CLOSED!!!
It pains me to have to write that but it's unfortunately true. Square Fruit was part of my local: They were my grocer where I'd buy my fresh fruit and vegetables every other day, and where I'd pick up a bouquet of fresh cut flowers that brightened up my home every weekend. The little corner grocer and convenience store was run by a dedicated and hard working family for 16 years, and their presence will definitely be missed in the neighbourhood.
Square Fruit had a great selection of fresh fruits and vegetables at reasonable prices that put Price Chopper and nearby Kitchen Table to shame. Compared to other small grocers/convenience stores they had a good selection of baked goods and veggies. I'd see many cooks from nearby restaurants pop in to replenish their supplies. They also had a small garden centre where you could buy plants, herbs and fresh-cut flowers, which rivaled the other convenience store across the street. The big bonus was that they were incredibly friendly people who were appreciated by everyone in the area.
The reason for their departure is explained in the article attached here (http://www.thestar.com...), but the gist of it is has to do with high rental prices. Even next door at Heel Boy (http://www.yelp.ca/biz...) had to move across the street.
There's been efforts in trying to get another fruit stand/grocer in the same building, with a signed petition and sent to Joe Pantalone. But the optimist in me doesn't feel like it's going to happen and I fear that another resto/clothing boutique will open.
Our neighbourhood lost a great family-owned business that served its community well. But we also lost a great fruit stand that seems to be rarity on the West Queen West strip.Listed in: My locals, The Dead Pool

"It's a basic corner convenience market, but its produce section is quite vast, well priced and of great quality." said Connie T.
Well, I'm not sure I'd call it vast (it IS for a convenience store, though), otherwise I couldn't agree more. Puts produce stores in Kensington to shame. When I went to night it was packed with people buying produce. -

If I lived closer to this store, I'd probably be a regular and more inclined to give them five stars.
Yes, it's a basic corner convenience market, but its produce section is quite vast, well priced and of great quality. Hard to find such a combination out there nowadays.
"When I was your age..." Blah, blah, blah.
But above all this, the people working here are so incredibly happy and welcoming whenever I approach the counter. They talk to me, chat it up, and do so without that obligatory fakey-fake customer service manner.
They just make me feel like this city ain't as big, scary, and faceless as it sometimes seems. And if I can get that in a corner store on a major street in Canada's biggest city, heck, I think that's pretty cool.
