Walking past Stogie Joe's on a Friday evening I couldn't hep but notice how great the pizza people were eating on the sidewalk looked and smelled. I was surprised as I wasn't expecting an establishment called "Stogie Joe's" to have awesome pizza.

Less than an hour later a wonderful person offered me a slice that I noticed smelled just as delicious. The aroma didn't lie: it was a great slice with sauce on top of cheese. I'm noticing more and more that the best pizza has that order.

Stogie Joe's: well worth it for the pizza of all things!

Very disappointed. We ordered here because we live nearby and have experienced good things in the past. I have experienced bad things this time around. I called in an order for linguine with crab gravy, with some extra bread or rolls, and an order of chicken parmigiana, with a side of linguine, with an extra side of sautéed spinach. Some problems:
    1.  The serving size of the linguine with crab gravy was basically a child sized portion.
    2. The sautéed spinach looked, tasted, an smelled suspiciously like satueed broccoli rabe.
    3. The bread was not present.
    4. It cost $33, and my husband had to reheat is leftover hot wings after consuming his child sized side dish of an entree.

So amazing food, just horrible execution and over priced.

I had a need to be in the area yesterday and Stogie Joe's was on my list of bars to crawl. Am I glad I did.  Although I'm from the burbs I much prefer a classic South Philly bar to the sanitized joints often found on the mainline.

So I'm sitting at the bar taking in the atmosphere, sipping a drink and listing to Zeppelin on the juke box.  The guy next to me orders the quickly becoming legendary Stogie Joe Stromboli.  I've listened to many people rave about this baby so I was pleased that I would see one.  When it arrived it smelled and looked wonderful. When I said as much to my neighbor he quickly obtained another plate and sawed me off a chunk.  It tasted as good as it smelled.  Stromboli's can be deceptively tricky to make well.  If you get the proportions wrong they turn into a gooey mess.  This one had just the right amount of spicy cheese and excellent Italian meats.  The dough was the perfect thickness.  It was easy to see why it gets all the raves.

So I enjoyed the atmosphere and loved the food.  I've bookmarked this place to visit again.

Came here for a lunch date with a friend today.
The open garage door in the summer was always appealing to me. It wasn't open today though. Today was nice and sunny but still pretty chilly. My friend & I did decide to still eat outside though. When we walked in the place, we did see that they had a nice little fire place.

So we were the only two sitting outside and we don't know if the waiter forgot about us or was a bit busy today but we sat around for a little before we got our menu. He did come back pretty quickly with our water and asked if we wanted to order yet but we we're ready. After that, it was a while and nobody came back out so my friend went inside to order.

The food did not take too long to come out. We ordered the Potato Wedges with some kind of cheese dip to share. The dip tasted like butter.
We also happened to order the same sandwich, Pulled BBQ Pork. It came with two peppers that we pretty hard to cut but nice and spicy. The sandwich itself was also pretty good.

The prices were also pretty decent but I don't know if I would come back.

I wish I lived next door!!!!  But I don't, so I trek or cab to my favorite spot on East Passyunk as much as I can.

Al fresco dining out of the garage in good weather or bad, a nice bar, jukebox, and plenty of TV's make this a good spot for Sunday Funday, watching the game, or dinner and drinks.  Speaking of Sunday's... my favorite is catching a 1pm game and sticking around for the live entertainment later on.

The bartenders are wonderful, Joe always takes good care of us.  The food speaks for itself... baked wings and a square pizza is my usual.  I hear promising talk about the meatballs and stromboli- they are on my list to try.

    FYI... cash only

ok, so i live down the street and this is still one of my go do orders. As much as i love eating there because the beer is cheap and the service is great, i love i more when the food comes straight to my door.

