just another day in the park, nothing special; maybe i've been here too much.

At least it's clean and lots of workers to flag down someone.

Probably the standout from dimsum yesterday was the shrimp on eggplant.

But the squab was better before, special on for a week, as pic indicates.

I'm not a huge crab fan, but my bf was, key word "WAS." He had been craving the great Alaskan King crab that he dreamt about it even before we took the trip up to Canada from the US. After hearing about this place from his coworker, he HAD to try it. Along with his friend, I accompanied him to Sun Sui Wah. Determined to eat that crab, we ordered one even though it was a whopping $28 per pound. The crab we got was 7 pounds, so basically its a 200 dollar crab. The server took out the live crab and we took some pictures with it (the workers were very enthusiastic and took a bunch for us). Then they take it back to the kitchen to cook it. They steamed the legs and the rest was deep fried so that you can even eat the shell. Like all the other reviews mentioned, there was ALOT of garlic, but it didn't bother me that much.
I'm not a SUPER crab fan, but I can enjoy them. However, I do have to say, I couldn't taste the difference between this crab vs the other crabs I've had at buffets or other asian restaurants, perhaps I'm not a trained crab eater. Thus, we all agreed that the food was good, but the price was too steep. My bf was disappointed and he vowed that he will not eat crab in a long time.
Sun Sui Wah's decor reminds me of those Asian decked out, gold everywhere restaurant with tons of round tables. It actually made me feel at home since I grew up in Asia and often ate at this type of setting. The workers were extremely friendly, they have the managers who talk to you the most and are SUPERB salesmen. According to them, everything about Sun Sui Wah is the best. Then there are the servers who switch your plates every time you use it. We came at around 9pm, so we had the whole restaurant to ourselves and of course the whole crew attended to us.
Four stars due to the ridiculous price, otherwise everything else was extremely pleasant.
If you want to splurge on some Alaskan King crab, this place ain't bad.
PS. they have an underground parking lot that you can park your car, which is quite convenient.

I was a little underwhelmed with the dishes here. I've had better Chinese food elsewhere. The service however is top notch for a Chinese place, so points on that!

    3.5 star.

What I like about this place is that they have a picture menu that highlights some of the dishes. They also have English subtitles in that menu for certain dishes. Otherwise, you order off a piece of paper (dish names in Chinese) by checking the items and quantity you would like. It was crowded when we visited. We got here at around 1pm but still got seated immediately.

Their congee is super fresh and yummy. I loved it!! It was probably one of the best congees I have ever tried in Chinatowns on the West Coast.

The service was meh. At one point, we accidentally spilled some soup on the table and one waiter walked by us, saw it, did nothing, and walked away. When we finally stopped him when he came around again for some napkins, he looked irritated. Wow, really?

    Dishes 4.5 star
    Congee 5 star
    Service 1 star
Bathroom cleanness 4 star - their bathroom is perhaps cleaner that many other (Asian) restaurants

We traveled across the continent (I can say that cuz we're from NY) to try this best rated dim sum place on yelp.

    Meh!

I wouldn't say it was bad, I just wasn't that impressed. It could have something to do with getting there at 1:30 on a Saturday, maybe they saves the worst for last.

For starters, I was startled by the fact that there was no one pushing around carts, you simply mark what you want on a piece of paper (offered in both English and Chinese) and they bring it to you. Kinda takes away from the experience.  But then i realized that the dim sum places in hong kong (which has the biggest influence on Vancouver) also do not usually have carts, so maybe NY is outdated?? No, I refuse to believe that.

For a dim sum place, this place was definitely clean, bright and modern. The kind of place that's catered to non-Asians.

The other reason I think that is how pricey each plate of dim sum is, the smallest plate was $3.50, and it goes up to $7. For four people, not eating much food, bill came out to about $70. Ummm what?????

    Now on to the food...
Turnip cake - too much powder, not enough turnip. Too thick and not crispy enough.
Tripe - heard texture and sauce was different from NY and it tasted good
Clams - for 8 bucks I only found like 5 clams amongst 25 shells. Ripoff.
Dan tats - not fresh and crust wasn't crispy enough.

I feel like you can judge a dim sum place well by their turnip cake and their Dan tats alone. So with that, they failed me.

