Love this place, especially since it's walking distance from my place. Burgers are great, always hits the spot, and um um good sweet potato fries!!
Still trying to figure out why their printed ads still state open "everyday," when they are closed on Mondays. Everyday to me, is "every" day. I occassionally go by on a Monday, hoping they are open, they are not. :-( Darn, I really wanted a burger that day too! -

Station is a cool spot. It has a fairly large outdoor area complete with play equipment for children and lounging space for dogs. I like the family style set-up of picnic tables; very casual atmosphere and simple menu. The indoor seating is limited, but it has a decent size bar.
I've had the spicy black bean burger & the grilled cheese. I'm not a burger fanatic and think that they all taste virtually the same, but the black bean option was a tasty variation. The best part? You can order half or full size orders of various types of fries and tots. There were 3 of us the other night and we split a half order of both tots & garlic fries and it was PLENTY. Give this place a try if you're in the neighborhood; they have a great selection of beers on tap too! -

Great food, the kids had a ton of fun, and our waiter was a doll. Really couldn't ask for much more! The spicy black bean burger and garlic fries were delish.
Loud, chaotic, and fun...perfect for our crew and the 10+ other families that seemed to be enjoying themselves as well. Will definitely go back! -

Amazeballs! Spicy Black Bean Burger and Tots! Mmmmm, go there all the time, they're really fast. I usually get to go. Got the Garlic Tots and have gotten the Turkey Burger and Sweet Potato Fries too, everything's always amazing.

Love this place. But one of the heat lamps outside has been broken forever. And tonight was cold. All the servers kept coming over to try and fix it, but it is broken. Each server tried for several minutes to get it to light. It is kind of sad to see the servers wasting their time trying to get this thing to light (while they could be bringing us beer!), when it is never going to light, since it is totally broken. Why not get it repaired, or get a new one? The servers are trying so hard to get it to light because they care about keeping us (the customers) warm ... they are nice. But it is broken! Other than that, great place.

Review from Chris B.
"Do you see our kids?"
"Oh, there they are. Olivia is dangerously swinging on the gate and Marlowe is dumping gravel in her hair. I'm going to order another beer."
If you don't have kids it would seem like 90% of the people here are sh*tty parents. But you know what, going out to eat with kids sucks. Here is my take on eating at places with kids.
Make it quick- You can't go to a long sit down dinner . This place has a small menu, a couple items for kids (they are going to be too busy playing to barely eat anyways) and open seating. There are no reservations so I think people feel bad for camping when others just want a table.
Go some place that's loud- This place is loud. But the good type of loud where people are talking and the kids are having fun being kids with other people's kids. Ya dig?
Keep it casual- Little kids like to mess with everything on the table and knock over waters that soaks the table cloth. Here you sit at picnic style tables outside. The perfect San Diego style of casual dining. The dogs like it too.
The food is pretty good too. Best tator tots I've had, and the turkey burger was not dry, seasoned well, and served with a buttered bun that held everything together just fine. The kids like it and I like it. High five! -

Just what San Diego needs: another hipster burger joint. Plus one point from the playground. Minus one for the trendy mustaches
Food was okay-nothing to write home about but it did the trick. Service wasn't bad either. On the plus side, i do like the open feel of the place. Bloody Mary's are hit or miss, depending on how drunk the bartender is. -

First impressions: great music, nice draft selection, cool patio, play area for the kid, and good overall atmosphere.
The burger was good, not great but good. I feel like I didn't order it right because upon further examination of the menu I noticed you have pay more for special sauce.
The beer selection was also pretty good, and I always like a place that serves tater tots!
This is definitely a place that I have to try again, maybe for dinner and drinks, cause for lunch it was just ok. -
Review from Andy D.
Another place I've had bookmarked and ready to go to for a while. but kept putting it off. The reason I kept putting it off is because it's a really long, meandering drive from where I work, even though it's really not that far. Usually, I'll go on my work lunches somewhere in National City, downtown, or North Park, because the places are all conveniently located close to a freeway. This place doesn't have a good direct rout from my work.
I made up my mind yesterday that I was finally coming here. It was pretty nice day out, and this place is set up for good weather. It's a really cool place. The inside of it has a lot of large open windows and doors, and the outside is even larger, with plenty of tables and seating.
I ordered the cheeseburger with cheddar cheese and bacon, and some garlic fries. I ordered the small fries, but regretted not getting the large ones as soon as they arrived. The fries were awesome. I still have the great taste of garlic in my mouth 3 hours later, even after eating some cake and cookies. The burger was almost just as good, but what can top some awesome garlic fries. -