There are two dishes that i dream about. 1.  Chicken parm.  I know that you think that everyone makes this in south Philadelphia.  Oh, you are wrong.  It comes chopped up with pasta and as a side dish.  But real, red gravy, over sized chicken parm is hard to find.  I don't want a sandwich.  I want a big old platter covered in cheese and sauce and deep fried to perfection.  Stogie Joe's delivers. I get the spinach when i want to pretend that i am being healthy.

My other go do dish is 2. Stogie Joe's Stromboli.  I don]t know if you really appreciate a good Stromboli.  Crunchy and salty on the crust with a filling that satisfies.  This Stromboli has spicy cheese and meat and comes with a tangy red sauce that is a fantastic accompaniment.  it is spicy and savory and perfectly melty.  I want to eat it every day.

I have also eaten in house and i would recommend the pizza (plain) and the house salad (comes covered in meat and cheese. mmmmm!!!)

Good stuff for a low neighborhood price.

Stogie Joes is a solid stand by for beer, pizza, and casual grub. Their upside down pizza is a treat. Everything I've ever eaten there has been tasty, fresh, and well prepared.  Service is usually middling to A-ok.

The main room with the bar and video games is very casual if a bit loud at times but good for kids. The side room with the fireplace is quite classy but not as good for immense groups.

On weekeend nights the diversity of the crowd makes you glad you live in a neighborhood. Unlike some other local places filled with one or two flavors of people.

I don't eat here as often as I should partly because their vegetarian options are a lil lacking and many of my pals are veg heads.

Went to Stogie Joe's tonight for a beer. The food smelled awesome! I saw some patrons eating platters with sandwiches, and the platters looked beautiful & delicious.
Haven't tried the food yet, but it smelled out of this world. Stogie Joe's in on my to-do list.

Went back to Stogie Joe's last  week for my birthday. GF and I ordered the mozzarella with tomato & basel appetizer. It was absolutely delicious. Slices of mozzarella with slices of tomato and chopped basel lightly drizzled with some type of vinaigrette.  What really stood out was that the tomatoes used were really flavorful. Not those crappy flavorless green tomatoes gassed to make them red. No, these tomatoes had taste. The food we had was good, and the place was nice with friendly staff and nice patrons. Was disappointed they don't make steak stromboli, but you can't have it all.

It's your basic neighborhood bar with decent food. The bathroom could use a little work but its an ok place. Bartenders are always good. You could actually stop in and eat during the day as a small menu restaurant. If your on the Passyunk trail I would check this place out.

I didn't really know what to expect when choosing to eat here.  I really just wanted a place close to me that had outdoor seating and a bar, lol.  I saw some good reviews on Yelp and decided to give it a go. Delicious! I had the BBQ ribs and they were fall~off~the~bone tender. Better than I had in Austin, Texas back in July.  The beer/shot special was just want I was looking for that night, too!

I went with a friend on a Tuesday night.  It had a decent number of patrons but there was still seating available.  Apparently it was karaoke night. The good thing is that they can close the bar area off from the restaurant section.  It was a great experience. Yummy food, good beer selection, delicious cheesecake, AND I got to watch the Phillies game.  I will be back!

Delicious pizza, big space, great crowd, and they love to do outdoor events with a beer tent...AWESOME!!!

I think some of the old school South Philly crowd here keeps the hipsters away, so the crowd is more diverse than you'll find on Passyunk Ave.

They had a nice tent and set up with a band for Beer Week and for the Passyunk Car show. They also have outdoor seating, and semi outdoor seating. (Side note, part of the bar looks like it's a converted garage. Sometimes the door is open, sometimes the door is closed and they'll then light the fire in the fireplace.)

Go for their beer selection, their tomato pie, outdoor seating.

    Some math:

South Philly dive + hip Passyunk corner eatery/ Brooklyn-style pizza pie=

Stogie Joe's awesome pizza, sandwich and beer spot.

From the outside, Stogie Joe's looks very, very hipster-esque. The remake was completed last year with stone facing and facy signage. However, stepping inside, you can see that the South Philly ambiance is perfectly intact. Yes, there are tacky signs on the wall, some sort of cheap plywood tables and a generally dark, grimy feeling.

