I've been wanting to try Stone Grill for quite a while and finally decided to come one day with a coupon from my Entertainment Coupon Book. We were seated very promptly and were given a table right by the window with a beautfiul view of Granville Island. Unfortunately, the window itself was pretty nasty, with lots of bird poop covering it, and it is in deifntei need of some cleaning.
Our server was really nice and took the time to explain how the food is cooked and how everything worked. We ended up ordering the Surf And Turf dinner which came with a wonderful cut of steak, a lobster tail, and vergtasbles on the side. The meat is raw and is placed on a piece of hot stone so that you can cook your own meat as you eat it. I must say, the steak was absolutely amazing and it must've been one of the best I've ever had. The beef is top quality and melts in your mouth.. yum! The lobster tail was also good as well (apparently it is sashimi grade0, and came with butter to dip in.
I believe for around an extra $15, you can also get an appetizer and dessert with your dinner to make ita full 3 -course meal. I must admit, dinner here is pretty pricey, with my coupon I was able to get a decent discount, but without hte cou-on our meal would've esily cost over $100 for 2 people.
All in all, I love their concept and probably would come back for a special occassion. -

This was one of the most memorable steaks I have ever eaten. The cut of meat was exceptionally high-quality and the wait staff tutors you about how to cook it to your liking. It comes with minimal seasoning (s&p) but you can order additional options. I am a purist with steak, so I was happy with just s&p.
The wait staff was a little slow, but the food and ambiance made up for it. The restaurant overlooks the water and is across from Granville Island - very picturesque and charming. -

Probably more of a 4star for the overall experience: service, locale, view, lots of parking & no pressure to leave when you're done. Pretty relaxing & great place to hang and drink, admire the night view.
I usually order the sea bass, which is amazingly delicious, love the sizzling & i get to cook it to the point where it's crispy along the edges. It's pretty fresh as you can see the way it flakes off.
some people complain about paying this kind of $$ to cook, but i look at as a different experience. Every bite's warm!
Though I do warn about your clothes smelling like bbq lol. just don't wear those to work. -

I heard so much about Stonegrill for so long that I was looking forward to attending an event at their Granville street location.
The place is nice. Right by the ocean, across from Granvile Island, with big windows, you can really have a good view.
When it comes to the food however... my father likes it, he likes the stone grilling experience and liked the food that time he went.
Myself, however.... lets start with the bar.... is it a full bar? Because they seemed very limited in drinks.
The appetizers they served...chicken spring rolls, tomato on bruchetta, and deep fried tofu cakes, all were poorly exectuted. Tasted like I could have unfrozen them myself from Superstore and microwaved them.
The beef.... they had two cooks on their raised seating area work with three stones to cook us small rectangular cuts of beef. This was the moment I was waiting for, what better way than to taste Stone cooking than to try their beef!
These was as bad, or even worse, than the appetizers. The problem was that the beef was all very tough and too chewy. Many people complained about that. And it was also underseasoned and the beef had no taste. Walmart beef would have tasted better.
I had heard that Stonegrill wasn't making any money these last while, so I can surmise that they are cutting corners here. Unfortunately, when you cut corners and serve mediocre food, you get poor reviews.
I wonder if they were different when things in the restaurant environment was better? I'll probably never know. -

Went here for lunch one day not really knowing what to expect. Like everyone says, the decor and ambiance is impressive making this a perfect place for a date or special occasion.
We were 1 of only 3 tables at the time, but service was courteous, quick and attentive. I was a bit shocked at the menu prices, though the lunch specials offer a reasonable amount of food for the price. I can't remember how much it cost exactly, probably around $30 per person. The meal included bread to begin with, a cup of delicious soup, a side of coffee or tea, and the entree with sides of vegetables.
The presentation of the food was unique and appealed to all the senses, as the sounds of the grilling salmon held me in anticipation. True, there was no marinade, however, the stone was sprinkled with sea salt and the accompanying lemon on the salmon provided enough flavor for me. I also had to grill the veggies, which were raw as well, while the potatoes i think were lightly fried. The sauce was nice and creamy and paired well with all aspects of the meal.
Stonegrill was definitely an experience. It was beautiful and a novel place to eat. I'm glad I went, but I'll probably wait to go again after saving up some money :) -

The very first time I went to Stonegrill, I was blown away. The prices were high, but the quality of the meat was unbelievable and I thought it was well worth the price.
Now, while Stonegrill is certainly a high-quality food restaurant, I think I was caught up a little bit in the novelty of the cook your own food concept and thought better of it than it actually was.
Yes, the meat is a very high quality, and it is flavourful and classy. But I think the concept gets a little too old to be some place to regularly dine.
I still go there occasionally, and will return. But it's also a little too expensive. -

