    This place is great.

Wi-Fi, Delicious coffee, perfectly relaxing ambiance to go catch up with a friend or bring your laptop, really sweet and friendly staff.
(To all those complaining about staff not being friendly, maybe you should try McDonald's McCafe or Starbucks--- where employees are probably required to be obnoxiously fake, if that crap makes you feel better)

They accept credit cards, really good seating selection: couches, tables, counters, coffee tables, has a cute patio, and they have a very clean restroom.

My absolute favorite coffee spot in the city.

I come here when I want to get some work done. It's open relatively late and despite the diners, it's easy to focus. Good tunes too.

ftiw I over hear a lot of compliments about the food.

Definitely an oasis in the world of rituals, four barrels and blue bottles. Quiet, serene and easy to miss. From the outside (and from the inside) you might first think that it is a mid-century furniture store. But that's part of it's charm. Why not serve coffee in a furniture store?

Definitely a place to relax and get a bit of work done.

A cappuccino is NOT a latte with more milk.

How can you charge $4 for a crappy apple tart the width of a beer coaster?

Has a nice showroom of '60s modern furniture though.

torn between wanting to tell the world or keep it my secret. love that its never crowded, love that its not overgrown with imacs, love the tiny, cute back patio, love the furniture, love the friendly baristas, love the food. I live right by philz and haus but pass them both up to come here.

come for dinner and brunch, too. cheap drinks, good food.

    Linger on a full stomach.

Typing this as I glance out the window on to 24th Street. People walking. Buses passing. Neighborhood looks alive. Love it.

Caffeinated thanks to an americano. Also hungry. Was hoping they'd have more food. Just bagels, empanadas from Venga and a house granola. Snacked on the last one. No fruit. No yogurt. But nonfat milk.

Spacious. Friendly. Free wifi. Chairs and comfy couches. Love the modern art on the wall.

Enjoyable way to pass an afternoon. Just eat first.

This place is great!  Have not been there for brunch yet, but the coffee is excellent, and the decor is super -- pure 60's with vinyl couches, swag lamps, and an array of vintage coffeepots above the counter.  Tunes were nice, barista was super friendly, and there's wifi as well.

Wow, only 3.5 stars?  Oh, how I beg to differ.

I have made it my new year's resolution to scope out and rate the best cafes in the bay area, and have rated over 40 to date.  Recently, the Mission has been my mission.  And Sugarlump (despite the fact that I despise its name, which reminds me of a trashy pop song) is one of the rare few that merits a five-star rating from my unforgiving, unabashed criticism.

I had driven past Sugarlump several times while making my way down 24th St., and 24th St. being the chaotic, unpredictable mess that it is (I just now passed a half-clad gentleman on the street shouting about how he had just f***** a pig in the a** at the corner meat counter), nearly landed myself in a fender-bender as Sugarlump's striking interior caught--and held--my attention from the seemingly faraway land of my driver's seat.

When I finally did get a chance to visit, I was elated to see that Sugarlump does in fact impart the same otherworldly (or, at least, other-Mission-ly) vibe I had sensed from my lonely car seat quite truthfully.  While the insanity of the Mission District progresses in full force on one of its busiest drags, Sugarlump's interior offers a radical departure--an oasis of sorts--from the tumultuous world outside.

The interior is dimly lit and cozy, but may be interpreted by some as dark and cavernous.  Nonetheless, the lighting is artfully placed and sufficient at all seating locations, and typically emanates from some funky retro fixture.  The furniture is similarly mod and eclectic, with pieces ranging from full-length pleather couches to Jetsons-esque swiveling barstools and all-encompassing, sink-your-body-into-me leather office chairs pulled snugly up to spacious wooden tables (and of course, strategically surrounded by outlets).  The layout offers a wide enough variety of seating options to make this café the perfect destination for a solo work jam, meet-up with a group, or more intimate one-on-one--both socializing and privacy are welcomed and possible here.

I immediately fell in love with the eclectic offering of sweets and treats, which consisted of the more standard fare (croissants, bagels, muffins, etc.), crunchy goodies for the hipsters (vegan baked goods and organic fruit), and even a little homage to the District's Latino roots in Inka Snacks and alfajores.  Love!

I had a soy café au lait, lemon green yerba mate, and a vegan peanut butter cookie that was about the size of a hubcap.  I am happy to report that all gastronomic experiences were excellent.  You know how that feeling of something tasting really good starts to wane after the first few bites or sips?  I never experienced that with anything I ordered here.  Win!