Would have gotten 5 stars for the tots alone but my veggie burger fell apart the second I picked it up and it was hard to enjoy my meal. I was that weirdo messy girl eating a burger with a knife and fork wasting a ton of napkins. Anyway I had lunch here with my bf a few weeks ago and I loved it aside from the veggie patty falling apart and the bun being soaked in some kind of sauce. I reeeeally loved the tater tots with that seasoning they used, I do regret ordering the sides of sauces because although tasty they just seemed like mayo with flavorings added all I needed was ketchup and mustard. I also had a drink with my meal, I forget the name but it had vodka and citrus and I loved it, not too sweet or too tart. My boyfriend had some burger which he loved and i stole his pickles then asked for more because they were amazing and seemed homemade.

Was wanting to check the place out for a while and finally did about a month ago. I loved my burger and fries. Really super tasty....perfectly done.....great seasoning....no complaints. Outside patio was cool because we could have our dog with us and that was really fun. It's nice to take our boy with us so he's not all lonely at home by himself. Noticed they had a separate area for the kids to play and burn off energy without being under foot where the adults are trying to eat and chat and that's really nice.
The only downside I would say is the staff. The bartender was kind of rude to my husband, not very welcoming. And since it was early in the day, dude how fatigued can you be? The wait staff wasn't particularly warm either. Everyone seemed like they were just phoning it in. No one seemed to care about customer satisfaction and service. And yes I'm in a service industry too....and since the customer is my bread and butter I treat them like gold regardless of how I might feel at the time.
So good food, nice patio, bring your dog...but don't expect much in the way of customer service. -

I'm not sure I understand the appeal of this place. I've been a few times, and every time it's been cram packed with people. Everything is fine at Station, but not extraordinary. They have some good craft beers, but the selection is marginal. Burgers are good and the tots are exceptional, but other than that, I'm guessing I'm missing something. It's a good place if you have kids, since there's an outside play area, but I'm bummed that I wasn't enthralled with this place. Every time I've passed it, it seems like it's packed to the gills, so I assumed it would be magnificent. I wouldn't avoid it, but it's not the first place in South Park I would go.

Gave this place a second chance after a bad experience initially. Thank you for listening to your customers.
We avoided all contact from our previous server and Nigel was really attentive and helpful in making sure that our dinning area was cleaned before having us seated.
Ordered the same thing from our last visit, but this time the service was way better.1 Previous Review: Show all »

You can pretty much bet that when you follow your nose to a lunch destination, you have struck gold. What was this intoxicating elixir wafting down 30th and Fern? It was all things spicy, charred and meaty. The burgers were delicious! The beer selection is decent, I recommend the pilsner. I love the neighborhood and I would have given 5 stars if the bill had been a little cheaper. I really kills me to pay nearly $40 for two burgers and beers, yet inexplicably I will be back.

I've been here three times in the past couple of months, and to be completely honest I'm not THAT impressed. Don't get me wrong, I like a good burger and a nice cold beer, but I wasn't blown away.
I don't remember which burgers I've ordered( i guess that's not a good sign) and the garlic fries were too greasy.
I like that they have a huge patio, even bigger then the actual restaurant inside. The beer is good and so is the atmosphere.
I really want to like this place, I'll definitely come back and give it another shot, but as for now it's just A-OK -