What Stogie's lacks in atmosphere is makes up for in spades with its pizza.

A rectangular (yes rectangular, not square) pizza. Thin. Cheese on bottom. Pushed up sides. I know what youre thinking- isnt this the South Philly Sicilian? No.... this is THIN. And the sauce itself has a touch of spice. The cheese is remarkable fresh, not chewy like most places.

I suggest the pepperoni. Watch out- it has a little bite.

I probably never would have tried Stogie Joe's on my own. I don't know why. I walked past it plenty of hungry times. It took my brother moving around the corner and giving the pizza a try one night. He called me to let me know that I have been missing things. He told me that I needed to see about this pizza. All we do is talk about food, I tell you. Recipes, restaurants, food conversations constantly... Hmm..if only there were an outlet for these kind of ramblings.

So anyway, as you might expect, I'm not one to turn down a pizza invitation.

That being said, I really can be an unbearable snoot if a pie or a slice is not to my liking. I know I can be a jerk about my thin, crispy crust NY style preferences; these kind of demands.

Stogie Joe's pizza meets none of my usual criteria and yet I like it. I totally like it. Tasty business is that square crust with crunch, topped with cheese, then sauce on top. As the sauce bakes unblanketed, it becomes even more tomatoey-concentrated. It's just good eatin.

This review is based on take out pizzas. I've only ever had a beer brand beer or two at the bar as I waited.  Friendly service! I've never eaten in the restaurant itself, but it looks cozy by the fire in the Winter and it looks breezy along Passyunk in the warmer months. I wouldn't turn down a pizza invitation to Stogie Joes.

In other news, I wouldn't turn down a stromboli invitation to Stogie Joe's either.

I will be going here...a lot. What a great place. Small enough to feel cozy, and large enough to seperate dining from the bar. The menu has a lot of variety, so it was hard for me to narrow down what I wanted. I ended up going with mussels over linguine in a red sauce. It was delicious! Everything about it was great. The mussels were some of the best I have ever eaten, the sauce was just the right amount. My husband ordered a pizza, which is like cicilian, but a red top. It was so big, we had plenty to take home. It was not super thick or bready like most cicilians, it was the perfect conbination of bread, sauce and toppings. The bar is also very extensive and the bartenders were very attentive. I am so happy to have this new place in the neighborhood to frequent!

I did not try the food, so my commentary is only about the bar.  I was surprised to see all the glowing reviews after coming here this weekend.

What's with the cash only policy?

That aside, I felt like we were in the way, no matter where we stood.  Initially we were told we couldn't sit at an open table, then we were told we could sit there but couldn't drag extra chairs over (as we had tried to do).   I thought the tables had waiter service, but I we forfeited that inadvertently when we went to get drinks at the bar after we were told not to sit at the table.  At the bar,  it  took a while to get drinks.  Overall ok but not my favorite.

The Stogie Joe's is not only in the heart of south philly, it has a great menu, wonderful service, and a really cool screened in garage complete with fireplace and overflow seating from the bar room. I am sitting at a high top because the bar is already full at 6pm on a Saturday. Regardless I am served right away. Food and drinks keep coming out quickly every time I placed add-ons. I'm really impressed with how everything comes out just right.

After blazing through a succulent deer stew ala "venison chili" and keystone lager, I need a recommendation because it is my first visit here. My waitress offers her personal favorite: white pizza with sausage and tomato slices. I add sauce, because white is not my first choice. The sauce was very different, it is so wet that it practically overflows onto the pan!

The small was perfect for two people (12"x12") but I finished the whole because it was too delicious to leave any.

    Note: cash only!

While the ambience is full of strange juxtapositions -- a very up-to-date facade and signage followed by a dreary and unadorned interior, if you give this place a chance or two to impress you in terms of it's food and atmosphere, you will likely be back.

