If for some reason you end up in Elmhurst, New York, do yourself a favor and stop by this Chinese Bakery. It's such a charm. I will affectionately call, it "Teem Mut Mut"-Cantonese name of the asian bakery. We actually passed by this place every morning as we headed towards the subway to Manhattan. Buns and pastries for no more than a dollar and hot/cold drink started off our day. Reminds me of the Sheng Kee bakery back in the Bay Area, but more reasonable.

I tried their raisin bun, salty bun, corn& ham bun, hong kong milk tea, and coffee/tea boba. All were excellent!

If you live in Astoria there is no demographics for a Chinese bakery. I mean there will be your casual customers, handful of occasional daily locals and the epicurious wanting to try a different baked treat other than the American or Latin style bakeries and donuts shop. Hey that's me, sometimes I want to be able to get a egg custard, a roast pork bun, something baked with red bean or sesame in it. Sometimes I don't want to travel from Astoria to Flushing or Manhattan's Chinatown. What's my best option? Twenty minutes away from Sunnyside, which borders Astoria, is Elmhurst. This little spot on Queens Boulevard and a few streets near the Grand Avenue intersection, a street down is the -R- train Grand Ave - Newtown subway station. I look at the street and it say Van Loon Street. There is a Fay Da two streets down on Grand Street and Broadway that does the egg custards just a little bit better and has better coffee and a wider selection. But here's the plus side of Sunrise Bakery... it's cleaner, less trafficked, quaint, a better hue of an atmosphere due to the low lighting but sun brightened room and it's calmer to do some reading while having a treat. With their huge windows there's a pleasant view of a quiet street on Queens Blvd. If I lived locally, yes, I'd be in everyday for breakfast.

It's a small shop; the square footage the size of small to mid sized bedroom. It only has seating room for a few seats in the front like a bar type seating facing the window and about 3-4 tables. Cake, cookies, buns, bread and I think I saw a metal pantry to keep food warm but it was empty, maybe for goodies for the morning, for I was there at 4:40pm. All I got were two boxes of cookies and egg custards. Four stars in it's category for being quaint, local, clean and an addition to a need besides mainstream.

Two notes: After 6:30pm 2 for $1.00 buns and you can get bus tickets for $10.00 to Foxwoods Casino here. No bathroom, it showed for "For Staff Only".

If someone knows of a place around Astoria or Sunnyside that sells egg custards or buns, please let me know!

HUBBA BUBBA....BUBBLE TEA! love their flavored bubble teas and their fresh baked breads, rolls and steamed buns. I normally visit Sunrise for their taro tea which is refreshing and delightful. This time around I had their papaya taro tea....ahhhh YEAHHHH......I was giddy. The papaya added a kick to the tea and the tapioca was delicious!!!! It was perfectly sweetened. Try it with some of their fresh baked sweet bread or a steamed bun.

This is a small shop on Queens Boulevard. Very limited seating. Parking is tight around here.

Such a treat for both locals and tourists alike. They have such savory baked good items. Anything from sweet goods, freshly made sandwiches, decandent cakes. I love all their different buns! This is my anytime snack stop in New York. I haven't found any bakery in California any better. I've become a fan of Chinese bakeries because of this place. Female workers here are a bit standoffish, but the guy here (manager or owner, I think) is really nice. Prices are easier for the wallet personally so I'll always want to be back for more.

The sandwiches are pretty tasty. They are noticeably less fresh in the afternoon than in the morning, however. Their sweets are good, too, from rolls to iced coffees. Workers are pretty nice.

This is a wonderful, typical chinese bakery but in a great location right on Queens Blvd. I used to stop by here every Sunday for breakfast roast pork bun  or steamed bun (bao) before church at New Life. They used to have a great fried salty dumpling, sadly they no longer serve it. I guess its better for my waistline, but they were so good!

When you are in the mood for some roast pork buns and near Queens Place (the mall near Queens Center), the Sunrise Bakery & Cafe is only a hop, skip & a jump away.

Whether in the morning or an afternoon lunch/snack, there are fair number of assorted pastries, not to mention the cakes & bubble tea they also serve there.

The go to for me is usually the roast pork bun, but I occasionally go for their chicken pot pie when it is available.  Aside from the baked pastries, they have a few which are steamed and some which are fried.  They range from the meat-filled, sweet red bean, custard or coconut (which is delicious) and they have sandwiches from ham & egg for the morning crowd to fried chicken filets for a more afternoon crowd, although I have seen them in the morning.