    Other notable tips/notes:
    tea is NOT free.
    parking IS free.

If I'm ever back in Vancouver again, I think I'd try another place.

Yummy! The best dim sum in Vancouver.

As usual, Sun Sui Wah is very busy on the weekends so arrive early (by 10:30am) and you'll quickly find a seat. Arrive late and be prepared to wait for them to call you by loudspeaker in their lovely spiral staircase entrance.

So far, the only place where we can find these perfect little pastries filled with whipped cream and fresh mango.

Do not order the squab. Portions are smaller than usual. Not much meat. Thought the $10.80 price tag was a loss leader but it's just smaller.

Quality of dim sum has gone down. Pan fried dumpling arrived warm at best, not hot. Even the BBQ pork bun was not steaming when arrived.

Most of all, service has gone down. Not as attentive as before, and they were not busy.

Expensive for the quality of food and service.

    Main frustration is its inconsistency.

We came here just after they re-opened for the evening crowd, as it was the only time we could make it.  I assumed we missed the true dim-sum experience because of the lack of carts wheeling their way around and the nature of the menu we received, but after seeing some of the other reviews I'm not so sure that's true now.  The evening menu was relatively standard dinner (if pricey with a focus on rarer items) fare: large family style platters of foods that you order to share at the table.

That being said, the food we ordered was delicious.  They were advertizing a King Crab in Garlic Sauce special.  Have you ever heard of 40 clove garlic chicken?  Well, Sun Sui Wah's dish is like 80 clove garlic king crab.  It's important to note, this is not garlic SAUCE, it is a WHOLE steamed king crab covered in a metric fuckton of diced garlic.  Now, I love garlic, so it was fun yummy times for me, but if your commitment to garlic is anything below "I love you, get in me now" then this will likely have you scraping off the garlic by the plateful.  (Side note: yes, I said WHOLE crab.  We got the smallest one they had at 6lbs because there were only two of us).

We also got the seafood hot & sour soup, which was excellent.  And one of the specials, enoki mushrooms with vegetables and garlic sauce.  This was an actual sauce, not just mushrooms rolled in garlic.

TLDR: not actually dim-sum in the evening, but delicious none of the less.  Only major downside: really pretty pricey.  Our three dishes (granted one was king crab by the pound) came out at over $200.

I tried Sun Sui Wah with my fiance and my parents last June when we were in Vancouver for twenty-four hours (of course, the day before a cruise).  We wanted to go out for dim sum because Vancouver's so famous for its Asian food.  We heard that the best dim sum in town is actually down in Richmond, but we didn't have a car, and someone at our hotel recommended this place.  I'm really glad they did.

Unlike dim sum places I've tried in San Francisco and Seattle, you order as much as you want a la carte from a menu, instead of from the little carts.  I don't remember exactly what we ordered, but I remember just about everything being delicious-- I was mostly a fan of the dumplings, and loved every one I had.  A noodle dish and soup were also great.  The menu had a lot of variety, so there was something to please everyone from my mom (whose favorite Chinese food is egg foo young) to my fiance (who loves authentic Asian food beyond recognition).

This was delicious dim sum a quick cab ride from the waterfront area.  If I'm ever in town again I would definitely go back.

What fancy Dim $um they have here!
The food was great, it just makes me chuckle that everything is presented so faaaancy here. Maybe that's why I'm told people from US drive to Canada to have dim $um here... oh people like me! Yup! this is one of my favorite dim sum places. I love Canada! People are nice, air is fresh and food is GREAT!

I am a picky to snobby eater, and proud of it! This place gets a five star for dim sum because of.... FRESHNESS! Dim sum consists a lot of seafood and pork. I have never ever gotten bad seafood here. You also never get that stinky pork taste in any dumpling or sui mai.

We got black bean sauce clams, har gow, sui mai, chives dumpling, stir fry mussels, and a lot more. The important ones to know, clams were not overcooked or overwhelmed by the black bean sauce. Har gow was steaming hot, the skin was thin, shrimp wasn't mashed up, perfectly seasoned and fresh. I seriously don't need to rave anymore, I'm sure anything here is delicious!

If I'm ever in WA or Canada, dim sum is always on the top of my list! Vancouver has a pretty big Chinatown loaded with great places to eat. If you're a seafood or Asian food lover come here!

