I recently stayed at the Stollery for one week with my 6 month old son. While the Emerg and triage experience left something to be desired, the medical staff, in the Stollery once we were admitted, we're phenomenal!
We were treated with kindness and compassion at every turn. I was impressed with the patience and dedication I observed everyday from all the team members. I appreciated how family focused they were as well.
The unit we were on had a play area out front for visiting children and a family area in the unit with a television and a computer. They also had a toy room filled from floor to ceiling with various tots for every age category from infant to early childhood! It was very comforting to find many of the identical toys we have at home but had not thought to bring with us. I will definitely be donating many of my children's outgrown tots that can be easily cleaned to the Stollery!
Wi-Fi is free while at the Stollery. Simply go to the family room on the 4th floor to sign up for it. The family room also has games, couches, etc. - just a place to get away.
We also visited "the Beach" where they had hundreds of tots ranging from an air hockey table to dress up clothes to arts and crafts do that kids can be kids while staying at the Stollery. They even had a section for babies to do tummy time!
We will be returning in a little over a week for some follow up testing and I look forward to knowing that we are going to a place that is family focused should we need to stay awhile again. They do their very best to take the scary out of a hospital stay and to make it feel a little more like home. -

We are so fortunate to have such an amazing facility here in Edmonton. The Stollery is an amazing place. Hope lives here for kids who've been diagnosed with serious illnesses. I've met some of the children undergoing treatment here, and while their parents are afraid, it's obvious they feel that they're in the best hands possible.
The Stollery isn't just a hospital. It's a place where kids can still be kids, despite the life-altering experience they're going through. There's an infamous place at Stollery called The Beach, where kids can be kids and play with each other or their pets from home. Child survivors have later talked about this place fondly, as a second-home that was fun filled with wonderful doctors and nurses who took personal interest in them. I heard a radio interview with one woman who, sadly, lost her son, but still goes back to walk the halls of the Stollery because she feels at home there and everyone knows her.
I volunteered answering phones at the Stollery annual fundraiser and got to hear how charitable donations make such a difference in the quality of care available for patients. This is an amazing organization if you're looking to volunteer or financially support the important work being done to change and save lives.