Overall this is a great place to get a quick bite to eat (most pastries are under $1 or 2) and the service is friendly and prompt.

Their bubble teas are a tradition on summer weekends. The steamed buns are light, doughy and flavorful. The sweet breads, sandwiches and salty/flavorful baked goods are consistently good. Friendly service, clean cafe and large windows to look out of.

Fast, Friendly, Great Prices, Great Food! This is how I describe Sunrise Bakery and Cafe. My family and I had the pleasure of eating there many times during our FEB07 vacation in New York City! It was literally within walking distance from our hotel in Queens. In fact, we would pass it en route to the subway station. Almost daily we've eaten there for breakfast or to buy food for on the go!

Chinese-owned, Sunrise does offer some Dim Sum items like Steamed Pork Buns (my personal favorite) and a variety of asian style pastries and desserts. Of course, there are other goods available like breads, ready-to-go sandwiches, cookies, cakes, etc. Let's not forget they also have coffee and its variations (espresso, latte, etc), teas and a choice selection of refrigerated beverages. So, there is something for everyone here!

In spite of the coziness of Sunrise's locale (I've seen bigger Starbuck's stores), the friendly and efficient staff there can certainly cater to the crowds they service throughout the day. There is always someone behind the counter and in front of the Dim Sum and pastry display cases. So, whether you decide to eat there or just want to hurry and buy whatever to go, the staff at Sunrise are that fast and that friendly. It always seemed like my family and I were served immediately every time we came there.

Expecting to be spending alot for our NYC trip, we were shocked at the surprising affordability of eating at Sunrise Bakery and Cafe. Due to the variety of items available there, I won't go into individual pricing. However, I'll put it this way. On average, I've fed my wife, my 2 year old son, and myself... with drinks and all, for about $6.50 each visit.... seriously! Shocked?!? Pleasantly surprised? You will be when you give Sunrise Bakery and Cafe a try. I'm certain you'll like it!

    What 9 reviews?! ONLY?!?!

I am absolutely astound! This place is almost as good as Tai pan! This place has yummmy pineapple coconut. The drinks however, were very powdery and diluted ( I expect better) But this place was located near our hotel AND the subway stop. We stopped here almost every morning to pick up some breakfast before heading to the city!

My sister love the bao zi and my mommmy loves the pork sung breads! I absolutely would come to this bakery again:) Too bad this place close at 6:30pm :( no midnight snacks for me:(

This place is yummy and has good marble cakes.  It's not crowded or busy like the Taipan Bakery chain.  You can get some good pork buns, have some bubble tea and get on with your day.

+ Their meat floss buns are all kinds of awesome.

We used to live in this neighborhood and this bakery opened toward the last year of our residency. It is conveniently situated on a corner of Queens Blvd and a busy side street (Van Loon), which has a traffic light. And that's exactly how we discovered the little shop! They brilliantly put up big glass windows on that side of the street so that commuters like us could take a peek at their colorful pastries while waiting for the turn of the light. Indeed, having this visual early on in the morning made us swear to stop by on the way back home.  If you have a vehicle, it may be tricky to get here, especially if you are unfamiliar with the area. In my experience, parking was not really a problem as there are several parking meters within that block, and the bakery's neighbors seemed always closed. (Unless things have changed now and there's competition). The Grand Avenue subway station is nearby so you can't have an excuse that it's inaccessible.

The owner does a good job in keeping the place very presentable and clean. I used to go get my Asian pastries in one or two of the long-time establishments along Broadway, near the hospital. But when this place opened,I frequented this place more because, as I've said, they seem to take importance in cleanliness, friendliness and presentation. I haven't been to this cafe in a while and I wonder if everything I remember about it is the same.  But, I do miss their pork buns and all their other unusual and not so unusual pastries!

This is a cute bakery I've been to a couple of times.  They have really good coffee, ying-yang milk tea, and bakery items.  If you go in past 6:30 you also get items 2-for-1.  They get docked 1/2 star because everytime I've gone, the cashiers have seemed moody or not as friendly and another 1/2 because their door has a bad draft.  Decent seating, decent staff service.

Chanced upon this little gem while lost in NY, and it was great because we got the 2-for-1 deal! They were nearing closing time so service wasn't superb, but it was decent. There was still a good selection of bakery goods left - not exactly sure what that means, but the bread was good despite eating it hours later. Good prices, and it's a cute little place.