Wowowow, this is some high-grade, fancy dim sum! Best I've ever had and closest to Hong Kong dim sum as it gets!

First off, this place gives you a SCANTRON for ordering. It's like you're taking a test up in there! I didn't know though (haven't been in school for too long, I guess) and placed a checkmark inside the little rectangular box. My friends had a great guffaw over that. So remember kids, fill the box in completely!

Everything we ordered (standard dim sum fare) was so heavenly. The ha gao (shrimp dumplings) and cheong fun (rice noodle) were so soft and tender that they stubbornly broke apart no matter how delicately we handled them with our chopsticks. Not the best presentation, but I'll be d*mned if it didn't taste and feel great in my mouth!

Service here is spectacular. Teapot is always filled and dirty plates are periodically whisked away and exchanged for a new one. This is the place to eat dim sum like royalty!

I am not sure if we are just spoiled or have high expectations when it comes to dim-sum. This place does not have a lot to choose from but the food was good. The resteraunt is located  on the corner of 22nd and easy to spot. We got here half an hour after opening and there were plenty of seats to choose from. This wasn't your typical cart dim sum as you have to check your food items off a list and they scan it through a machine that prompts the order to the kitchen. I heard from our driver at the hotel that this place is zee the spot to go to for dim-sum but I thought it was OK.

Ten of us came for dinner and had the "Ultimate Hearts Desire" set menu, with a slight modification - no shark fin soup and crab instead of lobster.

The meal consisted of an appetizer platter, deep fried crab claw, pan fried scallop & prawn with vegetables, soup, sauced crab legs, deep fried crispy chicken, pan fried seasonal vegetables and mushroom, steamed fresh fish, fried rice, pan fried e-Fu noodles and a duo of mango desserts.

There were several hits: the deep fried crab claw, the crispy chicken, the scallops & prawn, the steamed fish and the mango pancake. A few that I could take or leave: the crab legs because of the corn starched slimey sauce covering the shells which made cracking and eating them an overly messy and difficult experience, the soup which lacked a little depth of flavor, the vegetables and mushroom which were over sauced and the fried rice which was just boring. The misses included: the noodles which were mushy, and what I think was geoduck in the appetizer plate which was so rubbery that if I had put a squeaker in it, would have made an excellent toy for my dogs.

Although nearly a full house, our service during the evening was impeccable. We had four different people tending to our every need pleasantly and efficiently. The pacing of the courses was also exactly as one would want.

The decor sadly has seen maybe just one too many banquets. We sat next to a wall which still had corsage pins stuck into it and glitter stuck on it from previous events. We appreciated their underground parking and elevator on this very rainy evening.

For this price point I expect a little more in the areas of food consistency and decor.

A cleaner, traditional Chinese restaurant on Main with decent Chinese dishes and some HD-TVs - good for entertaining large groups. Our family of 11 came for dim sum this morning and ordered way too much as usual. My grandma wanted to sit in a round table near the center, but we were seated in the far corner back. She was right about that. Being in the center of the action not only brought attention to our family -- every Chinese fam likes to showcase their family line to the community ;), but also was well-serviced. We felt very under served on the outskirts with slow service and few servers coming around - unimpressed.

    What I would order again:

    - Har Gau & Sui Mai
    - Lo Mai Gai (sticky rice with meat)
    - Taro balls stuffed with cha sui
    - Shrimp rice flour roll

Both noodle dishes we ordered (fat noodles with beef, and shanghai chow mein) were far too greasy.

    Tips:
    - Go for a 10AM dim sum to avoid lineups
    - Don't sit on the tables in the back or on the outskirts.
    - Relatively good washrooms for Chinese

I went here for a birthday dinner with family and I was delighted with some of their improvements with their dishes. I do like their comfortable seating, as Sun Sui Wah on Main St. has some of the best service and the roomiest seating for a Chinese restaurant in Vancouver. Even though I haven't been here for a while, the staff still remembers us.

I heard some great news, the original head chef nicknamed "Red Boy" from the from the original Sun Sui Wah location from the late 1980's and early 1990's - beside General Brock Elementary - still works at this location. He's one of the best chefs in Vancouver for this type of cuisine. If I ever eat here, I'll probably call in advance to see if this chef is working.