I came in during an off-peak hour, at around 6:30 p.m. on a weeknight, so business was slow and the place was effectively deserted.  As nice as it was to have the place to myself (I had about 30 seating options to choose from and the cute barista's full attention), I'd like to come back during a busier hour and see how the service and ambiance compare.

Scratch that "I'd like"--I will definitely be back to Sugarlump.

(...my lump, my lump my lump my lump!  My lovely Sugarlump! Checkitout!)

Walking down street and lured in by the promise on a sign that read "Saturday Happy Hour 5-7, $2 Tecates."

Entered a super-sweet space full of people much hipper than I sipping coffee. Eyeballed the clock on the wall and willed it to rush along to the Magic Hour of 5 PM, then immediately jumped up from my wi-fi session to order an icy cold beer at the counter.

$2. Beer. Wifi. And some decent tunes while you watch people on the crazy shady street on 24th. 4 stars in any world.

I come here semi regularly to do homework, and there has to be a reason I frequent this coffee shop, right? It's not the coffee, that's for certain.

The espresso is pretty decent. The nicest thing about this shop is that it's spacious and has plenty of seating. Even on a busy day, there is someplace to sit and get started on work while you hope for a table with a bit more elbow room and a nearby outlet. The internet gets kinda slow when a lot of people are working on it, but that's hardly a legitimate complaint.

My main qualm with Sugarlump is odd. Tuesday nights, the barista working has TERRIBLE taste in music, and everyone inside is subjected to it all night long. I actually think he tries to play extra obnoxious music simply for the sake of playing really obnoxious music*.

You know those songs that movie directors use during a bad acid trip montage? Normal speed music with s.l.o.w.e.d down downtuned and octaves lower vocals? Yeah. He plays that.

So steer clear on a Tuesday night, but the place is nice other than that!

*I am the first to admit that my musical tastes are too broad and that I subject too many friends and loved ones to awful music at times, but this guy puts me to shame.

I am a new member of the unemployed ranks. IIt has afforded me great amounts of time with which to decide what to do with my time.  A friend told me to stop wasting my life away on the couch watching reruns of Arrested Development and join him to grab coffee, eat some morsels of food, and do some work at Sugarlump. We hiked over there (from 14th and Valencia) and, needless to say, I was revved up by the time I got there. I must have been delirious, because I veered off my normal morning course and went with mint tea instead of coffee. The key element to my order, however, was the empanada. I went with the roasted red pepper flavor and after the barista had fired it up in their magic empanada heating device, I dug in. Fantastic flavors and it made me happy.  Throw in an excellent collection of art deco and other retro furniture, free wi-fi, and available power outlets, I was hooked!

Coffee anyone?  How about tea?  Sugarlump has a little bit of exactly what you need mixed with a lot of character packed into a relatively small space.  This coffee/tea hangout is where I imagine everyone going to escape from the Mission, located in the heart of the mission on 24th street.  There are several spots to choose form when it comes to picking a seat.  You can lounge by the fireplace (yes they have one!) on a comfy couch or hide out in the far back of the shoppe while you discuss business.  Or if you want to be seen there are two window locations with great people-watching views.

If I lived closer I would definitely make it a regular hangout. Go, enjoy, sip!

Hands down the best freakin ICED SOY COFFEE I've had in a billion years. Yes a billion years. The coffee is soo amazing that it takes me to a nostalgic place I have never been before.  Sooo sooo sooo amazing!!!

Not only is the coffee great, but Sugarlump is doing their part to be eco-friendly and sustainable. It brings such joy to my heart to know that I am supporting an HONEST company. So hard to find in this corrupt day and age.

I honestly don't even want to write this review because this place is so good. I want to keep it my little secret.

When you enter the forbidden Sugarlump Coffee Lounge it is like no coffee bar you have ever been to before so brace yourself. You step into a sophisticated stylish cult like snazzy leather lounge. By cult-like I mean that the people that hangout here usually keep to themselves and have some important task at hand. This place rocks because it is quiet and a nice place to work if you are lucky enough to find a cozy nook.

This is by far my new favorite coffee bar. It is comfortable and quiet enough to study. The coffee is delish! What more could a coffee connoisseur ask for?

-Don't forget to bring CASH ONLY!!!
-Parking is tricky so you might as well just bus it.

