I really enjoy Stayner's as a place to go for lunch during the work week. The first time I went it took me a bit by surprise. Since it's been around for awhile and there hasn't been much fuss about it, I was expecting just another average pub. They exceeded my expectations though.
The service was great, the food was even better and I was able to get in and out in my limited 1 hour lunch break. Both times I've gone their soup of the day was different and delicious!Listed in: Workday Lunch Quickies

Can't believe I'd never been here before!
Very pleasant service, and a surprisingly delicious "Portoburger". Recommend it! -

Went to Stayner's last week for a lunch with the hubs and DD. I had the best burger I have ever had at a restaurant. It was called the Hawaiian Burger and came with grilled pineapple on top, along with fresh tomato, lettuce and one nice big onion ring! The combination of the grilled pineapple and beef was just outstanding and gave me incentive to try this combo at home. I had the Cesar salad as a side and this also came with a few cubes of fresh Granny Smith apple which cut the garlic a bit and added a great compliment to this dish.
Hubs had the fish and chips which he loved - batter was crisp and not too thick and fish was nice and flakey. DD had the hot dog kids meal and she ate every bit - nice that hers also included some ice cream at the end which she also enjoyed.
Staff at Stayner's were very polite and pleasant. I have been thinking of this burger ever since I ate it and this place is high on my list to return to SOON! -

The other day I took advantage of a Groupon, and tried out Stayner's. I've been there before for music and drinks, but never for the food. As a long time Halifax resident, I've come to expect little from waterfront (tourist trap) establishments, but Stayner's impressed me with their eclectic menu, and fantastic service. (Note - if you can get Lou as your server, you're in luck - she was very attentive and friendly).
We sampled a few things from the menu:
The turkey meatloaf - The presentation was strange - it looked like peanut butter and jam on a piece of toast - and the meatloaf might have been a bit overdone, but it tasted pretty good.
The tomato and mozzarella salad - This was quite good. It had crispy pita wedges and tabouleh hidden under the tomatoes. The cheese was kind of disappointing. It would be better if they had some fresh mozzarella instead of the shredded kind, but the rest of the salad was very flavorful.
The steak - It comes smothered in a butter sauce, so that's always a good start. The fries were good and the vegetables were unremarkable, but fine.
If I had to pay full price for the meal, I don't know if it would have been the best use of my dining dollars, but the fact that we had a Groupon and got a deal made for a pretty good experience.Listed in: Yelptober

You know what? I don't think I've ever given Stayner's enough credit. After years of considering it just a tourist pub given its location on the waterfront, I never put it in my top destinations to grab a beer and an app to pass the time. After yesterday's visit though, I won't be so quick to write them off.
Between the lunch and dinner menus, there's a ton of food to choose from. A little less for the vegetarians in the group, but the few options available were extremely tasty. I'd go back for the whipped goat's cheese and feta dip topped with fig and date chutney alone. The pesto pizza bread was delicious until this vegetarian realized that some of the tomatoes were actually bacon (sweet, delicious, forbidden bacon), the chili nachos were massive, and the wings looked fancy!
Each dish came out looking lovely and with far more attention to detail than your average pub - just one of many ways that Stayner's has upgraded the grab-a-beer experience within their walls.
Staff are dressed nicely in black and white without a single waitress in a too-short skirt in sight. On top of looking nice, they actually WERE nice. Unlike the hardened career servers, bittered by years of pandering to drunks, these folks seemed to have good fun doing their jobs, joking with tables, offering great food recommendations, and checking in often. When I went in to pay, I hung out around the cash for a few minutes (because I told my server not to rush as she went to deliver a few drinks), and every single person who passed me checked in to make sure I was taken care of.
Nicely done, Stayner's. Consider me a convert! -

Decent seafood at a good price. I wouldn't call this a fancy restaurant but it offers a decent menu and provides a good view of the harbour without breaking the bank.
I had the wings and I felt these were some of the best wings I've ever had, which is saying a lot as I eat wings weekly. My wife had the chicken teriyaki but didn't like it much. The beer selection is quite good with plenty of local fare.
They were child friendly giving our 3 year old crayons and a colouring book to keep her occupied.
All in all a good experience if you're looking for a laid back atmosphere. -