Unimpressive. Food was bland. Luckily we had 2 for 1 coupons. There was the 4 of us and even with the coupons, it was still pricey. Between the 4 of us we had 2 bottles of wine.
None of the food is marinated. Seriously I burn better food at my summer BBQs and I can feed 40 people. Have you ever BBQed non-marinated meats and veggies? What's it taste like? Nothing that's what.
So apparently I paid for a hot stone to cook on, with food that has been pre-cut. That's it. I think I can fillet a fish and cut a up a vegetable. I imagine if I did that for guests in my home they'd leave telling me I'm not really a chef. I don't even remember the dip anymore.
And NO. Food does not taste better on a special rock no matter where it came from.
PRICE: Way overpriced. Just a gimmick don't fall for it.
SERVICE: Very good service. I have a problem with the arrangements not the excellent staff.
They give you a short explanation on how to cook on a rock. I think I know how too unless I'm Rain Man:
1) Get food.
2) Put food on rock.
3) Eat food whenever you want.
"Hi is it your first time here?"
Me: "Yep, but I think I get the point. Don't insult me."
SUGGEST: It'd be fine if it wasn't so pricey. Its got a great atmosphere and the view is wonderful. But if you're gonna spend upwards of $50-80pp with drinks, mind as well get your food superbly cooked by a chef.
Other places have done this as well for some of their side dishes, but at least their meat is marinated. -

My coworker and I came to BC for business and we were looking for an awesome restaurant...We tried Stonegrill (which was referred to us by another business) and we loved it!!!!! The next day, we had the choice to eat anywhere else but after driving around...seeing other menus...prices...etc, we found ourselves back at Stonegrill again! The filet is definitely a hit! 12 oz or 6 oz....the prawns, mussells, and scallops were to die for!!!! We loved it there!
Service...excellent! Marco is awesome as well as everybody else there!
THANKS FOR THE GREAT SERVICE AND FOOD! THIS IS DEFINITELY A PLACE WE ARE COMING BACK TO!!!!
Advice: If you are ordering steak and seafood, ask for the seafood to come out first....then ask for the steak after you finish the seafood...in that way, you are not in a rush to cook both... -

The name of the restaurant speaks for itself (Hint: it involves a stone and some grilling).
Where did the concept of grilling food on stone came from?: A friend of mine has met the mastermind and the man behind the operations. Apparently, the stones this restaurant uses comes from a "special place" in the world, and it's a "special" type of stone. Special eh?
And then I guess the guy decided, "Why not cook stuff on the slab of stone instead of using a stove top?"
Having obtained a 2 for 1 entertainment coupon for Stonegrill, I brought a guy friend with me, and we traveled into Yaletown's Stonegrill with empty stomachs, hopes, and curious minds.
The ambiance in the restaurant was really nice, with a nice view that overlooked the waterfront. Service was alright, but one look at the menu is enough to make me stand up and leave. Items on the menu were priced $30 and above
When the food came, the server gave a briefing on how to cook the raw meat on the stone. The meat is as is (not marinated nor seasoned), but some sauces were provided for your to either dip your cooked meat in or to cook your meat with. No oil is given for cooking either; you are pretty much left with cooking your meat based on pure heat (like you would with a hot frying pan, except without the danger of burning and damaging your frying pan).
We had no trouble cooking the meat/fish to our liking, but the tiny side of vegetables that we were given with our meal was simply disappointing. Taste of the food? The salmon would have definitely tasted better if it were fresh (as oppose to pre-frozen). All in all, food was bland.
The bill came....along with a 15% service charge. I sure was glad I had my 2 for 1 coupon. Pricey food (that I had to cook for myself), pricey service. And besides, what service am I paying for other than the servers? Are there any cooks in the kitchen at all?
Conclusion:
Other than revisiting our prehistoric, homo sapien-like roots (raw meat on a slab of overheated stone), the food is nothing better than eating roadkill off the paved highway on a hot summer's day.
PROS:
-Healthy approach to eating (no oil)
-Good ambiance, good view of the waterfront
CONS:
-Ridiculously priced food
-Food tastes bland
-15% service charge -

They say: Great steak you cook yourself on a classy piece of volcano rock.
I say: Overpriced & Underserved
Event: Went there for a friend's birthday dinner and had medium to high expectations.
Service: Unfair. For a table of 8, charged us the big party tax and also hit us with a $5/person fee to cut and serve a g-damn cake. Maybe it's because I'm a service snob and also Chinese (I know you're picturing a karate-kid right now) and table service for bottles and cakes are usually free. Nonetheless, it only added to my annoyances with the restaurants (don't worry, next paragraph will get there).
Food: As I eat up the city little by little, I realize that good steak is hard to find these days. Given that Stonegrill gives you a "AAA quality" type of steak that you cook yourself on a nice piece of volcano rock, service should be quick right? Heat up the rock and slap on a piece of raw meat. Well behold, after my so-so spinach salad, we waited 45 minutes for raw meat on a piece of rock. Puh-leeze. -

