Strange Adventures was my go-to comic book store when I was a kid and would make day trips to the 'big city' with my dad. Since reaching adulthood I have chosen to spend my money on other pursuits, such as alcohol and the opposite sex.
My love for this business continues though. It's the very definition of a hole-in-the-wall, with a doorway you have to hunch over to get into, and a small location that is jam-packed with comics, graphic novels, toys (let's not kid ourselves by calling them "collectibles; you may collect them, but they're still toys) and various random items.
I don't currently follow any comic series but it's a great location to get nerdy Christmas gifts for friends and I enjoy popping in now and then to see what's on the go in my beloved land of geekiness. Hail to thee, Strange Adventures, for setting the bar high and keeping comic culture alive and well in Halifax. -

As nerdy as I am (you name it, if it has the word Star in it, I've seen it. Papadama and Male Reynolds are my top captains), I'm only a casual comic book reader. Therefore, I don't find cause often enough to visit this place.
However, I do cherish my few visits. There's just something about the musty smell combined with so many gorgeous things to look at that make me feel like home here.
I know I can come here for specialty items like figs, D&D gifts, games, and other nerdy collectibles.
I do have to mention, though, that some of their prices on things like games aren't always competitive. But I don't always mind as they have stellar staff, and great customer service has no price.Listed in: Rocktober: 30-Day Yelp…

Comic book shops can easily feel like dens of dudes. Which can intimidate the female geek very easily. I've been in my fair share of comic shops where I felt both horribly outgeeked and like an intruder.
Not so in Strange Adventures. There is a huge variety of stuff in this little underground niche. There are whole sections that cater to the Whedonite types and lovers of indie comics. There are the standards here, but there's also a great selection of local comics and indie books. There's also way more stuff there than you would think. Each corner reveals something new and cool. -

Love the store, and never had any really problems, tho the rpg section is kinda small (small complaint), otherwise, I have been a customer since it started, and happily volunteer for FCBD, almost like working there :)

Unlike Adam S, I'm not really a geek. Or at least not in the traditional sense. I don't get most obscure other-worldly references, I can't quote issue numbers when blah blah fought the blah blah and turned into the blah blah, and typically I never care more about superheroes than when they're turned into blockbuster movies with beautiful people playing the parts.
So basically around the time that all the comic puritans start calling the franchise a sell-out for the masses. (I'm the masses.)
That said, I'm totally geek-adjacent. I WANT to know and I WANT to care and frankly, I've always been a little X-Men obsessed. Ever need to distract me for a couple of hours? Just toss me into the Marvel wikipedia pages...I won't come up for air for days.
The point that I'm trying to make here is that whether you're a cast member of the Big Bang Theory, or more like me, Strange Adventures is for you. Actually, anyone with an imagination can fuel up in this small shop of many wonders.
In a fittingly dark space down a couple of steps off Sackville Street, you truly can lose yourself amidst the books, comics, action figures, and collectibles. And more than just superheroes, if it has been illustrated or integrated into pop culture, it's likely tucked away on one of these shelves. Picture everything from Betty Boop to beautiful books on Atlantic Canadian sea monster myths. It's really one of those spaces in Halifax that everyone should visit at one point or another no matter what their level of geekery.
I haven't worked up the guts to ask the owner a question but I hear that he really is your guy when it comes to hard-to-finds, including special orders when there's availability. I don't feel like I've 'earned' the privilege yet...but some day you'll be able to read that story in Issue #37 of Yelp-Dude. -

Strange Adventures has a great selection of books but the store is very small, the lighting is not great, and the staff could smile once in a while.
I never was once asked if I needed help looking for something and when I did ask the girl behind the counter responded rudely.
I'd rather go somewhere else with better service. -

When I was younger I used to beg my parents to drop me off in Halifax just for Strange Adventures. Even today I head downtown just to pick up some comics. The store is a nice mix of all types of comics. Manga, local artists, DC, Marvel, and graphic novels. They have a good selection of obscure and independent comics. Back before this whole internet thing Strange Adventures was the only place to feed my manga and comic fix. There are also a ton of anime, comic, video game, and all around nerdy collectibles/memorabilia. Strange Adventures is packed to the rafters (neatly) with stuff.
In addition to having an amazing comic catalog they also hold regular sales where you can get amazing deals. Once a year or so they hold a sale where every day the discount becomes greater and greater. Eventually a whole bunch of stuff was 90% off. We managed to pick up three or four really great board games and ten giant graphic novels for what felt like stealing. Almost every Free Comic Book Day I've managed to pick up some great finds.
There is a good selection of board games. A mix of family games, nerdy classics like Catan and Ticket to Ride, and serious strategic ones. The only thing I've found about the games is that when they're not on sale they can be a bit more pricey than normal. The obscure games are a good price, but some of the popular ones are above what you'd find elsewhere. If you're willing to wait though you can get a good deal.
I also love how they air nerdy movies and shows on their TV and encourage people to sit and watch. It gives me warm feelings of nostalgia to see some Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles while I browse. -