Plain & simple: this place stannnk! and it wasn't because they allow dogs here, in fact that's about the coolest thing they have going for them.
About 25 or so of my coworkers came here tonight for a going away dinner and we all left in disappointment.
I'm not sure if all my friends were dissatisfied by the food, but i was. I had the yardbird (chicken breast in bbq sauce)--both the meat & the bread was dry. I ate the chicken & tossed the bread. I also had a chance to try the parmesean garlic fries and those, i have to admit, were pretty tasty. Although the food wasn't the best, it wasn't the reason we were upset. It was because of the AWFUL service we received. Yes, i know it is hard to handle a party this big but that is no excuse to throw us an attitude all night long and roll your eyes whenever we ask for something. As a matter of fact, he got many of our orders wrong and instead of nicely correcting his mistake, he shot the worst attitude at my table. Never once did he offer us water or asked if we needed anything. What kind of customer service is that? At first I was very empathetic for him because i know his job can be stressful but after the bajillionth eye roll, I really wished we were assigned to a different server.
If that wasn't bad enough, when we got our bill, many of us felt like he overcharged us. Each and every one of us had to pay extra on top of what we actually ordered. Because our bill was so long, it was too hard to break it down to each and every person. There was pretty much nothing we could do so we just simply added more money. )= This is probably THEE worst customer service I have ever received. If it wasn't, we all probably would be less mad about putting down the cash, but unfortunately it was.
I love the neighborhood and i LOVEE the fact i can bring my dog here, but to come back, i'd have to make sure i stay away from tonight's waiter.
homeboy is lucky i'm no snitch and didn't name drop.... cuz he really did suck!! Each and every single one in party can verify. -

PATIO!
They have a Patio!
The beer selection is somewhat limited and the service tends to be spotty when they're busy but who cares! Bring your dog, order some sweet potato fries and get your drink on in the sun.*

We appreciated the Gift Certificate to the station after our last experience. We went here on Saturday and had great service and great food. The trainwreck tots are my favorite indulgence food - Tots covered in melty cheese and sloppy joe mix. Add a little bit of ranch and a Kriek black cherry lambic and you you have my favorite weekend meal. Yum.

I love bar here and the outside area (too many loud kids sometimes ;(...Matt the bartender is on it ALL the time and is so nice. Me and my boyfriend come here quite a bit now....I had a chicken burger and Jack had a turkey burger...and we shared tots! YUMMMMM...tots are awesome! No better place to get tots and beer!!

I love this place because it is the only place where I can actually eat food and drink beer in peace because they have a little playground that babysits my kids. You still have to keep an eye on them but you can slam beers and stuff down good hamburgers and fries without tending to children at the same time. Wonderful. Great beer selection as well. Indoor and outdoor seating. I love this place. 5 stars!

San Diego, CA
Food isn't that great. Best thing is their tots! sadly. Burgers are bland and dry. Beer selection slim and pricey. No Happy Hour?! weak. I like the outdoor seating on a nice sunny day to people watch with a buddy over a beer and meet some new people on the shared seating style tables. Beware of the kid & dog hours though, unless you're one of those people. When the ratio of kids & dogs outweighs the adults trying to get a buzz, it's time to scram! With so many great eateries and bars close by, it's hard to make Station my first pick with barely average food, slim beer choices, and no Happy Hour...oh yeah, and they're closed on Mondays, huh?

Cool "Plaza" or courtyard seating, outside but between the walls. Very open air main seating area is nice. Great food, good beer on tap. Had tater tots for the 3rd time in 3 days after a hiatus of more than 20 years. I forgot how tasty those tots are!
Good friendly and fast service.
Nearby the Stone company store so don't forget to grab a refill on your growler when you head home. -