Went to Stayner's last Friday and I was very impressed by just about everything!
Our servers were all great. The best part was that they have a running series where they hand out tickets and if your ticket it called, they get you to go up and spin the wheel to win some fun prizes. A server and the OWNER did this. The owner was really funny and seeing him out in the crowd making people laugh and be excited was awesome.
The food was delicious- as usual. I had the turkey meatloaf which was highly recommended and the whole dish was bursting with flavor. Sounds boring but it was the complete opposite.
When my 2 male friends and I left, another server got our coats and put them on us! Now that's service.
I can't wait to go back and I highly recommend Stayner's- especially on a Friday night for Happy Hour and Spin the Wheel. -

This is a good place to stop by for brunch and the patio is a good spot to check out the people walking by. The seafood chowder is among the best I have had (chunks of salmon, 2 yummy mussels and the right amount of creaminess and thickness). The mimosas ($4 or $5) were a bit weak but good, however the bloody mary was too spicy and watery. I tried the Captain's Brunch - salmon, potatoes with a hollaindaise sauce, and cucumbers and tomatoes with a vinagrette. The brunch was priced reasonably ($13) and was quite satisfying. My husband tried the pan fried haddock with rice and vegetables and he was a fan.

One of my favorite spots to pop in for a beverage and snack while out cruising on my motorcycle. Great patio where you can sit and watch the bikers on a Thursday night (as long as you don't mind the noise of those beautiful Harley's).
Food is presented well, tastes great and is priced decent. I've always had great service from the staff, though it can be a bit slow on the patio in the summer... but hey... why rush it.
Only complaint, and it's probably a mute point because of the nature of the Pub, but when there is a live band the sound is so deafening I can't really stand to be in there without ear plugs. Don't get me wrong, the entertainment is top notch, great jazz and blues, just a little (ok a lot) loud. -

My two friends and I went there for supper on Friday night.
It's on the waterfront ... it must be an awesome patio to be on in the summer.
I had wings and fries ... they were good. My friends had fish and chips and enjoyed them.
Our server was Lou and she was great ... very friendly and helpfu!
There was live music by Scott Swift ... he was was good and was fabulous on the guitar. -

We ended up here after walking out of Salty's down the street (because of their over-priced kids menu - $10 for a P&B sandwich??). I had the fish and chips and it was prepared in the more traditional manner. It was very good and I'd certainly go back. Oh, and the kids menu was great - $6 and ended with a huge bowel of ice cream.

This review is based on takeout only.
After lots of walking through the city, we made a pitstop at the Stayner's Wharf outside takeout window since we didn't feel like waiting around to be seated at a regular table. The bar area inside and the adjacent outdoor patio were filled up with many folks having a good time over drinks and traditional pub fare. The dine-in menu offers appetizers, sandwiches, salads, soups, comfort foods, pasta, steak, chicken, seafood, and local dishes. Weekday daily specials are offered. European and local draft beers are offered. The prices are moderate in this busy touristy area. Live entertainment is offered at night.
However, the takeout window menu is very simple offering 1 pc fish & chips, home cut fries, hot dogs, sausage sandwiches, and cold drinks (pop, water, ice tea).
We each had a Sausage Sandwich ($4 each) which was like a really big juicy grilled hot dog, shared an order of Fries ($4) and some bottled waters ($2 each). HST was included in the takeout prices, pricey. The food was ready in about 8 minutes, good enough to tide us over for our long walk back to the car. -

