Review from Elizabeth R.
Not a bad spot for a quick lunch, or breakfast. We sat outside on the patio during a lunch break this week. It was beautiful weather, so the patio was pretty busy, but the inside was dead.
The service was on the slow side, but at least the server was perfectly nice.
The food (greek chicken salad) was ok, but there was way too much going on with the chicken seasoning, so much going on, in fact, that it was overpowering, and I actually tried to cut the outside of the chicken strips off, so I could spare my taste buds the assault. It wasn't easy or successful, so I just had the salad. The rest of the salad was good, and it was obvious the ingredients were fresh which is always nice.
The checks came out wrong, and then there was a debate about whether or not they could be separated. I find it hard to believe that separating checks is an uncommon request, but in the end they were separated and we paid and went on our merry way.
Good spot for a quick bite, but I'd probably walk another block or two before I went back here. -

Just love this place. The interior is a little too IKEA like but the service is fast and friendly. The food is fresh and the prices are affordable.

This is my 5th, and least favourite Sunset Grill.
It was bright and clean, but a bit cafeteria-like. That vibe, plus a few other negatives (below) reduced the rating from a 3-star = average rating.
As this breakfast was on January 2 (holiday for most), we had a bit bigger turnout than usual (6) for our weekly breakfast, so I have a larger sample on which to judge.
The following negatives, though small details on the surface, combined to result in a deduction of 1 star from the average;
-2 of our party had poached eggs, and both found them overcooked. (They weren't asked how they would like them, but both of these experienced poached egg eaters agreed that "runny yolk" is the default method.)
-The waiter refused to give us separate cheques, as it was "their policy" with 6 guests and up. (We only wanted 3 cheques.)
-Default straws in glasses of water. This is a major pet peeve of mine. Imagine how many plastic straws are wasted in a year by providing this "extra". VERY few restaurants include this unnecessary item in water.
-The home fries were substandard. I have found the home fries a highlight at other Sunset Grills, especially the original on Queen St. E.* These were overcooked, crumbly and tasteless.
The rest of our meals were satisfactory, the coffee flowed freely, and the waiter was pleasant.
*My understanding is that the original at 2006 Queen St. E., and one other (at 1602 Danforth, I believe) are owned by the original owner. The owner sold the name and logo, and all the others are operated by other entities.Listed in: Breakfast places, Diners, Greasy Spoons and…

Sunset Grill is my go-to breakfast place near work. I regularly come here with co-workers for a quick meal. They have pretty average run of the mill food but their service is impeccably fast. Although the food isn't amazing, it's nice to have a breakfast that isn't completely soaked in grease. Prices are more than reasonable as well.

I like the novelty to eating all-day breakfast on a weekday afternoon if only to fool myself into thinking it's weekend brunch and I don't have to go back to work after all. *sigh*
Met a friend for lunch and ordered 2 breakfasts with bacon, toast, 3 over easy eggs and hashbrowns ($6.99 each). Food came to the table amazingly quick.
Breakfast was good, nothing outstanding but then again, it's pretty hard to screw up eggs.
Service was friendly. We were in and out in less than 30 minutes which is great for a quick lunch.
The only downside - Having to spend the rest of the afternoon in back to back meetings at work.Listed in: Downtown Lunching

Sunset Grill is my good ol' reliable brunch place.
If I'm having brunch in the Bloor/Church area, I alternate beween Sunset Grill and Lola's Commissary. It depends on who I'm eating with.
I found that Sunset was an easier place to eat for people with allergies.
One of my friends has a gluten allergy and another friend is allergic to sesame seeds. It's surprising how many places use seasame crusted bread to make french toast (Sunset doesn't)!
I always order the same thing here, the Sunset Super..
And it sure is super delicious and filling!
It's a real breakfast.
Sausage and/or bacon (I do both), 2 pancakes, 3 eggs, and of course home fries!
My cup of coffee always seems bottomless!
I've never had an issue with service here.
This place may not be trendy, but for casual diner style brunch, this place has never let me down! -

