Review from Kari C.
I found this place while searching Chinatown for the best sponge "cup" cake, after my previous favourite, Golden Wheat Bakery, served me a cake with a side of gossipy racial prejudice. That did not taste good.
The sponge cakes here are great. Moist, soft, puffy, eggy, and usually, fairly cold, because they are displayed right in front of the open doors, so let it come to room temp or warm it a little for the ideal tasting experience. For $1.10, I'm happy.
Thanks to Annie W's review, I found THE $2 RICE NOODLES (pork chow-fun). Do it. You have to ask for it at the counter, as it isn't on display, but I've had it 5 or 6 times now, always hot and delicious. Soft, wrinkled, wide folds of delicate, flat rice noodles that will melt in your mouth, topped with small bits of pork and chopped green onions, they come with a thimble of dark, sweet-ish soy sauce to douse the whole thing with. I believe that you can order similar chow fans at dim sum places, too, but this is convenient to eat right away, good for meandering through the neighborhood.
This morning I tried something new; the woman in line ahead of me picked up some apple tarts. They looked cute and I wanted something sugary. It was around 9 AM, they were still fresh, these puffy, flakey, child's fist-sized balls of pastry filled with the perfect amount of apple pie filling. The top was coated in sugar, which turned into a crackle during baking, and the whole thing shatters in your mouth as you bite into it, satisfying a major, buttery, apple pie craving for...Seventy cents?! Are you kidding me?!

"Fresh tasty buns and pastries"
I don't come here often, but when I do I always purchase a few of their buns. They got so many variety of buns and pastries, from savoury to sweet and everything in between. They make their products fresh everyday, so when you go inside it just smells so delicious. I've yet to try their steamed buns; it seems very popular though since there's always a line up for them. I recommend getting everything in here, it's just that delicious! -

As usual, I loaded up with lots of goodies from Maxime Bakery a few doors up before heading home to Seattle. I bought all their lemon and mango sponge cakes, and many Pi Dan So, the thousand years egg crisp ($1.30 each) and many other ones.
Couldn't help but stepping in this New Fresh when passing by. Got some more paper wrapped sponge cakes which were very good in taste and size.
Some pineapple top and chicken tails with coconut fillings. Their Mochi are also fresh and delicious. So far they have the best lower prices with fairly good products.

*****WHOLE WHEAT STEAMED BUNS!!!!!*****
Despite the fact that I haven't stepped in here in ages, I still get stuff from here through friends or coworkers or special someones who know what I like. :).
My last journey to Chinatown was when we got our hair done and she was just ravenously hungry. So our hairdresser said she would get us some buns. She gave her the money for the food and she scampered out and then back with a box of steamed buns. These were not the ordinary steamed buns with stuffing. These were the Pork and Veggie ones, but the bun part was the really special part. It was whole wheat!!!!
Yes! NO WHITE FLOUR!!
Yay! I was extremely happy.
And now to this day, I vow to alway buy my steamed buns and stuff from here when I'm in Chinatown.
It was like they were thinking about me and understood me and found a way to make whole wheat steamed buns soft and moist and tasty!
So yes a 5 star rating.
Not bad eh?
** note that while this place isn't considered diabetic friendly or healthy, it is healthier than the traditional buns. So I put it in the healthy lists for their efforts in making this whole wheat bun. -

Adding a star. Visited Sun Fresh again on my recent trip to Vancouver and found some new finds worth mentioning.
Finally got to try the rice noodles that I missed out trying on my previous visit. They were good. Large enough to be a light meal and excellently priced. I think it was $2 something. The flavor was fine, but I would suggest sprinkling a little soy or chili pepper sauce for better enjoyment.
The jau gok which are rice flour dumplings, brought back memories of the days when my grandmother used to make these for me to enjoy. Microwaving the dumplings is okay, but steaming these when you bring them home is best.
Lastly, the green tea mochi with coconut shavings on top and bean filling in the middle is my favorite find thus far here. Less than $1 for a large gooey piece. Great tasting, cheap and big. The three things that would lead to a five star review from me which I do not give out too much. Sun Fresh is getting to this plateau, but is not quite there just yet.Listed in: Bakery Bonanza - U.S. & Canada…

Review from Sasha R.
There are few pleasures that can be so hit or miss as Chinese Bakeries. Sometimes the pastries are too dry, others too eggy, and even other times there is not enough of what you thought you were getting (filling, green tea or red bean flavor etc.) But at Sun Fresh Bakery you know you are somewhere safe enough to order and get just what you're looking for. Everyone in the 10 person line that went outside the tiny bakery storefront was ordering mutli dozen rolls, breads, whatever they could.
I ordered a single coconut roll, and had no trouble at picking out a fresh one. It was delicious. It was that rare buttery, eggy, light heaven that only good Chinese pastry can be, and I was close to getting lined up for another it was THAT good. It was also so good that I kept the wrapper to share this amazing spot with Yelpers looking to find good Chinese pastry in Vancouver, this place is IT!!

There is some serious yummyness in my tummy here!
They bake everything fresh constantly throughout the hours of the day and everything is individually packed (good to bring back as treats for others!). Most everything is moist (something a lot of bakeries lack in their sweets) and not too sweet. They have the best pineapple bun and meat pastries here! -

You should know first off that you will likely be waiting in a line when you come to Sun Fresh bakery, but it will be well worth the trouble.
In my hunt for the perfect Chinese coconut bun, my personal favourite, I have come across some great, some not so great, but fortunately, the coconut bun at Sun Fresh Bakery really gave me taste I was looking for. Let it be known that you might show up and find that there are no coconut buns (or red bean bun, pork bun or steamed buns, amongst others) left, this is not an anomaly. You will learn when the best times to come in are, but I can tell you that the closer to opening time you are the better. Steam buns are constantly available from the bakery, being cooked up consistently through the day, but other items may only be available until they run out, and then: c'est la vie my friends, no light, fluffy sweet coconut goodness for you today.
In fact, you should go now and just camp out front to ensure success...! -

So far one of my favorite Chinese Bakeries. Their products are always fresh and they seem cleaner than most Chinese bakeries out there. A must try is their flat rice noodles with pork. Its about $2 and it is delicious! This bakery is the first in Vancouver that sells this type of noodle (made from scratch). Usually this noodle can be found being sold as street food in China/Hong Kong. Another note, for cake roll fans out there: their cake roll does not have a lot of cream compared to other bakeries (only thing i probably wouldnt buy from this bakery; nothing against them, but i prefer my cake roll creamy. Besides the lack of cream filling, the actual cake is yummy!)