I don't see any reason to go to any other cafe in the mission after spending time at sugarlump. not only is the coffee great, baristas efficient and friendly and space roomy enough to spend without overhearing another's conversation, but also this place just rocks the mid-century-mod look with original pieces of plycraft, saarinen (or saarinen knock-offs) and the rest. i love what they did to the place! and now they are open for dinner, wine and beer at night! i can't believe the place isn't packed every night. must be the location, location, location, off bryant on 24th. for the owners' sake, i hope it is discovered soon. selfishly, i love the fact that i can always find a great place to sit and hang with a friend or by myself.
a stellar coffeehouse in an interesting, changing part of the mission.

    1. Good looking coffee shop.
    2. Poor dessert selection.
    3. Asked for a sweet iced coffee...got a plastic cup with straight coffee and ice. I had to put the milk and sugar myself. Horse shit! I have to make my own damned ice coffee?! Guess I've been spoiled by Starbucks.

Bottom Line: This place should be called "Lump of Coal Coffee"...Not going back.

    -Good espresso.

    Shame about the...

    -Never working/filled soap dispenser
    -Rarely cleaned toilet

I'm cool with a bit of filth and whatnot, but at least give me a chance to wash my hands.  Hell, I'm cool with a lot of filth...but if the toilet is hairy enough to need a shave it needs to be cleaned more often (especially if I come here for several consecutive days and start to recognize the pube pattern on the bowl).

Great atmosphere, friendly service, and tea was good! I haven't tried the coffee yet, but I loved the very homey feel. They nailed it with the lights, furniture and fireplace. It was a little dirty and could have used some love. There were flies hanging around the back around the bussing station and the tables also needed cleaning. But I got a smile from behind the counter. My gal pal didn't like it because they didn't have Splenda or Torrani syrups which she likes to doctor up her coffee. But for the coffee or tea purist, it's a great spot.

More stars would have been given if the place was cleaner. Othewise, I loved it.

I admit I was excited by the name alone, this evening, when Kevin L.'s cousin proposed the idea!

Naturally, I had no idea what to expect out of this coffee shop (err, lounge), given the neighborhood. Though we'd just come off Humphry Slocombe, so I was feeling mighty fine, and willing to take the chance.

Sugarlump was adorable - retro seating, a nice fireplace-esque piece in the middle of the room, music to suit the mood - the ambiance was exquisite! It felt like a cross between a cozy mountain lodge (like the Big Foot Lodge in LA), an art gallery, a retro home design store, and a Mission hipster hang-out. It was splendid. And perfect.

This has become a favorite place to sit and have coffee while checking the morning's email before heading out to work. Coffee beverages are rich and satisfying, pastries are fresh. When the lady is working behind the counter, service is friendly and bright. When it's the guy, things are less friendly and quite a bit slower, so now I tend to peek in and see who's behind the counter before I go inside. I'd like to check out the evening/weekend brunch options soon. :)

An absolute nigh-perfect coffee joint. Cooler than a Unicorn in a Fonzie jacket with a horn that makes snowcones. Sadly however, the coffee's a bit sad.

Impression; if one liked the coffee here, ones coffee was likely be-sugared and the color of buckskin. I coffeed here with a couple of my barista pals (who savvy coffee) and we all agreed that while the java was nothing special, we still loved the place.

But...cute, friendly kids work here. They are cool, yet still friendly. I both like them AND want to like them. Furnishings and fixtures are straight from the sophisticated international rumpus room of my dreams. Swively barstools everywhere! Cool lamps! Actual books you could imagine reading line the shelves! Decor/lighting are muted/sexy!

But, also...who the hell even cares about the coffee at a coffee place anymore? Maybe Sugarlump SHOULD keep pouring Bog Standard brew here for all every, ahem, "Wi-Fi whore of a table-squatting trendspotter who'll ruin this place in less than six months" will care. And whatever happened to homeworkers who actually worked from home?

So I love this place, so what? I'm sure it'll suck eventually, but until then someone who obviously cared about MOST of the details got plenty of them right. And I plan on closing this joint soon with a few cups of their average coffee and a little sneaky pete. Now what I mean?

Sugarlump is alright. They've got plenty of seats [some nifty looking ones in the back] and outlets. There's wireless internet [the main reason I go to ANY coffee shop]. It's in the Mission and just a block away from St. Francis Fountain. They serve Vietnamese coffee, and the baristas are all hipstered out.

    What else?

I don't dislike it, but unless others [some of my friends like this place] want to meet up here, I'll likely not return. I've experienced better, but can't bring myself to give the place two stars. Sometimes you just click. And other times, no matter how hard you try, you can't figure out why you just don't mesh well. This is one of those places.

Or maybe it's the swarm of fruit flies right outside the door... I'm not sure.