I started with a perfectly roasted squab which was excellent. Large, juicy, and flavourful. This is their signature dish and it just showed that they are still the best for roasted squab.

Their yin yang rice was tasty. I love the combinations of the slightly sweet and savoury flavours for just one dish.

I liked the black cod, tofu,  mushrooms dish. There were a lot of large pieces of tofu, fish and mushrooms. They all tasted very fresh.

The roasted walnuts with beef dish was great too. The walnuts were nice and crunchy with a little hint of honey. The beef was soft and tender which tasted great with some rice.

The baked tapioca pudding was a real treat. Warm and flaky on the outside, but moist of tapioca and red bean paste.

Not the cheapest dim sum in town, but the price is fair for the quality. Clean and well staffed, which is not always the case at other Vancouver dim sum restaurants.

I've been here several times for dim sum and dinner and every time I've always had the best experience! The food is always great. My most recent experience was for dinner.  We ordered so many things--hot and sour soup, and corn and chicken soup, lobster, scallops, prawns in black bean sauce, fried rice, lettuce wraps, honey garlic spare ribs, whole crispy chicken.... I am sure I am missing something.  Everything was amazing and our out of town guests were impressed with all the food. The most unique part was the dessert, which takes a long time to make so you have to pre order it. It's a cake-like thing that has red-bean paste on the bottom layer, tapioca on the second layer, and then it was topped with a sweet cake-y layer--It was soooo good!

Out of the main part of the dinner, the black bean prawns and the spare ribs were my favorite.

Food isn't cheap.. but it's delicious!

the EGG TART!! I'm swooning!! It was such a highlight of the meal, that I actually hid one next to my plate, so I could have it as my very last bite. YUM!!

The rest of the dim sum was good too!  I'm not a very adventurous or authentic dim sum eater. I like the 'Americanized' stuff like sesame balls, fish noodles, conji, steamed veggies, etc. etc. So, no comment on things like chicken feet, or other organs. I did see those things passing by, but rest assured, they also have plenty of delicious food for dim sum noobs to enjoy!

The price was not too shabby either, around $3-$5 for most plates!

    Review for Dim Sum ONLY.

First time at this restaurant. What can I say, except this place is awesome. They didn't have the traditional people coming around in carts and instead you have to order from a menu list.

The food was all yummy especially the Har Gau, the outside wrap is just perfectly firm, steaming hot and tasty, Pai Gwat (steamed spareribs) perfectly seasoned, Turnip cake not too greasy, Egg custard tarts, flaky shell, filling was silky smooth, creamy and rich, the Ha fun (shrimp noodle) was delish, I could go on and on but I might be writing for a while.

Their service was superb, staff from managers, captains, to servers were always friendly, checking up on us, refilling our drinks etc...Will definitely be back here when visiting again.

I would give this place 5 stars for their delicious Dim Sum. But the service can really sick big time starting with the hostess that seats you so they get 3 stars (and that being generous). WTF is her problem with the gigantic attitude. She should definitely be fired to increase the quality of service to this place. For those of you who don't read Chinese and need a English menu to order your food, make sure you make it clear to the ladies at the front. We didn't know there was an English version so the whole time we were waiting for someone to take our order.

It also appears that if you are a "foreigner", you get seated in a room to the right of the door. I can't confirm if this has always been the case, but from my observation today, all guest who don't speak Chinese was seated in this segregated room. Japanese, Korean, Filipinos, White, etc. Guess who was directing traffic???

The dim sum here is quite pricy, but I guess that's the going rate for the area. (around $4-5 per dish).

So this is the very first time i've ever give three stars. NOT OKAY.

I was recommended this restaurant by the concierge at the hotel I was staying at. The concierge happened to be Asian so I figured what better person to recommend an Asian restaurant than an Asian person.

Let me start off by saying the food WAS VERY GOOD. I can't lie. It was some of the best dim sum i've ever had. It was quite different from the places I had been too. There was not any Asian ladies pushing carts around and letting you pick what you wanted. There was actually a menu where you had to order your dim sum and it was brought to you by the waitress/ delivery girl.