Probably one of the most overpriced and extremely ridiculous dining experiences I've ever had.
You essentially cook whatever you order upon your own little hot stone. That's it. No marinades no oil necessary. It's just meat and vegetables and whatever else you may have ordered.
I'm sure this is healthy as advertised, but really? Does it need to be priced like this?
Overhyped. -

I like fondue. Does that make me a sucker? My husband thinks so. You often pay extra for the privilege of cooking your own food. Well, Stonegrill is the same kind of deal. Instead of a pot of cheese, oil, or chocolate, you get a rock, er, I mean a stone.
Our server was really nice and gave us detailed information about the meals we inquired about. We both ended up with steaks. We were both left unimpressed. We could have done better at home, with the privilege of cooking in our own home.
It seems like a nice idea. The view from the restaurant is nice. But overall, it's not what it should be. -

We went here while on our honeymoon. We saw a coupon for it on the back of IMAX ticket and thought why not.
This was a completely new dining experience. We were seated in the corner by the window and had a great view of the harbor and the service was excellent.
We ordered the Alberta Super Prime and it was the best steak I've ever tasted. My husband said he enjoyed it over Ruth Chris and Mortons. It was cool that no matter what you did with you steak it didn't ever burn or loose flavor. I hardly ever eat steak without some sort of sauce and the natural flavor of this steak was so good that I didn't use the sauce provided.
If you check out the website you will see how it works. I can't wait to go back. -

so love the differnt aspect and the two times i were here i found the food to be great. i personally dont like my food drenched in stuff so i cant taste the natural flavor. i can understand peoples concerns with having to 'work for your food' with cooking to your standing. but it is a neat touch. it is pricey and i wouldnt go there with out a coupon. but def nice views and staff always nice. will go back- with a coupon that is :) but no complaints!

Very very bad!!! So we live nearby but avoided stone grill because we had heard poor reviews. Well tonight we were looking for place to have dessert and it was the only place nearby serving what we wanted after reading their dessert menu posted outside. When we went iindoors we noticed it was very quiet with many empty tables so we expected to get in easy. When we told the hostess we were having desert only she stopped showing us to table and said for us to try the place next-door nu. So we told her we would not be back. What empty restaurant on quiet night turns away a potential new customer for business. A customer who could hVe given them a chance to turn around a very bad rep. I would never ever eat at this place!!!!!

Just celebrated my 3rd anniversary at the Stone Grill and it was fabulous!
This is a place for people who like food, know how it should be prepared, and know how it should taste. YES, you are in control of how your food cooks, so if you have no concept of how long a protein should be cooked, this place is not for you.
Your raw meat, fish, or shellfish is brought to you on a volcanic stone that has been heated through for 24 hours. The stone stays hot for 30 - 60 minutes. The best thing to do if you want a leisurely meal is to remove your protein from the hot stone to the side dish provided then cut off small portions and cook those portions to taste along with the veggies provided. What my husband and i both liked was the fact that we enjoyed hot food cooked the way we liked it throughout the whole meal. I happen to like my steak medium rare but often have to eat "cold" steak or over-cooked steak in other restaurants. This way, I could have hot, medium rare steak every bite. I've heard other reviewers claim that this place is over-priced for a cook-it-yourself restaurant but considering that all the ingredients are of the highest quality, the wait-staff knowledgeable, friendly and helpful, and the view extraordinary, we did not find the bill outrageous.
If you enjoy fresh, healthy food the way it is suppose to taste, check out the Stone Grill in False Creek. And if you do want your proteins marinated first, you do have that option. All you need to do is ask.
Thanks to the all of the staff at the Stone Grill for making our evening such an enjoyable one. -

this place has its ups and downs - I asked for a window seat, and they didn't give us one (they said they'll try)... i would understand if they were busy, but............ the place was empty. There were maybe 2 other tables there. So i couldnt really understnad why they seated us where we didn't want to be seated. the food was ok, i mean it was good, but not really worth the price we paid. The steak my boyfriend had was absolutely delicious. my seafood trio wasn't that spectacular... The wine the server suggested was gross, but he was nice and very friendly. The view was stunning.. but again, we werent seated near a window so we couldnt really enjoy it. overall i had fun - it was an interesting dining experience... but was it worth the price we paid? (60 bucks each person) probably not... might return for a special occasion.