It's was almost like a university library, folks quietly working away on their MacBooks. I enjoyed a simple green tea and chocolate chip cookie, the atmosphere is retro 70's-ish, but reasonably comfortable. There is a warm looking gas stove in the middle of the room, but it was still a little chilly (we Bay Area types can't handle the cold).

The guy behind the counter was super nice and gave me refills on my tea water. If I lived in the 'hood I could see chilling here on occasion, real rating is somewhere between 3 and 3.5.

The coffee is fine, the service is nice, and I like all of the sitting areas. Sugarlump has a really cute atmosphere but I worry about the cleanliness. There was an entire colony of fruit flies in the pastry holder, and the milk/sugar area looked like it had a few days' of bacteria on it. There are so many awesome cafes in the area I'm not sure I'll be back.

I have mixed feelings about Sugarlump and here's why. You see, I have a thing for mid-century modern design. Eames, Noguchi, Knoll, Eichler. Pitter patter goes my heart. In that way, Sugarlump does it for me in ways that make me all tingly inside. Plus the layout is great for those who want to work - many outlets, great lighting, cozy seating arrangements, late hours. Kudos to the designer for an inspired eye and great sense of aesthetic.

However there's something that really bugs me about Sugarlump. Something to do with the air of exclusivity, coldness and elitism. The unfriendly and nasty staff doesn't help any. Nor does the obviously class-segregated customer base. As a result, only one type of person really feels welcome here - the notoriously unaware MacBook demographic (who seemed to have wandered in from the equally segregated but not as obnoxious St. Francis Fountain aka Boogaloos East).

The result? A vibe that says: "Screw you." to the local community. Probably acceptable in some warehouse stretch in SOMA or in the already-Hipster-overrun Valencia corridor. But obnoxious and obtrusive when plunked in the middle of a vibrant community-focused working-class neighborhood.

Imagine how appalled you'd feel if a Cheescake Factory opened in the middle of Mission Dolores or Hayes Valley. Totally rude, right?

Sugarlump is invading 24th Street's space in a similar way

Can a newcomer be respectful of  the existing community vibe and still be cool? Sure, it's been done before and in a myriad of ways - see my review of NYC's Nublu or just walk across the street to more inclusive L's Caffe http://www.yelp.com/bi... for good examples. Somehow I have a feeling local families don't walk into L's, look around uncomfortably and then immediately turn around and leave. I've seen this happen at Sugarlump - ancedotal yes, but still relevant.

Unfortunately, Sugarlump dissolves in face of this challenge. Isolating and segregating, instead of encompassing and welcoming.  It would be great if  Sugarlump could somehow turn the vibe around - for its own sake, and for the sake of the community it has placed itself within. Until then, my design fetish will have to be indulged elsewhere.

I like the decor and music in here, but I found the seating to be a bit awkward for getting work done. The chairs aren't properly size-matched to the tables, forcing you to either hunch or have to reach. Also one of the baristas (black hair, tallish, and tattoos on his arm, if memory serves me correct) was being an asshole to a cute coworker barista and kept on issuing profanities with his non-inside voice. Not cool, brosef.

Some days I want it to rain, I want to have messy hair, I want to be grumpy or at least shoot a few disapproving glances at folks who probably don't deserve it. On those days I really  miss Seattle and I really wish there were better coffee shops in SF.

Sugarlump comes as close to a Seattle coffee shop as I've found. And hallelujah it's open until 10:00PM. Sure, it's not the post-midnight I've been craving but since most places close before 8:00 I'll take what I can get.

I can't speak to the coffee since I was over caffeinated by the time I got here but the soy hot chocolate was richer than most and only $2! That is ridiculously cheap and makes me think they actually found their MCM furniture as opposed to buying the new trendy stuff. Huzzah. Uh oh, I better settle back down into a misanthropic coffee shop patron lest they kick me out for ruining the very atmosphere I came here to enjoy.

Wow how exciting a new coffee shop in the neighborhood.  For decades there was not a one in the hood and now we have them popping up left and right.  Better for us, more choices.

How disappointed I was when I walked into the uber trendy spot with great art and amazing space.  But alas, beauty is only skin deep here. (sound familiar?  it should - check out my review for Lime).  While the look and feel of this place is in somewhat of a contrast to the current hood (I kinda like that) the biggest disappointment is the attitude you get from people who run this joint.

NEWS FLASH!  You ain't better than everyone else.....get over your fuckin Hipster selves!

Thank god for increasingly better competition popping up all over the place around the hood...and you don't have to walk very far to find good coffee - Sacred Grounds, Philz Coffee, L's Cafe and a new one on Harrison Street.  Skip this BIMBO!