If you're looking for the hipster vibe and craft brew beer list, you won't find it here.  I think this is refreshing, as nearly any bar within a certain distance of center city seems to have been overtaken by the craft beer movement, skinny jeans and tattooed bartenders.  In other words, while some would see the vibe lacking at Stogie Joe's, I find it to be unique and true to its roots.

The stromboli here is truly amazing.  Probably the best i've ever had -- and i've had many.  I like to get the pepperoni stromboli with a side of sauteed spinach.  I have yet to try the pizza but it appears to be the favorite, and as other reviews here would attest, pretty damn good.  I would avoid other things on the menu (which is why I only give the four stars) because the sandwiches and dinner plates outside the realm of cheese and dough are between mediocre and average.

Another thing keeping this from five stars is the cash-only policy.  Given the popularity and recent facade renovation, is seems odd.

I've been there several times now, and the place just consistently has bad service.

I ordered the shrimp ceasar for dinner.  It only had 3 pieces of shrimp on it!  My boyfriend ordered a sandwich and he got it about 10 minutes after I got my food.  So that wasn't good.

Another time, they completely forgot to bring my boyfriend's meal for about a half hour after everyone else's food was out.  So as you can imagine, this is not his favorite place.

At least they have a descent beer selection.

I just tried their pulled pork bbq sandwich. It was good. But what I really wanted to try was their pizza.. Unfortunately I didn't come with my friends, and the smallest size they have still too much for me alone. So I have to skip on that.. sadly.

Friendly service and everything.. easy to find free parking spots.. and.. I still need to try their pizza :(

Well.. I'll be back soon just to try on their pizza.

    CASH ONLY!

That being said- have been there twice since our move to South Philly and this place pleases even the pickiest of eaters (otherwise known as my parents).  Pizza is upside down with the cheese on bottom and sauce on top.  Thinner crust, square- just get the large who doesn't love leftovers?!?!

Potato wedges are a incredibly small portion- 4 of them showed up as a side and about 7 for an appetizer. IMO not worth it.  Side House Salad is great- huge, always bring home leftovers of it and the dressing is killer (yes I saved it and put it on my own salad), comes with delicious meats and cheeses.

Roast pork definitely a great purchase and my mom actually go without bread, which was pretty good as well.

They seem to have drink specials everyday but remember bring that cash!

Stogie Joe's is a no frills, order your drink and shad ep' South Philadelphia bar right there on good ol' Passyunk.

Clearly, some of the above 1 star reviewers are expecting Joe's to cater to their uber-pretentious hipster mentalities.  There's plenty of other spots in the neighborhood where you can go to drink double triple IPAs and talk about nintendo themed tatoos.

If you can't recognize the simple culinary delight of a Stogie Joe's pizza, then there is no helping you.  A high life, maybe a shot of old grandad - go perfectly with one of their awesome pizzas.  The beer selection might not be the best, but the pizza is and the service gets the job done.

To be fair to a relatively new place in the neighborhood we have given Stogie Joe's a try three times because, well I guess we really WANT to like it, but it's just not working out so well.
When they first opened there were little mugs of mediocre beers along with meatballs with semi frozen centers that had to be sent back, second time, absolute seating chaos and very non-remarkable sandwiches.

This past weekend we thought, okay, one more time. The reviews were looking better, they have been around longer, and maybe they have finally gotten all the kinks worked out?

    Well, kind of.

They do have nice pint sized glasses for the mediocre beer which is a plus, the waitresses were very nice & well informed re the menu - another plus.
But, in the end, I really resent paying $9.50 for a cheeseburger that is made from a perfectly circular, perfectly flat, frozen beef patty puck with just three puny potato wedges and a soggy pickle spear, when, for 50 cents more, you can get an outrageously delicious, fresh made burger at the Royal Tavern that comes with multiple French fries. (I never counted how many, but it was well over three)

Don't even try to tell me that that $16 pork chop wasn't frozen either, because it was.