San Diego, CA
Solid 4 stars. I absolutely love the atmosphere of this place and the food and drinks are well priced. The one thing holding it from 5 star glory is its burgers - funny enough. A few improvements to their burgers and this place would be five stars.
Everything else was great. Really good tater tots, sweet potato fries, dipping sauces, and beer. Definitely plan on becoming a regular at this establishment. -
Review from Barry H.
San Diego, CA
Met friends here for dinner tonight. It's in the North Park/Golden Hill area-casual trendy. The place has a very open design with a huge back patio that must be fun on a hot summer eve. It was a bit chilly tonight and thankfully they had radiant heaters going or it would have been uncomfortable.
The burgers were decent. I've had better but I've had worse. I liked the fact that they let folks bring dogs to the outdoor area and would have brought mine had I known.
The place was packed the whole time we were there. We got there about a quarter to 6 and had to stand around waiting for 20 minutes and wait for a table to open up. Then once we were seated and someone took our order it wasn't too long before they brought our food. The tater tots and garlic fries were a big hit.
I though it was odd when a lady came along in the middle of our dinner about 630 and without saying a word placed a reserved sign on the table in front of us. I thought it even stranger when as we were consuming our last bites of food someone came by at 650 and told us we would have to leave in 10 minutes because another party had reservations. We hadn't even gotten a bill and they were kicking us out. I thought it was pretty inconsiderate on their part. This does not look like the kind of place that takes reservations but if they wanted to reserve the tables they should have put the signs out before we were in the middle of our meal.
Addendum 4/2/2012
Within 24 hrs of the above review and 3-star rating I was messaged by the owner acknowledging my complaint and offering compensation as an apology. I believe the offer to be sincere and the prompt attention warrants a fourth star. I accepted her apology but will decline the compensation as that was never my motivation. The venue is casual nice, the food and service are decent and I'll most likely return when the weather is warmer-with my family and dogs to hang out on the back patio and have another burger. -
Review from Hiyas C.
San Diego, CA
The only negative I could think of is that my husband and I had no known about Station Tavern sooner. This place is the best place to spend a sunny afternoon. We have a 5 year old and a 4 year old which makes eating out very limited.
The Station has great burgers. (My husband even liked the black bean burger and he's a carnivore through and through). They have tater tots, sweet potato fries and garlic fries that were almost illegal. I'm talking about real roasted, melt in your mouth cloves.
They have a decent craft beer selection as well.
The play area is fenced in and small enough to be able to keep an eye on the kiddes. It's perfect for kids around 3-7 years it has a train station theme. -

Good food. The chicken was tasty, I got it with the salad instead of the beef patty. My husband got the garlic fries and they were worth the 2.50!!! I got an iced coffee with some Kahlua and something else omit. It was good. Strong, but good!

Well, this place used to be a very good place to spend some time outside on the patio on a nice afternoon with some good beer and OK food.
Now it is Chuck E Cheese.
What can I say, enough kids running around screaming to make you lose your mind! Parents with kids love it, everyone else, forget it... unless it is after bedtime. -

Everyone here is miserable and the service shows it! Everyone from the icy bartendress, the distracted waiter to the asian food runner who just abandoned the plates wherever they fit on the table, regardless of whose food it was.
Food was ok.
What topped off the night was the bartendress storming up to our table of soccer moms and telling us to "get the F out". The guys at the table next to ours were smoking and she blamed us without bothering to get the facts straight.
We sure did leave, and we took our large party of 12 ( and our $ ) to the the Bluefoot!
We won't be returning to this Misery Station. -

Straight off the top, F%ck this place! Do not go here unless you like being dissed or like rude service by skinny jean wearing neck bearded sucker MC's who think they are god cause they work at a trendy burger joint.
There are so many other worthy burger joints in this town that offer better service and a tastier burger.
I'm not some secret competitor hating on the place or some Jaded ex spewing hate, I'm a paying customer who went there on his birthday and had arguably the worst service I've had in San Diego in my 10 years living here.

San Diego, CA
My first visit at the Station was this past Saturday night and apparently there were TWO private events going on. Which is normally ok, except one party very similarly resembled a 12-year-olds birthday- constant yelling and "cheering" and was down-right obnoxious. So that was an atmosphere kill.....
Now regarding the rest of my visit.....the Station has excellent bar food choices paired with amazing prices. My clan par-took in the $3 grilled cheese dish with a side of fries and it was fun and tasty and inexpensive. Our server was friendly and visited our table with sufficient frequency, and was also helpful in recommending a beverage. I really like their dark and stormy- not too much lime which is great.
I'll have to go to the Station again when there's not a private party yelling like children, I think I will like it more. -
Review from Robert F.
3.5, but I am rounding down for the service. I generally like this place. I love the location and the whole idea of the outdoor patio. It is great for the neighborhood and it stays pretty busy, especially if it's warm outside. But many of the negatives drag this place down from where it could be. I only mention this with the hope for improvements.
The bad first....
Chris Rock says you can get your kid on or your groove on, but you can't get your kid on and groove on at the same time. This place is flooded with kids....and dogs for that matter. And I have even come here because I had kids and dogs in tow, so I understand the convenience. But when other people's kids were feeding my dog fries and piling gravel on his back, I have to take a stand. There are people who let their dogs stand on top of the table. Look, you can let your canine drag his corn hole all over your own house, but do your best to respect the public space. And if you are a parent, you should get a sitter if you aren't gonna watch your kids at all. And service is spotty, once my waiter was AWOL for a half hour, and my glass empty.
The good...
The buns are great. My burger was overcooked, but they have a good burger for the price. The tots and fries are good, and the choices for dipping sauces are plenty(tangy BBQ, lime cilantro, paprika ketchup, etc). They do offer local brews, but they could definitely push the list, as it is mediocre for a burger and beer joint. But the prices are good on these too. The communal tables are a plus for me, as I think Station acts very much a pub of sorts, and really becomes a public place for South Parkians. -