Had brunch there twice. The first time I went, I got myself some breakfast with pancake. My breakfast (which included eggs and sausages etc) came quickly but then I had to wait another 20 mins for my pancakes to come. Ok fine, it finally came and it was stale!! I asked for some maple syrup but the server told me they don't offer it! what type of place serves pancakes without maple syrup???
After a while, i decided to go give it another try...I thought i'll be fine if I just avoid the pancakes. BUT i was wrong! this time my eggs were done wrong ( I asked for over-easy but it came out well-over done). Also, this time i sat in their patio caz it was really nice out that day. Some creepy hobo stood beside me and stared at my food for 5 mins! I think the problem is caz their patio is right on the busy Bloor street without any fencing!...it made me feel like I was eating on the streets...
There's plenty of better places that serves brunch and have a nicer patio near by. -

Having gone to a few Sunset Grills, I can say I have had some delicious greasy spoon brunches in the past. Maybe it wasn't the best meal I ever had but it has hit the spot and when the bill came, I would think to myself 'I will be back.'
For example, that is how I feel about the Sunset Grill on Queen St. East near the beaches and how I feel about a few other locations. Just not this one.
I have been there twice now. Once with a large group (12) and the other with a smaller (4) one. The first time was just a few weeks after they opened and it was horrible. I specifically made reservations knowing I was bringing a large group and I was there by 10:50am for my 11:00 reservation to make sure the table was free and to advise that we would be there shortly since we wanted to sit together.
So, by 11:25am we are still waiting at the door. Why? Never was given an explanation except "Sorry" and a promise that once "the group at the back left you could have their table." Which whom had just been served maybe about 5 min. before we got there, so they were not going to finish anytime soon.
Since there was nothing open near Yonge and Bloor that resembled this greasy spoon joint, we had no choice but to stay. After waiting so long, I had to take charge and literally commandeer two tables squeezed just left off the entrance because even though they had offered them, I do not think they thought we would take it as they were not enough. Yes, they in fact had originally suggested my group be split and sit us all over the restaurant instead. What?!
However when I had to get two/three chairs from a nearby empty smaller table and the back, one of the servers actually got upset. Seriously? After making us wait for 25 min.?!
Now to the food: 'cookie cutter,' would be about the best way to describe my eggs. Yes, I know Sunset Grill is a chain and they have a way for making each dish. But seriously my eggs and melted cheese (which resembled melted yellow plastic) looked as if they have just been manufactured out of a heating machine in Bangladesh*. (*No offence intended to the great people of Bangladesh).
What's more, there weren't even warm. And the service was unorganized and slow, although I will be forgiving on the 'slow' as they were busy.
The second time, the locale was picked by a good friend so I just joined after they had sat down. The food was 'okay' at best. However to me, the egg dish didn't look so much greasy spoon as it did cafeteria stale. The eggs benny looked boring and were 'meh.' Which by the way, is the metric I rate brunch places. If they serve bad eggs benny and they call themselves a brunch place, then that locale is dead to me. Seriously, how could you mess that up? You can still make a tasty eggs benny simile under $10. (Look at Sneaky Dee's for example).
Anyway --maybe they will get their #$% together, but for the time being, I avoid this place and hope something better opens in that locale if it goes out of business. The only reason I would go there is out of desperation, not desire.Listed in: My Reviews

Review from Chris P.
I gave this new all-day breakfast place by my house a try this morning. The setup is nice. Everything has been completely renovated from the cafe that occupied the spot before. They have a healthy sized menu of your typical breakfast fair from the basic three egg meal, steak and eggs, omelettes, and waffles. They also have a small lunch menu with grilled cheese, burgers, and salads.
I would rate the food at a solid three stars. There's nothing on the menu that makes it any better than the next breakfast place down the street. What made the difference here was the staff and the speed of service. I was greeted at the door, shown promptly where I could place my take-out order, and was gone in under 5 minutes.
The gentleman I was speaking with, who I'm guessing was the franchisee, was very friendly and chatty with me while I was waiting. He was saying that they will have a patio in the summer which they hope to have up and running in April.Listed in: Egg-celent Breakfast
