When I were a lad, I were lucky to 'ave just one pair of shoes. Me mum made me keep the box, so I could use it to patch up the holes when I wore them through. I wouldn't get a new pair until the next year.

Nowadays, of course, we're all trying to get our kids to do more exercise. Mine are always losing a baseball mitt, wearing through their cleats or ripping their shorts. I can't let them go without - they'd just sit and play on the Wii instead of getting out and about - but I can't just keep buying them new stuff, or they'd never look after it.

Sports Junkies offers the perfect answer. Sure, start the season with a smashing new pair of the latest Nike Air whatevers, but if they lose them, they get someone else's cast-offs.

The best thing I discovered recently was their stock of used baseball mitts - perfectly broken-in and half the price of new ones. Result!

It can be hit and miss for the consignment items. I used to do better when the kids were little and didn't really care what they looked like in their winter garb.
I did manage to find decent snowboard boots for my son last year. This year he needed new pants and a jacket. We got new ones and they were a bit less expensive than some of the boarding stores on 4th Ave.

My dealing is with the Bicycle Shop. My Konda Dew has been serviced there a few times. They suggest that you make appointment for a Tune Up. You Drop off the Bike one day & pick it up the next day. They have very limited space. Bob the Manger is a honest man. He always seems super busy so if you can get him to pay attention, He's a good person to sell you a bicycle. He the only Salesperson in Vancouver in the less than $1000 sales range that measures both your upper and lower body to fit your body to the Bicycle. They have odd range of bikes at the store so if you don't see what you like ask. They may have hidden away in a corner somewhere. They also buy and sell used bicycles and they paid me a fair price for a commuter bike I sold them that was in very good condition.

I don't know what happened to this store and the customer service. I used to come here for everything I needed when it came to sports equipment. I got my skis here, my two bikes, my ski boots, etc., and for two reasons: 1) it is cheap, and 2) I'm not very knowledgeable about sports equipment, so I like how they offer advice and help me pick out the most appropriate stuff for my size and body type. But honestly, the last three times I've been there I've had such a bad experience that I think I'm not going back. I got bad, slow, disinterested service, and one time they were actually outright rude. Also, I'm not super happy with the bike that I got. Based on my previous experience here, I trusted their judgement when they told me the bike was the right size for me, even though it didn't feel quite right, but after biking on it for a while, I'm just basically thinking: well good thing this is Vancouver, so I know it'll get stolen soon, and then I get get a better one somewhere OTHER than Sports Junkies.

That said, some of the people there really are super nice, helpful, and knowledgeable, but I seem to always get the one who got up on the wrong side of the bed that day, and doesn't really care if you're getting the right (in this case) bike for you or not. After leaving their store for the third time with a frowny face on, I don't think I'll be going back.

Sports Junkies is located smack in the middle of where all the other sports stores congregate along Broadway's main drag. The name works two-fold: as a literal reference to the true sports (i.e. those who are truly addicted to sports) and to the junkyard aesthetic going on here.

Yeah, it's kind of a sports minefield here: parts are strewn everywhere, spilling onto the sidewalk (okay, that's not entirely true--bikes are set up sidewalk-sale style), seasonal garments like snowboarding jackets dominate the main floor, the second floor is dedicated to showcasing their numerous bicycles and also functions as a working space for the staff while they do tune-ups and what not.

As a consignor, some of their stock is a bit more than what you would expect but they're still good value considering how much things are when newly bought.

Sports Junkies is located on a stretch of Broadway that has a lot of sporting goods stores. The difference with this store is that they carry a lot of used stuff. It's a good place to go if you or your kids are just getting into a sport. They have a lot of used ice skates for kids. You can also find used shoes on consignment. The prices go down the longer they stay on the shelves. There's some good shoes and some gross shoes, so watch out. If you want to get rid of your used stuff, they accept bike gear, parts, accessories, golf equipment, camping gear, exercise equipment, and much more. Sports Junkies also sells samples so not everything has been previously worn. They do bike, ski, and snowboard repairs and have ski, snowshoe and snowboard rentals and leases too.

I bought a wicked set of wheels from this joint!

It's a black cruiser bike with red wall tires, and it rocks my world....or should I say RIDE my world.  anyways I was out looking for a bike not to long ago and it has always been a dream of mine to own a cruiser ,and on the recommendation of a friend of mine I stopped in here.  I was actually not going to buy a bike that day , but there it was like a vision from the gods... my bike.  They were more than happy to let me take it for a test ride, provided I leave my drivers license behind.  They talked to me about what I needed with things such as features and add on's.  Not once did I feel pressured into the sale, and I like that.  Once I decided to make the purchase they took me upstairs to the tech department and the guy showed me all the in's and outs of my new ride, and gave it a complete overhaul.  He also explained to me that I would have to bring it back in so many hours of riding and he would for free of charge give it a tune up.  It's places like this that make me want to buy..if your good to me then I will be good to you.

Where can you find me and my bike:  gettin some sick faky air off the back alley speed bump! yeee haw!

Sports Junkies is my favourite store in Vancouver. I bought from them: brand new Jamis bike, hiking shoes Asolo for half the price I would have paid for the same quality shoes across the street, ski poles, skate ski boots - used but in great shape (And it is hard to find used skate ski gear in Vancouver, some used hi-end skiing top...The store is superb value if your budget is tight

I remember when this place actually only had junk, but now they have a really good selection of shoes, skateboards, and snowboards and the prices still stayed reasonable?? How did they do that? Anyways, I have consigned with them as well and it couldn't be easier. The chilled out atmosphere helps since some other sports stores are all about chatting up the customer...blah blah blah! Great parts for bikes too!

No matter what you're looking for in the way of sports equipment and apparel, you're likely to find it here.  Much of what they carry at Sports Junkies is used and sold on consignment for prices that range from reasonable to outright ridiculously low.  So, whether your looking for snowboarding gear, a bicycle, a new pair of cleats, or bindings for your skis, this is a great place to check out.  I just bought a pink soccer ball for a mere $6.  Can't wait to hit the pitch with my girlie ball!