Not a huge fan of the food the sweet potato fries are less then average and the turkey burger was blah. This isn't a place for beer snobs which killed it for me but my friend swears by the cider. I love the outside patio and unlike most of the reviews I think the staff is fab. As for the atmosphere......the usual annoying types lol. Not a place I would ever want to go by choice or where I would bring out of town guests. I would roll with my friends if they wanted to grab a quick drink though.

Seriously, sweet potato tater tots?!? Awesome! Great place. Very casual. You can bring the kids and still hang with friends over a pint or two. The patio is great, just be prepared to wait on a Friday or Saturday night. I had a chicken sandwich. The chicken was tender and juicy and the sauces were packed with flavor. My hubby had a burger. He LOVED how they added a fried egg! My friend is a beer snob and was very satisfied with the selection of beers on tap. Highly recommended. If we lived closer, we would probably go once a week.

Review from Larry G.
San Diego, CA
The outside-inside dichotomy. Great place. In the summer. Especially if you have kids. When you can eat outside. Right now, their heat lamps just don't cut it.
So we had no choice but to eat inside. But inside is a far different scene than outside. Outside was a shangri-la for yuppies in their 30s and 40s with little kids whose first names are last names (Paxton, Jackson, McKenzie, and so on). Whereas inside was somewhat hipsterish with a bit of a bar scene and a dash of date night. These are not niche groups that tolerate screaming children while eating. Suffice it to say, my son's piercing yells and my daughter's screaming commands were not greeted with good cheer. Dirty looks abounded, from the smug scenesters and then from me daring them to scoff one more time. It's probably best we don't come back here until the weather warms up.
As for the burgers, they do have three vegetarian options. In this area, vegetarianism is an accoutrement, like an iPad or hemp shoes or Ray-Bans or last-named kids. I've tried all three vegetarian options, wanted to like them all, but each has its issues. On this visit, I went with the black bean burger. It has a nice spice to it and proves satisfying to see whole small black beans within the patty. But texture-wise, it leaves a mealy film in your mouth. Another problem is that every time I've ordered it, the patty breaks apart multiple times. The bun is puffy and fresh, but perhaps too dense. It supposedly comes with some type of lemony spread; however, the flavor never pushes through, making me compensate with far more ketchup than I would like.
What they do great is tater tots. Made in-house from fresh potatoes, I could pop these until I burst. Golden brown exterior, pillowy center. Tater tots, I love you.
Nevertheless, yes, nevertheless, how can they charge close to ten bucks for a mediocre veggie burger and not include a side of fried potatoes (tots, sweet, or garlic)? That obligatory side becomes an extra $5 tacked on. So let's recap... a veggie burger and fries total $15. $15! The quality and taste are just not there to be charging this amount at your local burger joint. Well, this is South Park, home to disposal income, reminiscent of Kensington's Burger Lounge. Throw a local beer in there, and two rather pedestrian meals brings you close to $50. Kind of a lot.
As for the play area, my kids do love it. And when the weather is better, it is fun seeing so many kids intermingling. You feel as though this is the epicenter of an ideal community. The wooden trolley car shaped play structure is utilitarianly designed yet so perfect as the centerpiece of the gravelly play area. Although I hate dust and chalk, this play area is a breath of fresh air for parents used to taking their kids to parks with play structures made of plastic. It feels natural, like what children in Boulder or Portland would play in. And that bit of organic space within city living is enough to keep us coming back.
Station Burger, we'll see you again after February. -

Great for kids for lunch! What a great burger, caramelized onions on top, cheddar, and a great bun. They also have a great selection of draft beer. Garlic or sweet potato fries were great. They also have water that you serve yourself which is a great idea. We didn't have any problems with service, it was ok.
Great find in South Park, right next to the house. We will be back!