As a self-proclaimed geek, I am bound by law to visit at least one comic book shop every month. My monthly pilgrimage to Strange Adventures is always a treat.
In terms of physical space, this shop is definitely on the small end. But compared to other larger shops, the selection feels much larger. There is very little space that is not being used to display comic books, action figures, board games, or other nerd paraphernalia.
The staff here have always been very friendly and helpful. I may be a geek, but I'm not a particularly *good* geek and the majority of my comic purchases are issues of the monthly Buffy the Vampire Slayer series. The staff members have never once made me feel inferior for not having an intimate knowledge of every book published under Alan Moore's name. So yay to them! I've also seen them helpfully directing clueless parents to comics that their children would likely enjoy. Double yay!
True comic fans should be happy to know that, although Strange Adventures closes at 6 pm on most nights, they do have extended hours (open until 8 pm) on Wednesday nights, when most new comics are released.
Strange Adventures lives in the pantheon of local shopping legends and for good reason: it's about as close to geek heaven as you're likely to find in Halifax. -

As a long time comic reader and having experienced most of the comic shops in Halifax / Dartmouth over the last 2+ decades (Wilkie's on Robie, Odyssey on Barrington era and up), I can say with 100% certainty that Strange Adventures is to date, the best comic shop in H.R.M.
I don't go in there much these days as when I did hold an account a few years ago my wide range of comic tastes always ran up a sizable bill. I do get trade paperbacks tho from time to time and I collect comic toys / action figures of which S.A has a nice selection of.
As far as the staff goes, they KNOW comics, i mean really know. In fact myself and two co-workers of mine (who frequent the store regularly) often come up with obscure comic trivia in the office which they will then quiz the staff when they visit to see if they know the answer. I think they've come up with the answer pretty much every time. -

Strange Adventures Comic Shop is really one step above the others. We went here for a copy of The Watchman. I just love this place, small packed with a comic from every era.
I even found figures of Smurfs, can you believe it! There is really something here for everyone. You can spend a lot of time in here.
We can't wait for this weekend for the special event on Saturday.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Strange Adventures is a place to visit when you are DT Halifax. Unique to its own it is amazing. When I first walked in my head was everywhere looking and pointing.
I could never really understand the hype about comic books but WOW I got it that day. I am really not into all the different names of the NEW characters but I remember my son being smaller and was fascinated with Spawn, I think he had every character.
From the old school boys of Superman and Batman there are so many new ones it is confusing. It was actually educational learning all about the different books and trading cards. And OMG don't be making cracks as these guys take this stuff seriously.
Take your children to this place as they will love it and I would imagine that you would be leaving with a book or two. -

I headed to this (supposedly) world-famous comic shop to hunt for board games because I am a big nerd and I need more of them. The game selection here is pretty decent - two shelving units full of board and card games including all the hotties like Catan, Carcasone, Blockus, Ticket to Ride, etc., plus a fair number of others that I haven't tried. They have all of the Carcasone and Settlers expansion packs, as well. Prices are reasonable comparatively, with a basic Catan setting you back about $40 and an expansion costing $23. If you're into D&D they had a moderate collection of books on hand.
Nerrrrrd. I know. Anywho, as there don't seem to be too many game shops in Halifax, this is a good resource to have right downtown.
After sussing out the gaming situation I spent some time leafing through graphic novels that I hadn't seen before, including a few by local and pan-Canadian authors (I totally appreciate that these are marked as such). Overhearing the owner talk with other customers, it was clear that he knew his stuff; he seemed to have information to offer on anything that was picked up in the store, which is more impressive when you're talking books and comics than say, fruits and vegetables. It means he's probably read most of what comes through, or is at least up to date on everything. This place is a must stop for comic-lovers in town, and board gamers who need to supplement their collections.
Plus they have an awesome, hobbit-sized door that makes the store impossible not to love. -

Strange Adventures was once voted the greatest comic book store in the world. I have the Superman comics to prove it. Sure, it was during that weird "nu-costume" phase for the Man of Steel, but it still happened. This leaves Strange Adventures with a lot of hype to live up to.
And for the most part, it does.
Now, it's debatable whether or not Strange Adventures is the best comic book store in the world, but there is no denying it is the best comic book store in Halifax...in Nova Scotia...in the Maritimes. It may not be the biggest space, but it crams every inch of its tiny location with everything a comic book fan could want.
The staff is honest and generally eager to help, though I imagine they would prefer you have a little knowledge before you start asking questions. Recently I was looking for info on Marvel's Civil War series, but I wasn't sure exactly what I needed. The staff was happy to help me pick out what was core story and what was supplemental material, what was worth my time and what was not. It was nice to have a little honesty - to know I didn't necessarily need to read every book tied to the series. I was also recommended books that dealt with the aftermath. It was nice to have somebody take that next step to help me as a customer.
From the major players to local talent, Strange Adventures is filled with books and collectibles to discover. From Ghost World to Ghost Rider, this place has it all. -

Crammed into a tiny space on Sackville Street is Cal Johnton's Strange Adventures comic book shop. Callum is the unofficial king of comic books in Halifax. The shop features a wide selection of comics, graphic novel and manga, both used and new, plus some novelty items, or perhaps I should say, "collectors' items." They take this stuff seriously, as you probably know. Cal can be a bit gruff, but he knows his stuff. Hey, that rhymes.