Big issue: I DIDN'T KNOW WHO MY WAITER WAS. I literally sat there a good 10 minutes waiting for someone to approach me or ask for what I wanted to drink. When I attempted to ask one of the girls delivering the dim sum whether I could get water, she simply shouted something to the air and left. I had to ask for water to three different people. BAD SERVICE.

I also tried getting siracha or soy sauce and it took forever for someone to bring it. I was very frustrated. Lastly I did not know who to pay my check to and how to ask for it, because when ever I tried they ignored me. It was a very busy restaurant, so I can understand they're going from place to place, but it's not okay that the table next to me is constantly being attended and my table isn't.

If you want to come here for JUST the dim sum, by all means go ahead, because it is very good and delicious food. Some of the best. Keep in mind the food is phenomenal, but the service is horrible.

Yes, oh, yes! You must go here. I don't have a good dim sum place where I am from, so coming here was absolutely wonderful~!

The place is really nicely decorated, but parking sort of annoying. They have a quite a bit on their menu. I really wasn't sure how much everything cost, because my friend ordered and paid for everything. She wouldn't even let me see the bill...

The congee was so delicious. So so delicious. I think every table had a huge bowl of that, so you know that's a hit, right? The dim sum was very yummy. Honestly, it was the first time I went to a restaurant that was dedicated to dim sum, and I was very pleased.

Came here on Saturday for dim sum and even though the palatial expanse of the restaurant was filled with eager eaters, a table for us was found very quickly and the service was excellent.

I love ordering dim sum à la carte much better than having to wait for the carts to come to my table, exposed to the whims of patrons who pick the cart clean of the things I would have loved to eat.  Ordering at Sun Sui Wah is made easier for the uninitiated by virtue of a photo-album that shows and describes the available dim sum options - read (and view), then order on the lengthy sheet of options.

As usual, I ordered the unusual, together with tried and true favorites, and the quality, texture, and taste of the various morsels were just perfect!  A fabulous dim sum experience and one that, alas, I cannot duplicate back in Philadelphia.  A crying shame!

Everyone told me that dim sum in vancouver was the best.. like better then the san gabriel valley, better then in hong kong..  and when looking up dim sum in Vancouver, this is probably one of the top 3 results that show up consistantly...
in addition to alot of advertising around the airport and train stations, i thought we'd give it a try..
we ordered alot of the usual suspects of dim sum, siu mai, hargow, pork riblets, pork buns, rice noodle roll, lotus leaves stuff with glutinous rice..
I was pretty good food in all.. in a pretty typical dim sum setting.. but i'm not ready to call dim sum the BEST in vancouver based on this experience.. but definitely not a failure in any way at all.. perhaps my expectations were just too high

Best Dim Sum in BC. Notice I say BC, dim sum in Richmond is a whole different category.

This is where we stop by for dim sum almost every time we visit BC.

They can get quite busy, especially on weekends so call ahead and get a reservation. Last time we went I called right before we left the house and got seated within 5 minutes of getting there.

Their dim sum is sooooo fresh. And soooo delicious. And service is prompt.

Price wise- it came out to about $15 after tax and tip for a party of 6. Definitely worth it. Go here! Parking can be difficult, the garage gets packed so look for street parking.

Hugely disappointing. I was looking forward to an authentic dimsum experience but instead found myself in an enormous dining area packed with people so tight that there was no room for dimsum carts to go by. We were seated after 30 minutes. No one left a pencil for us to mark off the items we wanted and finally we managed to catch someones eye to get us a pencil. We were hoping to discover some new items on the dimsum menu but found it pretty standard and short. The dimsums were so-so. The tea turned bitter after a while since the tea-leaves continued to steep; there was no removable strainer that could be removed. WHat I received for hot chilli oil was bland. Did not like how the server came to our table with a handheld card scanner device at the end of our meal; that confirmed the impersonal nature of the whole experience.

San Francisco and Honolulu, followed by Minneapolis are far ahead in dimsum in my book.

10.80 Squab!  I'm all over it baby!!!

I'm not sure when this ends nor when it started, but the last time I was here they had it! :)  Look for a poster with a whole poor little bird roasted with $10.80 on it.

The squab was soooooo juicy.  It lacks a bit of seasoning, but that's what the salt/pepper mix is there for.  I want to go back for more, now that I'm thinking about it again.