I guess we should have had the pizza since all your reviews rave about it, but I'll probably just go to Marra's or Slice instead.

    Sorry Stogie.

To the table of obnoxious, out-of-town d-bags sitting next to us and doing their worst "Yo, Joey!" imitations: Just because you saw The Sopranos once doesn't mean you know dick about South Philly.  We will cut your narrow white ass with a sword if you keep that garbage up.

Having got that off my chest, I can now expound on the wonder that is Stogie Joe's.  Where else is staffed by a mom-and-daughter server team who call you "hon" with zero irony and keep your table of 15 aswim in 15 different beverages?  Where else can you mingle with the many, many different types of folks who live on and around East Passyunk Ave?  Seriously, the patrons are gay, straight, young, old, Italian-American, transplant, local, hipster AND South Philly Willy and Millie. Where else can you lounge in a converted garage that is open to the breezes in fair weather and made snug by a roaring fireplace in foul?

Besides the lively Tuesday-night karaoke scene, Stogie's is stellar for thick-crust, square pizza, mussels in marinara and meatball parm sammies.  My personal go-to is the Stogie Joe stromboli, an epic fatty of thin-rolled dough, salami, prosciutto, provolone and some herbs.  No pesky vegetables here!  The monster is $10 and enough for two people to share.

The whole place is cash only, but when you brandish your ATM receipt to the bartender, you get a FREE BEER!  That's right, a free beer in return for using the cash machine.  Is this South Philly, or... heaven?

I woke up this morning, basking in the hot sun, in the middle of the sidewalk, wondering where all my cocktail bruises came from. Then I remembered how it all started. When my friend agreed to attend a cocktail event with me, we somehow ended up taking complete advantage of the open bar. One drink lead to seven and next thing I know, I'm singing karaoke to a bar packed with gay men.

Turns out, that bar was Stogie Joe's and what I thought would be a low-key night out ended being a famous Tuesday jaunt. Despite how busy the bar was, I literally had no problem getting a drink. Stogie's is the perfect neighborhood spot if you're looking for South Philly Italians. It's definitely not a gay bar, but just gay for last night- like a lot of people I know.

I didn't actually wake up on the sidewalk. Thanks.

Blergh.  I don't even know how to pronounce my description of this place, but I think that I got the spelling correct.

The table service was ridiculously slow. Our appetizers and meals came out at different times and we had 3 different servers. With no idea who to talk to about this issue, I will just air my grievances on Yelp.

If you're in the mood for a cheesy bar experience that tries to be interesting and hip, this is the place for you. Complete with d-bag music and style, Stogie Joes takes crap to the next level with pedestrian food choices they may or may not get to your table before you pass out.

The only plus to the experience was that they brought a pitcher of soda to the one soda drinker at the table... which was clutch since the rest of us had to turn to it because they forgot our second round of beers.

TL;DR - Save yourself some money and frustration - go elsewhere. It would be more satisfying to drink from the bar rag of another decent bar.

Not sure how this place has a rating of four stars. i would NEVER eat here again. Grilled sausage sandwich - burnt. Cibatta roll it served on - burnt. Chicken in the ceasar salad - burnt. Flies were swarming around us as we ate (big ones, green ones). Waitress took forever to come back. Saw we didn't eat any of our food. Didn't offer to fix and we were so over it we didn't even want to complain. Don't eat here.

A typical spot I have been walking by to many times withoutstopping in and giving it a try. Out with a bunch of friends we decided to give Stoie's a try. It's basically a neighborhood bar with awesome food.  We had the pizza which was delicious. I personally had the meatball Sandwich w/ Sharp provolone. What a delight! best meatball sandwich I had in a long while.

Though the beer selection is your typical bar selection is great especially when some of your friends are not into the craft beers.

