Its easy to overlook the forgetfulness of the servers. They actually smile and chat with you even if it's your first time there. GASP! Two stars right there and I just sat down.
Lunch special:
Soup - veggie (what they call Borscht) or a Chinese kind with melon. I opted for the veggie. It was actually kind of nice. Brothy and tart. Which is what I like. I've had others that are kind of...ew. I won't even go there. All I can say is that if someone at my table got it and didn't want it, I will take it.
Baked Double Chop on Rice* (chicken thigh and pork chop)- the chops are actually already cut into strips for you so you still get that thick luscious tomato-y goodness on your rice. Not all over your plate. Or lap. You will find fresh tomato, onion, and mushroom just underneath said chops. The rice underneath all that is still fried rice but there are no carrots, peas, etc in it (like at The Boss). Just good ol' scrambled egg. I don't lament that, though. I never liked the greasy fried stuff anyhow. The crust on the pork stayed crunchy even after 15 minutes in the sauce! Thumbs up from me. Now, I know I dint look it, but I eat a lot. A LOT. And often. I out eat my man, who can put away a Lumberjack Breakfast Platter at Denny's (which means yes, so can I). This plate of double chop, tomato, and rice bested me. It kicked my ass there and back again.
*there's no actual English name for this dish. It's on the menu board that changes every so often. Please don't make me directly translate it...(Lovebird Chop on Rice. See! It sounds ridiculous!!)
Cold drinks are $0.50 more. Argh!! (WHY?!?!) I don't know about the sweetness factor, as pointed out by Johnson C, since I always order my drinks without sugar. But I'll take his word for it, people. He knows his stuff.
Okay, so the tally at the end was nothing compared to the amount of food that appeared in front of me. $9.50 with the dreaded HST.
There are dozens of other choices to be had on their lunch menus that don't include the soup, but will still be accompanied by a drink (and yes, the extra $0.50 too) for $5.95.
Guess which HK cafe I'll be hitting up all the time now?? -

First time coming here for lunch and it was *packed*. It's seriously 'cheep-cheep' so it's I guess it's no surprise for the area. We were seated by the door and everyone waiting for a table decided to stand around our table. Bacdafucup.
We ordered salted fish & diced chicken fried rice and some Malay-style dry-fried beef flat noodles. I can immediately tell something wasn't right just by looking at the dishes. The rice was mushy and noodles had no flavour even though the waitresses warned it was spicy - it was bland.
The fuck, man? We didn't finish it because the dishes weren't very tasty. Out of force of habit, I packed up the rice and left the noodles. It's still sitting in my car... I think I going to toss it. I don't remember that last time I did something like this. I feel horrible about wasting food - but holy hell, it was difficult to eat.
Definitely a 2-star meal... but I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt, chalk it up to an off day and just drop it to a 3-star. It's cheap - but is Sun Yee ever a dice roll.Listed in: East Van Eateries, HK Cafes

Right near my house... a friend and I went just because there's so many places like this along this part of hastings and our mission is to try them all.
Standard HK cafe... pretty much a diner. We had beef chow fun and a giant eel and egg on rice. Crazy cheap. I couldn't believe how large the pieces of eel were.
They've also got a full page on the menu of "western delights", where you can order pork chops, casserole (weird but kinda awesome), hot dogs, etc.
I'll be back to try more stuff. -

This place use to be called hollywood for those who recognize the location. The food here is pretty good and the value is great. The downside is the service. There really isn't much service. Tonight we had dinner with my family of 5 and the bill came out to 36 bucks before tip. That's for 4 dishes, soup, and dessert. Lots of options as well if you don't feel like chinese food. Like other cafes they have western alternatives like steak, chicken steak, spaghetti, etc. YAY! I'M A FAN.
