn't have a pool. (Okay, granted, having a pool is kind of nice, but both times that I have stayed at the Holiday Inn, it's been filled with screaming kids having pool parties, including the night that was supposed to be a nice, romantic, engagement dinner, so I finally decided to go for the place that *doesn't* have a pool, and spent the night in blissful quiet.)
+ The chambermaid took the hint and left the bedcover that I had removed from the bed off, and also left the pillow that I had grabbed off the other bed on my bed, when she made the room up. (Granted, that's a small thing, and rearranging things the way I wanted them wouldn't have taken long, but I appreciated the thoughtful touch.)

    The So-So:

~ Route 6 actually curves around the hotel, and traffic noise does come in through the windows. That doesn't bother me, since I grew up on Granville Street, but it would probably bother some people. If you need quiet, ask for a room in the Northeast corner of the building (odd-numbered rooms from #11 to #21).
~ It's harder to get to than it looks. You might think that you can cut through the Holiday Inn's parking lot, but you can't. (Well, maybe if you have a 4x4...) You might think that you can't get to it by going down Allegheny Avenue, but you can. (Or, if your'e coming along Pennsylvania Avenue, keep going two blocks past Ludlow, and then hang a left onto Struthers.)
~ The soap was, for a nice change, not perfumey, but, for some odd reason, when I washed with it, I ended up smelling like motor oil. It's nice not to end up smelling like lavender or hibiscus or whatever, but stepping out of the shower smelling like I just changed the oil in my car is a little weird.

    The Bad:

    - For some reason, there was a Pepsi bottle on the floor beside the easy chair. I hate to be picky, but such an obvious piece of litter right out in the open has to make me ask how often, and how thoroughly, the floor gets vacuumed.
    - The first morning I was there, neither the orange juice nor the apple juice side of the juice machine was working. The coffee was made, which would have satisfied the bean fiends, but I'm of the Anita Bryant school of thought: "Breakfast without orange juice is like a day without sunshine."

So, I'm going to have to take off a half-point for each, although if Yelp let me, I'd make it a point and a half, leaving the Super 8 with a half-point advantage over the Holiday Inn, rather than a full point.

Blech. We usually stay at the Holiday Inn but, since the we didn't have the kid with us and a pool wasn't so important, we decided to save a few buck and try the Super 8 (which, coincidentally, is just behind the Holiday Inn).

The first "non smoking" room they gave to us smelled so strongly of cigarettes you would have thought we just walked into a bar. Back to the lobby. Second room didn't smell like smoke, but reeked of men's cologne which made us wonder if a) it hadn't actually been cleaned or if b) they had hourly rates during daytime hours.

We were just sleeping there so we decided to just deal with it.  The bed was uncomfortable, the cleanliness level was questionable, and the furnishing were dated and well worn.

The "free breakfast" was cold cereal and bread products (bread, bagels, danishes). Uck! We both tried a small danish (nasty) and had a cup of coffee (the coffee was the best part of the stay).  At $80+ bucks after taxes and other stuff we would have been better spending another $40 at the Holiday Inn, having a spotless room and a phenomenal breakfast.

Apparently, there's a new hotel in North Warren (a Hampton Inn maybe?) . . . comparable to the Holiday Inn. Stay at the Holiday Inn or at the new place. Skip this one and the Red "Whatever" in North Warren.