It's a great laid back neighborhood setting. Being from Philly I was glad to have graced Stogie's. I will be returning on a regular basis.

I go here pretty frequently because I love the food but the service is HORRENDOUS!!!! Just absolutely horrific!

I eat-in and get take-out here and when I do take out I get sideways glares from both staff and regulars. I watch as several employees look at me and walk away and wait 10-15 minutes before I have to approach someone about my order. I will say that they are friendly once I do force someone to acknowledge me.

The last time I did eat-in there, I waited a 1/2 hour before someone brought menus, another 20 minutes before someone brought water and then after waiting another 20 minutes for someone to take our order we just put our order in at the bar.

They get stars for having good pizza but negative points on the service. If the food wasn't so good and so affordable I would never step foot near this place again.

Just got back from a great time at Stogie Joe's.  It was our first time there and we plan on going back very soon.  SJ's has a great atmosphere with a great vibe and a pleasant crowd of people.  From other reviews we read it sounds like it can get pretty crowded so for our first visit we decided on an early Sun afternoon.  We were seated and waited on promptly, our server was very friendly.  There was a guy singing great Sinatra & other Big Band Swing Classics which they apparently do every Sun, and made the visit all that much more enjoyable.  On to the most important part the food.  It was GREAT!  From other reviews we read it sounded like we had to try the pizza and Stromboli on our first visit but after having these items I can't wait to try more that they have to offer.  Our group had the clams casino, sorry I didn't personally try but I heard no complaints from those who ate them.  I had the house salad instead which was generous and had some phenomenal sharp parm on it with a great dressing.  We also shared a portion of the BBQ sweet sausage.  I am usually not a sausage fan but the BBQ sauce killed it for me.  It was a perfect sauce.  I couldn't help dipping my Stromboli in it a few times as well.  The boys shared a pepperoni sausage pizza which they couldn't stop raving about.  According to my husband he could eat it every day (even though I make him homemade pizza every Friday night.... he may be in a little trouble over that comment) so apparently this pizza was amazing.  I chowed down on the Stogie Joe's Stromboli which was out of this world.  It had a perfect blend of Italian meats and cheeses without being overbearing and gross.  A lot of Strombolis are way too packed with cheese making greasy and gooey this was literally the perfect amount of fillings and an amazing combination of flavors.  I would highly recommend checking this place out again and again. I am definitely going to go for something BBQ'ed next time just based on the sauce I had on the appetizer.

Amazing bar food.  The Stogie Joe Stromboli is fucking delicious.  The BBQ sausages are awesome too.  And the roast pork sandwich is...you'll probably think I'm crazy...the best I've ever had.  Honest.

Everything we got here was totally bangin!  Aawesome pizza, great sandwiches, salads, mussels and clams.  Sit in the window and people watch on Passy.  70+ year old waiter was THE MAN.  Try this place out, will not disappoint.

My husband is always trying new places --- he was in the mood for pizza.  He said, let's go to stogie joes.  I rolled my eyes - thinking I can't wait to get to yet another dump!

Well I could not have been more wrong.  The place is so quaint, definitely South Philly style (I love that!) and have the best unique pizza around.

It's becoming a regular place for me and my husband.

Delicious pizza, friendly service, a fun crowd, and great beer selection, all at wonderfully reasonable prices: good stuff! I am glad to have finally gotten here after nearly 5 years in the neighborhood. You know I'll be back.

This place was fine. The food was actually better than I anticipated, and is closer to a 4. We had the caesar salad, ribs, meatball sandwich, & BBQ chicken. The meatballs were the shining star of the meal. The caesar salad was just lettuce with dressing and croutons, but it was good. I got the ribs dry, but I suggest getting the BBQ sauce. It's more like a hot sauce/vinegar taste, not that gross sweet brown sauce junk. Their bartender that night was not especially talented or knowledgable, so I recommend sticking with the beer specials. The table service is so-so.