With L's caffe directly across from sugarlump I have to wonder why people would go here. The answer I come up with is that the two coffee shops have two very different vibes. L's caffe is warm, and welcoming, and the sisters that own the shop are the sweetest people ever. You can say that it's more representative of the neighborhood. Sugarlump feels more loungy. The decor is a hybrid of valencia st. furniture and Frank Lloyd Wright inspired fireplace and color schemes. I can picture 007 meeting up with octopussy for a late night rendezvous at sugarlump. That's how loungy-cool it is.

Also it's really dim in here, perhaps a little too dim for studying or reading. I think this coffee shop is better suited for chatting with friends or relaxing than it is for studying. The coffee here takes second stage to the interiors, but given that it just opened I figure there is room for improvement in that area.

Wow. Near 24th and York streets, near the famous York Street Fountain (which I love,) is this brand spankin' new coffeehouse, Sugarlump.

Maybe it was because it was pouring rain outside-- but entering this space was like entering a new dimension - So unique, with such a friendly atmosphere! The furniture is retro 60s/70s and I was somewhat wary to sit on it because it was pretty fancy, actually!

The chicken/mushroom Pot Pie was perfect for lunch, and my hot cocoa arrived PIPING hot! Staff was friendly, the space and the atmosphere was welcoming and fun.

Free WiFi was a huge unexpected plus! A really, really cool space, and great staff.

    What I like:

~ I love the coziness of the space in all its muted fall colors that make me feel like I'm plotting my defection from the former communist Germany cr. 1971. Love it!

~ The beautiful people, the beautiful people.

~ I only ever get the soy latte so I can't speak to the rest of it, but I find my latte to be spot on every single time.

~ It's blocks from my house.

    ~ It's locally owned, it's organicle.

    What I don't like:

~ The service is hit-and-miss. Sometimes the kids behind the counter are sort of friendly and sometimes they look at you like you just farted. Sometimes they serve you right away, sometimes you wait until they have finished describing last night's drunken exploits to the tattooed wonder ahead of you. Sometimes the strange man who may or may not be the owner will acknowledge you, sometimes he stares right through you and then leaves his post behind the counter altogether.

~ Not good choice if you're in a hurry.

Aside: I'm no hipster, but I am a Chicana who wants to defend Sugarlump against accusations of gentrification. Since when are working class immigrant families deserved only of dodgy taquerias, jank-ass liquor stores, and cheap artery-clogging Chinese donut take-out? The implication is that the locals might be frightened away by anything less than some crusty, squalid, poorly-managed shithole. WRONG! As my Gran might say "La gente extrana pero el cafe, ricisimo".

Working from home isn't all it's cracked up to be...especially when you have the attention span of a crayon wielding pre-schooler.

Luckily, Sugarlump is the perfect "office" away from home.   Quiet, spacious, not crowded during the day, and mellow background music at a low volume.   Plus, EVERY single person in here is on their laptop...meaning no social "noise" to contend with.

This place is going to help me power through my somewhat tedious side job of editing audio books.   Plus, cute girls might mistakenly think I'm a dope musician working on some phat beats, yo....when, in fact, I'm  actually listening to some British guy narrate Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde...good times.

Met a friend from college @ Sugarlump to catch up.  I must admit, I live well within walking distance and pass Sugarlump all the time on my way to Casa Luca or the library.  It's a cute place, Marina-in-the-Mission-ish.  I had the chai which I personally prefer to be a little more spicy.  The seats are super comfy, I could've definitely taken a nap in them.

Looks like they carry Mission Minis (I could be wrong).  I would give it a second try to try other items from the menu.

Great trendy place, hands down my favorite coffee shop to work in in the mission. Retro furniture, a great layout, lots of outlets and free (although not necessarily always reliable) wifi make it an ideal place for grabbing a coffee and programming all afternoon. Not overhyped like Philz and never as crowded, I'm happy to walk the couple extra blocks for the comfort of Sugarlump. Besides the ambiance however, the coffee is pretty standard (the vietnamese iced coffee is pretty great though), the staff is polite but don't go out of their way for you, and sometimes the music gets a bit too weird.

Overall though, I prefer this place to Haus and Philz, but then again, I'm not really a coffee snob.

Comfortable inviting interior, chill music and friendly staff. What more could you want in a cafe?

My friends and I come here to work a lot. The staff is always welcoming and helpful and don't get pissy when we work for 5 hours straight and only buy one coffee.

The only downside is that the coed bathroom always smells like stale urine. I would definitely recommend working on that.
