Hailing from the house-boating capital of North America, Sicamous, BC (and visiting every year subsequently, after moving to the hell hole of Alberta), quality BC produce is the way to my heart. Especially being spoiled with quaint as fuck fruit stands everywhere in my hometown, a cherry tree in our backyard, and honey farmers as close family friends.
I now get to visit BC once a year if I am lucky. While I always make sure to stop at FRUIT WORLD in my hometown and stock up on organic white peaches, cherries, plums, and my other favourites, this obviously can't tie me over for the whole year. And while I like the whole concept of local food, I can't recall ever being offered a Calgarian Anjou Pear or Honeycrisp apple. The only things I ever have the chance to buy local that are in season really are potatoes and other root vegetables most of the time.
This is where Souto Farms comes in. It is rare that I go home from this stand without a bounty of concord grapes, two different types of pears, the juiciest apples ever, and whatever else happens to be in season at the time. The staff always seems to be having fun, and the only ever qualm I've ever had are the airheadsss who sometimes don't realize there is a line up at the til and try to cut in front.
NO CUT-SIES PLEASE. OR I'LL MUTTER RUDE THINGS AT YOU UNTIL YOU FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE AND LEAVE. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED.
Remember your canvas bags, produce is heavy.
I will continue to visit this stand whenever I feel like braving the yuppy shopping mall of this new Calgary Farmers Market location.