Braised eggplant pot was amazing.  I normally am not a big fan of eggplant, but I'm crazy about Chinese braised eggplant.  *drools*

I wasn't big on the Ham, veg, and tofu though.  It was alright, but the ham made the dish pretty salty.  I mixed it with a lot of right lol

The service was excellent.  Totally exceeded my expectations for a Chinese restaurant.  Very attentive and didn't really need to ask for much.  Changed the plates a few times for us.  A+ for service!

wow. i'd heard dim sum in vancouver was good, but it wasn't until i had dim sum at sun sui wah that i realized how good it could be! everything we tried was high quality and delicious. the har gow was amazing! the shrimp was super fresh with a subtle hint of sesame oil, and the translucent wrapper had the right amount of chew.

i definitely recommend sun sui wah over kirin for dim sum. they take reservations, which you will definitely need on a busy weekend morning.

The infamous Sun Sui Wah. Do you live up to your reputation?

Went for dim sum lunch with our banker. Bonus points to the ample free underground parking.

Service was decent. Ordered the typical dishes. Quality was OK. Definitely not the obviously frozen, soggy fare of some places.

Did the food meet its upscale digs? Not really. But I didn't pay so it's all good.

Invited to a friends father's 60th birthday banquet party here. It was like the Never Ending Story but with food. It just kept coming and coming.  I'm quite positive, due to the compression on my vital organs from my distended stomach, I fainted between dishes 9 and 11.  While still suspect at this moment what was served for 9,10, &11, I think it was abalone, a vegetable dish, and shrimp.  When I come back to Vancouver I will re-live these lost dishes.

    1) We started with the Shark Fin soup (amazing)
    2) Roasted Quail (Loved the flavor and moistness of the quail)
    3) Peking Duck (perfect crispiness but I prefer the buns to the wrappers)
    4) Geoduck thinly sliced (loved loved the geoduck and the dipping sauce)
    5) Geoduck inerts (very tasty and again loved the sauce)
    5) Lobster (wow!)
    6) Crab (oh boy!)
    7) Steamed Rock fish with soy, scallion, ginger sauce (loved it!)
    8) Vegetables (bok choy, Chinese broccoli, mushroom)
    9) ~fainted~
    10) ~still passed out~
    11) ~still passed out~
    12) Fried rice/ noodles (okay)
    13) Sweet lotus paste bun (loved them)
    14) tapioca pudding topped red bean pie (so friggin good! The crust was similar to pineapple bun. Amazing!)

Staff was very good and constantly changed out my dirty plates. An excellent cornucopia of food with great friends.

Came here for chineze new year dinner and darn me if this place isn't JAM PACKED. Man this place is as full as my stomach after eating here. The food here is UH-MUY-ZEENG!!! (amazing)

We ordered quite a lot. There was the crab with brocoli (was alright), bao gan wai (or something like that, my friend said it's the 'aggresive chicken' or something); really good stuff, honey garlic pork spare ribs, fried fish (forgot which kind), prawn sauteed with black beans and onions, spicy eggplant hotpot (yumz) , tofu with veggies aaanndd i think that's it... there were a bunch of us hungry Asians so I forgot what we ordered.

Anyhoo, service was alright. For a top notch Chinese restaurant, service was ok. No offense to anyone but you can't really expect an excellent service in a Chinese restaurant. It was quite slow but I think it's because there are thousands of other people celebrating CNY eve in the restaurant... oh yeah I was disappointed they didn't have the quail and the roast duck.

11 tummies fed and I was stuffed like a pig eating bacon (what?!). Per person was $25, incl. tip, which aint so bad. Could've gotten cheaper in other restaurant but hey I'm not complaining.

All I have is one more comment: HAO ZHI!

Had dim sum here with 3 friends on a Sunday at peak hour of 12:00pm. It was people mountain people ocean, meaning it was packed! Waited a couple of minutes and was seated. Ordered various dim sum and I was impressed with the speed of the food arriving. Service was really good. I asked a waiter if they had water chestnut cake and he said no. I later checked the menu and they had it! Waiter you need to know your own menu bro! I ordered my favorite dessert water chestnut cake and was pleased. The waiters were more friendly than the ladies who worked there for some reason. Quality wise, I think it's great, Kirin and Prince Seafood a little better.