We ate at Stayner's Wharf tonight. This was the third time for me and the first time for my wife and daughter.
I love the atmosphere at Stayner's. I find it very relaxing and comfortable. I enjoy looking at the old pictures they have on the walls of Halifax in the old days because I am a bit of a Halifax history nerd. Of course I also love that its located right on the waterfront near Historic Properties because before and after your meal you can go for a nice stroll.
I had been telling my wife for ages about the grilled haddock here. In my opinion its the best in Halifax. When she ordered it, our excellent server Jason commented that it was the 'best in the city'! It has a light lemon butter sauce and is served with fresh vegetables and a very flavorful rice pilaf. The haddock was exceptionally fresh and delicious. It is not covered in a greasy cornmeal batter like other places, its lightly grilled. She agreed that it was the best in Halifax. Actually the best anywhere. She said that she felt good after eating it because it seemed so light and healthy. Though we know better ;)
I had the citrus seafood Florentine. I always make a point of counting the seafood portions in meals because I'm cheap like that.( I mean frugal) This meal did not disappoint. This fantastic looking dish included about 3 fresh and huge Digby scallops, 3 or 4 shrimp, 5 mussels and a huge piece of lightly grilled haddock. It was smothered in a wonderful sauce that had a whole lot of flavor. I was tasting leeks, lemon, a touch of wine, spinach, a bit of garlic and a light creamy base. It too was served with rice pilaf and veg. It was amazing.
Our 7 year old had the pasta and tomato sauce with 2 slices of toasted garlic bread. The sauce had a nice garlicky tang and a lot of herbs which I like. The portion sizes on all of the dishes was huge. Our daughter finished it all so that speaks volumes about the dish in itself.
Jason, our server, went overboard on the accompanying desert that goes with all kids meals. He brought out a large bowl of ice cream with raspberry and chocolate toppings and 3 spoons for us all to share. That was a really nice way to end our excellent meal. Jason was funny and provided some comedic entertainment for our daughter and us too. He is an excellent server. A real pro! Very knowledgeable about the menu, efficient and very friendly.
You know, its places like this that make me so glad to live in Nova Scotia. I think we have the best food in the world - seafood for sure, beautiful surroundings and awesome people. And that pretty much sums up Stayner's Wharf. We can't wait to go back! -

Good food, good location, good view, good service. I have mostly good things to say about Stayner's Wharf, where I enjoyed pasta with seafood and drank a local wine.
My visit coincided with the Halifax Jazz Festival, and while I was glad to see that so many venues participated, including Stayner's, unfortunately the act that played while we were there was bad. Smooth jazz covers of Beatles songs, and only that. Still, not Stayner's Wharf's fault, nor something I'd hold against them. -

Classic meats and well seasoned dishes with a waterfront location. Its stellar patio space and great view make Stayner's a nice place to grab a beer and grub in summer months.
This place is much loved by Halifax locals, and has been around for a significant amount of time. While the menu isn't for me, its all prepared with quality and expertise. I will take my Dad here next time he visits... he loves a good steak.
Excellent Halifax venue with a hearty palate. There is a friendly, relaxed atmosphere that both locals and city newcomers can enjoy! -

We went here the other week to try the fish and chips. After a long day of shopping we decided on here. It might have been because I could not walk any longer and the chair was calling my name.
The fish and chips were good, light batter, crispy and the cold beverage hit the spot. I am going to get the clams next time on the recommendation of Bethany. -

Like clams? Like beer? Like eating clams while drinking beer? Then you need to head to Stayner's Wharf, where the clams are fresh, the beer is cold and the atmosphere sucks you in and makes you stay overtime.
Stayner's is a fixture. Downtown near the ferry terminal, it's perfectly poised to nab you, either on your commute home from a long workday or as a harbourside beacon drawing you to the waterfront.
Stayner's does many things excellently (try the Molten Chocolate Deluxe!) but best of all, they provide a venue for live jazz twice a week - Wednesdays and Sundays. There's nothing quite like sitting back at Stayner's with a cold beer or a glass of wine and passing the time enjoying good food and listening to live music.
Stayner's also has a patio for the warmer months. If you like people-watching, the patio at Stayner's is the place for you! With the ferry terminal so handy, you get to experience a cross-section of Halifax life, all passing in front of you while you munch on any of the fine offerings on their menu.
Try Stayner's. Tell them the clams sent you. -

Stayner's used to be one of my favourite restaurants in town - their steaks, drenched in butter, were to die for. But somewhere along the way, the prices went up, the size of the steaks went way down, and the flavours and special touches were lost.
Perhaps it's not their fault. The restaurant is smack-dab in the middle of the most touristy (touristiest?) part of Halifax, and they really pack 'em in, especially on the outdoor patio, during the summer months. Tourists (sorry) aren't generally known for being the most discerning diners, so maybe the restaurant has just stooped to catering to its lowest common denominator. Whatever the reason, my most recent visit may have been my last.
Still, there are other reasons to go: live jazz. Good people-watching. Cold beer, and a good selection of beers, too. Just don't order the sad little steak. -

This was an early lunch on a Wednesday. I had the bowl of chowder which was excellent 8.5 out of 10. The small ceasar salad was also very good. Service and timing was of the usual high Halifax standard. Only negative thing was that I shared my meal with a hornet but what did I expect when you dine el fresco... recommended.

Ordered the fried haddock. The fish had an extremely thin breading which was excellent. The fillet was cooked perfectly as well. The veggies and rice were about average.
